Had this week exact Chat with clients who's color is a 4n and she wanted some h/l . After she saw some warm h/ls before toning ,her freak out was beyond. Toned on the level, looked lovely but she still felt she saw some warmth. Was about to shoot myself since I've explained this over and over again. Now I'm going to send your video to her and maybe she'll get it. TY
I wish I had an instructor as good as you in cosmology school! Imagine paying 20,000 for an education that didn’t teach me as much as I can get for free from TH-cam! 🤦🏼♀️ thank you for this!
OMG You just saved me with this video. I want to tone the level 7 orange/gold/yellow but I do want to keep some brightness. So mixing a level 7 with blue/violet and level 7 neutral should give me the results I need. Ive seen so many videos about toning and yours is BY FAR THE BEST VIDEO at explaining. Thank you.
Finally, someone who explained things in a way that makes sense. I want no yellow brass tones but all the advice keeps lightning my hair, but I dont want to be blonde. I want the cool dark tones! Thank you so much!
Hi Craig, a big fat thank you for doing this video. I did learn a lot about toning on the level through your previous videos, but this goes another level deeper, to help me find the correct toner on a level 7 that neutralizes the color, which is so great. And your way of teaching is so inspirational 🤩!
Hi Tania, a BIG fat thank you for TOTALLY making my day…perhaps week. I’m so glad you’re finding my content helpful and your support really means a lot. So kind… 👨🏻🙏🏻❤️
This is exactly what I was looking for! My hair is nearly identical to the brassy swatch so this is a great visual on how to neutalize the unwanted tones. Thank you!!
Great video. I loved the the cool = darker and some warm tones = lighter and brighter. I have noticed that but really understood with your explanation. Thanks!
Amazing explanations, thank you 👍🏻💐🌻 first time I think I understand this matter with brassy hair! The fact that cooler means darker is a complete new information for me, a doing my hair at home person 🙂
Just came here to say thank you. I usually color my hair with 8.1 and 7.0 it is brassy and I do not like that look. I used your formula 8N and 8VB with 1:1 ratio, 20 mins, yes just like you said my hair became 1 shade darker but all the brassy look is gone. Thank you very much.
I love the shade swatch videos! One thing that always scares me everytime is how dark shades eq go and I chicken out and wash it out too soon every time. I need to trust the process. Xx
Thank you, they are fun to make, I love a swatch! The processing makes a huge difference to how long SEQG lasts…and the tonal deposit. I use a lot of Clear… 👨🏼🙌🏻✨
also hairdresser here and this is so true 😂❤️cant have both love this great video! I also do my own hair at home and I go thru that choice so much my hairs warm rn and I had to make that choice lol 💇♀️
Thank you so much, something I have struggled with for years, as I always seen to end up warmer so the toning is a struggle for me, but I’m about to do my regrowth this next week so I’m going to give it a shot 👍🏻🤞🙏🏻🇦🇺🤷🏼♀️❤️
Love you! You explain everything so so well…if you want lighter and brighter blond, you need to put up with some warmth, if you want totally cool blond and no warmth it may be somewhat of a darker blond :) x
I couldn’t thank you more for your channel! The work you do is just amazing! For me you are the version of Lisa Eldridge in hair!!! Love love love your videos and your energy. Thank you so so much .
Thank you for posting this video :) ! I just bleached my wig a 2nd time and it has lifted to a level 9 or so all over with a bright yellow tone. I am a huge fan of maintaining brightness in lightened hair so naturally I'd like to keep some of the warmth there so it looks natural while being toned. Your video confirms what I've felt for years ! That overtly toned bleached hair looks dingy and dark ! Not a hairdresser, just someone who likes to do hair at home.
