Spinnaker reaching start - Express 27 fleet - Great Vallejo Race 2024 Day 2
มุมมอง 9498 หลายเดือนก่อน
Day 2 of the Great Vallejo Race, starting in Vallejo and headed back to Richmond. A strong flood current was pushing us back from the starting line with light wind coming across our beam, perfect for a spinnaker start. Our plan was to hoist right after the start so we could stay maneuverable heading into the start and be close to the line on time. Most of the fleet decided to hang back and get ...
Express 27 one-design fleet start - Great Vallejo Race 2024
มุมมอง 1.1K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Gusty stormy rainy conditions for the start on the Berkeley Circle had the fleet split between jibs and genoas. Genoas ultimately prevailed once things settled down but we had a bit of trouble tacking ours at the windward mark and lost a place right away. Proof that a good start matters even in a long distance race: 4 hours later, the six boats in our fleet crossed the line in exactly the same ...
Jibing into the Napa River - Great Vallejo Race 2024 on board Express 27 "glitch"

Gotta hang a left just before the Carquinez Bridge. Wind and waves were building behind us all the way across San Pablo Bay as the rain finally cleared up. We were flying at about 10-12kts down each wave as they stacked up high against the 2kts of current.
Beer can racing near miss, exciting port/starboard crossing - Berkeley Friday Night April 19th, 2024
มุมมอง 15K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Very close call in a friendly Friday night race! The driver of the Olson 25 later said he didn't see us at all until we hailed "starboard," which probably spooked him into making a poorly considered crash tack that almost brought both our rigs down. But no contact, no problem! Another exciting night in the Berkeley Circle.

Sometimes you don't know how it's going to go until you just go for it. Not our most elegant maneuver but I was just relieved to see the mast and boom in tact on the other side. I think we hit our top boat speed right after this, somewhere around 14.5kts.

Rounding Southeast Farallon Island in 25kt of wind and some gnarly seas. We're reefed down and have our smallest #4 jib up and still flying at 12kts through the water. Excellent sailing conditions! Getting back home was much more of a slog. The boat is a 1982 Express 27 hull #2 named “glitch”

Friday night beer can race in Berkeley. Rainy and windy, getting dark. Coming in at 10 kts reaching with the spinnaker. Winding between the breakwater rocks. First boat across the line. A gust and a shift and then... with everyone at the yacht club bar watching, a perfect time to crash!

All the space and time to avoid each other and you still almost hit each other. Personally, whether I am give way or stand on vessel I always take responsibility to maintain separation so that I don't get into those situations. There is a simple rule to figure out if you are on a collision course with another vessel -- if the relative bearing isn't changing and you maintain course and speed and the other vessel maintains course and speed you will hit each other. If you are still quite far away you just want to alter your course a bit so that the relative bearing starts changing.

Glitch did well to avoid a collision, the other boat tacked too close and dead ahead of her. And then messed up the tack, but that is a secondary. If I were helming Glitch I would probably have tried to get above the other boat given both were so close and the other not above Glitch (see 0:30) and dead in the water after the tack.

You will find it much easier to gybe in heavy air if you are surfing fast down a wave. The faster you are going the less pressure there is in the sails.

To avoid broaching out of the gybe (which you did, though the recovery was quick),the boom needs to cross earlier and the boat needs to exit the gybe at a much deeper angle. At the point where the boom starts crossing in the video you're already too high on the new gybe and it's inevitable that the boat will broach. A few ideas: 1. The mainsheet needs to come in much more at the start of the gybe. This will make the boom come across at a deeper angle. Just be ready to dump the sheet out as soon as the boom crosses. I'd imagine the load is such that the sheet needs to be taken in through the blocks instead of by pulling the entire mainsheet system across. 2. The gybe was timed a bit late on the wave. It looks like you caught a wave and reached the best speed on that wave at around 0:11. That would have been the best spot to toss the boom across. 3. Use less rudder to bear away and more rudder to stop the turn. You want to keep the rate of rotation down, especially at the moment where the boom starts crossing. 4.A well executed gybe in big breeze should only be a 30deg turn maximum. If done well you can avoid the broach with a big pull on the tiller (to bear off on the new gybe) right as (or even just before) the boom starts crossing. Basically you want some rotational inertia turning back downwind to counter that of the boom and mainsail. I'd consider having the crew be the one to pull the mainsheet in and get the boom across in heavy air. That way the skipper can focus on driving and exiting the gybe with the mast pointed up. The jib can be presheeted.

    • @yangyang3175
      @yangyang3175 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

regarding 1 ) I was taught the standard process to jibe is to pull in mainsheet all the way to center the boom first, and only when wind is very light (< 15, so relative apparent wind is < 10 ), can you directly pull over the boom. But in that heavy wind (30true, 20 relative wind), I found it way too hard to pull in the main sheet, and even if you could pull it in , the time staying in a sheeted in mail causes heavier pressure on the main and forces the boat to round up. so it's very difficult either way. this is especially difficult on a bigger boat. they managed to pull over the boom on a 27ft.
