  • In this pottery video we adventure to downtown Minneapolis to pick up 500 pounds of clay. In this video we discuss what kind of clay I use, where I get it, and how I buy it in bulk. I will typcially pay for 2000 lbs. at a time and then pick up in 500 pound increments from Continental Clay.

    I am an old potter just starting up again after retiring from teaching middle school art. I love your videos because you’re funny. Ryder cute but the best part of the video was you hurling clay down the stairs. Years ago, I remember putting a board through a window opening and having my dad shoot clay down to me when I had a basement studio. I eventually remodeled my garage.

    I’ve been binge-watching your videos for a week or so because I grow orchids, and I have a hard time finding pots - I like to use clay pots whenever possible, but orchids need to have a lot of air around their roots - so I’ve been considering making them myself, so that I can make them so that they include all of the specs that I want. Your teaching style is great, and entertaining, so I’m really enjoying the “binge” of your videos! Thank you for doing such a great job!
    Second, and this part is just a dumb bit of anecdotal fluff: I noticed from the first sentence that you spoke that, based on your accent, you HAD TO live in the upper Midwest, because your accent is pretty much EXACTLY the same as mine! I lived in southwestern North Dakota until I was 17 (our accent is a bit more Canadian up there; and something that may help to strengthen my “family accent” is the fact that my grandparents on my Dad’s side still occasionally spoke German in the home to keep secrets from the kids, and later, us grandkids). Anyway, I moved to Chaska when I was 16 (HS graduation), where I lived until I was 20, when I bought a house and moved to Minneapolis. I lived there until I moved to the New Orleans area to finish my degree, back in 2007. During my junior and senior years, I taught freshman chemistry, and without fail in every single section that I taught, one of my students would ask me what country I was from, usually on the first or second day of classes. I guess the [slightly paraphrased] old saying “you can take the cat lady out of the Midwest, but you can’t take the ‘upper Midwestern accent’ out of the cat lady” is true, at least in my case. I also get told to this very day that I sound EXACTLY like Sarah Palin (I do agree with this).
    Thanks again for the great videos!! I can’t wait to get set to try to make some orchid pots!

    It is important to remember that clay can be shipped but it is expensive if shipped far. I like to try different clays but living on the east coast I tend to prefer using Standard Ceramics clays for most of my work lately. But Laguna's B-mix does work wonderfully in wood kilns.

    • @Jonthepotter
      @Jonthepotter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like Continental, who I use for my classroom studio. We do low fire, and the clay body I get works well for that purpose.
    However, once I get my home studio up and running, I don't know if I will use Continental. The specifications, that they orovide, regarding their clay bodies, are a bit incomplete. Standard and Laguna list shrinkage and absorption for all of their bodies, as well as a specific firing range.
    Continental lists none of that, and gives a broad range, like Cone 6 through 10. I've seen many potters discuss it, and the general consensus is, "Clay does not have that broad of a range. Either it will be underfired at the low end, or overfired at the high end.
    Also, Continental doesn't have a mid- range porcelain, like some companies do, and I may head down that road.

    Question:::
    1. How do I refurbish clay?
    2. What kinds of clay is available and the uses for each?
    3. How to dry the clay to leather hard and not over dry it?
    4. How to get it back to leather hard from over drying?
    Uggggg I paid for several classes and they didn't go over any of this!
    5. How do I know I wedged it properly?
    Thank you!

    Question. I am an older person who very much is interested and have been for a long time in learning pottery and how to make it. What do you think is the best approach? I went to art school for painting and don't use it professionally but always loved the idea of pottery. I think I would love it.

    This is soo surprising!!! I have used Continentals Buff Stoneware, first of all it has grog, second it takes FORVER to dry!!! Twice as long as my other clays. I bought it from a local potter so I happen to have 4 boxes which I’m going through but I could never use it had I not bought all of that.

      It depends on the clay and glazes you use. For example if you use a low fire clay you need to use low fire glazes then you would fire to about cone 04 about 1945 degrees F. It is also important to remember than time is a factor in firing as well if you fire for a very long time you don't have to fire quite as high as you would if you fire a bit faster. That is what is good about cones they measure what the glazes are doing.
