There’s an indescribable joy when Jules picks up the kazoo at the beginning of each TYOA and then James immediately lays down the jams. Its a euphoria not found anywhere else on this earth. Also, cheers for the quick Limmy reference 😆
I deeply appreciated the escort mission on the Pirate Homeworld in Metroid Prime 3. You're escorting a squad of demolitions specialists. Only a few need to survive, and they can actually fight for themselves (outside of the highest-level difficulty for when you WANT it hard).
Happy Holidays Jules, Glen, and WhatCulture! - I appreciate the messages at the end. Tues Your Own is one of my favorite shows on TH-cam. You guys really bring list videos to a whole new level. They don’t even feel like list videos..more like remembering video games with old pals. Thanks again.
How about: "Brilliant videogame innovations we now take for granted." Remember how motion capture first changed how cutscenes and eventually gamelpay looked? Remember the first time u played in actual 3D, with, like, polygons?! Let's celebrate these cool things and how far we have come.
thank you for saying escort missions can be the entire game and can be awesome... That's exactly how I describe A Plague's tale 1 & 2! A giant escort mission that is actually awesome!
I recently played Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade from LucasArts and had my childhood destroyed. How about a list of incredible games that should stay in the past?
I'd love to see a list about "Games that became amazing via free patches". No matter if they were fine already at launch, like Stardew Valley adding a local co-op to become the best game for lovers. The list could also be named something snazzy like "Games that put their own review scores to shame".
Now it's time for the reverse. "Missions that makes you go how did they get it wrong?" Perfect example Saints Row the Third where you have to destroy Transmitter Antennas in a UFO. On the tin how could you not have fun? But in game play not so much fun.
I think I got one for ya Jules. "'X' games in a franchise with a one off mechanic/gameplay element that absolutely should be seen more often." Outside of Final Fantasy X's amazing story, battle system and Lvling system, was a neat little concept, and no, I'm not talking bout the always fun Blitzball. I'm talkin bout the Monster Arena, where the owner tasks you with capturing certain number and type of monster, so that he can make newer, stronger versions.
Hey thanks for another great episode and I had a fun idea for a video for next week’s episode and it’s 10 times you’re force to play a video game within a video game to progress forward
In honour of the brilliant depiction of Fenrir in God of War Ragnarok, I suggest : the 9 best depictions of K9 companions. Seriously though, whoever at Santa Monica scripted and designed the scenes with the wolves clearly grew up with dogs. Chefs kiss good.
Zack's last stand in Crisis Core is another hold the line mission I love. The reality of the situation setting in as each character in your DMV disappears as an unending conveyor belt of Shinra troops whittle you down was just gut wrenching.
As always great video. My suggestion "10 times that videogame companies screwed the pooch" for example nintendo ditching Sony, Sega ruining the saturn's release or the PS3 original launch
Hi Jules maybe a list of ps1 and/or original xbox games that need to be remade for the newest systesm like Legend of Legaia with besides graphics what might need to change to make the game viable in this day in age
Gonna talk about timed missions without brining up XCOM? Just about every mission is a timed mission in that you have a set number of turns to do what you need to do and it makes the game that much more tense and exciting
What made the stealth fight with Mr. Freeze so good is that was built up. For one, even though Victor is one of Batman's nicer villains, he's still a sort of villain who feels like he needs to do evil for his loved ones, so a fight with him was inevitable somehow. And of course it's cause Nora was kidnapped for ransom. Two, Arkham City got you used to stealth beforehand, and the mechanics are solid. Fighting Victor tests your ability to adapt by making him adapt as well.
Gonna wanna go to the craft store and buy some cotton puff balls, and jam a few into the springs on the microphone support. The springs are ringing and creating an echo in the source audio.
