Dude, your boxing videos are so on point and helpful. Rhythm is super useful, but doesn't aways mean bouncing back and fourth. It is used to be evasive and also set the other guy up. I hope you continue to put out videos because you have a very clear way of explaining things and have definitely helped me.

I found that shadowboxing was the best way to master this rhythm. It took a while of practicing the footwork by itself until that was second nature, then learning it with the jab until I was able to jab with different timings without losing the rhythm. After that you practice that with everything, punches, slips, etc. Then I started doing that with the heavy bag and the double end bag so that now its muscle memory and I can just walk around but still able to move fast and change direction or throw shots with a rhythm when needed.

As I learned more and more about boxing I began to appreciate Ali even more. He would set his feet, faint or throw a combo, and then take this huge skip and step and on the second skip, he would throw his jab mid air as he's circling to his left. I've tried it and it's the most awkward thing I've ever done. His footwork was impeccable and it's really crazy that he was a heavyweight moving like that.

I like what you mentioned about mixing it up. Was training today and I got timed . I could not find my rhythm. I am new to boxing so, it is expected I guess. But I realize how the shadow boxing will help if done consistently. Will help with incorporating head movement, in and out, and my angles in addition to footwork. Thanks coach for the info in the video.

Love your videos, coach. Don't stop making content. I would really like to see a video about posting, especially while utilizing the long guard. I'm trying to evolve from living in the high guard, but I'm only 5'5, so my coach tells me it's not conducive to utilize the long guard. I'm really tired of hearing him say that. I want to become efficient at the long guard. I have 66 inches of reach. I know the long guard can be effective for me. I just really want to focus on posting with my lead hand and how to work off that post. I guess it's time to find another coach who can teach me that. The high guard just isn't all it's cracked up to be, unfortunately.

Old timer here. Some of the best guys to learn rhythm from is a younger Marvin Hagler. Watch videos of him in the early 80 s. Hagler had what I’d call a “juke and jive” rhythm. He moved his shoulders and upper back as if he was adjusting his coat without using his hands. That rhythm enabled him to land punches from different angles. Another great with subtle but great rhythm was Wilfred Benitez. He too moved his shoulders like he was adjusting his coat. Benitez didn’t lift his feet off the canvas but had bounce in his knees. Hagler moved around his opponent a little bit more than Benitez.
Learn rhythm if you’re going to box and practice it in front of the mirror over and over again. Don’t be predictable. Though people would laugh at me because I couldn’t dance but people used to say I moved in the ring like a black fighter. That was a compliment.
