Very impressed with Tony's drum skills more impressed with his humbleness in sharing with other drummers talking about the basics to the more advanced.
You took the words right out of my mouth man!! When you play, and you get in that groove, and are so in the moment! You do things that you otherwise couldnt before, its like a higher power takes over and you become the witness of what you doing! That feeling is what i strive for everytime i play!! Again, well said!!
i had the pleasure of playing a nice roland kit at guitar center and i couldnt pull myself away from it. being able to incorporate melodies into drums by yourself is just magical. hope i get to own one of these kits some day.
LORD DOOM Yea.. I learned on an E kit and once i went to acoustic it was like learning over again.. Doubles didnt quite feel as nice lol.. But yea, this dudes nasty either way..
Very well said and I totally agree. I get caught up in the technical way too much. As a teacher, it's hard for me to "teach" feel. It's something I'm really working on personally so I'll let you know if I figure it out :) - Jared
This guy is one of the musicians, i can´t stop smiling when i see and hear them play. He also got such an great philosophy behind his drumming... GREAT
I feel that I am improving after 21 months. This week is special for me as the keyboard guy called me yesterday morning and asked me to fill in at the senior center as the drummer will be away on Thursday. I hope I can do it from 1 to 3. First real gig!! Any advice for a new drummer? Thanks. Bettina
Been following Tony since I was very young (im just a couple years younger than him) and one thing that strikes me is although he's always been great, over time he's always evolving to be even greater of a drummer. I see a lot of drummers or musicians that are great and you check them out years later and they still sound almost similar, but stuff he's doing.. the whole crazy time signature, different styles he improvises through, you can tell that the guy is still a student of himself and is always exploring new boundaries
Thanks for having him in. I got to see his drum clinic with Roland and it was awesome. This had some great camera angles to see what his hands were actually doing and there were a few good tips that I picked up. Thanks again, guys! Don't let the negatives drive you down!
I hate how everyone is like why is he so good but he is only touring with jay z. You don't understand how much he gets paid!! You act like he is restricted on his playing. Of course he is keeping pocket most of the time but that's a drummer's job. And if you ever seen any of his videos of him playing on tour you can tell he loves playing hip hop because of where he grew up. He also gets to solo too. Jay z understands he is a very talented musician and he doesn't want to choke his ability.
Tony's highest profile gig is Jigga. But he is always playing somewhere with other cats. I see him playing around LA all the time. He's doing the music he really likes.
A lot of jazz allows for improvisational and very loose playing. Fusion, prog, etc. More complex music where the drummers are also a highlight in the band and not just kept for background time. Not to say in those genres that the drummer shouldn't lay it down and keep time, but a nice and easy pocket isn't always what needs to be played and sometimes would be very unfitting in certain musical contexts.
Not Really, he has gotten a lot of attention. when I saw his solo when he was 12 from 97 I saw it in 07 I freaked out & sent it to every Musician friend I knew.
I think most gospel style drummers out there are underrated in the mainstream because relatively no one really knows who they are. Usually because "aint my style". But any real drummer out there is totally aware of these guys imo.
Because he doesn't do extreme tech death metal, ignorant noobs and keyboard warriors just dismiss Tony Royster Jr's masterful talent as they only drool over mindless blast beats and machine gun double bass played without an ounce of groove to save their lives.
Tony...What a wonderful drummer you are my friend. to watch the clinic was truly fantastic.I did have the pleasure of talking to the great Buddy Rich and even have some help from him for drumming when he was on tour in England. Keep up the great work Tony...cheers from the UK
Plus it seems like acoustic > electric money wise. If you have a low budget and get a cheap electronic kit it's always going to sound, feel, and even look crappy, whereas you can pick up an acoustic for a few hundred dollars and tune it up to be as good if not better than an electric that would cost much more. This is just my observation though, I may be wrong
In my opinion. Tony is the best drummer i have ever seen. You completly trust that he'll always amaze you every single time he plays. Incredible talent!
wow,my dad, wanted to me to watch this and he said it would help me with MY drumming skills,so I watch this and it helped me a little bit so I'm hoping I can get better, thank u guys for increasing my drumming skills and hoping I can get better and better.
