The JD800 has the best sounding pads of any machine for me, and that VST sounds awesome.. I can't tell the difference. But I just hate the idea of "subscribing to VST's", I really hate this cloud trend of not really owning anything
I also wish that the VST just were "mine" as well, but it is a low price anyway :-) Just be sure to bounce your audio after every finnished project.. just in case :-)
You can purchase a full license. Also, after you have subscribed for a while they give you two free instruments. I bagged the System 8 and Jupiter 8. 300 dollars of software after subscribing for a year or so.
As mentioned, there is a perpetual license available for purchase, which is a big difference if you look at most other cloud offers where you have no choice or where certain products are only available as subscription. Personally, I am very hesitant when it comes to subscriptions, but if you compare Roland Cloud with other offers (except East West), the value is fantastic. Vendors like iZotope or Accusonus have nearly the same monthly asking price for just a hand full of plugins, which are hardly regularly expanded so far. Roland on the other hand is constantly rolling out new sounds, samples and instruments - so a lot of bang for the buck.
@Жан Клон Yes, but were were referring to the purchase option (which is 149 USD per plugin) or to the different subscriptions, where there are a different number of instruments included during the subscription period based on the plan (pro or ultimate). Indeed, the Loyalty program has ended - but it was always only for those who have had a subscription for at least 12 months.
it feels like the Cloud Version doesn't have as much high-frequencies? it feels like the filter is closed more on some of the presets. The presets on the original seem to almost have a smiley-curve. Nothing you can't EQ and make it even more identical :)
yeah, I own the original JD990 and it’s different, but since getting the plugin it still collects dust now. the OG has a bit more presence and it sounds noticeably more 3D to my ears, but I chalk it up to extra saturation from the output stage and my preamp, as well as more discrepancies between the L/R channels due to the inherent imperfection of analog output/input. nothing I can’t replicate in the mix though and not enough for me to deal with the hassle of latency and all that in a busy project. slap a good saturator on the plugin and a channel strip emulation and it’s close enough.

For example, you're not playing only for "a mix', you're also a musician who needs to be inspired by his instruments... And VST are not inspiring, there is a big difference here with the true machine (and I'm very sad for people that can't hear it...). The same, when I'm playing music, I'm not always playing "for a mix", I'm playing because I love music in the first place, and i need the instrument to the best possible. So the "in a mix you can't tell the difference" is, for me, just a kind of running joke. It is not serious. VST are still not at the level to be played like real instruments, that's the point. One day, perhaps, it will come...like the prince in the Disney song... I think we must tell the truth, VST are still not good enough to be considered as true instruments. They can be used, they can be even loved for their sound signature, they can also fool people "in a mix", but as a musician it is too poor. They are missing the vibrancy you need to express yourself and be inspired. And specifically, Roland has taken the wrong road becoming a software only company trying to simulate what they did in the past. New machines are made by Studio Electronics (the SE-09) or Malekko (system 500). They lost their soul. We must tell them, in each review. Because it is so sad to see Roland becoming a kind of Arturia when you know all the good machines they created in past. They were a legend, and they are now the shadow of a legend, sad.
The real JD800 somehow seems to have more "presence" - it's hard to define. What a missed opportunity the cloud version seems to be - no expansion cards, no loading of sysex from a real JD ... The Strings card/waves set remains a bit of a holy grail for many JD800 owners. If they had built it in, it might have made the cloud version a more likely purchase for me. And there is no replacing the sheer simplicity of the interface of the real JD800 - one slider = one function! It's still an utter joy to program. I was building new pad sounds only the other day and, after 20-odd years the beast can still surprise! I expect most purchasers will do so just t get the presets but this thing does so much more.
Let’s hope Roland will release all the “cards” and that sysex will be added to 😃😃😃 It’s nice if you can use the plug-in as an editor at the same time 😃😃

Was your DAW at 44.1 sampling rate, we did a similar shootout and at 96K it's indistinguishable, I'm not try to start a sampling rate flame war, but some synths just work better at higher sampling rates, the difference is a bit of the timing of the software synth putting the multiple sounds together. At 44.1 the secondary sounds like in the fantasy preset bell are just a few milliseconds behind compared to the original. But once we moved up to 96k we no longer could tell the difference. In a mix no one would be able to tell the difference between the hardware or the plugin so really it doesn't matter just make great music with what you have. Roland did a fantastic job on this plugin and your playing is just beyond talented!! Thanks for the video.
Well the idea behind the jd 800 was to have a digital synth with the user interface like an analog synth. Most digital synths at that time had a display and like 2 faders to program sounds... And now : it's the other way around. With a vst you have the mouse and a computer keyboard (and maybe some controllers). Surely it's nice to have that sounds in a inexpensive way but I always would prefer the hardware... That is where the real fun is.

Once you've recorded either of them and they've been mixed onto a production there won't be a way to tell what was used. It would have been nice if it had all the 990 stuff and all sounds bundled as well as sysex support but as is it's a great replacement for my original JD800
I bet roland will have a jd-990 on the cloud. just a matter of time. while i find that unit to be overrated, many people think of it as a holy grail. i bought one in like 2011 for 300 bucks and now theyre going for over 1500. RIDICULOUS!
First of all....awesome comparison! question...do you think the velocity sensitivity, range, or curve is different in the software/Kronos vs the real hardware? It seems that the hardware gives more consistent and direct sounds due to consistent possibly slightly stronger velocity when the sounds are triggered. I often wonder if that's the issue with a lot of soft syths....it seems they are way more sensitive to velocity and often are on the softer end (maybe it's the midi controllers) vs hardware which makes me almost always prefer the hardware.

