I disagree with Jordan Peterson on many things, but his thesis on the origins of religion is something that I feel resonates. Strange thing is, in his mind, he will go on about the purely natural and evolutionary beginnings and utility of religion, its motifs and archetypes, and then proclaim belief in Jesus is therefore justified. It’s like watching a magic show in Vegas, and then your mate tells you in great detail how the illusionist did all the tricks, and then he claims this is why he believes in magic. Bizarre.

If you find his words on religion interesting, then I fail to see what's left of him for you to disagree with.
His other topics being the differences and complementarity between men and women; the necessity of hierarchies; and the corruption of the left : all three sound, valid and sourced.
Would you be so kind as to point to his mistakes ?

@@MasterChakra7 It's all intuitively correct if you have those biases. I find it incredibly offensive and wrong headed in the modern world. I see religion as a perfect example of humanity’s attempt to control its circumstances - personal, environmental etc etc.
We have worshipped everything. It is usually things we have no control over and so, through religion and rituals, we seek to control the uncontrollable be it weather, the sun, oceans, vulcanoes, dangerous animals, diseases, love, fertility, and practically everything else including societal behaviour. The big one of course is the inevitability of death.

@@FendiYT the bible cannot proof god's existence. Its like having a cult member claiming that their cult is absolutely right and people should believe because the cult said they're right.
The bible claims that god exist, and if god exist that proves the bible, its a cycle. This is why believers have a hard time breaking out of their religion. Think for a moment in another way, the bible claims that god exist, what if he does not? Its not like the bible have any more evidences than just claims. If you think this way, its easy to see that the bible is just a compilation of irrational claims that god exist.

Atheists are just people brainwashed by science, brainwashed by the system into thinking everything has a scientific explanation. Samurai culture was similar to Norse in that Buddhism said how you live and die will pass on to your family and tribe. It wasn't until Buddhism reached Japan about 500 AD that this way of thinking was subsumed into the culture and you had honour, Seppuku and Kamikaze all molded from Buddhism which kept warriors fighting beyond what they would usually do and ultimately taking their lives if they didn't act honourably or didn't have the chance to. All very utilitarian - at least at first.

Brilliant analysis of the potential importance and relevance of snakes as a motif in human cultures ... I think a deeper investigation on religious archetypes would be a great addition to the content of this channel. It's like beating a dead horse every time we argue against religious ideas in light of rationalism and empiricism -- I think it's time to distil the baby from the bath water and seek explanations as to why religious dogma and patterns of thinking recur as human universal's.

Okay...don't take this the wrong way, but there are different versions of Samsara. If you're talking Hinduism and Jainism, yes, it IS transmigration, since both believe in a soul, but no, it doesn't mean that you, oh how special, oh how precious, will be incarnated ass a god, while the jerk who cut you off in traffic will be incarnated as a slug. "Karma" means "action", so it all depends on your actions, rather than on how OTHERS judge them. The dude who cut you off could have been driving his in-labour wife to the hospital to give an emergency birth: circumstances are taken into account here. If you're talking the Buddhist version, though, they have a doctrine called "Anatman", or "no self". In other words, there is no YOU to be reincarnated, so it's the aggregates of "your" Karma that are put together into a new body, or bodies. For myself, though, since I'm a Pantheist who doesn't believe in an afterlife, my version of reincarnation is more in line with the version put forth by the philosopher Alan Watts, if you know who he was. He believed that, basically, if you can be born once IT, the process itself, could happen again, but the WHOLE UNIVERSE is you, because it took the machinations of the whole Universe to make the body you have now. And since it happened once, when you die and your body breaks down, all of the literal cells that make you up go into the birth of new things: plants, people, animals...everything comes out of everything else. There doesn't need to be a permanent "you", and there doesn't even need to be Karma coming together into a new body or bodies. Basically, there just has to be nutrients, which, to be fair, there ARE, since plants come out of organic life under the ground, and when our bodies break down, they become the ground. The entire Universe is one big recycling plant, basically. So it's not "Samsara" so much as it is recycling. And this theory is consistent with science, too. You might, you MIGHT, like Watts, though he was cremated as a Mahayana Buddhist, so, technically, he was religious in that sense, but I really do look at him more as a Pantheist. Maybe just because I want to claim a fantastically intelligent individual for my own "team", mind, but there you go.

About the snake thing...that makes me think of the speculated origins of dragons. Wings and claws like those of birds of prey that can surprise monkeys from above; strong 4-legged bodies like lions; and scales and a head like that looks like a snake or a crocodile...and the venom, that can burn like fire. I'm sure the dragon's bones or dino bones also helped a lot.

