In my first game I actually did lose to the Netherlands as Germany, I made 400 crappy divisions and put them on Czechoslovakia's border and declared war on them instead of just eating them. I couldn't push and had so much tunnel vision I didn't notice the Dutch owned half of my country lol

In my first game, I sent 15 paratrooper divisions to invade Belgium, who all died. Then my army went on the attack on the German-Belgian border until the divisions were basically dead. The Belgians counter-attacked and almost beat me but I encircled them once they advanced into Germany.
Then I attacked Poland and they capitulated me.
In my games as Austria I always refuse Anschluss and it usually turns out fine
Me as a beginner:
- Picks Japan
- Searches for a new strategy and division templates against China
- Gets mauled by Chinese manpower
- Repeat

The first time I play HOI4 i was losing a war as Mexico against Guatemala cause i put my entire army on one tile and then i noticed that you can get encircled 😔
My first game was as México too, but I didn't know you could get war goals on central America via focus tree so I had to wait for WT to go to 100% to start justifying wars, then idk why the US declared war on me but it ended on a kind of stalemate cuz I covered the naval invasions and had level 7-10 forts across the entire border XD
I feeled a god when I defeated Guatemala(I only had 6 hours and it's the only war, without couting civil wars, than I winned)
That i actually did as a beginner:
- Spend almost half of hour choosing the country to play. Stopped on Soviet Union, although i thinking about him at the beginning;
- Looked at interface. Looked on focus tree. Looked at tank and division constructor. Get scared.
- Dropped and forget the game about half of the year. Watch a bunch of thematic videos on the TH-cam.
- Gets inspiring from these videos. Goes back to the game. Still scared, but these time i just decide to play with console, like in sandbox mod.
- Match after match i finally gets some understanding of the game.

You’re pretty wise second guessing yourself about the game first then jumping back in when you felt ready.
I knew a lot about hoi4 when I first started so I actually held France. I invaded Poland and took 1.1 million casualties. Then managed to cap Paris with shitty 12 width cav.
The british naval invaded and recapped France then soviets decalred war and I died.

I also known hoi4 since before there is any dlc, this year I am fortunate enough to have the hardware to play it for the first time.
first times plays, I chose neutral countries since I thought it's good to learn how the game works before fighting.

This was how i learnt too, when i started out everything seemed overwhelming so played sweden historical, which allowed me to work out how to build industry and mess with troops and how to manage my production output, then when i was confident with that I moved on to playing canada which gave me a taste of combat without the burden of being a major
What I did as beginner a lot of times :
(I have 610 hours by the time I type this)
- Take major countries like USSR and just try to declare war as fast as possible on neighboring countries.
- Entirely skip the political advisors + military advisors.
- Spam as much troops as possible even tho I didn't know I didn't have any equipment.
- Entirely skip the airforce and navy, I had no idea how to use it.
- Every battleplan was set to aggressive.
I won 0 wars legit.
When i bought this game, i was so excited to conquer, but when i launched the game and saw so many buttons, i just backed out and didn't touch it again after a month, now im actually a professional at this game i lost to Luxembourg as soviet union. Praise Paradox.
But the soviets don’t border Luxemburg.

0:39 This was literally my first HOI4 Berlin-Moscow axsis pack game, except that I was also at war with poles and danes who were in front of Berlin.
The Italians, who were also in the alliance, pulled me into their war too quickly.
But amazingly, I mastered it, it was very exhausting.
So far, in 500 hours of playing hoi4, I haven't felt the need to play berlin-moscow pack again.
Everybody always shitting on Italy, but most of the time they are my most reliable allies
In my case, I did ribbentrop first, got poland then did Moscow axis, and actually won the game

I casually right click on France an I see the declare war button. So I start to search how to make the declare button available. After this first game I went again but this time I was doing good and I defeated Poland and ended up in a stalemate with France.
did you try to invade via the maginot? (border with france) that land has level 10 forts with a total of a -150% attack so its impossible to break. you thus invade belgium to go around the forts
@@Suppexion yep being an history nerd helped so I attacked Netherlands and Belgium and there I got the stalemate. Now with 1k hours i still remember it