Coming back to this video because I'm going to bleach my hair again this week! It's a level 6 atm and I want to get to my natural colour which is like a neutral level 8 with a gold undertone and getting the exact match is going to be fun 😅 oh how I wish I never started dying my hair
QUESTION, with a very long intro. I have dark brown hair (I would say a level 2) and lightened it with Blondme 7 vol and Blondme clay lightener to a mixture of level 5 to 7, I think. Yes, it took me hours upon hours, mostly because I tried a w pattern balayage first (hence the clay lightener), then a weaving balayage, and finally I did an ombre, because, let's be fair, this is nearly impossible to DIY on waist length, layered hair. I would like to get my hair to a cool toned brown, I think it was called mushroom brown a couple of years back when it was 'on trend'. I'm not sure what shade of toner I should use, as it looks like it might have some kind of warmth to it, even though it is a cool toned brown. Should I stay away from anything ash/green based? Or, would a splash of something like Shades EQ VRO be a good addition to an ash toner?
Thanks for watching! I would say that a “mushroom” shade is cool (all colour is incredibly subjective) - so perhaps start with something simple, such as 7N on its own - you could add a little 7NA…all suggested without seeing your hair. And well done for the home balayage! 👨🏻🙏🏻🧡
Can we add that blue automatically into the color to begin with? So then maybe we won't have to tone it, or use as much...?? at the end? I have done that before. I was just wondering if you suggest doing it seperate. Thank you for your videos!!!!
I did a diy job, using 7N as recommended by a pro, over my extremely white/gray hair. Not salt n pepper. More like white. I was tired of white. I used to use 3N. Wanted a 7. Its gold. Hot gold. I was then told to go over it with 20Vol and 7A. I am not doing it until I know what on earth will happen. And then what am I supposed to so with regrowth? This is why I think I might go toward box which is probably already a mix of NA or or NG?
Biggest, take away I don't know there are many! I have been watching your videos non-stop as I'm trying to save money at the salon. I did a bleach wash on my hair with a fairly mild bleach cream and I have orange....and I want to tone it and have some warmth, but I'm concerned about my Gray roots. Should I use a different developer on those or a different toner altogether? Ideally I would like the silver in my grays to shine through the gold and give it dimension
Awww, so glad it was helpful, thanks for watching. Yes, you would need to treat the “zones” differently - the roots with something to add depth…and the “orange” mids/ends to tone. I’ll be honest, it’s a very tricky thing to get a good result from yourself as it’s so nuanced.
@@SherryYoung-fg3spSorry, I can’t give out very specific, individual formulas…there’s so much to it to do so remotely. There are many other toning videos on my channel.
@@SherryYoung-fg3sp There’s a playlist on “hair colour theory”, that might be helpful..? You’re most welcome, it’s why I started my channel and it will always be a priority.
The toner explanation was very helpful. I’ve have some grey at the crown and my natural colour underneath which is a 7/6. I colour the root for grey coverage with a 8-7 mix as the 8 tends to give too much brassiness. But as it becomes more grey obviously the contrast is greater on re growth. Would you recommend using 9/8 mix and then toning with the colours at the start then to reduce the orange? p.s. I have blonder ends like balayage
do you know the recommended ratios for Colour Touch Special mix please - would it be the rule of 11 like the KP s.mixes or are the CT s.mixes weaker. I found this online and I wondered if it was accurate - Boost: Intensify and shade Eg. 20g COLOR TOUCH shade + 10g 0/56 + 60g 1.9%/4% Correct: Neutralize unwanted warmth 40g COLOR TOUCH shade + 5g 0/68 + 90g 1.9%/4%
If that’s from the Wella/Color Touch user guide online, that’s the guideline. I don’t use the special mixes much as I find CT to be warm/cool enough on its own as it’s quite opaque.
great info! So if my client wants to be level 8 with no warmth, could I lighten her to a level 9-91/2 then tone with 8N? and what are the the colors on the color wheel on either side of the green? Looks like turquoise and chartreuse! Thank you
Thank you! You sure could…that would be very cool though - there are many SEQG videos on my channel, all in a playlist…and many other toning videos. They are secondary tints of the main colours that cancel - if you have a Google there is all manner of color wheels out there, I use a straightforward one as we don’t need to over complicate it. Thanks for watching.
That would be 9/96 - although it does have some blue in it - one of the reasons I don’t use a lot of Color Touch to tone, there’s no pure violet tone. 9/16 is ash/violet…not the best on gold. You can find the Wella pigment chart online.
