      @UCB4w8Vl5ZIScSFyxEeZF_JA A ball mill is a shaker that uses steel balls to remove rust and scale. I think you must mean some other kind of a milling tool, but I don't know which.

    Nice video. Always good to see people doing it the right way.
    A small trick: A piece of duct tape will protect the surrounding area from the sparks, eliminating the need for polishing, in case of a surface tolerance.
    I had to polish a part for the food industry, after fixing a broken tap. It took forever, due to very fine surface tolerances.

    When we break taps on the machine we usually drill them out with carbide GO drills or carbide spade drills. It works almost every time. Always good to have the EDM as a backup though.

    • @Numnutz
      @Numnutz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      was just about to say this, since we mostly use high speed steel taps, we can just drill them out with the same carbide drill that we used for the pilot hole, clean it up and just use the next tap, or, since most of our work is done on cnc mills, in some special cases we mill the thread

    Surface is damaged a little, and has caverns. If it's a sealing surface for a hydraulic flange - there can be a leaking. It can be remachined by cutting off around a mm from radial surface, but not every part allow to do that.

    As a Diemaker I've tapped thousands of holes. Never broke any taps. Not! EDM is the only way to go. Carbide drills and shattering taps with a punch are wives tales. If a tap breaks off, it's in the hole to stay. Excessive torque broke it off, and intermittent cutting a broken one will almost always destroy a carbide drill bit. Punching it out destroys the threads in the hole.

      I was trying to figure out what the part is. Looks like a large cylinder liner apart from those horizontal bore marks. Shame he didn't tell us. But if its high carbon steel and the tap is itself carbide then the mill won't work of course. Also there's the danger the tap will move and smash your end mill, possibly damaging the part. I reckon they went for the safest option here.

    Just bought one. I got sick and tired of drilling out work hardened exhaust manifold bolts…then the drill bit snaps off. There’s a kit for limited clearance you can attach as well that’s shorter than a 90° drill as well. If it saves my ass at least twice I’ll have gotten my monies worth out of it. Then there’s hex electrodes as well so you can use an Allen wrench instead of snapping off easy outs as well. I’ll give it a try. If it works,cool. If not…I’ve wasted more money on booze and women than that.