If it does, it is a metaphysical universe and not a material one. If you impute meaning on emotional experiences you have become a religion of one. While most sects of Christians associate Genesis' serpent with the Devil (something not actually stated), in the vast majority of religions serpents are bringers of wisdom. Some see Genesis' serpent as a wisdom bringer in that the "fruit" is from the tree of the "Knowledge of Good and Evil". This is a loss of a metaphorical "innocence", the beginning of true independence, self-determination, or as I look at it, the loss of a "spiritual" state of awareness for inundation into a "body consciousness" or what Hindus would call maya.
A complex subject for such a short answer.

Teach her what fallacies are, and why it's important to avoid using them. Don't forget to mention fallacy fallacy. Talk about the power of "I don't know". Make sure you have same understanding of the words.
Then teach how to think, by showing common fallacies with multiple non-religious examples. This might take weeks.
Ask if she cares about the truth. If she doesn't, bring that up every time she tries to argue with you, but otherwise don't push your ideas on her.
If everything goes as planned and she cares about accurate understanding of reality, ask what she believes and why. Don't forget to mention, that, if she has to ask others why she should believe, she's of course allowed to do that, but that it also implies she does not seem to have a good reason to believe.
If she says something that sounds wrong, don't say that it's wrong, but rather ask her to explain it. Let her figure out why it might be wrong.
Other than that, be open-minded and willing to change your mind. Ask questions and listen carefully. Repeat her ideas back to her like "If I understand you correctly, you are saying...".

Being only familiar with Christianity , the Christian belief certainly altered as it became legitimised by the Roman Empire and it evolved to absorb Roman rituals into its church e.g. the morphing of the Roman emperor into the leader of the church and giving him theological validity as Christ’s representative on earth. Before this Christianity was a hodge podge of minority cults in the Middle East and the eastern Mediterranean . The Egyptian religion became redundant as Graeco-Roman colonisation and settlement became the dominant socio-political force. Russian Orthodox Church in Russia certainly shrank in the face of soviet socio-political conditions only to now experience a renaissance since it re-identifies with Russian nationalism under Putin’s Russia .

Personally I find this view to be very reductive. Most religions that died out did so due to a range of factors. Frankly the most common is military defeat. This even had a role in the broad conversion of the Norse to Christianity. The Norse didn't convert when they were beating the piss out of the Saxons and Romans, they did it when they started losing battles and their strongest military leaders decided to convert and in doing so gained allies. I doubt strongly that scholars of religion would agree with this interpretation of events.

wanting something to be a fact has no influence whatsoever on that thing being a fact or fiction at the moment.

Wow, that was a hate filled bigoted and vile thing to say. You must be a Christian of the religion of love, do you want to live in a theocracy?
Are you one of these people that think there was a time in the past where life was better and people were happier because they were believers? Christianity had two thousand years of brutal control and if you were to study history you would discover that religion was responsible for mass misery and life today is far far better than at any time in the past. Also look at the happiness levels in countries that have managed to rid themselves of this horrid religion. Scandinavian countries score far higher than all the religious ones on every single metric of crime, happiness and wellbeing. Would you rather live in predominantly Atheist Norway with a murder rate of .5 per 100,000 or very religious El Salvador at 82.84 per 100,000?

As we got more of our basic needs covered, with the agricultural revolution, we ended up with more stable lives, and more time to think of our existence, and our lives, and then met with the nihilist nature of this world that we would not cope with, and thus made up reasons and answers.

There are plenty of examples of this phenomenon. It's not exclusive to organized religion, have a look at all those things parents say to their children in an attempt to get them to behave better like:
Don't make weird faces, cuz when the clock strikes your face will be like that forever.
If you hit your mom, you hands will grow above your grave.
If you don't behave, Santa will only bring you coal.
I'd consider 'practical true' a better word for this category of phenomenons, as we already have such a thing as metaphorical true and it means something vastly different, having more to do with figurative speech.

Multiple times when I explained the actual full "argument", they responded "Really!!!? People believe that?" LoL!
I consider the 3 game session to be rather like an inoculation against the fallacious thinking that places them at risk of indoctrination. So, thank you Stephen - it's worth every cent! 👍😁
Will need an expansion though - 10 arguments means the game gets stale quickly. Perhaps, famous non-religious fallacious philosophical arguments, or political ones. Ohhhh... *A conspiratorial thinking edition!* This is something people need saving from also, and the game format is a nice non-threatening approach.