Damn can this dude play. I love how he's able to convey complex musical ideas and thought processes into simple explanations. That 13/16 section inspired me to try that time signature for the first time.
orangecucamonga In this example, he's taking those 13s pretty quick, but at the end of the day 13 is just 6+7 and we can all play in 6, So just add an extra beat to every other bar of 6. You can think of 11 in a similar way. Here, you still think of two bars of 6, but drop a beat every other bar of 6.Groups of 13, 11, 7 and 5 are frequently used in prog rock. For examples, listen to Rush, Dream Theater, Neal Morse, Transatlantic or Porcupine Tree (to name but a few)
Yep, there are so much more important things than speed on drumming, and he just talked about them in this video. I play on amateur level for 15 yrs and hardly seen such an inspirational video. this guy is clever, has discipline and respect for the public. Also one of the greatest drummers in the world.
Tony Royster Jr is the best in the world!!!! Thanks to Drumeo for sharing dis u'l rock!!!this particular video will definitely change diff drummers perspective !!!!
I like the drumset. I have the v-drum kit but I never liked the sounds... I had to get the toontrack superior drummer packs... that made eveything 100x better.
He is such a polite educated person that you can see was brought up by parents that really had there kids best interest Great job Mr and Mrs Royster I am amazed at what a great drummer and human being Tony Royster is
Sorry, but u have to say this, he plays with Jay-z??? He is so amazingly talented and he plays for Jay-Z??? And some will say he does it for the money, but really this is what is wrong with the world.
Your taste for music doesn't define what is "absolutely" good or not. Don't be prejudicial, Jay-Z is a great musician, even though I don't like his music.
Joey van Leeuwen Jay-Z didn't change shit. He's a good rapper, end of story. As far as money goes? I'm a musician in fairly popular band in my home town and feels nice to get paid for playing guitar for a couple hours. If I had the chance I'd hop on with a big band for the money. I don't have to like the music because at the end of the day, I'm getting paid to play guitar.
Maybe listen to some of the live arrangements of his music before judging..? His Coachella set, and the Live @ Brooklyn Centre sets are especially awesome. As far as I'm aware, Adam Blackstone was his MD on the last tour. Look up some of stuff he's done... listen to arrangements and compositions of the live shows, then maybe give an opinion.. you might be surprised. It'll give an idea of the kind of ridiculous talent and musicianship these kats have. :)
This is the lesson i've been after!! thank you Drumeo for getting Tony Royster JR in the studio, i remember watching his live performance when he was 12 a couple years ago, amazing video and haven't seen it or any of his other videos in a long time. Bout time i started listening to his stuff again :D
Great Stuff! I am a rudimental drummer. Drum corps experience and teaching experience. Tony has some great advice in the technique and approach area in application to the drum set. I use these same ideas in my area of drumming. It's all about physics. Being efficient. Working smarter and not harder. Great stuff Drumeo!
Jaw hit the floor... I haven't even begun to learn the drums... If, at the end of my life, I am 1/100th as good as this guy, I will have lived a full and happy life!
I love this drummer.. He's playing is great and inspiring, he's very kind, never gets a "victim of success", he has all my respect for that. Enjoyed it
Damn...I've been doing this since I was 8.I'm 60 now,and I don't think I've been more impressed by a young player.I've seen Elvin,Tony,Billy C.,DeJohnette,Porcaro,Billy Hart,Gadd, and most in between. My brother you have a gift.Stay humble and the Lord is gonna bless you beyond your wildest imagination.Respectfully,RMWearing-Detroit
While few (none) of us will play like Tony Royster Jr., all of us can improve. Thanks for a lot of good practical ideas for improving technically and as musicians.
I can't say that I am a fan of Tony's music. However, his ability and mastery of the instrument is astounding. He has to have one of the fastest and smoothest single stoke rolls in the business. That is what impresses me most. He seems to come across as a down to earth sort. Some people with that level of ability could also be very arrogant. Happily, that is not the case here!
I really respect Tony because I too grew up on drumming, and never learned sheet music until I was 18.. plus I love his ode to Buddy Rich which is the Drum God. Great tips for the intermediate drummer to understand.
How can anyone dislike Tony.I can understand if you have other favorite drummers but this guy has shown with his chops and musicality to be one of the greats
Thanks J. speaking from experience, when i try to say "I am going to do a paradiddle here" I mentally focus too much on the LRRL RLLR and I loose the free-ness of my hands. But when I let go & release, I am less focused & more instinctive. I allow the "groove" to take over. Learning becomes easier, rudiments are easier & the body becomes less tense. I call it an "altered state". I think you have figured it out, at this stage, like Luke Sky, just let it go & trust your feelings. Let me know!