Hi there. I’m afraid I can’t give out specific, individual toner formula…what you see as “platinum” might not be what I see. That said there are loads of videos (and I mean loads) on here that have formulas for a level 10 - have a scroll through, you’ll find what you’re looking for.
I would never tone with a higher volume of peroxide - I only ever use a demi permanent and they (generally) have their own developers that are lower in volume. Also - a higher volume will take the pigment further into the hair…which could make it appear darker…
Hey Craig👋🏻 if I, as a natural level 6/7 light brown who wants to be level 8 blonde, use a permanent colour no 8 with blue/violet undertones (+vol 20) would that counteract the orange tones or be a hot mess? 😅
Hi there, thanks for watching. So you’ve got the principle, only it’s a little different when you’re lifting hair - you need to think of the warmth in your hair at the natural level - 6/7…which would be a deeper orange. Therefore (this is all without seeing your hair, so you’ll have to make that final call) you need more blue (which brands have) to get a more neutral result - remembering that blue is a very powerful pigment, so it might not look quite as light as an 8 when dry…cool tones absorb light. Good luck, let me know how you get on. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Love your swatch tests! I My layman curiosity was wondering why you didn't test with close as possible tones. Like 8n+8vb was used, but just 10n was used with no 10v or 10t or 10p to help simulate the VB aspect of the level 8 tone. Maybe it's irrelevant? It would be interesting to see that closer (?) comparison! ... Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge and in such a clear fun way!
Hi Christa. I chose the have the “on the level” formula be cooler as I have another video on here (just swatching, less in depth share) where they are the same tone just deeper. When I plan out content I always, always have both hair pro’s and consumers in mind, by showing the cooler formula as the “on the level” one hopefully it’ll help hair pro’s who really find it a challenge, (I know it has already which is great!) whilst the more general selection info is for everyone. Thanks for watching 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
My understanding why the 10n did have anything else added to help simulate the VB aspect was because the 10N already has a VB undertone and the 8N does not. I could be wrong though lol
@Thatonegirl_175 Good guess but no, the N’s all have the soft violet/blue tone - I kept the lighter one just to N as I already have a video comparing 2 N formulas, on and off level. When I plan my content I think of both hair pro’s and peeps at home, this comparison was aimed more towards a hair pro….with the entire video being for either.

I have dark brown hair that ALWAYS gets gold/ orange roots no matter what brand color I use. My roots are gray from age, but the rest of my hair is still brown. Can you offer any advice on how to tone this? Thanks!
That’s the warmth in your natural base being exposed by the hair colour - a cool blue/violet helps with that shade of warmth….its all in the video. Thanks for watching.
I really hope you see this... I have a question about "the cooler the formula the darker it will be the warmer the formula the brighter it will look" my question is if your trying to get from platinum blonde to that icy white silver color... What is the best way to go? Can you tone it to that color or do you dye it that color?
In my opinion, (all colour is subjective and it why it makes it tricky for me to answer specific formula questions) platinum and “icy” are pretty much the same shades… I would always use a demi permanent toner to create those results. There are many, many videos here on my channel that contain info on both.
You explaining skills very good please can you explain about backgrounds of colors (it’s mentioned on any book of color line it grey to black ,black , brown to tan ) I still not understand how we use them when we use color formulas thank you
Thank you, I have many videos on here that go into “backgrounds”, check out my Shades EQ Gloss playlist. Different colour houses often have slight variations, so it’s impossible for my to make a general video. Thanks for watching.
There is something that's always confused me, and hopefully you can help. If certain levels have certain pigments, that makes plenty of sense to me. Why would Shades EQ Make like.... 10T, or 9B then? There is no orange at level 10 or 9? And 10 or 9 won't work on level 7? I feel like I'm missing something. :)
The “series” exists at different levels so we can all be as creative as possible. You might not want to cancel orange out at a level 9, you might want a blue reflect…of you might want to neutralise some of the warmth and tone off level.