The KORG is more “quick responsive” and of course my original JD800 have been on the road and been used a lot.. so that might have something to do with it as well :)
In this comparison, the software seems to be quite a bit more filtered, losing some treble and some volume. I can even hear it through the tiny, crappy speakers of my iPad. It almost sounds like if you had some EQ dialed in. Is it some velocity curve mapped to the filter? In any way, thank you for this video!
There might be a slightly difference between the volum here, and the velocity on my Original is a bit “strange” on some keys.. so I believe that will make some difference. But by the end of the day it is not possible to pinpoint software usage in a full mix I believe :) Anyway… just love the VST in the way that I can have as many JD 800 I like 😃😃
Wow, great comparison!! Subscribed!! I sold my JD-800 years ago and am still kicking myself, even though I own a JD-990 now. I just let one go I found for a decent, but still absurdly high price compared to what I paid for mine back in the day - thinking that money was better put toward a Jupiter-X. Now I don't feel so bad I didn't buy that JD-800 :) (but I still miss it!)

I like the comparsion. But one thing is very sad, there is no sysex option to get the 3rd party sounds into the vst. That is actually a no use argument for me. I´ve got many sounds that i used live and it would be fantastic if i didn´t need to carry the jd to the live gigs anymore and using instead the vst. Any solving options for sysex at the horizion!?
Hi, have they also included the possibility to import custom sound banks in sysex format? As you know there are many banks of the JD-800 and JD-990 in sysex format, it would be very nice to be able to use them also in the vst. Thanks

@@santycolangelo2196 The Roland Cloud D-50 can import sysex patches. Korg's M1 & Wavestation software can imporant sysex patches, but their Triton can't, unless sysex was added to the Triton Extreme VST, which I'm not sure.
The software often sounds with a different spatiality, hardware is more "in front of the face" and also with richer and deeper bass sounds compared to the software. A question: Roland cloud software works as a stand alone software or do they need other software working together (as DAW or a Roland software support).
Aside from the attack difference you noticed, the only appreciable differences I noticed was in that slow bell pad and maybe one other. And yeah, maybe if you sent a MIDI signal from one keyboard to all of them, maybe they’d sound closer. A lot of people seem to hate on Roland Cloud, but personally, I’ve been amazed at how the instruments sound! I just renewed my subscription for my second year last month. They really added a lot of content and updates this past year, not to mention addressed two minor issues I contacted support about relatively quickly. EDIT: I just wanted to add that quite a few people have been definitely disappointed with the JD-08 boutique model of this synth. With the DAC/sampling rate discussion brought up here, Iwonder if that unit just has a poor sound interface?

It’s so nice with total recall of booth sound and sound settings. I do love the hardware, and I use it a lot making music. I did not have the chance to check out the JD08 boutique, but I guess I have to have that one too..😂 Today I will pick up my JX08 , even though I have the original JX8P… but once a synth geek.. always a synth geek 😃😂😂
to my ears and revealing headphones, the real JD-800 sound considerably more rich and wide than its software synth counterpart. But it also depends on which DAC is being used for the software version.
I’m using the fireface 800. And I guess that you can always hear difference when you set it up like this, but if it was a blind test I don’t think you can tell who is who.. and in a mix with other instruments I guess it’s impossible to point it out :)
@Жан Клон I disagree :) on some sounds both are near-identical, but with some sound, esp. those with swirling overtones, the JD offers more complex distribution in stereo panorama which adds to the impression of 'wideness'. Good example for this is the 'bells' component of the first sound Glenn is testing, Fantasia. Fantasia also makes evident the 'analog warmth' of which JD800 is famous for - any 'tone colour' is pleasant to the ear. The soft synth produces hard and static sounding overtones in the sustains, e.g. at end of 2:17 the sustaining tone has a short sinusoidal phase.
Software sometimes feels “choked”. Hardware is more dynamic in loudness. Im listening with AirPods.. I guess the hardware goes through a preamp so there always going to be some difference against the very clean software version.
That is true. The hardware goes through my Fireface 800 sound card. And as I’m saying in the video, I could not tell the different in a blind test or in a mix with other instruments 😃😃😃
he also did say hat his KORG keyboard has different velocity scaling.. and to me that accounts for the brightness of the sound, but there's seems to be a low end bump around 100 Hz on the original, that may be due to the amplifier in the unit.
I am not sure about that, but I guess that Roland support has the answer to it. And I believe you can find something about the issue on the Roland homepage:)

Great, I think, only if money and space is an issue- owning the real thing will always be better in some way to a clone, but can become a labour of love. This particular synth self-destructs if you haven't already replaced the keyboard, and the little connecting ribbon is almost unobtanium.. Up until about 5 years ago , even, Roland were still replacing these for free.. Yay Roland ! )I'd be interested to know if the accordion etc. card waveforms are included ? The string one alone has been seen reaching many hundreds of £££.
Oh yes ;) I do agree with you ;) If I had a bigger studio I would have all my plug-ins in “real” things… but for now I have a total of 23 synths in and around my studio… so I guess I have to go for software for a while.. although I have plenty of sounds to play with…:)
Guys.. what you hear on the ROLAND emulationas are THE SAME Original soundware wich are traslated in different platforms,,,but the REAL difference are the ANALOG convertionson the OLD synths including noise and stuff.. but you can emulate all of this today with MANY plugins that are ALMOST perfect for that. So in terms of the SOUND structure.. THEY are the SAME.
It's fun to read the comments from the purists because I've been one too for many years before I finally woke up. After shedding thousands on real gear that would keep me worried all the time with parts breaking, opamps dying etc, I learned to appreciate plugin instruments more than anything. You can literally carry around a synth studio in your computer that will sound every bit as good as your old gear. Recallability, portability, pristine digital sound and the possibility to multiply the instances greatly make up for any tiny difference in sound. So I sold basically everything and kept only a couple for nostalgia. Ah, the space and money I recouped..

