  • So today I decided it was time to get my ac working again on my 1991 Mercedes 500sl. Wow what a task to reach the blower motor. Here is how you do it.

    About to do this job for the second time, but it has been a while since I did the last one. Searched for a DIY to refresh my memory, and found this one! :-) Great video!

    Thanks for the video. It helped me troubleshoot and replace my blower motor regulator for $35. Also helped me put it all back together, which is like doing a jigsaw puzzle.

    When you get that far at least replace the resistor, this usually causes the problems you described. I replaced mine and it solved my blower speed issues and it wasn't very expensive.

    I don’t know if you’ve got it back together already, but if not I highly recommend reinforcing the metal clip that holds the blower motor in place. The plastic nub it clips onto typically breaks and the result is the most annoying high pitched squeal. I used a long screw and nyloc nut to secure the metal clip.

      Thanks a lot for advice. I got it back together but after about 4 days of perfect ac, the blower went out again. I think it's the brush packs. I will pull apart again this week or next. Right now I'm driving my w140 and it's driving really nice, so I can take my time. Thanks again.

      I have that issue with mine. Sounds like a butchers band saw cutting through meat every time I make a right turn or put the fan speed on high (4 or 5).
      Getting to the blower motor is such a PITA why not change the resistor ?

    Same problem here. Had it many times at the shop will suggest brush pack and or or resistor hopefully. Swapped blower motor 4 times. Mechanic stated the replacement parts are not reliable since made in china 🤔. thanks for great video! 🙏🏻

      PS: was good for sometime after swapped with used part from W140. And if blower failed restarting car always fixed issue. Now restart doesn’t help anymore. Hope mechanic can fix it. It is currently super humid and hot here in south Florida and maybe that’s provoking the failings?

    Pete, my screws were stuck on the filter housing cover like yours. I drilled them out, bought new screws, and went to Fastenal to buy new press fittings that match the screws. I epoxied the press-fittings in the housing in the holes next to the filter, and it worked like a charm.
    Fun fix, well worth it. Great video!

    Fyi Theres 2 screws that remove a second firewall out, to make reaching the 3 10mm bolts out
    . Also the vacuum tubes should be rotated out, much easier other than that pro status! Nice vid.

    My center console never worked only the sides but it randomly stopped working as good, now i get such little air it doesn’t make a difference at all and doesn’t feel cold but the heater works great. Any idea on what I should check before taking everything apart?

    The brushes for that year auto will wear down to the point where they will work intermediately
    Plus the armitures will Gaul
    Change out the fan assy while you got it open

    My understanding is it’s not a good idea to run the AC with the top down in hot weather because it frosts up because it is working overtime especially somewhere like Florida. I know it’s nice to have the AC on but better to Put the top up in blazing weather then put the AC on.

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Makes sense but in Florida it's almost deadly to drive without ac even with top down. Lol

    I think the blower in my ‘01 R129 is going out. It started taking progressively longer and longer to kick on. From 15-20 seconds to now 10 min or longer. I will be undertaking this project in a few days. 😬

    Hey Pete, this is Manny. I’m using. I’m using my GF’s channel. Did you lube it? My friends SL was taking in rain water and was causing his blower to stick or slow down. Those systems have built in sensors that detect resistance in the blower, thus causing faults- as in not working/turning on

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man that would make so much sense and no I did not lube. I left most bolts and screws off. I did notice on full blast it didn't have as much power as before. More like a 3 or 2. How do I lube the motor?

      Just jumped on here to watch this excellent video as our local foreign car guy told us the resistor part was $600! YEAH RIGHT, we must look rich. Anywho, hard777, I have a feeling you are referring to why the auto top is NOT responding. I know this question is a year old, but if it can help someone else...on these vehicles, if the battery dies or is disconnected for a period of time, the car forgets how to make the top move and a simple but rather expensive reprogramming will fix that issue. We keep a trickly charge on the battery during the winter months. We recently had to change out one of the hydraulic cylinders and once again we will have to bring the car to get reprogrammed. It does fix the problem but costs us roughly $350.

    Pete, I own a 1991 Mercedes Benz 500SL Roadster and I just paid to have the AC Recharged. The center console blows cold air, yet the two side vents and the floor vents blow hot air when they should also be blowing cold air. Also, there is a noise that goes on when the ac system is turned on and diminishes when turning the car wheel to the left. Dela who handled the AC recharge believes its an actuator issue. What are your thoughts?

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it's most likely the blend door actuator. I'm guessing you are getting cold in the center because you have the blue button selected.

      @@petescarport Pete, I just spoke with Charles at the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center USA in Irvine CA who tells me that the vehicle functions with 6 vacuum actuator valves and he sent me a diagram. Would you email me, so I can share the diagram and you can tell me what part you're referring to prior to purchasing a new part? (BALANCENTERTAINMENT@GMAIL.COM)

    • @balanceentertainment1823
      @balanceentertainment1823 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petescarport Also, you are right on. I only feel cold air when the blue button is pressed. Again this is a 1991 500SL Roadster.

      @@petescarport I was able to create a link to the diagram using Google Drive: drive.google.com/file/d/1d6Nq-yjdmU39R7OP-f2I1xVVb1bKGKDl/view?usp=sharing

      @@balanceentertainment1823 so I tried link and for some reason it failed on my phone. Will try on computer but I'm guessing it's a box snapped thing with hoses. This is what my w126 has and most Benz, at least older ones. I have not worked on this part on my r129 but it should be a simple item with hoses. They do go bad and sometimes a hose will break or come loose. This happened in one of my older s500's and I got no air from side vents. I would recommend taking it out first and checking hoses for leaks or breaks. You can do a visual test and then if possible blow air I'm each hose to feel for leak. If all seems good I would swap out part