I'm a little late! But I have a question. My hair is naturally blonde (I would say an 8 or 9). It has very warm undertones, more of a gold colour. Does toner work on naturally blonde hair to make it cooler or is it only effective on bleached hair? I tried to take out some yellow tones with purple shampoo but I feel like it does nothing to natural hair (in comparison to my ends, that have been bleached before)....so how about toner? Could it make my natual warm blond cooler without me having to bleach it? Thank you so much for your videos and for your time! I appreciate it❤
You’re not late at all! My videos are here for ever for you all… Toner will work to take warmth out of natural hair for sure - just be aware that if you’re a level 8, the formula will have to be an 8 and the result will look like a 7. Cooling down any hair makes it look darker.
Hello! Great video! If you want to keep some warmth (not be dark) but not it be orange/brass. Would you go one level higher than the level you have or on the level and make the toner ash? For example, if the highlight is a level 8 but you want to be light without much orange, would you use a level 7, 8 or 9? I ask because I want to touch up my 2 month old highlight that's more orange now. Thank you!!
Hiya! Thank you! It’s impossible for me to answer specifically - I can’t see your hair and what think is “keep some warmth”, won’t be what I think… That said, yes, that’s how I would approach it to start with…your result will be impacted by how porous your hair is and what you use etc etc. Thanks for watching.
@@theworldofcraig Thanks for the response! So just to clarify, if you use the same color toner as the hair level, it keeps it pretty much the same but removes a little of the orange/brass depending on the color you choose. If the toner level is higher than the hair color, it wouldn't do anything really. If the toner level is lower than the hair, you go more cool and darker. Is that correct?
@@christiey9308 No problem. It’s very, very hard for me to give you a specific remotely as there are many factors - you’ve got the principle. Toning “on the level” will make it look darker…toning anything to look cooler will do that.
What if you have to tone brassy base hair with level 10 highlights applied over??? I have a natural level 4 client -we lighten the base to a level 8 and I apply level 10 bleach highlights over it. But when I try to tone down the brassy level 8 it affects the highlights.
Unfortunately that’s a tricky one - you’re effectively dealing with 2 canvases and need to explain the theory to the client, (in a way they can understand) to manage their result expectations. My personal solution would be to drop the base down over time to a level 7 - that way it wouldn’t expose so much warmth. A tricky one for sure.
Hey I’m new to the channel and this video was helpful! I am not a professional whatsoever. Naturally, i am a level 8 (light blonde) but a few months ago I dyed my hair black (and i deeply regret it 😭). I tried using a hair color remover (color oops, it was recommended by a friend). And it took off the black however my hair is now a orangish brownish color. Is it possible for me to go back to my natural color (level 8 light blonde) and if so, how would I go about doing that?
Hi there, thanks for watching, I’m glad the video was helpful. So that’s a BIG question - and I’m afraid the simple answer is no, as you’ve made it darker, then lightened it exposing warmth, you’ll have to be deeper to “cancel” out what’s been “exposed”. I do go into it in depth in many of my other video here on my channel. Thanks for watching.
Hi Craig. Do you tone before or after coloring? I used color remover to get really dark brown dye out of my hair. My roots turned bright orange with a little gold, and my mid shaft is orangey brown. Any tips to get it to a natural med brown color? I don’t mind a bit of warmth. Thanks!
Hi there. Toning is colouring as such. Tricky for me to give you formula advice remotely - you’ll need to deal with each area with a different mix, one formula won’t tone every shade.
@@theworldofcraig ok cool thank you!! Also one last question, I just got my highlights retouched and those new highlights at the top of my head are ashy. But the bottom of my hair is golden. I want to have a cohesive golden look. So I get a gloss to try to add warm to the top of my head? Thank you so much for your time!
@@CourtneyMartin-em1iq You’re welcome. I’m afraid I can’t make that call without seeing your hair in person but in principle yes. There’s loads of toning videos here on my channel.
Thank you! That’s such a big question - how cool is as cool as you want…? What’s the canvas like…? Personally I like my results to be reflective, to much cool tone and it won’t be.
Thank you and thanks for watching. That’s the point of the video - if you want to neutralise all the warmth you tone ON the level or below…toning above will not give a “cool” result.
I just want to know I died my hair violet brown 5.222 Now it get dark orange so which toner best I use ?! I have 6.11 matt dark blonde Can I add blue to it and how much the ratio please ?
