    Out of all the reviews, this is by far the best. Awesome work capturing the nuances of the 54.

    I love traditional, old school, smaller watch sizes. Much comfortable to wear and much classy. With a "nothing to prove" attitude. Cool .. !

    My favorite watch of the past 5 years. It’s so hard to find a small dive watch and this one kills. I love Zach going into these in depth reviews, more of this please!

    This is, by far, the best BB54 review I've seen on YT. And I've watched nearly all of them as I own both the black BB58 and blue BB58 and was considering buying the BB54. This video convinced me it's worth the leap and I have a BB54 on the way. If it turns out the way I expect the BB58's will be sold and the BB54 will become my primary dive watch. I like smaller vintage style watches so this is right up my alley.

    Zach, this is the best review of the BB54 I've seen. Very comprehensive. As a BB58 owner, I appreciate what Tudor has done with the 54. However, I love the red triangle and will never sell my 58. Cheers!

      I love the gilt dial, the distinctive coin edge large crown (reminds me of a Rolex Big Crown), and the Snow flake seconds hand. All these wonderful characteristics have been watered down in the 54.

    54 looks better to me than the 58 in person. You need to see them in person.

      I’ve tried both at the AD a couple of times now and I 100% agree with this sentiment. Its elements feel more consideredly designed to my eyes. Oh and the thiness makes it feel sublime to wear in a similar way to a 5 digit Datejust reference.

    I own both. My wrist is 6.5”. The 54 wears amazingly, but it doesn’t really say “diver” in its presence. It actually reminds me of an Explorer 36mm (that’s to say, a smallish and elegant tool watch) I also love that it is a more true homage to the subbies of yore. So when I want to have a diver on wrist, 58. When I want vintage styled tool watch (that happens to have a dive bezel) it’s the 54.

    I have 7.25” wrists. A 58 looks a little small on me, perhaps, but I love it. I will definitely get a 54 as well. I love the vintage vibes.

    This is the most comprehensive BB54 review out of all - I've seen many - and I also like that at the end you made a clear conclusion supported by logical facts. Everyone else just says if you like smaller, take the 54 if you prefer larger take the 58. Thanks:D But as someone who can't really decide between the two, after this video I'm convinced.

  • @anthonystevens8683
    @anthonystevens8683 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    A great comparison video Zach. I've yet to see the BB54 in real life but from what I have seen I'm quite impressed by it. I have the BB58 and find it interesting that the BB54 is not just a reduced version of that watch. There are some things that I prefer on the BB58 though, that little red splash of colour around the lume pip and the snowflake seconds hand. I think I do prefer the non guilt bezel markings but might miss the minute index markings but this is true to the watch that the 54 is paying homage to so not a big deal. At some point I'll visit an AD and have a look, probably to see if it's different enough to live along side my 58. Currently I'm not sure that they are different enough but we shall see. The Pelagos 39 is a watch that could live along side the 58 though as it's different enough, that mild sunburst dial and bezel, flat crystal and full modern tool watch look being all brushed titanium with the T-Fit clasp. For now I have no intention of selling my 58.

  • @RedwoodAggie
    @RedwoodAggie ปีที่แล้ว +8

    "Welcome to my brain." 😂I think you're the first person to really reasonably explain why the BB54 doesn't wear as small as it should on paper. Unfortunately I still feel it's too small for me, but I'm kind of on the above average side of wrist size and an edge case on height. You brought up some interesting points about where the BB58 fits into the lineup. I personally am not tired of the Tudor Black Bay divers with gilt, but the gilt matching on the bezel of the BB58 works best in my mind, even if it's not true to the original (I think). Maybe it's the fact that Tudor matches the lume up so well and the overall look is so well done. My AD rep said the 39mm watches are definitely Tudor's bread & butter, so maybe that's why they have so many watches in that size. 🤷‍♂ I do wonder IF they refresh the 58 or just change it up altogether for a different model. Snowflake markers might overlap the P39 a bit. Of course, if they did those markers on a refreshed blue 58 I'd be all over that. I'd love blue in a P39 as well. Tudor just needs to give us one of them and it's my next big watch purchase. Thanks for the great video!

    With the 54 bringing the crown in and slimming that big slab of steel on the side of the case fixed all the issues I had with the 58.❤

  • @jonskeggi6132
    @jonskeggi6132 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I really like the more square-ish proportions of the 54, I'm hoping for a revamp of the 58 with all the new improvements at the 39mm size.

  • @michaelriera6277
    @michaelriera6277 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The 58 in black/gilt is so dynamic and pleasing to look at and wear. There is a warm charm to the 58 coming fromh the gilt bezel. It has a nice pop of color from the red Triangle that is also found on the Rolex Big Crown. The 58 design borrows cues from Rolex/Tudors of past without being an exact replica. Also, at 39mm it sits comfortably on most wrists. A lot of that charm is lost with the 54.

    • @jicalzad
      @jicalzad ปีที่แล้ว +1

      although i agree, some people prefer a more subtle/subdued look. To me, i would prefer the 54 mainly for the clasp.

    • @stevem3556
      @stevem3556 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought so too on paper and photos. But, I went and tried both on and found the 54 is noticeably slimmer and compact (in a better way). And the absence of the red triangle and 15 min track bezel gave it a much cleaner look. I do wish they kept the big crown of the 58, but to each their own.

    Great review ! Been wearing the BB54 since the past six weeks. I have very small wrists and this watch is just perfect. Could never find a diver watch that fit me well including the Sub. If they did fit well, the quality or design felt off. The BB54 just nails it. The smaller crown is even better and unobtrusive. The faux rivets don’t bother me at all, honestly, I dont even know they are there. The whimsical contrast of the gilt dial, and silver bezel markers are fun, pretty much like the whimsical design language of a bygone era. Only two things for improvement:
    1) half link
    2) better lume
    Overall, well done Tudor !