I dont know why some of you are worried..... JD-800 was a digital synth, the cloud version is THE SAME since it is from Roland who owns the original code. The only challenge might be to not make it sound "too good" in the cloud version. The older DA converters affected the sound etc
BTW, i am only buying the digital synths off of Roland Cloud, and only as a one time license. Monthly fees are not for me... Roland analogue synths i have to find as clones or originals, dont feel they can be recreated digitally in a way that will do them justice.
Wait till you start doing repairs on JD 800. Had 2 of them very expensive, if you can find a qualified tech. Still have the JD990 plus synth and string cards sweet.
Hi Glenn, I'm really grateful for these videos, they're really helpful. I've owned my JD800 since about 1993 and am really torn about whether to sell it after all these years and get a Rev2... It makes sense to me because as it is a digital synth that a good plug in / simulation should be very close to how it sounds but nothing sounds the same as a real analogue synth. What I wanted to ask you is if you know whether the Cloud version can accept Sysex from a real machine? That way, I will still be able to use all my current sounds. (i always record a sysex dump of the patch at the start of any track where I use one!) (cool tshirt btw! 😉 😀 )
I did not try the sysex options on it, but it would be great to transfer back and forth the sounds from the plug-in to the real thing. I will check it out asap :)

I would expect that Roland would recompile the software that originally ran on the synth itself, so that part should be exactly identical. The only difference would then be caused by the analog section. Then again, in one of your previous videos there were some differences in sound between hardware and VST. Maybe they don't have the original firmware sources of some of their synths anymore, although that would surprise me.
NO , the re-used the same tvf filter as found in the previous fantoms and INtegra pcm engine , also in the zencrore , this filter maxes out at 11Khz The jd 800 tvf filter maxes out at 12 Khz and it sounds way better , it's resonant peaks while it can clip can also sound verry analogue like >Peaple have been wanting a jd800 emaultion because of it's filter and now Roland just repackages everything WITHOUT the most important thin : THE filter You can clearly hear that at 02:50 , the original filter sounds brigher and juicy

@@nkronert Becasue it's Roland , they have been recycling thigs to death I agree that some of the users don't really cae as long as it sounds close enough , but the truth is that the filter is NOT modelled If you know anyhting about roland's diigal filters , the jd 800-jd990 was spectucalur sounding but it could alos easily overdrive and clip because there wasn't a gain paramater. They corrected this in the jv1080-2080 but the filter was not as good and the top frequency was 11Khz Then the xv5080 came along , with some small modificatons to the filter , still nowhere as good as the original jd800 The TVF filter in the xv5080 is also used in the famtom line , the mc 909 , the integra and the zencore engine It is this exact same filter that is re-used Take my word for it , Roland does great things , but they also know that most people are blindly believing their promotion tactics ,all it takes is some research and a spectrum analyzer
in 1 I put the Jupiter, in 2 the JP-800 which have more brilliance/dynamics and after the PC emulation the quality of the components and the place of manufacture In some sounds we don't hear this difference on an oscilloscope compare the curves
The original sound is slightly fatter on balance. The cloud version is very close but thinner. The cloud version will stand up on it's own until you hear the original. Thank God I did not sell mine. I've had mine over 25 years. It suffered the red glue of death. I had it serviced in 2020, now it's just like new.
Nothing beats the original..:) But as you mentioned the plug-in sounds great , and the nice thing about the plug-in is that you have as many JD’s as your computer can deal with 😃😃😃
2:22 yea taking into account the difference in velocity/volume between the two keyboards im just gonna add the Sony Inflator & trust the sound coming thru the Yamaha HS80M & the rewards from puttin' out good useful shii into the domain for the audience will allow me to easily afford a good JD hardware without even thinking about it💫
3:43 yea I just turned on my subwoofer to hear the full spectrum & make a final decision on cutting tracks w/ just the Cloud other than the velocity/volume difference..the bass is therellive confirmed Roland is using wavetables just like the hardware we've just gotta find ways to pump up the density in the mix..if its even needed lot of these sounds dont need to be dense in the mix anyway w/ other tracks🤔
Hey a 2 year belated nice studio! I bought my JD-800 new in the early 90’s to replace my Jupiter 8, the JD-800 had a realistic piano sound which meant I didn’t need the CP-70 anymore, the Crystal Rhodes meant I didn’t need my DX7 or DynoMy Fender Rhodes anymore, and the strings were real samples unlike my Jupiter 8, it was a logical upgrade to my Jupiter 8 though I’m sure young guys today would probably laugh seeming the Jupiter’s now sell for 20k used (I laugh at this one since it took me a month to finally find a buyer for mine at US $450.00 in 1990 .. seriously! I still have my JD-800 and it’s still in mint condition like it was new, I also have the cloud version, the cloud version definitely reminds me of the real thing, but my real JD-800 definitely sounds different in its tonal quality, it’s those clean icy converters Roland was using in its JV/JD series back then .. you can’t replicate that with any in the box synth these days apart from taking a direct sample of it into Kontakt .. then you can side by side compare and not hear the difference .. at least that’s been my experience. But I admit of the 20 or so hardware synths I still have strewn around my house including the JD-800 .. I have not even turned them on in years now, there is no need too, there are so many wonderful sounds I can get in the box these days that we could only dream of in the 80/90’s, I’m like a boomer age kid in a candy store. I don’t make my living as a keyboard player like I did up to the late 90’s, but man live players sure got it made these days, if I were playing live these days it’d be 2 Korg Microkey Air 61 keyboard controllers and a laptop .. that’s it .. no visits to the chiropractor from moving big keyboards around 😬 Enjoy that beautiful gear 👍