HELP! I dyed my hair 3 days ago Schwarzkopf Mahogany Red (4.3) it is TOO BRIGHT RED!! I realize I can't color it again. So i decided to buy L'Oreal Le Color One Step Toning Hair Gloss in Rich Brunette. Do you think this will calm down the Red?
@theworldofcraig Well, my friend, I did it!! I put the rich brunette toning gloss over the red hair dye, and it worked!!! It's now more of a Cowboy Red (it needed that brown) than SCARY CLOWN!!! LOLOL!
Let's say you have those same swatches with that starting color (a strawberry blonde is what it looks like to me) how would you tone that to appear brown without canceling out all the warmth? Say you don't want cool at all but a nice warm brown.
There is another video here on my channel about picking the perfect toner formula, it’s a recent video, that should help. It’s pretty straight forward if you want to keep warmth…
@theworldofcraig Based on this video, my guess for a first test would be 8N for keeping the warmth of the strawberry blonde but getting to brown, maybe 7N. Do you think that's a good guess? (I've already watched your other video, btw) I want a starting point for testing on strawberry blonde for a brown color but keeping the warmth.
Very informative! I watched another video that you can tone and brighten your color with hi-lift ash dye but with only 20vol developer. What's your opinion on this? Do you find it damaging?
Thank you…and thanks for watching. I would never tone with anything (very occasionally tint and pastel developer) other than demi permanent, I just don’t want or need (if you’ve lifted light enough) that level of deposit…and yes, I don’t use high lift at all, so much ammonia.
Oh I just love you! Here’s a conundrum 😂. I’m naturally strawberry blonde (yellow). I mix box dye 2/3rds light auburn (clariol 6R) with 1/3rd light ASH blonde (clairol 9A) and I get quite a nice result. Auburn red, but toned down. But salons tell me I shouldn’t be mixing red with ash, as they cancel each other out. But I think that’s what I’m trying to do (??🤔). Red on its own is too screaming for me. Is there another way? Am I going at this from the wrong angle? Adoring hug 🤗 xx
Awww, thank you, that’s very kind…and lovely. No no, you’re doing exactly what you should be - different tones in one bowl don’t “cancel each other out”, think of it as a matter balance…and the KEY is that you get a great result. GO YOU! You are doing exactly what you should be. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Thank you for sharing your knowledge ! Question, so using say 6N Shades, going to add half clear so the 6N not so dark. That will not make it so dark on hair ?
I can't find your email....I believe I am naturally a level 5 and level 4 is too dark, often washing me out. I’ve heard you say, find your natural shade then where you want to go (I’d like to go consistently a level 5). So my thoughts were with all of the red/orange that I shouldn’t have to fill to go one level darker and my thoughts were to mix some 06Nch with a tad of 06GN, divide into sections as you’ve shown in videos, then start in back quadrants first, small sections at a time, carefully covering back and front of each, then do front roots ½” to ¾”? let all of that sit for ______ many mins THEN cover midshafts and ends for remaining time? If this is not a good plan, please direct me to a video to follow (and any recommendations on my color using what I have would be appreciated). here is what I have...06GN EQ Gloss, 05N EQ Gloss, 06Nch Bonder Inside, 0 Clear Bonder EQ Gloss, 05GB Color Gel Lacquer, Pulp Riot 5-5 Perm Color, 8A ChiIONIC Shine Shades Liquid Color. I can email you pics but can't find an email.
Hi Emma, thanks for watching. Please don’t send pics - it’s impossible for me to give out custom personalised formulas remotely and photos aren’t a good representation of hair “in person”. I’m not sure what question you’re asking - what I will say is that Shades EQ Gloss is a lot collier than people generally think, so perhaps go in with an N on its own first.

Ya, let's do that "lazy" perm....I think I'm excited about the possibility of standing behind a chair again. thank YOU!
I do have Shades EQ Gloss specific videos in the playlist (it’s simply called Shades EQ Gloss) that go over it - the background is what’s “behind” the tones. For example - the NB’s have a brown to tan background….the V’s have no background, they are pure violet, that’s what makes them so good at seeing off yellow…the P’s have a grey background, which is why they can overpower a very light canvas. Thanks for watching.