  • @UnseenHero
    @UnseenHero ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Thanks for the extensive comparison to the 58! I would want to see the 54 in person as I really like thin watches. I agree that I'd like to see a model without the gilt on the dial. I'm pretty sure over the next two years we'll get more color ways as well as all Black Bay models getting the T fit clasp. Now to wait for the 5 link bracelet to make its way to these watches

    I still prefer the 58 with the wider hands, red triangle, thinner bezel line weights, and overall better case/lug dimension balance. But it would be nice to have a new 58 with the same dial treatment as the 54 (looks like a subtle black sunburst) and the updated bracelet with t-fit clasp. When that happens, I’m finally buying a BB58.

    • @michaelriera6277
      @michaelriera6277 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes and the 54 wears very nice. However, aesthetically I preferred the 58. Love the gilted bezel, red triangle ( Rolex Big Crown), the unique snow flake hands second, and the large coined edge crown that matched the coin edge bezel. It’s the sum of the these characteristics that make an otherwise boring watch special.

    That's! I really liked your "semi coherent rambling" because they made a lot of sense to me, and particularly because I have a recently bought BB58, which I am considering selling or exchanging for a BB54. I have tried on the BB54 and I like how it sits on the wrist. But I should also mention that I have started paying attention to the BB54 AFTER I picked up the Rolex Explorer 127240, which is a 36mm watch. I just can't getnover that size and that's what makes the BB54 so alluring. Thanks again for an excellent review!

    I have tried on the 54 recently and it wore very well. Given the similarities beteween the two, that you pointed out, I am wondering why Tudor released the 54 in the exact same colorway than the 58. You could do a dark green-ish bezel or something that isn't offered anywhere else in the catalogue to differentiate.

    The 54 is a gorgeous watch. But it is too small for my wrist. I have a 7” wrist and it just looks silly. Would it have looked silly in 1954? No. There was no other option. I own a 41mm Black Bay, GMT, and Chrono and that size is PERFECT for me. While I can appreciate how smaller wrists can appreciate the smaller sizes and I think that design and construction is superb, I am glad Tudor still makes larger pieces as well. The 54 shouldn’t be looked at as better or worse than the 41 or the 58, it should be looked at as Tudor listening and providing for a wider audience. There will never be a perfect watch (but Tudor is getting close). Wear what you love!

    • @gamesgeargadgets
      @gamesgeargadgets ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guarantee it doesn’t look silly on your wrist. A 7” wrist is a normal wrist, it’s not a giant wrist. A 37mm watch will merely look more svelte or classier.

    • @Goldendoodle.178
      @Goldendoodle.178 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree with you that the 54 is nice but not on a 7 inch wrist. As a Tudor GMT owner I love all of the things about it that others hate. I’ve tried to wear 39mm watches and they just don’t work for me. Love 40mm and slightly above. The Tudor GMT hype has died down but it’s a future classic. I haven’t taken it off since acquiring it two weeks ago, it’s that good and has replaced my Sub as a daily wearer.

    I own the 54. The way I describe the difference is the 58 feels more bulbous. Has a thinner bezel with coin knurling, and the lugs seem way bigger. The 54 feels more flat with more aggressive and thick knurling. The proportions of the 54 are far superior IMO.

    I'm disinterested in the gilt dials. I wanted a BB41(no bezel) identical to the old one except for the new clasp and the in house movement with a long power reserve. Instead we now have a shiny black dial with gilt accents and a jubilee bracelet. Great to have the option but we lost the closest option to an Explorer (at least a modern one).

    When I tried a 54 on I was surprised it didn't feel much smaller than a 58. It is much thinner but it felt boxy to me and the ratio of the dial to the bezel felt off to me vs the 58.

    It’s a nice watch but it’s tiny. I prefer the OG 58 overall anyway, and even that is on the modest side in terms of sizing.

    Great review!
    One question: are the markers really rose gold? I always though they were brass as the hands

    This is a really good review and comparison of two watches I am very interested in. I have to say, Zach, this is one of your best presentations. I watch a lot of your stuff at W&W, and usually you seem a bit stiff and scripted. On this review you seem much more natural and conversational, and your personality comes through. Maybe you're just getting more use to being in front of the camera. All in all, excellent content.

    I like both I really wish the 54 had a larger crown. My sausage fingers love the corn on my bb36 and hate setting my dj. This one feels more like setting the dj

    The "leaks" from last week seem to say this is more literally correct than anyone thought.

    I love the balck bay 58 and 54 but they would look even better with the rose logo on the dial. It's such a cool nod to past Tudor models.

      The rose is on the crown now while back in the days on the crown was a crown ;)

      @lomadonkey that's true hahaha but it would still looks great on the dial like the older black bay 41 models

      You can find 36mm Tudor Submariners for reasonable prices. And Longines Legend Divers, too.

    58 is for the people who can’t buy the Rolex Submariner, 54 is for the people who like vintage style watch.

    The depth of your review is fantastic. I'm sold on the 54 - I like the proportion and it feels dressier because it appears more understated while also having that vintage look.

    I love this new size, but Tudor needs to get more creative with these smaller watches. The standard BB58 (and the 54) are fine, but too simple/boring. I love my SnG Black Bay GMT, but really wish they do something like that at these smaller sizes. Browns, red, two tone, etc.

    Prefer a Longines Ultra-Chron. Better hi-beat movement, more accurate, nicer outside box, better materials as well as fit and finish.