You have some Roland boutiques, so it wouldn't surprise me if you buy the JD-08 that's a JD800 with extra waveforms and polyphony. Would be great to hear that against the real JD800 as well! :) Thanks for this video - you did a great job. Question: What if you played the software version using your hardware JD800? Then the velocities would/should/could be the same.
2:48 a recent Trance track on the charts has this bass sweep sound @ the drop & i thought where the fvck have I heard this in my life..in music & movies ive heard it for sure THIS is the sound..Im sure other boards have something similar..but this is the preset used in the majors
Yes it’s a tiny bitt difference.. but I think that if I only played the sound from the pc, and not together with the original.. no one could tell it in a mix 😃😃😃
But in the mix you probably will tweek it anyway. But I guess my ears have been trough lots of live gigs and.. so maybe I dont hear the difference so much.. but keep in mind that if you listen to a phone, or youtube i general compress the sound, so maybe thats why ? Anyway, it is a great plugin in my oppinion :-)

Maybe I'm too picky, I am a mastering engineer with a hearing up to 19.2khz, not going to gigs for not ruining my hearing. If you gig a lot, it makes sense not hearing the ultra highs at the same level as other frequencies
There is a slight difference. But they actually sound the same. The difference is because in this test the real one is one or two db louder and that fools us into thinking it sounds different. It doesn’t. Also the velocity is different because of the physical keyboards. You can adjust a physical midi controller to have the same velocity sensitivity which would make the attack exactly the same. Technically the plug-in “might” sound a little better because whatever interface you use will probably have better converters than the original keyboard. If you have a cheap focusrite you won’t be able to tell, but if you have a high end interface like a lynx or Burl the plug-in will sound a little better - but just out of your speakers. In a mix should be very similar if not identical. The jd800 is a digital synth so all this makes sense. There is more of a difference in the analog vs digital plug-in world.
..imma try the Sony Oxford Inflator on the Roland Cloud synths to emulate the 'phatness' lost in translation i really think its just all the hardware audio outputs add something to it that software cant..same w/ the Virus TI vs Viper VSTi only way to get the hardware output sound in DAW VST maybe a high-quality rompler like Spectrasonics Ominsphere/Keyscape

I realised after the recording the “unbalance” in volum.. but you can still hear that they sound very much the same.. but yes.. point taken 😂 I will make sure in my future videos that the volume (the easiest task) should be more equal 😃😃😃 But anyway ai take it as a compliment that you actually heard the difference in volume 😃😃😃

gotta respect Yamaha DX/TX and Korg M1/Wavestation/Triton but Roland..all throughout the history of music..all genres..monumental machines.. & ive got family in the major studio game..grammy winning..they'll rent keyboards for fun but the Roland gear is the sound that they cut the final masters with..& ive seen this w/ other labels too LaFace Atlanta / Cherion Sweden / FlyteTime Minneapolis / Chocolate Factory Chicago / all Roland based its THE sound of billboard radio..disney soundtracks..tv shows..new age..house/trance..Roland is EVERYWHERE in the same way that every studio house have a pair of Yamaha monitors for that radio sound we here EVERYWHERE🔴
Hi Glenn, no it's definitely a stock kit inside the JD800 There should be a multi button,.click the MULTI button ..then click PART > button. The display should read: MULTI PartS 001 CH:10 INTERNAL Setup Those are the drum/percussive samples Tony Banks plays on I Can't Dance. The funny thing is many JD800 owners don't even know that stock kit exists in there. Love your channel by the way.
dont even get me started on the fact that it shows the A= master tuning in the corner there when my intention is to inject A=432Hz into the domain..i get bored detuning on every preset change the only modern song that has 432 is Seal - Kiss from a Rose..produced by Trevor Horn (Art of Noise) otherwise its just in new age binaural meditation types..the frequency hits the core in a different way
If i would not hate cloud stuff, I would get it, but its a no never ever for me option. I hate and reject all cloud Services. Its like renting a car, is the same stupid. And btw there is a slight difference between the Vst and Hardware. The Vst sounds a little bit dull, but in general it is very good.
I see what you mean.. and I was against the cloud in the start as well. But like the JD800 you buy a lifetime key.. so it’s forever.. at least as long as the cloud is the cloud 😂

I think noone can help me, because I am a Hardware Fan, and so a Vst Instrument on my Harddisk will always be second choice, but a cloud Instrument is not mine and a cloud is like a bird on the roof.... We Musicans are psychological maybe mentally abnormal, but when it helps to get better results with a better feeling then it has already helped. Others are different, and thats good. I accept each individuality. And btw I like your show on yt, great Videoshow!
There will always be differences between hardware and software… it is something special about analog components inside a synth… it is a reason why I use hardware synths myself. But it is great to use in pre productions just to decide what patch to use, and then when you’re ready you can just record the “real thing”. That’s often how I do it in my studio, and That is also nice for live setups to have the same “sounds” :)

