It's not about "beating" or doing the song better than Tina Turner; it's about taking an already great, iconic song and putting your own stamp on it, which is the marked of a great vocalist and s exactly what Annie Lennox here.
Also it looked like it was a lot of fun for everybody. Just think about the usual 90 minute set. There would be a lot of songs that were never more than second rate and having to do them all the time doesn't make them grow on you any better, except maybe as kind of like a cancer. And so if somebody suggests throwing "River Deep Mountain High" into the line up, well, yeah! sure!
Tina Turner was originally meant to duet with Annie on "Sisters are doing it for themselves". As great as Aretha is I always thought it was suited better to Tina's style, especially at the time it was recorded.