Right, which is what this whole presentation was about. All the speed demonstrations address the issue of control which is just as important as musical creativity.
I agree with Jared. I'm just about to watch this video so I don't know what kind of lesson Tony did, but Tony is absolutely one of the best drummers in the history. Doing more research on Tony will definitely change your opinion on him!
I personally believe that posture, technique, and attitude are the 3 most important key elements in drumming. Emphasis more the attitude. And Tony has all 3 elements so profoundly.
28:50 I got emotional it was so beautiful how he played that song. The way he tests the boundaries and abstractness of time signatures is so breathtaking.
You have a great drumer that came to chill and teach you how to become a better drummer and you dislike this...haha what can anyone possibly dislike about this great lesson?
I've listened to Tony since he was growing up…very cool…very Dennis… The amazing thing here is his electronic drum sound…WOW what a live sound! All you drummers can appreciate that as well. I'm trying to figure out how he got THAT!!
"A musical approach - you use it because you need it." Happy to see things put in perspective. A quick search of drum search terms tells you "how to play drums faster" is the most searched. As these guys know, speed is the *least* importance between Tony Royster and you.
"Can't go fast if you're tight"
Life advice, everyone.
Darius "Just Another Atheist" M Play with traditional grip.
Very impressed with Tony's drum skills more impressed with his humbleness in sharing with other drummers talking about the basics to the more advanced.
Yes
Right when Tony is doing something that I think I could pull off he goes and does it twice as fast an I'm like *~*
This drummer is extremely talented and he seems to be a very nice guy! Calm, articulate, and not pretentious at all.
This Kat just told a lifetime of knowledge in just a few minutes. How can you not want to work out with him. I'm speechless about his skill.
You took the words right out of my mouth man!! When you play, and you get in that groove, and are so in the moment! You do things that you otherwise couldnt before, its like a higher power takes over and you become the witness of what you doing! That feeling is what i strive for everytime i play!! Again, well said!!
Tony is so great!!! humble, grateful and so willing to share everything
i had the pleasure of playing a nice roland kit at guitar center and i couldnt pull myself away from it. being able to incorporate melodies into drums by yourself is just magical. hope i get to own one of these kits some day.
this is the first time I've ever watched a whole hour long drumeo video. i was surprisingly entertained the whole time!
this on Thomas Pridgen one are great videos ive watched them over and over again
gospelplayer2 - General RAWR
same
same!
I really like Tony's gratitude, humility, and intelligent breakdown of his drumming genius on this vid.
I love how coherent his soloing is. You sense the groove all the way through.
He's always had such a distinct sound. Super awesome!
Never heard a electric kit sound so natural. They sound real obviously. But you often lose the feel, but his playing really suits them.
***** Yes they do have a better rebound And allow you to actually play a little faster if you can pull it off like him. lol
Please, bring this gentleman back! Thanks for having him on and being great hosts, and thank you, Mr. Royster for your presentation.
24:15 for the fucking WIN.
love seeing dudes slay over a metronome
This guy is one of the musicians, i can´t stop smiling when i see and hear them play. He also got such an great philosophy behind his drumming... GREAT
Me* puts video on and grabs drum sticks
watches 4:30 of the video
puts sticks down. Beginner forever...
Haha don't worry...this is a professional with years and years and years of experience
very cool drum lesson with really good information. Thank you. I am still a beginner but this lesson is very inspiring. Bettina

i really didnt think i was gonna sit here for an hour...
either did i hahahaha
Shreddy Krueger Same here! I am now officially converted to appreciating the V drums. I'll admit, an old man. But this was great.
pepto bismol allowed me to sit here comfortably the entire hour :)
Thanks for having him in. I got to see his drum clinic with Roland and it was awesome. This had some great camera angles to see what his hands were actually doing and there were a few good tips that I picked up. Thanks again, guys! Don't let the negatives drive you down!
One of the greatest.
"Only good things about them is that you can change sounds" But that's the ultimate good thing and the ultimate reason to own a electronic drum set.