Yes you have bad ears , sure you can not really hear the difference if the comparison files have no filter modulations and are are just straight trumpets , pianos and pads etc , the actual pcm sample data is the same But once you dial filter mod + resoance , the differnece is night and day Then @ 09:00 you use the velocity as an excuse , noppes it's filter my friend that is casuing the difference
Of course man :) That’s what I try to tell in the start of the video as well.. this is not a deep dive, just presets compeared. The velocity I am talking about is the fault in my keyboard on the real JD800. My “C” and “D” are only playing on full velocity, so when a sound depends on how it will shape when you hit multiple keys makes a difference. 😃 But anyway… I have done live gigs in over 30 years now.. so I guess my ears are a bit “out of higher range” 😂😂 But I am really glad you are pointing out some very important aspects of the comparison 😃😃😃
always the same from hardware vs software demos i watch always slightly more low end bass & mid density.."phatness"..but is it just due to VST not having hardware outputs? i found a good JD @ $4K..and I will earn that reward..but.. in a mix..to 99% of the audience..I will know the difference..but they will not..& in business..they matter most
Talked to my friend today who has a beautiful Studio and he bought $750 worth of patches 6 months ago uncludig the JD800 and to day it said on his screen that cloud didn't recognize him and even after trying and trying to speak with Roland , he has a feeling he's talking to a robot and gtes answered everything from dumb to we don't care answers so don't buy no online cloud products from Roland , they have the worst customer service.
Did he tryed to contact them via “Roland Backstage” ? I have really great experience by going that way… that’s the support channel for Roland .. try that :) hope things will sort out 😃
Looks cool, sounds terrible. Who needs that awful sound in 2020s?? Even d-50 sounds a lot better. In my opinion it would make a lot more sense for Roland to make plugin versions of V-Synth, JP-8000 and maybe something like Boss Dr-660.
The JD800 has the best sounding pads of any machine for me, and that VST sounds awesome.. I can't tell the difference. But I just hate the idea of "subscribing to VST's", I really hate this cloud trend of not really owning anything
I also wish that the VST just were "mine" as well, but it is a low price anyway :-) Just be sure to bounce your audio after every finnished project.. just in case :-)
You can purchase a full license. Also, after you have subscribed for a while they give you two free instruments. I bagged the System 8 and Jupiter 8. 300 dollars of software after subscribing for a year or so.
As mentioned, there is a perpetual license available for purchase, which is a big difference if you look at most other cloud offers where you have no choice or where certain products are only available as subscription. Personally, I am very hesitant when it comes to subscriptions, but if you compare Roland Cloud with other offers (except East West), the value is fantastic. Vendors like iZotope or Accusonus have nearly the same monthly asking price for just a hand full of plugins, which are hardly regularly expanded so far. Roland on the other hand is constantly rolling out new sounds, samples and instruments - so a lot of bang for the buck.
@Жан Клон Yes, but were were referring to the purchase option (which is 149 USD per plugin) or to the different subscriptions, where there are a different number of instruments included during the subscription period based on the plan (pro or ultimate). Indeed, the Loyalty program has ended - but it was always only for those who have had a subscription for at least 12 months.

it feels like the Cloud Version doesn't have as much high-frequencies? it feels like the filter is closed more on some of the presets. The presets on the original seem to almost have a smiley-curve. Nothing you can't EQ and make it even more identical :)
That’s true, an ea would fix that , but then again you always have to do some eq tweaking in the mix anyway 😃😃
yeah, I own the original JD990 and it’s different, but since getting the plugin it still collects dust now. the OG has a bit more presence and it sounds noticeably more 3D to my ears, but I chalk it up to extra saturation from the output stage and my preamp, as well as more discrepancies between the L/R channels due to the inherent imperfection of analog output/input. nothing I can’t replicate in the mix though and not enough for me to deal with the hassle of latency and all that in a busy project. slap a good saturator on the plugin and a channel strip emulation and it’s close enough.

And VST are not inspiring, there is a big difference here with the true machine (and I'm very sad for people that can't hear it...).
The same, when I'm playing music, I'm not always playing "for a mix", I'm playing because I love music in the first place, and i need the instrument to the best possible.
So the "in a mix you can't tell the difference" is, for me, just a kind of running joke. It is not serious. VST are still not at the level to be played like real instruments, that's the point. One day, perhaps, it will come...like the prince in the Disney song...
I think we must tell the truth, VST are still not good enough to be considered as true instruments. They can be used, they can be even loved for their sound signature, they can also fool people "in a mix", but as a musician it is too poor. They are missing the vibrancy you need to express yourself and be inspired. And specifically, Roland has taken the wrong road becoming a software only company trying to simulate what they did in the past. New machines are made by Studio Electronics (the SE-09) or Malekko (system 500). They lost their soul. We must tell them, in each review. Because it is so sad to see Roland becoming a kind of Arturia when you know all the good machines they created in past. They were a legend, and they are now the shadow of a legend, sad.

The real JD800 somehow seems to have more "presence" - it's hard to define.
What a missed opportunity the cloud version seems to be - no expansion cards, no loading of sysex from a real JD ...
The Strings card/waves set remains a bit of a holy grail for many JD800 owners. If they had built it in, it might have made the cloud version a more likely purchase for me.
And there is no replacing the sheer simplicity of the interface of the real JD800 - one slider = one function! It's still an utter joy to program. I was building new pad sounds only the other day and, after 20-odd years the beast can still surprise!
I expect most purchasers will do so just t get the presets but this thing does so much more.
Let’s hope Roland will release all the “cards” and that sysex will be added to 😃😃😃 It’s nice if you can use the plug-in as an editor at the same time 😃😃
they have released all the SRX expansions, so it is probably just a matter of time until they get around to it.
Also if you buy a plugin in 20 years time it’ll be worthless. If you buy a JD in 20 years time it’ll be worth probably 4x what you paid for it.

Was your DAW at 44.1 sampling rate, we did a similar shootout and at 96K it's indistinguishable, I'm not try to start a sampling rate flame war, but some synths just work better at higher sampling rates, the difference is a bit of the timing of the software synth putting the multiple sounds together. At 44.1 the secondary sounds like in the fantasy preset bell are just a few milliseconds behind compared to the original. But once we moved up to 96k we no longer could tell the difference. In a mix no one would be able to tell the difference between the hardware or the plugin so really it doesn't matter just make great music with what you have. Roland did a fantastic job on this plugin and your playing is just beyond talented!! Thanks for the video.

Well the idea behind the jd 800 was to have a digital synth with the user interface like an analog synth.
Most digital synths at that time had a display and like 2 faders to program sounds...
And now : it's the other way around. With a vst you have the mouse and a computer keyboard (and maybe some controllers).
Surely it's nice to have that sounds in a inexpensive way but I always would prefer the hardware... That is where the real fun is.