Would easily put Blood, Hexxen, TotT, Heroes of might and magic, Commandos and the old Harry Potter games (the ones from EA and portray) back on that list lol
You also got a good tutorial mission with Portal 2 in my opinion. Tutorial missions are meant to get you accustomed to the mechanics of the game, but can be easily drawn out if they go too long with nothing interesting happening. That's something some people did not like about Kingdom Hearts 2. RPGs can be pretty complex, but I think we spent more time in Twilight Town than we wanted to; about an hour before even the title card showed. Portal 2 more simple, so the tutorial is more simple. Like, look up and down, then walk to a painting simple. Its approach to tutorials works because it is hilarious! The exercise being simple, Wheatley's bumbling antics and the announcer's deadpan bad advice suit Aperture Science's absurdist humor quite well. Even redoing the first few levels of Portal 1 is made compelling because it's not just nostalgic setpieces, it's seeing how it changed in the supposed years since you went through them. So basically, in addition to it being engaging, the tutorial to Portal 2 works because it properly sets the tone, and that tone is funny.
I think I have another escort mission done well. In Mass Effect 2, during the Collector Base mission, it's kinda like an escort mission when you send a squad mate into the heating vents. Pt 1, choose the right squad mate. Pt 2, get to the locking mechanisms in time to escort your squad mate further along the vent.
This might be a bit of a hot take, but what about Shenmue fork lift driving? I actually enjoyed it. He was saving up for a ticket to China, so he had to work a menial job day in day out for what seemed like forever. I remember working 2 jobs through out the summer to save up to go inter-railing and it was doom & seemed to take forever. If that's not realism, then I don't know what is...
Kingdoms of amalur also did escort correctly imo. The npc kept correct pacing and wasn’t a wet noodle in combat. Not bad for a game that only did it a few times
mowing lawn, delivering mail, spin a cardboard sign, standing in the sun handling flyers all so you can got back home, sit on your PC, and finally buy that really cool thing that you wanted
I think the problem with most forced stealth sections is that, in the metaphorical sense, they make as if to cast you as the leopard on the hunt... but with mechanics that force you to act more like a gopher watching for hawks. And, at least in a game that's all about the action, it would be a lot more fun if you were allowed to act like that leopard. Stealth shouldn't have to automatically mean that you're the hunted. In nature it's more often an aspect of the hunter. So it should be adjusted to fit into the tone the game is trying to set in the rest of its gameplay, instead of relying on AI and mechanics that were ultimately designed to suit something entirely different.
I just want to say that Jame and Jules are like the New Day of Whatculture. Also, a suggestion I have is: 8 original video game soundtracks that goes hard… EDIT: In the low chance that this gets seen, @Esardee was the first to ask (as far as I know), so all credit goes to them…
yeah sorry, I have no idea how any of guys could stand these stupid mini missions in "no more heroes". And no killing some guys, specially for an emotionless cold chick was clearly not enough motivation. It really feels sometimes like I'm the only person who doesn't like this game.
Man, TimeSplitters really didn't get the exposure it deserved. It gets overshadowed by Goldeneye and Perfect Dark in our memories sometimes but all 3 TimeSplitters games were great in their own right. The story was interesting, the characters were funny, and the multiplayer was so much fun. Rare/Free Radical were truly iconic in their day.
10 games where tool are becoming overpower weapon (like in singularity where the time control brasser is pretty weak at the begin to a overpower weapon that can protect the hero from everything and let him kill with it at no cost)
I feel as though we should take a shot every time Jules gives us advice or lesson at the end of each video. Also how about games where you just wake up all powerful like infamous 2 and I know I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this but also the legend of korra as well as God of war franchise in general.
A more recent, and arguably better, example of real life work being fun in a game is Power Wash Simulator. In fact it's the entire game. It's absurd just how soothing and calming that game was in the recent years blessed by our lord Nurgle.
I have to say that True Crimes: Streets of LA had the worst tailing missions. There was this one where you follow a guy and he went around the same block 3 times before moving on....before he returns back to that same block and repeats. I literally followed the guy for ten minutes before the mission finished. Those missions were poorly done.
For #1, I would argue that .Hack GU did it first, coming out a couple years earlier, where you start of as max level character until your player character data is reset and you go back to level 1. Although maybe nit as much as a free for all, though
I don't hate escort missions, nor time missions, not tutorials... But I admit there are ones more fun and polished than others. I'd add: A Plague Tale (for escort) Unreal 2, the defend the ship, for Hold the line.
