I love that watch brands are trending towards smaller, more refined sizes.

Well a 36 mm dress watch is fine or perfect but not for a dive watch with a thick bezel.👽

It drives me nuts, lol. I have large wrists, and the vast majority of watches I love are too small for me.

@@NCSheriff7To be honest this is just another desk diver. One who wants pure diver will go for Pelagos not for this one. I have large wrist but i tend to like watches that are under 40mm. Each on his own.

They really aren't. Rolex just increased the size of the sub, explorer , Daytona. Name a brand and they have made bigger watches recently. And also smaller ones. But this isn't new. This is what they have always done and always will do to sell more. Go up. Go down, up, down, churn, consumption.

Well...smaller, of course, but I wouldn't say "more refined." At least for Tudor, it's watches are equally refined, regardless of size.

I'm 6.1 and I just bought the Black Bay 54 . It is a verry classy watch that wears extremely well for the suggested 37mm dial . Try it on your wrist first , the charms follow fast . Very happy with my latest purchase .

I’ve got a good friend who bought this watch, his wrists are neither small nor dainty and this watch looks absolutely fantastic on him. I’m 6’3” and over 200 lbs and when I tried it on it still looked great, I’d buy it in a second

I love the 54. I bought it sight unseen and was concerned it'd feel too small on my 6.75" wrist, but it's changed how I feel about watch sizes. It's just so comfortable and wears perfectly. This will sound crazy, but I sold my Rolex Submariner because after wearing the 54, it felt too big and clunky. I replaced it with an Explorer 36.

Wise decisions. I like the pre-ceramic subs... not the latest obese variants. The 54 is essentially a 50s Submariner, so you still have a sub

I just bought this watch today. Kept going back and forth between the bb58 and the bb54. At first I thought a 37 mm on my 6.75 inch wrist would wear too small. I was so wrong …I tried it on my wrist.. then the whole transaction took me less than 20 minutes. I fell in love with the vintage vibe and the modern tech behind the Watch. It reminded me of the original submariner. this is my first Tudor watch. I will definitely wear this with any suit. Thanks for the review.

I initially bought this on the rubber strap and it never really resonated with me but once I swapped to the metal it became a pretty permanent fixture on my wrist. It's a beautiful watch that nails the vintage vibes better than anything else in the Tudor catalogue. And it's a really a Tudor submariner with original vintage dimensions. I don't think they have a better watch in their current catalogue

Its my opinion watch sizes are starting to get back to realistic sizes. Many people will appreciate a Tudor dive watch at this particular size. Very good on Tudor. I've always loved the BlackBay diver range of models but unfortunately been sized out even the 39mm being a bit to big but not anymore! 37mm is perfect for myself and I assume many others. Pure Class! Definitely one of if not my favorite dive watches available!

Just bought this for my daughter who loves my 70’s rolex sub. It channels the vibe of that watch really well. Important to note that there are very few competitors. Breitling has the 38mm super ocean but that is not an inhouse movemment and comes in really modern colors. Tag has the aquaracer and rolex has the 38mm yachtmaster. None look as great as this and all are more expensive. Great buying and daughter loves it

I went with the 54 over the 58, even with a 7.25 in wrist. It’s small on me, yes. But it’s something about the squared-off case shape and vintage vibe that got me. It’s more effortlessly vintage than the 58 with all its gilt accents

That’s good to hear, I’d kinda ruled it out as being too small for my 7in wrist but my main watch is a Reverso duoface (medium) so I guess it can’t wear smaller than that. Shame it’s so hard to try on/see at ADs

I have seen and read many reviews on the BB54. One thing that is never mentioned is that when viewed at a distance the sunburst and guilt on the dial, the watch takes on a warm subtle tropical look. This in my opinion gives this piece added vintage charm.

    Great review and fantastic quality!
I have both the B54 and the BB58. Both are great watches, but I feel that the case proportions, clean bezel insert and the black sunburst dial of the BB54 just makes it look a bit more special and refined. If you deciding between the BB54 and BB58 black, go for the BB54 as they wear very similar on the wrist. On the other hand, if you are looking for a blue diver, the BB58 is unbeatable.

The beauty of the 54 is that it opens up the dive watch to more people who have slimmer wrists and that's a good thing. If I didn't have my 58 I'd certainly give it a look. From a personal perspective I prefer the snowflake running second hand over the lollipop and I prefer the red triangle adding that little pop of colour to the bezel. I guess the nearest readily available smaller dive watch is the Aquis from Oris but without an in house movement or the same spec as the Tudor MT5400.