Once you've recorded either of them and they've been mixed onto a production there won't be a way to tell what was used. It would have been nice if it had all the 990 stuff and all sounds bundled as well as sysex support but as is it's a great replacement for my original JD800

First of all....awesome comparison! question...do you think the velocity sensitivity, range, or curve is different in the software/Kronos vs the real hardware? It seems that the hardware gives more consistent and direct sounds due to consistent possibly slightly stronger velocity when the sounds are triggered. I often wonder if that's the issue with a lot of soft syths....it seems they are way more sensitive to velocity and often are on the softer end (maybe it's the midi controllers) vs hardware which makes me almost always prefer the hardware.

Yes I believe it all depends on the keybed. I find the Roland keybed to be a bit “softer” if you know what I mean. The KORG is more “quick responsive” and of course my original JD800 have been on the road and been used a lot.. so that might have something to do with it as well :)

In this comparison, the software seems to be quite a bit more filtered, losing some treble and some volume. I can even hear it through the tiny, crappy speakers of my iPad. It almost sounds like if you had some EQ dialed in. Is it some velocity curve mapped to the filter? In any way, thank you for this video!
There might be a slightly difference between the volum here, and the velocity on my Original is a bit “strange” on some keys.. so I believe that will make some difference. But by the end of the day it is not possible to pinpoint software usage in a full mix I believe :) Anyway… just love the VST in the way that I can have as many JD 800 I like 😃😃
Wow, great comparison!! Subscribed!! I sold my JD-800 years ago and am still kicking myself, even though I own a JD-990 now. I just let one go I found for a decent, but still absurdly high price compared to what I paid for mine back in the day - thinking that money was better put toward a Jupiter-X. Now I don't feel so bad I didn't buy that JD-800 :) (but I still miss it!)

I like the comparsion. But one thing is very sad, there is no sysex option to get the 3rd party sounds into the vst. That is actually a no use argument for me. I´ve got many sounds that i used live and it would be fantastic if i didn´t need to carry the jd to the live gigs anymore and using instead the vst. Any solving options for sysex at the horizion!?

Korg's M1 & Wavestation software can imporant sysex patches, but their Triton can't, unless sysex was added to the Triton Extreme VST, which I'm not sure.
For me it was in the lower regions that I could really hear the difference.

The software often sounds with a different spatiality, hardware is more "in front of the face" and also with richer and deeper bass sounds compared to the software.
A question: Roland cloud software works as a stand alone software or do they need other software working together (as DAW or a Roland software support).

Aside from the attack difference you noticed, the only appreciable differences I noticed was in that slow bell pad and maybe one other. And yeah, maybe if you sent a MIDI signal from one keyboard to all of them, maybe they’d sound closer.
A lot of people seem to hate on Roland Cloud, but personally, I’ve been amazed at how the instruments sound! I just renewed my subscription for my second year last month. They really added a lot of content and updates this past year, not to mention addressed two minor issues I contacted support about relatively quickly.
EDIT: I just wanted to add that quite a few people have been definitely disappointed with the JD-08 boutique model of this synth. With the DAC/sampling rate discussion brought up here, Iwonder if that unit just has a poor sound interface?

It’s so nice with total recall of booth sound and sound settings. I do love the hardware, and I use it a lot making music. Kevin Moore has a ton of sounds.. so it all depends on what sounds you’re looking for 😃😃
to my ears and revealing headphones, the real JD-800 sound considerably more rich and wide than its software synth counterpart. But it also depends on which DAC is being used for the software version.
I’m using the fireface 800. And I guess that you can always hear difference when you set it up like this, but if it was a blind test I don’t think you can tell who is who.. and in a mix with other instruments I guess it’s impossible to point it out :)

@Жан Клон I disagree :) on some sounds both are near-identical, but with some sound, esp. those with swirling overtones, the JD offers more complex distribution in stereo panorama which adds to the impression of 'wideness'. Good example for this is the 'bells' component of the first sound Glenn is testing, Fantasia. Fantasia also makes evident the 'analog warmth' of which JD800 is famous for - any 'tone colour' is pleasant to the ear. The soft synth produces hard and static sounding overtones in the sustains, e.g. at end of 2:17 the sustaining tone has a short sinusoidal phase.
Software sometimes feels “choked”. Hardware is more dynamic in loudness. Im listening with AirPods.. I guess the hardware goes through a preamp so there always going to be some difference against the very clean software version.
That is true. The hardware goes through my Fireface 800 sound card. And as I’m saying in the video, I could not tell the different in a blind test or in a mix with other instruments 😃😃😃
he also did say hat his KORG keyboard has different velocity scaling.. and to me that accounts for the brightness of the sound, but there's seems to be a low end bump around 100 Hz on the original, that may be due to the amplifier in the unit.

Great, I think, only if money and space is an issue- owning the real thing will always be better in some way to a clone, but can become a labour of love. This particular synth self-destructs if you haven't already replaced the keyboard, and the little connecting ribbon is almost unobtanium.. Up until about 5 years ago , even, Roland were still replacing these for free.. Yay Roland ! )I'd be interested to know if the accordion etc. card waveforms are included ? The string one alone has been seen reaching many hundreds of £££.
Oh yes ;) I do agree with you ;) If I had a bigger studio I would have all my plug-ins in “real” things… but for now I have a total of 23 synths in and around my studio… so I guess I have to go for software for a while.. although I have plenty of sounds to play with…:)
Guys.. what you hear on the ROLAND emulationas are THE SAME Original soundware wich are traslated in different platforms,,,but the REAL difference are the ANALOG convertionson the OLD synths including noise and stuff.. but you can emulate all of this today with MANY plugins that are ALMOST perfect for that. So in terms of the SOUND structure.. THEY are the SAME.