That’s a BIG question and I can’t give out specific, individual formulas without knowing more/seeing your hair, there’s so much to it. There are many other toning videos here on my channel - a couple deal with orange warmth…and there are a few with warm formulas in too.
Hi Craig. This might be a tricky one lol. I was originally a level 3 ish, I lightened my hair to a level 5 brown, and them added level 8/9 highlights, the issue I have now is that the brown is now fading out orangey, so how do I tone my brown to a neutral brown again without destroying my level 8/9 highlights? Is it even possible? Thank you so much. X
Hi there. I get questions like this quite a lot and you’ve answered it yourself, it’s a tricky one. Dealing with multiple levels is always a compromise - you may have to just get used to the warmth I’m afraid.
Love this video!!! 💝 I’m growing out my salt and pepper (level 4 cool)But for years have coloured it level 5 brown. It’s now faded to a brassy 5 (previously highlighted) Going to neutralise only the brassy bits 🙏🏽 Using a level 5 (n/b)
Great video!!! Thank you!!! Please can you explain how to fill the hair when there is 75% grey and you want to achieve light blonde or dark blond….👋🤩🫶🏻🥰
Thank you! You’re welcome, thanks for watching. I’m not sure what you mean by “fill”? If I’m colouring grey hair I would use permanent colour or a cream based demi permanent like Color Touch…unless someone wants a very translucent result, then I might use Shades EQ Gloss - there are many videos that go over the different options here on my channel.
I had hair highlight and I got level 7. my client wants a toner chocolate brown red. I put in her shade eq 7cb and 7g. color didn't come as it I want for her can you plz help me out I want to fix her toner actually before the toner the bleach hair was looking so nice. can you tell me how to tone down little bit. I would be great
Thanks for watching. There’s an entire toning playlist here on my channel - I’m afraid I can’t give out specific individual toner advice, there’s just way too much to it.
Thank you for all the great advice and for going so in detail!! Any recommendation for what volume developer to buy? I have heard anywhere from 6 to 10 volume is best for toning is that true?
You’re most welcome, thanks for watching, I’m glad it was helpful. Most Demi permanent (the only type of hair colour I tone with) colour lines have a designated developer. I would always recommend using what goes with that particular line.
@@theworldofcraig thank you for the fast response!!!🙏 I am also having a little trouble deciding if I need a level 6 or 7 toner. I have naturally dark brown hair and recently got a balayage and the bottom of my hair is very light but the top is more dark. But overall it’s very yellow/gold which is not too flattering on me. Any recommendations?

Hi! First of all sorry for the thesis abstract I’m about to write, so I understand very little of this kinda thing, my hair was dark brown, like Dua lipa kinda dark, almost black, when I first colored it I asked for a chocolate brown, and a layered cut and I loved it, the second time I went, me and the hairdresser decided going a bit lighter I guess it was like a 7 not more I think, right away I felt my hair had this orange tint to it but I didn’t mind it much but by the end of summer i was almost blonde but like orangey blonde that’s what people would tell me, hairdressers keep telling me it’s bc my hair tends to “open” a lot, I’m translating their words from Portuguese so maybe it doesn’t make a lot of sense and I’m sorry for that, anyhow since then I’ve dyed it three times and I always get out of the saloon with my dark brown hair looking like it was before I’ve first dyed it sometimes even a little bit darker that that too but somehow two/three months in and I’m back with the orange tones and it’s awful, rn at third time is not as orange as it was but I still have them and I hate it, it’s especially on the surface of the hair, I’m trying a new salon again soon, what can i ask in the saloon so I can achieve my original color kinda permanently? Last time I even asked to only color my mids and ends bc I don’t want to color my untouched new hair growth, I just wish it would stick so I can stop colouring and focus completely on controlling the damage, also I wanna mention I use the L’Oréal professional blue toner which I think doesn’t do much different and I used olaplex, redken, L’Oréal professional and even Kérastase shampoos and masks options that are safe for colored hair, yet it’s still so damaged. I also don’t style my hair the only heat it receives is from the blow dryer after showering and I don’t use the hottest option either, I feel like I’ve done everything from cutting a good amount of it to turned it into a blunt cut from oiling my scalp, using repairing treatments, silk pillowscases, soft brushing 😭 could you give some of your thoughts?