  • @rabtrekker
    @rabtrekker ปีที่แล้ว +2

The BB54 is my first Tudor and I absolutely love it. This replaced my Certina PH200M (2020) and represented a 10 year work milestone, hence a step up to 'luxury'.
I love almost everything about it, if Tudor insists on omitting 1/2 links, the T-Fit needs to be longer, period. I had to source a 3rd party 1/2 link to optimize fit. This needs addressing and falls short of £3k+ watch standards.
The BB54 is suitable for more occasions than it isn't. My wearing habits returns +0.3 sec/day and I haven't needed to touch the crown since I set it 3 weeks ago. The quality is higher than I've ever owned and the ceramic action of the clasp and bezel is sublime. The 20mm lugs allow for a myriad of style and colour options from my catalogue of compatible straps. I'd rather have one great watch and more strap options than visa versa.
In summary, a stonker of a watch, with quality for lifetime ownership, with a minor fitment gripe.
    Well done Tudor 😊
    Keep the content coming Teddy!

I was fortunate enough to come across one at my local AD and bought it right away. A few reasons.
    1) This is the perfect compliment piece to my Omega SMP 300m which of course is strikingly modern and in a lot of ways “flashy.” The BB54 is an under the radar piece that is extremely refined.
    2) It’s the perfect fit for my smaller wrist.
3)the T fit clasp it fantastic.
    4) vintage submariner looks with modern movement and features imo make it a no brainer proposition.

I prefer this over the BB 58 with the guilded markers and the red triangle. i like the simpler design of this one better and would choose it over the 58, if I was looking for the vintage look of the black/guild color combo. 58 all the way for me. I own it and had a chance to compare both on my wrist (7.04") and 58 has better propotions, and sits ideally on my wrist. 54 is a good looking watch and may be a great option (although I am not a fan of sunray dial here, in person its is highly pronounced) but if someone is on a crossroads I would highly reccomend to try them both, side by side and then decide.

I had to immediately buy myself a Tudor BB 54. My Grandpa wears a Rolex Datejust 36mm and has wrists like a bear. Still i think he pulls it off amazeingly. A 37mm Diver is just perfect for letting me feel that old school vintage vibe from the watch ma Grandpa wears. Its just really special to me! Plus i like to go out and train a lot. So my watch gets thrown around on my wrist a lot. Wouldnt want that to happen on a jubilee, so i think a Tudor Oyster is just amazeing. Although some people took a jubilee on this watch and i think it also looks amazeing.

Tudor is following an old playbook of theirs. They used to offer more Submariner sizes than Rolex: Lady (smallest Sub ever), Mini, Mid-Size (36), and 39/40. (People will correct me if I missed some.) Rolex and Tudor also have a new playbook: Rolex is a modern luxury brand, while Tudor offers both modern and heritage watchers. This is a dramatic difference from only decades ago, when Tudors came in Rolex cases, with Rolex crowns. I am perpetually surprised Tudor continues to take the heritage play as far as feauxtina on the BB Pro and fake rivets on the bracelets. That's some pricey costume jewelry.

I have a 7¼" wrist and have always preferred having a speck of a watch on my wrist due to originally inheriting watches from my brother, Dad and uncle that measured anywhere from 31mm to 37mm. One quartz was 40mm (Reliance brand) and is accurate to within 1 second every 5-6 months or so.
I also have watches up to 44-46mm but I won't go any bigger.

A possible huge advantage for the 54: the quick adjust bracelet allows significant others to join in on the fun!
I had the chance to handle and buy this watch early on. I own the bb58 in black and guild, yet the new watch made a lasting impression. Namely, the additional thinness, simpler bezel, and smaller crown give it a different, more elegant feel. It certainly feels like a time capsule to the past. Ultimately, I passed bc I’m already attached to my BB58 and my experiences in it. Plus, the 58 has a touch of red. If I didn’t already have a black bay 58, the 54 would be perfect for my under 7” wrist.
Teddy, if it were available in more colors, how much cross shopping would you foresee between the bb54 and the bb 36mm?

At essentially the same MSRP as the SJE, the BB54 delivers a great watch on a premium bracelet without Seiko's trademark ambiguity regarding accuracy.

I have the 39mm bb58 and love it. I don’t see the need for a 37mm version. The watch is so beautiful that decreeing it’s size takes away from it’s esthetics. I have a 6-5/8” wrist and the bb58 is perfect.

I’m someone who collects vintage watches (mostly 34-36mm Rolex and Omega) but I’ve moved to a hot, humid place so I can’t really wear them anymore.
So I wanted something modern and I was looking at a BB58 for a while until the BB54 came out and I was smitten.
I was finally able to get one on the secondary market (they are not really available in boutiques) and once I tried it it was love at first sight.
It feels just like my 1601 DJs or Jumbo Omegas, has a similar charm but with all the convenience of a modern watch. The 38mm Baltic dive watch that I bought recently feels really inferior and clumsy in comparison (granted the price is 6x less).

