The first time I heard this song it became my favorite, and still is today. A friend played this for me for my surprise 21st Birthday, greatest surprise present ever... No song will ever be greater to me :)
I wouldn't care if not a soul on this earth liked this song..... I LOVE IT! When I hear this song it makes me feel so many different things, and all that I love feeling:)))
The things I love, and that are important to me I am very passionate about. Would do anything & everything for it/them. I am a dedicated friend, loyal girlfriend, and always put those people that are good to me FIRST! ;))). Good people are easy to find, Great people are hard to find.
The way that he sings with so much emotion... He doesn't hold back, but he don't lose himself... It really inspires me. And in this day and age, I can't say that about much. (I know this doesn't come from this day and age, but you get it)
Its supposed to be a song about a man who just received news of his brother who died overseas at war. I always figured that he sang the words the way he does because he cares more about the powerful emotions involved in the story rather that technical things like perfect pronunciation.Always very moving.
I think Ed enjoys mushing the lyrics differently each time ;-) I sat on the shore of a lake contemplating my life back in 1997. This song brings me right back to that beautiful place and that frightening decision. "I don't wanna stay". I had definitely never been the boxer... I left and started again.
It means that it holds the power of time in it's music and that something significant happened to you uopn hearing this beautiful song for the first time.
One of my favorite versions of this song ever. The second of only two times they ever played it acoustically, to the best of my recollection(this is the '96 Bridge Benefit; the first was at Bridge '94).
Wow! I thought I had most all Pearl Jam albums, but I just heard this for the first time the other day. I never buy those "Best of" albums. So that's how I missed it... A wonderful, beautiful song......
the guitar for this song is so inspiring and motivating, it open ups different dementions of playing for me just watching Mcready's many slight variations of the song.
It's a very personal song about a friend who died in war, and the message is not commercial. He doesn't want it recopied. This song would be an all-time commercial great if it was revamped; the fact that he does not let us know the true lyrics makes the song and the message all the more sincere.
my all time favorite song...... i dont think anyone really knows whatsits really about, i have heard alot of different therories but i just know i love the way it makes me feel when i hear it..... seems kinda like a sad song, this is the one i listen to when i know i need a good cry!!!! helps to cleanse the soul!!!!
It is hard to say this is one of the best songs written since the only consistent lyric in its performances is "I don't know whether I was the boxer or the bag", however, if there is a best song ever "not" written, this is certainly it. Love it so much.
This seems to stay as one of my favourite songs. I think pj are so well loved because they write music you want to sing along to (in a group or alone) - songs that speak to you and through you. I guess their songs let you have a voice, and if thats one of their goals as artists they're nailing it. Thats why I like them anyway.
The best way to describe him is an Artist Of Emotion, not Material. He does it out of love and is against the greed of record companies and other singers. Thats why they're band is never in the mass media. I wish their were more bands like this
Gave this a thumbs up on TH-cam. Liked it and shared it on Facebook. Tweeted it on Twitter and +'d it on Google. All that's left is an in person ^5 and I'd gladly come over and give you one if I knew where you lived. But in the meantime, all of the above adds up to be ONE BIG FAT DADDY OF A THANK YOU for posting this.
How can i wrote songs on my guitar when pearl jam have wrote everything i love both lyrics and music there is just no need they make me feel full ...they are the best they express me at 100%
Wow. This is the first i've seen and heard with the guitar on a really clean tone. On the other acoustic versions i heard before, the guitar still sounds like an overdriven strat. This one's much more intimate
It's hard to decide which is the best song of a band like Pearl Jam. But I think, in this case, Yellow Ledbetter is probably their best song! Maybe I'll change my mind someday, but this song has so much feeling into it...and that makes it amazing.
I knew the sound of the Pearl Jam in 1994 - in a weekend in the region of the lakes, here in Rio De Janeiro - Brazil - in 1997 I donated to all mine cds, including of the Pearl Jam - for an option spiritual, I disconnect of some hobbyes. I came back to listen to my favourite bands of one 3 years toward here, and, did not lembrrava me to have listened to this song pretty, simply.
All the negative comments below are pointless! Eddie still puts on a GREAT show and I personally like his style. Regardless of the things y'all are saying he still has y'all listening to his music.
This song is the grungiest song of my favorite band pearl jam...the emotion, the hard to understand words...It actually reminds me more of another legendary grunge band Concrete Blonde more than it does a typical PJ song. For those curious check out their song Joey Live in Brazil
I've seen Pearl Jam in concert about 10 times and Eddie never sings the same words twice except "Make me cry". The song so much more about Mike's guitar than the words. Mike is amazing and the song is awesome no matter what words Eddie uses. "I don't whether it's a box or a bag !!!!!"
was asked to play this song in a club. had herd it b4 but was jus a song rite? i lerned it went back to the club, the band broke into it and the crowd went nuts. now That is a powerful song. i have to say these are the kinds of songs that move mts. its a staple now. and eddie vedder is up thier with the great song writers of this age. bravo
i know. the riff is soo sweet. i love it and im a metal guy myself. this song was playing while me and my girl were laying in her bed and shes fixin to go to college. this is a sad song for me..
esta canción es sencillamente perfecta, pero cada vez q' escucho esta versión en particular se me hace imposible no derramar algunas lagrimas... sigo esperando poder verlos algún día.
Every time eddie performs this tune, he rewrites the lyrics to fit his mood/state of the world or economy/feelings that have come about. I love that he can be so versatile and write a new song for every time he plays it. It's pretty fucking cool.
Over the years Pearl Jam has created a quite big collection of great tunes. There is a lot more to discover than Alive, Black or Last Kiss. If you haven't dug deeper into the works of Pearl Jam, my advice is: Just Do It :)
The first time I heard this song it became my favorite, and still is today. A friend played this for me for my surprise 21st Birthday, greatest surprise present ever... No song will ever be greater to me :)

