- Day 2 of the Great Vallejo Race, starting in Vallejo and headed back to Richmond. A strong flood current was pushing us back from the starting line with light wind coming across our beam, perfect for a spinnaker start.
Our plan was to hoist right after the start so we could stay maneuverable heading into the start and be close to the line on time. Most of the fleet decided to hang back and get their kites up with plenty of room to spare. So we wound up having the line to ourselves and didn't need much room to maneuver, while Salty Hotel (green spinnaker) had the speed to sail right over the top of us. Wile E. Coyote played it best by keeping their headsail down and hoisting right on the line on time. Live and learn!
From there, every puff counted and it was a game of playing the currents. Hanging close to the shore for relief from the opposing current was a winning move, but we were too late to join the parade and hung in the middle with Salty Hotel, eventually pulling ahead. Everyone got re-shuffled as the wind and currents completely shifted when the river met the bay a few minutes later.
Loving your videos, I'm about to be an E27 owner what advice might you have? I've already learned a lot used to watch those same boats race 15 years ago when I lived in the Bay.