What could be fun as a list would be video game missions where the players actions have minimal to no impact on the results. Where the questgiver would get the item they're asking for anyway if you didn't get involved, for example.
You absolutely don't get every force power Starkiller gets later on while playing with Vader since Vader doesn't use Force Lightning, or Lightning Shield but you do get most of them and I think they're upgraded all the way. Vader actually plays a lot different from Starkiller though, since he moves slower and has completely different attack animations but that also just really hammers home how much effort they put into that opening sequence and aside from my nitpick above I 100% agree with Jules here.
Worst escort missions done right would be better. You could then put Shadwen on the list, because it's one giant escort mission like Ico, but at the same time it's a very good stealth game, where your escort won't ever trigger alarms.
Top 10 video games where you can get over powered before the main story line begins. Like fable 1 after leaving the guild you can ignore all missions instantly start grinding and getting over powered weapons.
2010 was a hell of a year on "how to kill your main character" in terms of setting a standard between Halo Reach and Red Dead Redemption. Also, way to make me feel old thinking of how long it has been...
How long has the springs on jules microphone mount resonated into his audio? Is it new or did I only just notice because of the lack of background music?
Speaking of good escort missions, Bioshock Infinite. If there is one thing the game that never was but at the same time kinda exists with a different gameplay style did right, it's Elizabeth Comstock. Or as I like to call her Anna... You'll find out why later... The game tells you to "bring us the girl and wipe away the debt." Because apparently finding a girl in a flying city is enough to pay off your debts. Why? Well, either way, once you find Anna, she starts following you around so she too can escape, and people who play Resident Evil 4 may get nervous about that idea, but Infinite subverts those fears, because there are 2 things Anna cannot do, which makes the game so much better than most escort missions. The first thing she can't do is get lost. You never have to wait for her; she'll just teleport to your position if you get far enough from her or get in an elevator with you. And you'll want her around because she provides you with health, ammo, money, and reality warping powers. Awesome! The second thing she can't do is die in game. She does not have a health bar you need to manage, no matter how chaotic the battlefield gets. Probably because Old Zacky wants her alive. Don't ask me why, it's pretty unsettling. You did it! You cracked the code on how to make escort games not frustrating!
Okay but number 7 gave me PTSD because finishing that on Veteran was literally a nightmare and I'm certain I won't recover from it... I got the achievement though... Maann and then you throw Reach in there too... Now I'm also depressed..
I really wished they would have released a dlc or expansion to The Force Unleashed where you played as Vader for more than one mission, just to drag out the op feeling of that first one
No joke. Today is Sunday, my rest day at the gym. My friend called me last night and asked him to help him get back into fitness with him today. I just got dressed and I’m getting ready to go in. lol Wild.
“Burn rubber like the Flash on date night” is my new favorite phrase 😂
I just got that joke… it’s hilarious
I would love to hear your guys take on 10 times developers used your gamer knowledge against you. You’re all my favorite ledges. ;)
Indeed
I feel like Resident evil 3 remake does this with Nemesis final boss
*8 is the number they use. Not 10.
Finally. Jules, you make my week. I'm moving soon and your positive words always make me feel a lil better
Honorable mention.
Marvel spiderman - the museum mission where your MJ but you get to tell Spider man when to snag the enemy's. That one wasn't bad
Agreed, and the final one, when you finally get a chance yo electrocute the enemies is satisfying
@@alejandropadilla6777 uhhh that is a good one too
I'd like to see a video on games everyone thought would be garbage but turned out to be amazing.
1:18 OOOOOOH MY GOD I JUST GOT BLASED WITH A WAVE OF NOSTALGIA!!
thank you for saying escort missions can be the entire game and can be awesome... That's exactly how I describe A Plague's tale 1 & 2! A giant escort mission that is actually awesome!
Another good example, right to the end is Brothers: A tale of two sons (right till the end) and even - sort of - The Last Of Us...
I recently played Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade from LucasArts and had my childhood destroyed. How about a list of incredible games that should stay in the past?
