I'm no professional and I don't have anything to teach, this is just me, sharing my thoughts and my work. Join me as I'm learning fine woodworking!
The ability to hand saw that plank in half along its length was impressive. Lots of practice I’m guessing.
Why have I missed your channel for so long? So satisfying to see I'm not alone with my passion for hand tools. Such a joy to see you working mostly without power tools. Rock on bud!

Thanks, love your work. In America, wood working is like making good pizza. Once a person know you can make good pizza, they never leave you alone. I've repaired more boxes, then I'll ever make. That's cool, you learn a lot. What to do, and what not to do. I used to make boxes, for my friend's babies when they were born. I made them large enough to have room for person papers, and extra. I would put a brass plate with the child's name in it. I had to do that, because I noticed the parents took the box for themselves. I used to be able to buy these nice locks, that came with two keys. One key I had chained to the box, on the outside. The other key was fixed on the inside. I did this, so the child wouldn't lose the key. By the time they figured out how to take the key off the chain, I assumed they were old enough, not to lose the keys. Never once did a parent seem inpressed with the box. Eitherway, I always stuck the box in the babies room, before I left. I figured the box would always be in the child's life, and they could never remember not owning it. I just remembered as child, having a crappy box, where I kept my junk. I always asked the my friends, "Don't tell the child where the box came from. I want it to me a mystery." I don't think I made more then ten boxes.

Thank You Gillis.....Quite exceptional....(and here I sit, ugh).....I have spent my 48+ working life as a manual tooling machinist (& I have loved it). Take away the electricity and my work stops. Look at you Gillis, long sleeves, cold shop, no electricity, producing wonderful hand made creations! I watch you work. I learn. I re-watch. This is good for me...TM

Thank you for explaining about the groove. When you were glueing up the sides I thought you had forgotten to place the panel. Then, when you were cutting off the lids, I thought maybe that groove was there to leave a clean edge in the inside. Heh. Hadn't thought that you simply had changed your mind. Fun build to watch. Very decent woodwork. Not going to lie when I saw the woodworm damage I was a bit surprised. I am assuming that the wood was treated before turning into the boxes?

Excellent work Gillis... I also love watching your videos for the hand tool expertise. So good. (Could that wood be meranti? I noticed a bit of a two tone effect which I've seen before... plus the grain looks like meranti but I'm pretty new to wood working so I wouldn't trust what I say!). Keep it up!

Thank you very much! Could be some kind of mahogany perhaps, I don't think it has the typical mahogany look but I've never actually worked with it (that I know for sure) so I don't know how much that species varies

You do such great work! It's inspired me to keep working and building my skills in woodworking - especially during coronatider. I'm new to Sweden (2 years), but I am still trying to find where I can buy wood from. Any tips for finding any wood other than oak and pine/spruce?
Thank you! Very happy you got inspired! Finding interesting wood is really difficult for some reason. Most of my stock comes from people throwing away old furniture and stuff like that. I have ordered from Calexico wood a couple of times, they are great people and have tons of species, but quite expensive. I'd love to find someone with a sawmill to buy directly from them.
@@GillisBjork That was my thought as well - find a sawmill :) Nothing close to me in Västerås that I can find, however. Www.ekgrindar.se might be my closest option

You mean what I use at 9:40 and 14:00? That's just a 45 degree block clamped to my (old) regular shooting board :)
For inside the boxes, did you use a Maple? Also it seems like you are using a D8 saw for the resawing, how much material did you lose?
The inside lining is European lime, very nice to work with! D8 is a Disston, right? Mine is not, but similar I guess. It has about 1mm kerf so after planing, maybe I lost 1,5mm or 1/16th inch or so.
Great job! I am amazed by your precision and attention to detail, very inspiring. Could the wood you used for the body be ash? I am only a beginner woodworker and know next to nothing about wood species, but I got a small piece of ash that looks and planes exactly the same.

Thank you very much! It does work very similarly to ash actually, super pleasant to plane, but all ash I've seen has been a very different colour and grain structure. Are you sure it's ash you've got, if it looks like this? :)
@@GillisBjork Good question. The person who kindly gave me the piece said it's ash, but I honestly have no idea. I googled around a bit and some pictures of ash look like what I have (and similar to the wood you used, I think) and are labeled as showing a sort of atypical ash. Anyway, that's just my random guess not backed up by actual knowledge.
I guess the most important thing is that it is nice to work with and looks great :)

How many hours did you put into the 12 boxes?
The reason I ask is not to about how quick but I'm just trying to get my time estimating better. Hopefully to avoid rushing or getting ready for not this Christmas but next. And yes it takes as long as it takes
78 hours according to my notes!