Really the only reason you can sit there in your warm house and make videos is because brave people go out into the world and defeat the monsters that you'd otherwise have to face yourself.
I mean, I understand that there is a large portion of the population for whom military service or law enforcement is something that only the "proles" do....but to pretend it isn't a thing anymore? Sheesh. Maybe I am being too harsh.
In my family, we take a hard look at places like Iraq/Syria or El Salvador and decide we don't want animals like ISIS or MS13 running amok where we live, so we consider risking our lives in service to whack those moles when they pop up to be a viable and morally good option.
Unfortunately nowadays, there are many parents who would cry, wail, and consider themselves to have failed if their offspring chose to join the Marines instead of go to college.

@@bbainter7880 "Really the only reason you can sit there in your warm house and make videos is because brave people go out into the world and defeat the monsters that you'd otherwise have to face yourself."
I hate to break this to you but no western military action conducted since WW2 has actually served to make western countries safer or protect us from anything. In fact everything they've done particularly since the Gulf War has made the world as a whole less safe. You talk about not wanting people (yes people. Not animals though I'm sure dehumanizing them makes it much easier to live with the violence you've been involved in perpetrating for no good reason) like ISIS running amok when America and its illegal wars are what lead directly to their existence. Much like Americas war on drugs lead directly to the inevitable existence of groups like MS13.
I suggest you ditch the jingoism because frankly it's a cult like mentality all of its own that blinds you both to the actual causes of the problems you decry and the role you end up playing in creating and perpetuating them.
And to be clear I say this as someone who is not inherently opposed to military intervention. There are times when military intervention is required. The aforementioned WW2 being a great example or my own countries long history of peace keeping operations whose scope was largely to protect civilians in regional conflicts. But if you think fighting in illegal and unjustified wars against problems your country created and which the wars serve no purpose other than to exacerbate based on all available evidence is a viable and morally good option then you've bought into the cult of american imperialism hook, line, and sinker and you and every other person alive owe it to themselves and to the rest of the human race to find better paths forward.
I'm genuinely sorry that you view your service as positively as you do because the actual outcomes show your service accomplished nothing beyond making the world a worse place for everyone. Even people in the west. I am very sorry that you've bought into imperialistic nonsense and even more sorry that you likely have friends who also bought in and who died for less than nothing.
But yes, while I'm not a parent, if I were I would consider myself to have failed if any child of mine viewed military intervention and service the way you do because the way you view such service is nothing but myth divorced from the reality of its actual effects on the world. I have no inherent problem with military's existing or with anyone choosing to serve. I do have a problem with perpetuating bad reasons for both though.

@@bbainter7880 I'm a German. Statistically speaking, our military is a rounding error compared to the size of our population. Taking it one step more, combat fatalities within our military are even more so within statistical fuzziness.
So yes, "none of us will die in combat" is pretty much true, just not 100% scientifically accurate.
As an example, and taking only Afghanistan for this statistic: In the 13 years of 2002-2015, the USA has lost ~2.355 men in the Afghanistan conflict. The US armed forces number roughly 1.3 million men. That's 0,18% losses.
Compared to the US population of ~328 million people, that's 0,00071%.
So yeah, when speaking colloquially about probabilities, "no one of us" is going to die in combat.
PS: Math might not be correct, but the absolute numbers are.

I love the fact Stephen is genuinely trying to find the baby in the bath water.
There does seem to be a deep message within all religions depending on the sect you focus on.
    Esoteric Christianity/Gnosticism- Christianity
    Sufism - Islam
    Zen - Buddhism
    Taoist philosophy - Taoism
Hindu philosophy/ chakra system - Hinduism
    Teachings of Thoth - Egyptian
These are to name a few religions that all share the same message of a higher perspective, unburdened by our ego.
It’s a lot to take in but they all seem to speak of understanding the nature of the ego and psychological behaviour that will benefit our wellbeing.

Also Stephen if you read this I run a TH-cam channel based on growing myself and my understanding of reality (whatever the fuck reality is).
I’d love the chance to talk to you a bit more about this in detail. If there’s any bullshit in my reasoning you’re the one that I feel will be able to flush it out

@@steelsurfercore5642 I don’t disagree with any point that video made.
The philosophies in those religious sects do not make claims of knowing what started all this. These religions are all forms of deism (as far as understand)
All these philosophies do is grant you knowledge of self.

Ego is the cause of all human suffering and we should be destroying our ego because if we destroy it, we can break the 3,000+ years of suffering, war and conflict that humanity keeps forcing to repeat.
One day, you and everyone you love will die. And beyond a small group of people for an extremely brief period of time, little of what you say or do will ever matter. This is the Uncomfortable Truth of life. And everything you think or do is but an elaborate avoidance of it. We are inconsequential cosmic dust, bumping and milling about on a tiny blue speck. We imagine our own importance. We invent our purpose-we are nothing.