Hey the fate of Atlantis is 1 lucasarts finest along with I think it was called the “dig”
I'd love to see a list about "Games that became amazing via free patches". No matter if they were fine already at launch, like Stardew Valley adding a local co-op to become the best game for lovers. The list could also be named something snazzy like "Games that put their own review scores to shame".
Good one
Whatculture saying not twittwer for obvious reasons is hilarious considering what the site is built upon...And I like Jules
Now it's time for the reverse.
"Missions that makes you go how did they get it wrong?"
Perfect example Saints Row the Third where you have to destroy Transmitter Antennas in a UFO. On the tin how could you not have fun? But in game play not so much fun.
8 games where choices cost you everything even a potential restart
I absolutely loved the tailing missions in saints row with pierce. The sing alongs are the best
I think I got one for ya Jules. "'X' games in a franchise with a one off mechanic/gameplay element that absolutely should be seen more often."
Outside of Final Fantasy X's amazing story, battle system and Lvling system, was a neat little concept, and no, I'm not talking bout the always fun Blitzball. Hey thanks for another great episode and I had a fun idea for a video for next week’s episode and it’s 10 times you’re force to play a video game within a video game to progress forward
The Dogs Life clips crack me up every time 😂 my sister used to love that game so I remember it quite well 😂
Jules is immortal and it takes less than 2 minutes for him to come back to life after being killed. WOW!
Fenrir is a wolf
The goodest boy
Ico is the best escort mission, but I always thought I was gonna break Yorda poor wrist.
Another good example of the genre shift is the introduction to the Flood in Halo CE.
I would love to see a list about the best soundtracks in games. Might have done that before, in that case could you please do it again?
Yes please, I would love love love this.
Zack's last stand in Crisis Core is another hold the line mission I love. The reality of the situation setting in as each character in your DMV disappears as an unending conveyor belt of Shinra troops whittle you down was just gut wrenching.
A list of games that emulate the feel of a movie better than the game based on it
For all that Bioshock Infinite did wrong, It's easily one of the best escort mission in any video game
How about animations for when you’re character is standing still? That is in all sorts of genres of games
Palatine: Wait you have been flying around for two weeks trying to get a signal. Ugh, you must smell like feet, wrapped in leatherly burnt bacon.
The closing of these videos has made me a lifelong fan. Thank you.
Ahhh, my dose of merriness for the day, directly to my ears.
How about games where you make the map?
And I got one for you. Legend of Mana. One of my favorite PS1 games.
Gonna talk about timed missions without brining up XCOM? Just about every mission is a timed mission in that you have a set number of turns to do what you need to do and it makes the game that much more tense and exciting
All Hail King Jules! Here's a list idea: Top Games that never got DLC or a sequel to close off a cliffhanger ending
Mega Man Legends 2 is a great example, so is Evil Within 2, though hopes are high for a 3rd installment
8 times we WANTED the bad ending because it was more fun/way cooler
Gonna wanna go to the craft store and buy some cotton puff balls, and jam a few into the springs on the microphone support. The springs are ringing and creating an echo in the source audio.
Games that switched genres and rocked it
Metal Gear Solid to Metal Gear Rising Revengance
Forgotten video game franchises that need to return
Would easily put Blood, Hexxen, TotT, Heroes of might and magic, Commandos and the old Harry Potter games (the ones from EA and portray) back on that list lol
You also got a good tutorial mission with Portal 2 in my opinion. when you talked about real life tasks and them fun in video games.. i really expected this would lead up to "Powerwash Simulator" :D
Villains that have been resurrected TOO MANY times!
William Afton
This might be a bit of a hot take, but what about Shenmue fork lift driving? I actually enjoyed it. I need the kazzoo song as my alarm
Or in the remembrance of Jason David Frank, the best power ranger games
I love your support for being bettering themselves!! You rock!
Video games where something was supposed to be sad but instead it was hilarious
Kingdoms of amalur also did escort correctly imo. The npc kept correct pacing and wasn’t a wet noodle in combat. Not bad for a game that only did it a few times
Since @CrisisAmongInfiniteDarthsAC is not here...
Top Ten Bosses Jules can defeat if he was magically sucked into a video game.
