  • Westlock, an Alberta town north of Edmonton, has voted in favour of a bylaw that bans Pride flags and rainbow crosswalks on municipal property.
    Last year, a group brought a petition to Westlock town council demanding neutrality in public spaces after a local gay-straight alliance painted the town's first Pride crosswalk. The petition, by law, triggered a plebiscite vote.
    A slim majority of residents who took part in the vote on Feb. 22 opted in favour of the town flying only government flags and painting crosswalks in a white striped pattern.
    There were 1,302 votes cast, with 663 people in favour and 639 opposed. Westlock has a population of 4,802.

      If Jesus came back he would be crucified, why do those in power hate love and keep the population divisive
      Why would I care what's painted on a crosswalk, I care about what Loblaws is charging, why can I get a good food box or odd bunch order for $20 but the grocery store would be $40
      I just got a good food box today, 3 oranges, 1 large sweet potato, bag of apples, pint of blueberries, bag of onions, bag of carrots, bunch of broccoli, bunch of asparagus, bag of potatoes, cucumber for $20
      Stores should mark down expired stuff to $1 for quick sale, I stead of destroying it in compacting dumpsters, maybe less food would go to waste and less people would need to use a food bank

    The reason why crosswalks, and curbs, are painted white or amber was developed for members of the CNIB (Canadian National Institute of the Blind) because those two colours are the most visibility to those who are partially blind and aids them in crossing an intersection safely. If you want a rainbow to walk over, paint your walk or driveway at home. We all have to navigate through our democratic cities as citizens.

    • @SquidandCatAdventures
      @SquidandCatAdventures 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We have a rainbow crosswalk in our town. Absolutely no visibility issues. And you can still have the white in addition to the rainbow. Don't act like you're opposed because of visibility. This is clearly bigotry and not about safety. Call a spade a spade if you're going to take down people's symbols of inclusion and diversity.

    Guess fracking what, the pride flag _does not_ promote diversity and inclusion, it's a symbol representing a minority community with very particular views -- anything but "neutral" -- which happen to be not especially life affirming. A black and white crosswalk is a symbol of nothing more than a crosswalk, and never has been affiliated with any political affiliation or social movement.

    • @Prohortico

      That was an insanely unintelligent thing to say by this major… promoting ‘diversity and inclusion’ with publicly funded infrastructure to represent an extremely small percentage of the population who belongs to an ‘exclusive club’ that most want to stay as far away from as possible… as Westlock has proven. Using our tax dollars to maintain anything other than a regular crosswalk is an exclusionary action towards at least 50% + of the population, and a financial abuse of our tax dollars.
      Perhaps we should all be equal, leave the rainbow flag crosswalks, but also make some crosswalks with actual Christian Crosses and Jesus fish, and some can be the crescent moon and star for the muslims… or maybe put them all side by side at every cross walk, people can walk on whichever they choose…. 😂 such hypocrisy - leave the damn rainbow flag off publicly funded anything!!

Equality, to those who do not face constant discrimination and marginalization may seem as if its working as intended, but until you walk in someone else's shoes, you don't actually know. All this crosswalk was, and all pride flags are, are symbols to those who do not enjoy equal treatment and representation that they too are welcome, safe and appreciated for who they are. Its so disappointing that only one simple crosswalk and one pretty nice looking flag that literally includes every colour of the rainbow as a deliberate symbol of inclusion, should be excluded from public display as such a threat to so many people who don't want "those people" to be as equal as "me". I thought this was about city government
      of course gay people would have an "agenda" to fly pride flags, it makes the identity normalized and lowers their chances of being killed for who they are.

      @TaliaToATee And why do you feel you need to be heard above anyone else? Not only do you have the same rights and freedoms as everyone else, you are being given special attention. You already have special societal privileges. Straight white male talks disparagingly about certain groups out in public and is identifiable, they'll be fired/suspended, investigated for 'hate crime', fined and/or jailed. Yet when LGBT and other special groups talks disparagingly about straight white males, nothing comes of it.

    They keep talking about inclusion, but they've forgotten that the Canadian flag IS a symbol of inclusion. No one 8s stopping you from flying your rainbow flag anywhere on private property, but they don't belong on proprty that's owned by the entire population. In short, the Canadian flag represents ALL Canadians while the rainbow flag represents only a very small minority. A y government official who can't understand this simple fact should be removed from office as quickly as possible.