Same. The game doesn't let me move troops to Königsberg and neither recruit new divisions in Königsberg, despite Königsberg is Germany, isn't it? I don't understand it.
Always defeat Poland but East Prussia is always sacrificed to them. 😔💀

When I was a beginner, I declared war on the US as France using allowdiplo. I played on civilian difficulty. I eventually get naval invaded and then I quit the game. Good times, I tell ya
The naval invasions are the worst. You think you’re doing good, then you check your capitulation status. “73%? How?” And then you zoom out to see half your country consumed.

I played italy and the war in ethiopia a few times to understand the basic warfare mechanics
with the help of a few online guides it was fairly easy, not sure why the devs didn't make a pocketmap to enable new players to learn the game
and now i want to understand ck3 and I have no clue what to do so I put the game down LMAO
Ck3 is really easy to understand compared to HOI4 (Except the vassal part that is confusing af) Just check out the scroll at the top, it will tell you what you need to do. Then when you want to war with someone just wait till you have the opprotunity to marry someone that has a claim on their land, then invade them.

You forgot the beginners don't know what a focus tree is, so they declare war on Austria and lose since they don't know that you can annex them with a simply clicking a button

I played as Democratic Germany and focus on the East, Poland is quite easy to beat but the Soviets take me a lot of time even with the Allies' help

My first hoi4 experience wasnt quite this bad, but as it always happens my first game ended with my troops being slaughtered in the eastern front while i had no idea how to use my navy and i was naval invaded and died.
I have 674 hours and I still dont know how to use the navy

I won against Poland then Italy in axis with me invaded Switzerland and Switzerland joined allies. Then Netherlands won against me when i was defending from Switzerland lol
Way to good for beginner. Me as a beginner choosed 1939 scenario. Moved division to france border and other all sended to warsaw. Blitzkrieg was too bad, i didnt know why youtubers easily capitulating poland within month. Also, after some learning, i opened hoi4 again, then i win battles(division vs division), but i was bad at micro, and didnt know why my planes didnt working( i drawed them, nut didnt know how to activate them). After 1 year, i take poland with high casualties. I feeled good about it.
Now i am pro at this game
First time playing this game I was like “oh yeah Poland you are mine now”, after a few months, Poland still exists, and the French moved in to Berlin, that’s when I realised I have a border with them and the French can actually attack.
In my girst game, I managed to defeat Poland, but didn't break through Belgium to conquer France. Then, I attacked from the Italy, almost conquered France, but Italy was defeated by naval invasions. Sorry for bad grammar :\

As an HOI4 player, I lost as germany to Checoslovakia bc the allies had joined in. Also I staged a coup in texas which did not go well, which made the USA join the war early. The year was 1938.
When I was a beginner playing Germany I didn’t go through the Benelux but I knew I couldn’t go through the maginot so I actually moved my troops through my ally Italy
My first Hearts of Iron was "Hearts of Iron" literally the first game, so of course I won the war when I first tried HOI IV, but honestly, I was baffled at how easy the game was.
I lost the war as germany because tannu tuva naval invaded me while my whole army on the eastern front got encircled by the red army due to lack of division width
Remind me 3 years ago when I just start to play HOI4 as Soviet Union. Focusing too much to capture Helsinki and not realizing they already eat half of European part of Soviet Union
When I first started I was losing to Estonia as the soviet union, then (because I never did purge) the civil war happened.

My first game probably went different than most peoples given I was doing a MP run with a friend (he played a few times before me but he was also still new) and we decided it would be a good idea to do France and Poland… in a 1939 start. And well I probably don’t need to say anything but it went exactly as one would expect.