I do not remember anything about toilets, but I am one to speak my mind at times lol...what was I talking about :)
I do remember that now how funny!
You have a good friend Debra :)....wait a minute,... Debra Morgan?...you're dead ! O.O
The way that he sings with so much emotion... He doesn't hold back, but he don't lose himself... It really inspires me. And in this day and age, I can't say that about much. (I know this doesn't come from this day and age, but you get it)
The lyrics change every time he sings it, it's great
So beautiful!!! I love him❤
Ich auch.❤
I had front row to Pearl Jam in the early 90s when I was 16 years old. Mike McCready was amazing then, and even better now.
I've seen Pearl Jam twice and only once did they play Yellow Ledbetter!!! Two of the best shows i've ever seen!!! I just Love Eddie!!!
Eddie's best vocal performance right here!
just beautiful!! Simply stunning, simple, heart tugging, emotional music!! Anyone thats into music that doesnt enjoy this, isn`t into music!!
Its supposed to be a song about a man who just received news of his brother who died overseas at war. I always figured that he sang the words the way he does because he cares more about the powerful emotions involved in the story rather that technical things like perfect pronunciation.Always very moving.
Uh, Pearl Jam forever!
This has been soul music for me, since I can remember and this song is just something special...
Love from Slovenia!
I also don't think that solo guitar performance gets enough props in terms of clarity, difficulty, and just amazingly beautiful notes
I'll never get tired of this man :D So much years and im never bored when hear this song
Good jam.
That guitar has a sound that comes directly from Heaven. Thanks PJ.
Make me cry

This is rightly up there among the greatest solos.... for the feel..... and melody!!! what a masterpiece of a song!!
One of my favorite versions of this song ever. The second of only two times they ever played it acoustically, to the best of my recollection(this is the '96 Bridge Benefit; the first was at Bridge '94).
No words... It makes you feel pacefull, somehow happy.
For me, it's my last song before going home in my work's playlist :-)
Wow! I thought I had most all Pearl Jam albums, but I just heard this for the first time the other day. I never buy those "Best of" albums. So that's how I missed it... A wonderful, beautiful song......
Beautiful!! Eddie's soul and passion are uncompromising!!
What a great song....Don,t know how often i heard that one....still love it!
I love this song, it reminds me of me of a place where i went on vacation and i didnt want to leave, i really miss you guys, you know who you are.
this song is the shit. I love listening to it on a daily basis. Its not just old school either, its for every generation.
This never gets old. Never. GOAT.
I love this song sooo much!! one of their best songs for sure.
I was at this show...best live set I've seen by PJ ever....
My favorite group in the world!!! Missed the chance to go c them recently, think i'll regret that the rest of my life, LOL!!!!!
Oh Ururotrash. How sad. I am sure his spirit touches you from another dimension every time you play this song. Thanks for sharing the song. I love it.
I hear you. I miss the music of the 90's. Long live the beautiful Kurt and Layne. RIP Beautiful angelic brothers......................
the guitar for this song is so inspiring and motivating, it open ups different dementions of playing for me just watching Mcready's many slight variations of the song.
i love the way his voice sound!!! love this song
Goosebumps. Every. Damn. Time.

