  • Just got a 50 lb case of J-Mac Clay in this week. I go through this stuff fast, so I usually bulk order because it actually saves a lot of money. I also recommend getting “soft” clay when ordering a large quantity of oil-based clay. It is much easier to work with and will still retain detail. Here are the links to different clays:

    Alginate for life casting: amzn.to/2IO3vW8

    These links will take you to Amazon where you can see specs or purchase the supplies shown in this video. Anything you order through my links helps me support this TH-cam channel. It does not cost you anything extra, but Amazon does share a small cut with me! Please comment below with any ideas or feedback!

    It is heavy, so shipping discount is great! Mail man gets a good work out too :)

    Hey can you compare j-max and monster clay are they the same type to work with? They seem similar but I can’t get a good answer cause monster is pricey!!

    I have some amazon gift cards so I think I might order the cheapest big block of clay I can get to try it out. It's a bad idea but I want to try out different clays. 😅

    Are you molding in a silicone material to make a permanent mold to cast into wax for casting into metal? Or are casting for some other end material? Perhaps a mold made in mold plaster to cast with slip for something like porcelain? Up until now my sculpts have all been miniatures for jewelry. I also do porcelain jewelry sculpted pieces. But recently Ive had inspiration to make some figurals in bas relief and 12 to 18 inch figures. So im aware of the basic processes and costs plus the differences in the potential retail value of the different pieces. The silicone is more expensive and the metal, of course, but in my experience, people will just pay more for a metal piece. The porcelain however, in the right figure, can just be so colorful and stunning.

      It's definitely worth all the time and investment when casting in metal, but yes I use silicon and plaster to create two layers. I show parts of this process in some of my other videos. I have figured out that cheaper silicon really isn't that much less than the stuff I use. But the higher quality can last 10 - 15 yrs if stored properly. So the rubber doesn't crumble before you finish casting an edition.

    Ok im super new (im usually a paper artist) and i want to buy roma clay. And i know it doesnt harden so how do you make a finish product??

    • @FritzHoppe
      @FritzHoppe  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roma is oil based. Oil based clays cannot be hardend. Try a polymer like sculpey.

      You can put sculpey in the oven and it will permanently harden.

      I create a mold for oil based sculptures. Then the piece is cast.

      @@FritzHoppe so oil based cannot be fired? 😮

    • @FritzHoppe
      @FritzHoppe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@g4nked no it cannot. It is great for practice because you can re-use it indefinitely. I mold my pieces sculpted with oil-based clay. Try a polymer like sculpey if you want to harden it into permanent clay (but it is way harder to sculpt than Roma, especially details).

    That's a LOT of clay! Got something big in the works?

    • @FritzHoppe
      @FritzHoppe  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure do. One really big, and three smaller pieces from 15" - 24". I really will go thru all that in the next few months. I save some clay sculptures too.

    I've been thinking of ordering my Aken clay in bulk...

      If you're familiar with it, and it saves money, then it's a good idea. Having more clay on hand encourages more sculpting in the studio.