Love the size, I'd be open to this watch if I didn't already have it's larger brother.
However, I feel the gold 'vintage' dial seems to clash with the more modern looking bezel. The bb58 has gold in the bezel which ties in with the dial, the 54 seems to clash a bit for me. Though I've not seen it in person so it might look better in the flesh

Dunno if the BB58 bezel is a 60 click, but the 54 definitely is, and that’s important. I thought I would find a 60 click less useful/accurate when positioning it. In practice though, I find I prefer the 60 click over the more usual 120; it makes me less fussy and more “fuzzy” about timings. Also the bezel “milling” is much smoother on the outside than the BB58. So it feels nicer to me. I decided not to buy a BB58 solely due to the very sharp, rasp-like feel of the bezel. The BB54 solves that, and now it’s been constantly on my wrist for several months. It’s a complete beaut!

I think your view on this changes depending on whether you already have a Tudor. I have a Blackbay 58 and I find this watch appealing but it's not different enough for me to justify having this and the 58. I just want that t-fit clasp on my 58.

I own the Tudor Black Bay 58 blue 39mm as well as the 36mm blue dial. I would love this watch as I have small wrists and this is right in the middle size wise of the two I currently own. It’s now on my radar! Thanks Teddy.

  • @kmartinjr100
    @kmartinjr100 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Why this 54 over the 58: Simple. As one that owned the 58 for two years, it boils down to the fit( via the clasp) the dial( more refined- less gimmicky). I traded the gilt 58 for the 54. The answer comes to you once you try on the 54. Fits perfect for the 6 3/4 wrist. It has even a touch more charm than the 36mm explorer. That’s the answer. Fits perfectly in a way the the beloved 58 didn’t.

  • @shamanprime
    @shamanprime ปีที่แล้ว

Best description I’ve read is that the 58 (gilt version) feels like a new diver designed to mimic the vintage styling, while the 54 feels like an actual vintage diver. Btw when you handle the 54 it feels too small, but when you actually wear it, this goes away.

Love that Tudor is not afraid to take a modern approach on a vintage format. I think many of us would completely swarm a 6538-revival from Rolex but they don't seem to have any interest in "re-issue" type releases. Maybe Tudor is the brand that becomes the vehicle for that sort of thing. I gotta say though the typography on the dial still seems so plain and uninteresting to me. I would've loved to see them use their heritage branding.

Nice review Teddy. If you don't mind a small piece of advice. You're most engaging when speaking directly into the camera and not reading prepared text. I realize that preparing text allows you to be more thorough (a strength) but something is lost in engagement. At the end of this video, we get the sense that you're just thinking aloud, which gets and holds our attention -- a good thing.

I wear the 58 on a nato (Erika's original Connery) as couldn't get the bracelet comfortable and wear the 54 on it's superb bracelet. The 58 is my go to swimming watch. I wear the 54 as a daily beater and I find myself preferring to wear it over my submariner 😯
The only negative is the bracelet is a bit sharp on the outside edges and can irritate the wrist sometimes, I may try to smooth this. The sub is much smoother of course and higher quality, but the 54 has a je ne sais quoi! 😍
Recently I am wondering if I should have got the 41 with the burgundy bezel, but when I originally saw the 54 I was excited by it's size and vintage aesthetic and had to have it even after trying both. I think the smaller size at the time was an easy transition for me as I had recently got a Zenith Defy revival with the 37 mm case. My wrist is 18 cm (7 inches), so usually 39 to 42 is ideal for me.

I'm sure this is a great watch too but I'm very happy with my BB58. The size is perfect for my medium sized wrist & I like the added hash marks and the spot of red on the 58 bezel. This watch does however have the better bracelet with with the on the fly adjustment although I personally don't need that. I wonder if the bracelets can be used interchangeably though?

Unfortunately haven't been able to handle it yet but I tried a 36mm Tudor Sub late last year and LOVED it. Unfortunately they go for even more than the BB54 so it's really tough to justify. I am unsure if I should go for the 54 or wait for a different color or even a Pelagos 37? 🤔 Tudor is really one of the most exciting brands in the last couple years and their watches aren't even that crazy. Many brands could've outdone them, but just didn't.

I'm surprised that one of the cons you mentioned for the 54 was the crown. I can't think of a worse crown that the one on the 58 or the 41mm black bays. They are simply horrible. The grooves are super fine and makes for a slippery purchase. I would think that the crown on the 54, with the coarser grooves, would improve the grip on the crown.

I asked for this watch. It's perfect so I got it. If you look around on TH-cam, you'll notice more and more Videos of different people saying "I finally found the Tudor for me". W&W, Watch Crunch, Watch Idiot...Tudor is making enough different watches to suit what people want. Ok, maybe not Omega level of choice but loving their approach...more importantly for me, what I didn't like about the BB58 (owned) was fixed with the 54. Non-gilt bezel (yay), thinner, smaller, T-Fit...amazing. It's a non-tool, tool watch. It can do everything the other's can do, just a bit smaller.
