Having lived abroad for 7 years, my best advice to you is - avoid confrontation at all cost. It's never about showing who can pass. Guns and/or knives are never too far from peope like that whose ego has been hurt. Your life is more precious than holding toe to toe with this guy. He has shown you who he is, believe him. Please have your phone at all times to record him for evidence in case he gets weird.
I would also add to learn cultural differences and be aware of them so you don’t constantly end you in these situations. It becomes frustrating and overwhelming at a point.
Don’t be too nice or accessible, say hello one day and don’t. As Africans we can be very expressive, it’s usually interpreted as aggression coupled with prejudice too. Just keep your head down face your front. Maintain a distance and don’t get too deep in conversation both in work and social situations. You might have been in The right this time, but trust me records are kept with police and if this becomes too frequent it could affect future work opportunities or if you have something major to go to law enforcement about could count as a negative. You might have papers and got hear legally etc but at the end of the day prejudice is alive and well.
You will face people like this in all aspects of life in Canada, at work, when your out, neighbours even when on vacations in different cities. Is it right no, but it would be beneficial to learn other ways to handle these situations as the Nigerian way may be misinterpreted here and detrimental to you in the long run. As the saying goes When in Rome…. Or you’ll find yourself constantly having issues.

Asy- you did well to address these concurrent issues. However I must advise that you thread carefully around that individual, he may truly be sick, or deranged. I live in the US, where simple corrections turn into violence; someone mistakenly knocked on a wrong door got them shot, wrong drive way got them killed. People own guns and conceal dangerous weapons - you never know what’s in his possession. I’m sure you hear similar stories of series of unfortunate events in the neighboring country USA. For your safety, be on alert! Don’t get into confrontation with anyone. I hope there’s a camera in that kitchen- watch your food!

Please be very very careful!!!! Never enter his car because that’s his space and it will be his words against yours. I remember my roommate as well, I had to ignore her because she was crazy acted normal and went worse and I eventually had to leave because it was bad. After I left I heard the police came to sort out an issue with her and another roommate and it was really bad. So please be careful!!!!

In my case, they could even throw away my personal belongings as they wish and the foolish Indian landlady I had was always on their side because she wanted to maintain those crazy tenants for her love for money over my wellbeing. In 2019, two of my friends and I went to Canada to attend a wedding. You will not imagine the racism we experienced - total disrespect etc. Upon my return to the US, I told my husband and friends about our experience, only to find out that this is how visitors are treated in Canada. One even told us (when we were asking for direction at one time), that they do not know why their Government is inviting foreigners to Canada. Very prejudice place!!!

I think the thing is that most international students just prefer to stay away from the police, God forbid the police officer that responded to his call was biased. Also, we're sometimes alone, so our support system might be lacking, especially as new students (I'm guessing he knows that you arrived this year). Just like the example you gave using your son. I have a crazy crazy story too😂😂. I also think that most incoming students might be younger, so it's easier to take advantage of them. Especially if they are coming right out of high school.

Truth be told, you don’t know much about that man you are living with. Meaning you don’t know his medical history as well as psych history. Be careful! In United States, a nurse put a nursing assistant that was always on his case on fire.The nurse killed himself the next day. 80 % of the nursing assistant body got burnt. Dey try calm down dear, don’t make noise in the common areas. When u want to talk, you go inside your room to do so. When in common areas, you focus on doing what you’re doing swiftly and leaving the space for others. You cant go and hang out in kitchen or parlor all day and be having phonecalls. Any shared accommodation you go to, you will meet the same rules.
