    This is a great video. Thank you for this information into my early retirement for my Great Loop adventure and travel and life out my life on the water.

    Ooof! What a great video, especially with the budget at the beginning. That is an insane amount of money monthly. I have been wanting to buy a houseboat or a cruiser for so many years. I could afford it now but I didn't think that all the other expenses would triple my monthly cost.

    Much appreciate the information you give about the close cost to what it takes to own and live on a nice boat.

    Given it's 2023, just wondering if getting a sea ray 340 as far back as say 2006-2007 is hazardous? Hazardous meaning is it too old and I should budget for more things to fix? Any and all comments welcomed by those who have gone through it. Thanks in advance.

    • @CruisingCalypso
      @CruisingCalypso  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Great question. The 340 is a great sized boat. Plenty of room for day boating and overnighting but not to big and expensive to operate. 2006-2007 certainly not to old, you can go older and still get a great boat! Sundancers are pretty tough boats.that hold up well assuming they are taken care of. As long as the engines have been maintained, manifolds replaced as needed, and other maintenance items taken care of, you will be fine. Th one thing you will need to look into is I belie th e 8.1s horizon engines that the model has , used something called the "cool fuel" module. This is a device that water cools the fuel pump to try to prevent vapor lock on hot days. Depending on which gen of this module, early versions can be problematic . I believe th e issues were worked out with the gun III version which can be retrofitted if necessary. Not a large cost item but they can be a headache. The earlier 340s through 2002 ish has the 7,4 l motors, similar power and no cool fuel but the boat was a different design. Other areas to be aware of. The water system is pretty robust but has filters that can clog if the water sits around for a while. Easy to clean out. That pretty much it. Happy to discuss more. I have been on many 340s.

      @@CruisingCalypso thanks so much for your reply. It helps alot as I am currently looking at 2002-2007 340 Sun dancers. They fit the bill in terms of price, size of boat, and functionality of the boat.

    Is there anything like the Carver but in the 40ft range, equipped with Diesel engines, and capable of getting up on plane with a cruising speed of around 25-30kts and a top speed closer to 35-40kts or better? Not necessarily looking for one in THIS price range, just a general curiosity. It also doesn't necessarily need to be capable of that speed from the factory, but the hull and drives should be able to hold up to an engine swap that could theoretically double/triple the power.

    • @CruisingCalypso
      @CruisingCalypso  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cruising boats capable of running at 25-30 with diesel power can be had. Most of them will top out at low 30s. Getting to 40 knots for a diesel boat requires a lot of HP. Definitely possible but why?

    • @Drunken_Hamster
      @Drunken_Hamster ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CruisingCalypso I like to go fast but don't wanna mess with turbines and hate the fuel consumption of gassers. The engine swap I was considering was 2-4 1000hp Cummins 6bt. No, they don't make them from the factory like that, so you won't be able to find specs on them. But that's the whole point of an engine _swap._
      Just for note 1000hp spec 6bt can rev to or over 4000rpm and still produce about double that hp number in lb-ft of torque.

    Curious, why wouldn't you consider the Carver for open ocean? Is it stability related, motor related? Or just quality in general that it cannot handle that type of usage? Just wondering.

    • @CruisingCalypso
      @CruisingCalypso  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thanks for your question. Carver made good boats, now sadly out of business. Generally speaking, this class of boat including many Searays, Cruisers and Regal boats are really intended for coastal cruising or within 50 miles from shore. these boats have neither the range or the stability to be long distance ocean cruisers like a Nordhavn or a Flemming. The is s good. thing because a Norhavn is too much boat for coastal cruisng. Its all about matching the tool to the job.

    No way. Projecting. Bayliner or Meridian sport trawler/cruiser with diesels smashes these boats in every category at this price point. Edit: Good effort though, good effort.

      That's a broad range and would include a number of different vessels. At the upper end of your budget you can get into a larger 40-48 vessel that's is early 2000's or a new boat 37-40 from the later 2005-2012. A lot of options for you!