It's fun to read the comments from the purists because I've been one too for many years before I finally woke up. After shedding thousands on real gear that would keep me worried all the time with parts breaking, opamps dying etc, I learned to appreciate plugin instruments more than anything.
You can literally carry around a synth studio in your computer that will sound every bit as good as your old gear. Recallability, portability, pristine digital sound and the possibility to multiply the instances greatly make up for any tiny difference in sound. So I sold basically everything and kept only a couple for nostalgia. Ah, the space and money I recouped..

I dont know why some of you are worried..... JD-800 was a digital synth, the cloud version is THE SAME since it is from Roland who owns the original code. The only challenge might be to not make it sound "too good" in the cloud version. The older DA converters affected the sound etc
BTW, i am only buying the digital synths off of Roland Cloud, and only as a one time license. Monthly fees are not for me... Roland analogue synths i have to find as clones or originals, dont feel they can be recreated digitally in a way that will do them justice.
That makes two of us 😃 I only buy lifetime keys and download sound sets for my Jupiter XM and M 707 😃😃

Hi Glenn, I'm really grateful for these videos, they're really helpful. I've owned my JD800 since about 1993 and am really torn about whether to sell it after all these years and get a Rev2...
It makes sense to me because as it is a digital synth that a good plug in / simulation should be very close to how it sounds but nothing sounds the same as a real analogue synth.
What I wanted to ask you is if you know whether the Cloud version can accept Sysex from a real machine? That way, I will still be able to use all my current sounds. (i always record a sysex dump of the patch at the start of any track where I use one!)

Usually I just record the single patch at the start of the track I use it on in Logic/Cubase so it will be great if I can keep my sounds, if I sell the keyboard.
I would expect that Roland would recompile the software that originally ran on the synth itself, so that part should be exactly identical. The only difference would then be caused by the analog section. Then again, in one of your previous videos there were some differences in sound between hardware and VST. Maybe they don't have the original firmware sources of some of their synths anymore, although that would surprise me.
The difference is , I my opinion, minimal. And they all sound great and inspiring 😃😃
NO , the re-used the same tvf filter as found in the previous fantoms and INtegra pcm engine , also in the zencrore , this filter maxes out at 11Khz
The jd 800 tvf filter maxes out at 12 Khz and it sounds way better , it's resonant peaks while it can clip can also sound verry analogue like >Peaple have been wanting a jd800 emaultion because of it's filter and now Roland just repackages everything WITHOUT the most important thin : THE filter
You can clearly hear that at 02:50 , the original filter sounds brigher and juicy

I agree that some of the users don't really cae as long as it sounds close enough , but the truth is that the filter is NOT modelled
If you know anyhting about roland's diigal filters , the jd 800-jd990 was spectucalur sounding but it could alos easily overdrive and clip because there wasn't a gain paramater.
They corrected this in the jv1080-2080 but the filter was not as good and the top frequency was 11Khz
Then the xv5080 came along , with some small modificatons to the filter , still nowhere as good as the original jd800
The TVF filter in the xv5080 is also used in the famtom line , the mc 909 , the integra and the zencore engine
It is this exact same filter that is re-used Take my word for it , Roland does great things , but they also know that most people are blindly believing their promotion tactics ,all it takes is some research and a spectrum analyzer
in 1 I put the Jupiter, in 2 the JP-800 which have more brilliance/dynamics and after the PC emulation
the quality of the components and the place of manufacture
In some sounds we don't hear this difference

The original sound is slightly fatter on balance. The cloud version is very close but thinner. The cloud version will stand up on it's own until you hear the original. Thank God I did not sell mine. I've had mine over 25 years. It suffered the red glue of death. I had it serviced in 2020, now it's just like new.
Nothing beats the original..:) But as you mentioned the plug-in sounds great , and the nice thing about the plug-in is that you have as many JD’s as your computer can deal with 😃😃😃

other than the velocity/volume difference..the bass is therellive confirmed Roland is using wavetables just like the hardware

I bought my JD-800 new in the early 90’s to replace my Jupiter 8, the JD-800 had a realistic piano sound which meant I didn’t need the CP-70 anymore, the Crystal Rhodes meant I didn’t need my DX7 or DynoMy Fender Rhodes anymore, and the strings were real samples unlike my Jupiter 8, it was a logical upgrade to my Jupiter 8 though I’m sure young guys today would probably laugh seeming the Jupiter’s now sell for 20k used (I laugh at this one since it took me a month to finally find a buyer for mine at US $450.00 in 1990 .. seriously! I still have my JD-800 and it’s still in mint condition like it was new, I also have the cloud version, the cloud version definitely reminds me of the real thing, but my real JD-800 definitely sounds different in its tonal quality, it’s those clean icy converters Roland was using in its JV/JD series back then .. you can’t replicate that with any in the box synth these days apart from taking a direct sample of it into Kontakt .. then you can side by side compare and not hear the difference .. at least that’s been my experience. But I admit of the 20 or so hardware synths I still have strewn around my house including the JD-800 .. I have not even turned them on in years now, there is no need too, there are so many wonderful sounds I can get in the box these days that we could only dream of in the 80/90’s, I’m like a boomer age kid in a candy store. I don’t make my living as a keyboard player like I did up to the late 90’s, but man live players sure got it made these days, if I were playing live these days it’d be 2 Korg Microkey Air 61 keyboard controllers and a laptop .. that’s it .. no visits to the chiropractor from moving big keyboards around 😬 Enjoy that beautiful gear 👍

That was my dream synth back then.. but I got the KORG Trident… and I also regret selling that one 😃😃 But we wanted upgrades and new gear… so I guess we all made some mistakes along the way… 😂 But I’m like you.. a kid in a candy store when testing and buying VST synths 😃😃😃
You have some Roland boutiques, so it wouldn't surprise me if you buy the JD-08 that's a JD800 with extra waveforms and polyphony. Would be great to hear that against the real JD800 as well! :) Thanks for this video - you did a great job. Question: What if you played the software version using your hardware JD800? Then the velocities would/should/could be the same.