Hi! I’m afraid it’s really tricky for me to give any specific individual advice remotely, there’s always so much to it. Blue is the opposite of orange but how much is needed is always down to the tone of the hair at that time - too much and the hair will be very dark. Thanks for watching.
I’d have to watch the video back to check (I make a lot of content!) and it’s bedtime. I would suggest a 1:1 mix of the 2 shades first, the VB’s are very pigmented. Whatever your mix with SEQG it’s always 1:1 with Processing Solution.

Tone on level or it won't do much.
@heatherhowe351 It depends what you want from the result, I often tone “off level”…but if you want to neutralise warmth, yes.
I'm not sure which toner to choose if I want to keep most of my level 7 warmth? If I want to tone out a just bit of brassiness...how do I proceed?

OMG You just saved me with this video. I want to tone the level 7 orange/gold/yellow but I do want to keep some brightness. So mixing a level 7 with blue/violet and level 7 neutral should give me the results I need. Ive seen so many videos about toning and yours is BY FAR THE BEST VIDEO at explaining. Thank you.

Hi Craig, a big fat thank you for doing this video. I did learn a lot about toning on the level through your previous videos, but this goes another level deeper, to help me find the correct toner on a level 7 that neutralizes the color, which is so great. And your way of teaching is so inspirational 🤩!

Thank you for posting this video :) ! I just bleached my wig a 2nd time and it has lifted to a level 9 or so all over with a bright yellow tone. Great. Thanks for watching.
You sure can - that is a different thing though.
This video is really focused on toning hair that’s been lightened and is brassy. Thanks for watching.

Impossible for me to tell you remotely what result you’d get I’m afraid - there are just to many factors involved.
I will add...some of it lightened to a level 9..perhaps 20% of the hair..
@@SherryYoung-fg3spSorry, I can’t give out very specific, individual formulas…there’s so much to it to do so remotely. There are many other toning videos on my channel.
I think I have watched every toning one you have done! Thank you so much for helping us be beautiful!
That’s great, glad it helped. It’s tricky for me to make that call remotely but yes, you could do that.
do you know the recommended ratios for Colour Touch Special mix please - would it be the rule of 11 like the KP s.mixes or are the CT s.mixes weaker. I found this online and I wondered if it was accurate -
Boost: Intensify and shade Eg. 20g COLOR TOUCH shade + 10g 0/56 + 60g 1.9%/4%
Correct: Neutralize unwanted warmth 40g COLOR TOUCH shade + 5g 0/68 + 90g 1.9%/4%
In Wella, which has more or a neutralising effect on yellow tones - a 9/16 or a 9/96.
9/96 appears more violet but 9/16 appears to be more pigmented
That would be 9/96 - although it does have some blue in it - one of the reasons I don’t use a lot of Color Touch to tone, there’s no pure violet tone. 9/16 is ash/violet…not the best on gold. You can find the Wella pigment chart online.
You are amazing and your explanations are also great. 🤩
So much kindness, thank you.
Hello. I'm a level 10 what toner and brand do you suggest for me to get the platinum color like your model, please?
Hi there. I’m afraid I can’t give out specific, individual toner formula…what you see as “platinum” might not be what I see. That said there are loads of videos (and I mean loads) on here that have formulas for a level 10 - have a scroll through, you’ll find what you’re looking for.
Thanks A bunch! Going to watch❤
Your videos are a Godsend 🎉
👨🏼🙏🏻✨
On the second swatch, why not 8vb only? Tks❤ why adding 8n?
The VB’s are very pigmented and deposit a lot of cool tone - I almost always mix them.
I've seen videos where they tone using 15 Vol to stop the hair looking too dark when using cool tones. What do you think of this? Thanks.
@@theworldofcraig Thank you ❤️
Love your swatch tests!
Did not*
@Thatonegirl_175 Good guess but no, the N’s all have the soft violet/blue tone - I kept the lighter one just to N as I already have a video comparing 2 N formulas, on and off level.
When I plan my content I think of both hair pro’s and peeps at home, this comparison was aimed more towards a hair pro….with the entire video being for either.

