I have to say, I've had your dry brushes since Adepticon and while I didn't get to sit down with you for a demo, these videos really help us figure out all the fun ways to use these amazing dry brushes (anyone who says make up brushes are just as good has never used an Artis Opus dry brush, just sayin) I love my set, now I just need to get my texture pallet and i'll be set lol

    Before watching you go, I was thinking that drybrushing is some nice technique for a dusty finish for machines, robots, terrain. You have shown me myriads of other applications, most of which are leading to better results in shorter time than the “normal” techniques.

      @@ArtisOpus Exactly that - classic Martyred Lady is difficult enough and cool (and matches my interest, lol). Order of the Sacred Rose (with white + red) would be even slightly more challenging (as it's relatively easy to remove the red from the black, but removing the red from the white is a whole different story). But, being 100% honest, techniques and approach (order of operation) are the important part. Colours can be easily replaced.

    Little late to this video, excellent work as always Byron.

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey buddy, pretty sure I can help you out here, it's quite simple, pick the colour you want, then go a little lighter (as the wash will darken and deepen it a little), I'd ust terradon turquoise made into a wash or something.
      Our recent dragon video may make good additional watching, you'd be using that technique, but over colours instead of black and white.
      Make sure you thin your washes enough, the turquoise ones are strong, unless you're using aethermatic blue.

      Hey dude, of course!
      #1 - You can always strip it, and start again - remember this!
      #2 - Make a plan - pick a reference, an image, a tutorial, etc
      #3 - Keep it simple, but don't be afraid to try one new technique per mode
      #4 - If you are trying a new technique *try it fully!* copy it exactly from your reference, don't change, use the same products where possible, etc. It gives you the best chances of a successful first attempt.
      #5 - HAVE FUN! Remember that learning from mistakes is the BEST BIT (seriously, it's where you learn the most for next time)!
      That's it :)

    Question its a common saying among most painters that you DO NOT use your expensive sable hair brushes to paint with metal paints.
    Doing that is a surefire way to ruin your brushes.
    So most people just use cheap synthetic brushes for that.
    My question is do your drybrush brushes work well with metalics or will they be just as quickly ruined as most brushes will with metallic?

    • @ArtisOpus
      @ArtisOpus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm actually going to disagree with your sources on the first one, it's not a black and white discussion, and with due care you can actually use sables for metallics (they are the best brushes, they give the best results).
      They are heavier in terms of wear, but so are base paints, washes, inks, contrast, heavy coverage formations, high matte mediums, and high pigment loads (everything that isn't a traditional 'layer').
      The approach I take is to 'retire' my sables a little earlier than normal, and use them for these heavier tasks, not when they're 3 years old and way-past usable, but while they've still got life in them. I continue to clean, and care for them, and they last a surprisingly long time.
      Sable is the most durable, as well as the highest quality, it's one of the traits that allows such a high raw material cost.
      What damages brushes is the capillary action of your water taking the pigment towards the metal ferrule, this isn't necessary in drybrushing (we dampen, not saturate!). So it's not nearly the worry it is with normal painting, you won't ever catch me soaking my brushes, apart from a deep clean every 3-6months, and even then I take real care to clean the brushes damp, rather than wet, as much as possible, before soaking for the final clean.
      Numerous brushes used on this channel are years old, and have had a heavy life, metallics and not.
      You do still have to worry about contamination though, that's the main reason for keeping drybrushes separate :) Any questions let us know!

      Hey dude, I don't! I just prime, and go again! Sometimes before painting I'll quickly wipe it with a damp microfiber cloth (to remove dust) but otherwise cleaning isn't necessary - just like a traditional artist's palette :)

      @@ArtisOpus good to know! I just picked up one of the small ones but haven’t used it yet. Do you think the priming is needed?

    Why buy a model this pricey and then half ass it with a 15min drybrush+wash? Dont get this mindset. Still cool technique there.

      Completely disagree here, dude
      1.) How is this half-assed? The technique we used, we did to a very high standard, it happens to be quick (wet blending, and stippling tend to be) but it's a good one!
      2.) You could take it further, and just use this as a fancy basecoat- it's just a technique
      3.) Even using this style of technique you're still going to spend 1hour on the wings alone, before doing metal bits, etc - mini probably sits at 5hours total (I guess) including this, it's not crazy quick
      4.) It's a perfect part for demonstrating this technique, this channel is primarily here to help people learn, and this is a brilliant technique for those intimidated by this type of mini!
      I'm more concerned with getting people to push themselves more, and pick up a big model, and do something they surprise themselves with, and are proud of, that's an important part of why we do the channel.
      I do get your points though, we're going to be tackling a LOC on the channel at some point, first we're covering each aspect with a tutorial, then we'll tie it all together - here we may bring out some more fancy painting :)
      What would you add to this model, as the next steps?
