The young couple, with their two young children, dreamt of an escape - a haven within the bustling city. We, the architects, took on this challenge, eager to craft a space that whispered serenity. Given their free-spirited nature, the brief was clear: create a "dreamy" home, one that resembled a tranquil garden cafe, a world away from the urban chaos.
With a tight timeframe of just three months, we delved into the pre-existing single-story structure. The sturdy wooden latticed veranda and the fresh plastered walls held a certain charm, and we decided to retain them. This existing framework then became the canvas upon which we painted our vision. Inspired by nature, we chose steel beams that mimicked the branching patterns of a thriving forest, integrating them seamlessly with the old.
Gone was the idea of a monotonous, narrow tube house. We envisioned a playful arrangement of "stacked small houses," each with its own unique height. This not only added visual interest, but also addressed practical concerns. The varying rooflines minimized harsh sunlight and ensured proper drainage, while strategically placed windows brought in ample natural light and ventilation. Throughout, we incorporated imagery reminiscent of peaceful Vietnamese countryside homes - familiar rooflines and window frames - a subtle homage to the family's heritage.
The ground floor unfolded like a secret garden. A small front courtyard offered space for parking, while a backyard bloomed with greenery. Stepping inside, the living room and kitchen seamlessly blended together, fostering a sense of togetherness. Tucked away, a multi-purpose room awaited the grandmother's visits, a space imbued with comfort. But the jewel of the ground floor was the veranda, transformed into a lush green haven, an ideal spot for family relaxation and a delightful extension of the living area.
The upper floor continued the theme of light and ventilation. Open spaces housing the bedrooms - a master suite and two children's rooms - ensured a bright and airy atmosphere. A highlight, however, was the rooftop - a dedicated space for reading and stargazing, a place where the family could connect with the vastness above. This compact house, despite its size, resonated with warmth. It facilitated constant visual connections, fostering a sense of togetherness and joy. As the project reached completion, we knew we had achieved something special - a dreamy respite, a testament to the power of creative collaboration.

Elegant because it looks simple. Privacy and with an open space. Obviously the cats approved. Love it.