I hate how everyone is like why is he so good but he is only touring with jay z. You don't understand how much he gets paid!! You act like he is restricted on his playing. Of course he is keeping pocket most of the time but that's a drummer's job. Tony's highest profile gig is Jigga. But he is always playing somewhere with other cats. I see him playing around LA all the time. He's doing the music he really likes.
I'm sure Tony gets a drum solo each night and has plenty of opportunities to jam hard during Jay-Z's set.
that's a drummers job depending on the music. Not all music requires the pocket.
What kind of music do you mean Joel? Just curious.
Since I saw the performance of Tony, at an age of 12 years old, I follow him and he is for sure a good inspiration. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I think Tony Royster Jr is one of the most underrated drummers.
Not Really, he has gotten a lot of attention. when I saw his solo when he was 12

We talkin bout....Practice......Not the game......PRACTICE
mkingms nice AI reference
WE UP HERE TALKIN BOUT PRACTICE!?!?
Grew up with this guy. Still the same and I'm so so proud of you Tony
Im currently vamping on some chris coleman ya heard!
i like the way he talks about his approaches and techniques...it really all makes perfect sense..and the drumming is insane no doubts there
These electronic drum sounds are cool, but at the end of the day nothing beats a real/acoustic drum sound.
I agree
Plus it seems like acoustic > electric money wise. If you have a low budget and get a cheap electronic kit it's always going to sound, feel, and even look crappy, whereas you can pick up an acoustic for a few hundred dollars and tune it up to be as good if not better than an electric that would cost much more. This is just my observation though, I may be wrong
That depends. Electronic drums suit his style a lot. It really depends on what kind of sound and style you're aiming for.
This is one of the best demonstrations of this Roland set up! An amazing drummer and drum set! Outstanding!
1:05
Just can't...quite..find the...groove....
I just love the guy in the glasses trying to groove with it and failing. :D
Best lesson on drumming and warm ups I have seen on TH-cam!..excellent!
came here because of the "YOU KNOW" version...
what a humble, gifted musician! excellent stuff! thank you!
That metronome sounds like an asian woman working out. ..
With wind breakers? 😂
In my opinion. Tony is the best drummer i have ever seen. You completly trust that he'll always amaze you every single time he plays. Incredible talent!
"So first off I was just automatically fast" Lol must be nice
+Jesse Thompson yeah, how does that even work?
Jesse Thompson hahahaha 😂😂
wow,my dad, wanted to me to watch this and he said it would help me with MY drumming skills,so I watch this and it helped me a little bit so I'm hoping I can get better, thank u guys for increasing my drumming skills and hoping I can get better and better.
Everything he does makes it looks so ez but when you try WTF XD
Staz Gamer i know......
why are you guys not on national television!!!! EVERY drummer would tune in EVERY time!
I play approximately 100-150 gigs a year. Not ONCE have I ever needed to bring my laptop or my iPad. Not once.
Your also not gigging with click tracks nor programming for live arrangements. So there you wouldn't need to. Y'all on different levels for gigs
Old school much?
Lol right
anthony portis You don't need to do any of that regardless of what level you're on.
Now days you do need all of it
OMG...taking drum lesson to a new level! Guys, you are awesome, congrats from Argentina!
Needs more cowbell.
Haha snl classic lol
Damn can this dude play. I love how he's able to convey complex musical ideas and thought processes into simple explanations. That 13/16 section inspired me to try that time signature for the first time.
the 13/16 jam at about 25/6m is fucking inhuman
s'truth! 27:38 "...play that time signature with a band.." HA! Who!? You're alone on this planet you're visiting, son.
The blonde dude is sitting there mouth-agape while he's playing that 13/16.
orangecucamonga In this example, he's taking those 13s pretty quick, but at the end of the day 13 is just 6+7 and we can all play in 6, So just add an extra beat to every other bar of 6. Tony Royster Jr is the best in the world!!!! Thanks to Drumeo for sharing dis u'l rock!!!this particular video will definitely change diff drummers perspective !!!!
I hate his drum set. Especially because it's electric hahahaha.
Jay-Z is an accomplished musician who has changed the way that the human voice is used for music, as is Tony Royster Jr. for the drums.

What if he plays with jayz because he enjoys playing that type of music?
This is the lesson i've been after!! thank you Drumeo for getting Tony Royster JR in the studio, i remember watching his live performance when he was 12 a couple years ago, amazing video and haven't seen it or any of his other videos in a long time.