I had a friend start as Italy. He was getting stamped out by Ethiopia. He also started a war with Switzerland while he was still at war with Ethiopia and got roflstomped. That was a spicy meatball.
i started in 1939 when i play hoi4 first time and idk how to add army commander i just select every divisions and get them to every tyle by hand and i declared war to poland then instantly the game being stuck nothing happened.
As a beginner with 2,723.5 hours in the game, I can confirm this is true
When i was a beginner i got poland and others with no sweat. battleplan, troops did it by themselves basically. That was in 2016 when it was hoi 4 was very beginer friendly. But France was a huge problem, i didn't realise they had forts on loraine so you can figure out what happened next. :)

On my first game of HOI4, in the tutorial, I actually almost lost to Ethiopia. I thought they were so weak and i didnt understand game mechanics, so I selected all of my divisions and did a manual order to rush the capital. My divisions proceeded to get encircled as they abandoned the ports and frontlines. They luckily managed to fall back, regroup, and use a normal attack order with frontlines to win, but its still a funny story.
This was also the same game where I spent half an hour looking for bar where you give orders to your air wings (air superiority, close air support, strategic bombing, etc.)
I actually lost to Ethiopia and even now I struggle against it. Ethiopia is not that weak at all when your forces are only marginally better.

My first time a friend helped ma understand and i picked the soviets. I went to war with poland asap without purging my generals and lost to my own country in a civil war while my friend tried to help me lol.

The issues I had was always with front lines and their orders. The units weren't hard to figure out after a google search but I just didn't register why my frontlines wouldn't always be right for some reason.

In my second game I was playing germany, i was doing all right at the start, annexed poland, formed the berlin-moscow pact, and then soviet union dragged me into ww2 and I capitulated to switzerland again

I started playing hoi4 a month ago and I played a few singleplayer games. I think I’m still forgetting something but I played a multiplayer game with my friend (I was Italy and he was Spain). Somehow I managed to get a LOT of France to the point where Germany just gave me Vichy France. While my buddy got only 1 province 💀.
I absolutely demolished France in Africa and even invaded Portugal with my buddy but ironically I got 60% war participation 💀💀💀 so I got most of Portugal. I only have 3 generals though and I don’t know how troops have the division tree or smth? Yeah I’m bad at that but I still demolish people in normal difficulty. I even learnt naval invasions!

In my first game i was italy if i remember, firstly i got defeated by abbyssinia, i lost somalia and eritrea, then got extremely defeated by france and uk in libya. Then losed piedmont. Then i just ragequitted.
When you join Berlin-Moscow, everyone around you will join the allies. Even Switzerland.
In my first game as Germany everything was beauti with the Netherlands, but with Belgium I had a new border along the Elbe River

Austria annexed all but Prussia and puppeted me
In my first game, I declared on Poland with no armies or army plans (I didn't even know those existed), got pushed back all the way to maybe eight or so tiles from Berlin, then I zoomed out and saw that France had completely consumed the other half of the country. If I were to revert back to the save I had before giving up, there'd probably be a 50k supply deficit in everything, no fuel, I'd be 80% capitulated, and I'd have at most twenty divisions, down from 30 because at least ten got wiped out when Konigsberg got surrounded.
I just started this game and on my first game I pretty much beat Poland but then the UK and France invaded me really early on while my army was in Poland, I went to the second game, got Poland, Got Belgium, Got the Netherlands and then I went for France. I made the stupid mistake of attacking the Maginot Line and my army was pushed back. Fun game
I can tell this is silly as a paradox player yet I have next to no idea what’s happening here as a beginner player to hoi4 myself

I am still a beginner and have restarted about 17 times to try and encircle Italian troops as Ethiopia but after some consultations with some TH-cam videos I managed to hold them in the mountains.
Unfortunately, even though I won against Italy, I got stuck as a puppet master with a war against Yemen with no navy for my naval invasion and had to wait until Eritrea was annexed...
I did a detour to Road56 mod after the 13th try, though, and I got to say I had a lot more fun with Ethiopia then, than in the base game.

My first game, I played Greece - mind you this is before any of the DLC, so it was Greece with National Unity and a default focus tree. It was such a miserable experience that I refunded the game. Welp, with 2k hours playtime now, that refund did not last.