Best example of emotions matter more than lyrics of a song. I think Eddie can say anything and the song would rock. Love it!
my all time favorite song...... i dont think anyone really knows whatsits really about, i have heard alot of different therories but i just know i love the way it makes me feel when i hear it..... seems kinda like a sad song, this is the one i listen to when i know i need a good cry!!!! helps to cleanse the soul!!!!
love the close-up on McCready's guitar work. beautiful song.
Absolutely brillant!!! Pure magic for the soul.
Great guitar work in this song. I love this band!
What a beautiful song...It makes me reflect on the wonderful things in life
It is hard to say this is one of the best songs written since the only consistent lyric in its performances is "I don't know whether I was the boxer or the bag", however, if there is a best song ever "not" written, this is certainly it. Love it so much.
i usually don't like live versions of songs but this is really good and its a wonderful song!
Few things in life sound as sweet as that guitar intro.. Classic.
I never seem to get tired if this song, i just love it
This seems to stay as one of my favourite songs. I think pj are so well loved because they write music you want to sing along to (in a group or alone) - songs that speak to you and through you. The best way to describe him is an Artist Of Emotion, not Material. He does it out of love and is against the greed of record companies and other singers. Thats why they're band is never in the mass media. I wish their were more bands like this
My favorite version of this wonderful song ever. For those that don't understand what it means...it means whatever you want it to.
Gave this a thumbs up on TH-cam. Liked it and shared it on Facebook. Tweeted it on Twitter and +'d it on Google. All that's left is an in person ^5 and I'd gladly come over and give you one if I knew where you lived.

really the best group.. vedder = 1 of the best singers in the world. produces gold without efford!
que temaaaazzzzzoooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sin duda una de mis bandas re favoritas!!!!!! todo la musica la convierten e magia
the only negative thing there is about this song is that it signals the end of yet another epic performance by Pearl Jam...love them and always will.
He is a god damn genius...Love you Ed! Named my cat after you 11 years ago and he is still rocking! :)
this song always comes on after a long night out with friends on the drive home...the perfect ending to anything.
Me too, just watched it, very good! Had to hear this song again.
It's hard to decide which is the best song of a band like Pearl Jam. But I think, in this case, Yellow Ledbetter is probably their best song! Maybe I'll change my mind someday, but this song has so much feeling into it...and that makes it amazing.
The best part of this song Starts at 1:40.. Breaks me up listening to the notes... Love it!
Can't wait to see Pearl Jam this summer
One of the best one's by PJ!!
God, I love this verision

Show de bola!
All the negative comments below are pointless! Eddie still puts on a GREAT show and I personally like his style. Regardless of the things y'all are saying he still has y'all listening to his music.
I might have had to look up the lyrics for this song, but I know them by heart now!! What a great song!
thanks for posting this song.

was asked to play this song in a club. had herd it b4 but was jus a song rite?

estoy re-encantada con Pearl Jam, el talento perdura en el tiempo.
How is it that I have listened to this song for 20 years, essentially my whole life, and it still hits home almost every time. Ridiculous, man!
Over the years Pearl Jam has created a quite big collection of great tunes. There is a lot more to discover than Alive, Black or Last Kiss. If you haven't dug deeper into the works of Pearl Jam, my advice is: Just Do It :)
damn... there are no words how awesome this song is...
Always loved Mike's work on this song...