Sometimes, I think I can hear a difference, but not at every patches. My guess is, the difference is caused by the PC audio chip. Not sure.
Yes it’s a tiny bitt difference.. but I think that if I only played the sound from the pc, and not together with the original.. no one could tell it in a mix 😃😃😃

But in the mix you probably will tweek it anyway. But I guess my ears have been trough lots of live gigs and.. so maybe I dont hear the difference so much.. but keep in mind that if you listen to a phone, or youtube i general compress the sound, so maybe thats why ? Anyway, it is a great plugin in my oppinion :-)

Maybe I'm too picky, I am a mastering engineer with a hearing up to 19.2khz, not going to gigs for not ruining my hearing. If you gig a lot, it makes sense not hearing the ultra highs at the same level as other frequencies

@@jayjones2821 might be, yes. The highs make my ears bleed on the real thing, but on the VST they are softer
There is a slight difference. But they actually sound the same. The difference is because in this test the real one is one or two db louder and that fools us into thinking it sounds different. It doesn’t. Also the velocity is different because of the physical keyboards. You can adjust a physical midi controller to have the same velocity sensitivity which would make the attack exactly the same.
Technically the plug-in “might” sound a little better because whatever interface you use will probably have better converters than the original keyboard. If you have a cheap focusrite you won’t be able to tell, but if you have a high end interface like a lynx or Burl the plug-in will sound a little better - but just out of your speakers. In a mix should be very similar if not identical.
The jd800 is a digital synth so all this makes sense. There is more of a difference in the analog vs digital plug-in world.

Big difference in harmonics.... May be the gain settings aren't the same. But in a mix there would be no difference at all
..imma try the Sony Oxford Inflator on the Roland Cloud synths to emulate the 'phatness' lost in translation
i really think its just all the hardware audio outputs add something to it that software cant..same w/ the Virus TI vs Viper VSTi
only way to get the hardware output sound in DAW VST maybe a high-quality rompler like Spectrasonics Ominsphere/Keyscape

I know, but I don’t go “in depth” so much , and yes.. I realised after the recording the “unbalance” in volum.. but you can still hear that they sound very much the same.. but yes.. point taken 😂 I will make sure in my future videos that the volume (the easiest task) should be more equal 😃😃😃 But anyway ai take it as a compliment that you actually heard the difference in volume 😃😃😃

I dont know the «Numbers» But it seems to use Very little of the CPU When uploaded as VST in my Cubase :)

The main issue I have with the VST is it doesn't have Tony Banks' "I Can't Dance" percussive sounds. I'm very surprised they didn't include it.

Hi Glenn, no it's definitely a stock kit inside the JD800 There should be a multi button,.click the MULTI button ..then click PART > button. The display should read:

Those are the drum/percussive samples Tony Banks plays on I Can't Dance. The funny thing is many JD800 owners don't even know that stock kit exists in there. Love your channel by the way.

If i would not hate cloud stuff, I would get it, but its a no never ever for me option. I hate and reject all cloud Services. Its like renting a car, is the same stupid. And btw there is a slight difference between the Vst and Hardware. The Vst sounds a little bit dull, but in general it is very good.
I see what you mean.. and I was against the cloud in the start as well. But like the JD800 you buy a lifetime key.. so it’s forever.. at least as long as the cloud is the cloud 😂

I think noone can help me, because I am a Hardware Fan, and so a Vst Instrument on my Harddisk will always be second choice, but a cloud Instrument is not mine and a cloud is like a bird on the roof.... We Musicans are psychological maybe mentally abnormal, but when it helps to get better results with a better feeling then it has already helped. Others are different, and thats good. I accept each individuality. And btw I like your show on yt, great Videoshow!

Right, I miss the body of the sounds. Same with the Prophet V: the real has more body. (body ~= low frequenties)
There will always be differences between hardware and software… it is something special about analog components inside a synth… it is a reason why I use hardware synths myself. But it is great to use in pre productions just to decide what patch to use, and then when you’re ready you can just record the “real thing”. That’s often how I do it in my studio, and That is also nice for live setups to have the same “sounds” :)

Yes you have bad ears , sure you can not really hear the difference if the comparison files have no filter modulations and are are just straight trumpets , pianos and pads etc , the actual pcm sample data is the same
But once you dial filter mod + resoance , the differnece is night and day
Then @ 09:00 you use the velocity as an excuse , noppes it's filter my friend that is casuing the difference
Of course man :) That’s what I try to tell in the start of the video as well.. this is not a deep dive, just presets compeared. The velocity I am talking about is the fault in my keyboard on the real JD800. My “C” and “D” are only playing on full velocity, so when a sound depends on how it will shape when you hit multiple keys makes a difference. 😃 But anyway… I have done live gigs in over 30 years now.. so I guess my ears are a bit “out of higher range” 😂😂 But I am really glad you are pointing out some very important aspects of the comparison 😃😃😃

Talked to my friend today who has a beautiful Studio and he bought $750 worth of patches
6 months ago uncludig the JD800 and to day it said on his screen that cloud didn't recognize him and even
after trying and trying to speak with Roland , he has a feeling he's talking to a robot and gtes answered everything from dumb to we don't care answers
so don't buy no online cloud products from Roland , they have the worst customer service.
Did he tryed to contact them via “Roland Backstage” ? I have really great experience by going that way… that’s the support channel for Roland .. try that :) hope things will sort out 😃
Looks cool, sounds terrible. Who needs that awful sound in 2020s?? Even d-50 sounds a lot better. In my opinion it would make a lot more sense for Roland to make plugin versions of V-Synth, JP-8000 and maybe something like Boss Dr-660.
Well… we all have different needs and preferences, but yes.. a cool drum machine would be cool 😃