Enjoyed it
thank you tony for your intelligent & well thought out instructional points of view on all things drumming.
Amazing to hear his approach to the drums. He's not just all speed with no feel. He really understands music and his role as a drummer
Wonderful opening to this. Drum compositions don't usually hold my attention, but this one certainly did.
Enlightening. Thanks for this! Tony is really well spoken, and explains things in easy to understand terms.
Damn...I've been doing this since I was 8.I'm 60 now,and I don't think I've been more impressed by a young player.I've seen Elvin,Tony,Billy C.,DeJohnette,Porcaro,Billy Hart,Gadd, and most in between. My brother you have a gift.Stay humble and the Lord is gonna bless you beyond your wildest imagination.Respectfully,RMWearing-Detroit
great hour!! I was sceptic about the V-drums but the way Tony used it was so creative...awesomeness...and great tips for practising speed
Great, inspiring, entertaining, informative... Very well done! Thanks a lot to Drumeo and Tony Royster!!!
Mega thanks to Tony and freedrumlessons for this great video!
Meet him a couple years ago after a show, was such a nice guy and very down to earth!!
While few (none) of us will play like Tony Royster Jr., all of us can improve. Thanks for a lot of good practical ideas for improving technically and as musicians.
What a refreshing attitude and style of playing this guy has!
Excellent hour spent! Thanks guys!
Tonys the best drummer ALIVE!!! Today. PERIOD!!!
Way too many dislikes. What could people possibly dislike about this helpful video? Tony Royster Jr is humble about his playing.
I really respect Tony because I too grew up on drumming, and never learned sheet music until I was 18.. plus I love his ode to Buddy Rich which is the Drum God. Great tips for the intermediate drummer to understand.
love his feeling it!!! his groove, and motivation that drives us forward.
How can anyone dislike Tony.I can understand if you have other favorite drummers but this guy has shown with his chops and musicality to be one of the greats
I can't believe what an Amazing guy Tony R. is.
Thanks J. speaking from experience, when i try to say "I am going to do a paradiddle here" I mentally focus too much on the LRRL RLLR and I loose the free-ness of my hands. But when I let go & release, I am less focused & more instinctive. I allow the "groove" to take over. Learning becomes easier, rudiments are easier & the body becomes less tense. Right, which is what this whole presentation was about. All the speed demonstrations address the issue of control which is just as important as musical creativity.
love the gated reverb, massive sound, and very tight...
Tony is this generations' Buddy Rich. This is what happens when a drum prodigy grows up! So awesome to watch.
this is amazingly inspiring Tony is such a humble guy, great musician that for sharing
I agree with Jared. I'm just about to watch this video so I don't know what kind of lesson Tony did, but Tony is absolutely one of the best drummers in the history. Doing more research on Tony will definitely change your opinion on him!
Not only is the guy amazing, he didn't even break sweat with those monster chops! Simply amazing!
I personally believe that posture, technique, and attitude are the 3 most important key elements in drumming. Emphasis more the attitude. And Tony has all 3 elements so profoundly.
Awesome, I was suppose to be sleeping now, but I couldn't without the end of the video, congrats and I'm waiting for the band! Thanks a lot!!
This is why Tony Royster Jr. is one of my favorite drummers, he is extremely talented, but he has a lot of class.
Tony is such a nice dude as well as a total beast
Awesome!!! Tony great humble approach. Drumeo guys thanks for putting out great resources you guys rock
How could you possibly dislike this video? Great video! Keep em comin!
Tony royster is my favorite drummer of all time... One of the best in my opnion
I've listened to Tony since he was growing up…very cool…very Dennis…
The amazing thing here is his electronic drum sound…WOW what a live sound! All you drummers can appreciate that as well. I'm trying to figure out how he got THAT!!
This man may be the best drummer that is around on this planet :)
I watched this whole thing on my phone!! Tony Royster Jr. My #1 drummer
Such an amazing person! Brilliant lesson, great work by the Drumeo team! :)
"A musical approach - you use it because you need it." Happy to see things put in perspective. A quick search of drum search terms tells you "how to play drums faster" is the most searched. As these guys know, speed is the *least* importance between Tony Royster and you.
This is a great little showcase for the TD30 kit too :) Great work guys!
Very good point too about looking up and supporting each other.. it's not a competition!
I use your drum stick!! It feels really smooth and it fits my hands!