Favorite hold the line = Battlefront
8 most unintentionally funny moments in gaming
mowing lawn, delivering mail, spin a cardboard sign, standing in the sun handling flyers
all so you can got back home, sit on your PC, and finally buy that really cool thing that you wanted

Can we have a full video of James?
instead of no more heroes, I was expecting something like power wash simulator
Mile high club is probably one of the reasons why the first modern warfare holds such great memories for me, doesn't hurt that it was my first 100%
I just want to say that Jame and Jules are like the New Day of Whatculture. Also, a suggestion I have is:
8 original video game soundtracks that goes hard…
EDIT: In the low chance that this gets seen, @Esardee was the first to ask (as far as I know), so all credit goes to them…
Top 10 characters Jules could beat in real life. We demand it
Not gonna lie, I vastly preferred the PS2 version of Force Unleased for just how powerful it made you feel.
yeah sorry, I have no idea how any of guys could stand these stupid mini missions in "no more heroes". And no killing some guys, specially for an emotionless cold chick was clearly not enough motivation. It really feels sometimes like I'm the only person who doesn't like this game.

How about 10 Musou-Style Hidden Gem games? (I honestly just want an excuse to talk about Mystic Heroes!)
8 NPCs that were sick or ill and were hilarious…
Example Johnny in MGS4
10 games where tool are becoming overpower weapon (like in singularity where the time control brasser is pretty weak at the begin to a overpower weapon that can protect the hero from everything and let him kill with it at no cost)
List Idea: Games That Didn’t Need Such Detailed Plots. (like the Sonic Riders series)
A plague tale did great with the escort mission
I feel as though we should take a shot every time Jules gives us advice or lesson at the end of each video. Also how about games where you just wake up all powerful like infamous 2 and I know I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this but also the legend of korra as well as God of war franchise in general.

I'd add:
A Plague Tale (for escort)
Unreal 2, the defend the ship, for Hold the line.
What could be fun as a list would be video game missions where the players actions have minimal to no impact on the results. Where the questgiver would get the item they're asking for anyway if you didn't get involved, for example.

How about surprising burtal move's in teen raited games one example, in ultimate Spider-Man if you press square and circle venom can do a backbreaker.
Thank you for listening love you guys see you next video. 👍
Jules looks just like the image of Gordon Freeman from half life. Check out the thumbnail of no clips half life documentary and you'll c it.
How about list of games that should have been a slam dunk but failed anyways
2010 was a hell of a year on "how to kill your main character" in terms of setting a standard between Halo Reach and Red Dead Redemption.
Also, way to make me feel old thinking of how long it has been...
Here's a tricky one: 10 Studios Who've NEVER Made a Bad Game.
Btw if Sucker Punch isn't on the list, you'll never hear the end of it.
How long has the springs on jules microphone mount resonated into his audio? Is it new or did I only just notice because of the lack of background music?
Stumbled upon you today after binge watching gameranx for a couple of weeks and fell in love with you
Speaking of good escort missions, Bioshock Infinite. If there is one thing the game that never was but at the same time kinda exists with a different gameplay style did right, it's Elizabeth Comstock. Or as I like to call her Anna...
My favorite escort mission was the entirety of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. That game was fantastic.
14:01 save for Force Lightning, which Vader cannot cast due to his limbs being prosthetic.
@TextOnTelegrm--WhatCulture1 not today, scammy
"Burn rubber like the Flash on date night" 🤣😂🤣😂
Burnt rubber on the Flash's date night is absolutely beautiful
Okay but number 7 gave me PTSD because finishing that on Veteran was literally a nightmare and I'm certain I won't recover from it... I got the achievement though...
Maann and then you throw Reach in there too... Now I'm also depressed..
Video games where you used the jank/broken mechanic to beat the game
A list of the best Video games and their anime or animated adaptations done right . For example Shenmue, Arcane, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Castlevania
I remember an escort type of mission in Second Sight. Felt like true hell.
I just got dressed and I’m getting ready to go in. lol
Wild.
I’m Photoman89 thank you for picking my idea 🎉🎉🎉
Characters that we always wanted to play then finally got to play as them like Ghost from Cod or Vergil from dmc