Hi! I want to tone my hair at home. The numbers after the slash are from the color wheel, right? What number is blue? Thanks.
Hi, all the brands have slightly different tonal values, so I would check online for whatever brands colour chart you’re using.
Yes Craig our 007, information I needed to stop me looking like a walking Dorito crisp😅 from a Brummie fan

I have a video in the toning playlist that is all about blondes! 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Love your videos they have helped me a lot ❤❤❤

I really hope you see this... I have a question about "the cooler the formula the darker it will be the warmer the formula the brighter it will look" my question is if your trying to get from platinum blonde to that icy white silver color... What is the best way to go? Can you tone it to that color or do you dye it that color?
In my opinion, (all colour is subjective and it why it makes it tricky for me to answer specific formula questions) platinum and “icy” are pretty much the same shades…
I would always use a demi permanent toner to create those results. There are many, many videos here on my channel that contain info on both.
How can I cancel my orange highlights but want to stay on the warm side, not cool? Do I go 2 numbers up on the toner ? Thank you! ❤
There’s quite a lot to your question, it’s so tricky to answer it remotely - all you need is in the videos in my toning playlist.
@@theworldofcraig Ah okay, thanks very much! :)
My videos are here for ever for you all…
Toner will work to take warmth out of natural hair for sure - just be aware that if you’re a level 8, the formula will have to be an 8 and the result will look like a 7. Cooling down any hair makes it look darker.
Thank you so much for your help! 🫶🏻
Thank you!!
Hiya! Thank you! It’s impossible for me to answer specifically - I can’t see your hair and what think is “keep some warmth”, won’t be what I think…
That said, yes, that’s how I would approach it to start with…your result will be impacted by how porous your hair is and what you use etc etc.
@@theworldofcraig Thanks so much!!
I’m not seeing any volume developer mixed with the toners used. Do I need a developer for this to work on my orange red hair?
The majority of Demi permanent hair colours have their own designated developers.
So to clarify, if I want to keep some warmth in my hair, I should tone above the level of my hair?
That is one way of doing it for sure.
What if you have highlights - do you tone to that level?
It depends on whether you want to cancel all the warmth but yes if that’s the case.
Great video! No if you don't wanna see any warmth just cool would you put straight ash blue on it or add a neutral with it?
Thank you! That’s such a big question - how cool is as cool as you want…? What’s the canvas like…? Personally I like my results to be reflective, to much cool tone and it won’t be.
Love the results on both but i thought we have to tone to the color level? A bit confused about being level 7/8 and tone to a level 10N?
Thank you and thanks for watching.
That’s the point of the video - if you want to neutralise all the warmth you tone ON the level or below…toning above will not give a “cool” result.
So i box dyed my own gray hair to a level 2. Hated it! $955.00,4 months later its a level 10. Im going back to my beloved, much missed gray!!
So like you’ve got it sorted! Thanks for watching.
Will a toner permanently alter virgin hair or expose warmth?
It depends on a few factors - I would suggest watching my “Why I don’t use permanent hair colour to tone” video. It’s all in there.
I just want to know I died my hair violet brown 5.222
Now it get dark orange so which toner best I use ?! I have 6.11 matt dark blonde
Can I add blue to it and how much the ratio please ?
It’s all in the videos - I can’t give remote formula advice.
It’s impossible for me to give you specific advice remotely but that might take the “edge” off of it…the red will be tricky to tone down I’m afraid.
@@theworldofcraig Thank you for responding.. I APPRECIATE YOU!
@sweetyface4672 You’re most welcome! 👨🏼🙏🏻✅
@theworldofcraig Well, my friend, I did it!! I put the rich brunette toning gloss over the red hair dye, and it worked!!! It's now more of a Cowboy Red (it needed that brown) than SCARY CLOWN!!! LOLOL!
Thanks! I was seeking the same solution, and now I have it! 😊

(I've already watched your other video, btw)
I want a starting point for testing on strawberry blonde for a brown color but keeping the warmth.
@@heatherb918You’re on the right track, I would always go in with an N first if I’m at unsure….

Question, so using say 6N Shades, going to add half clear so the 6N not so dark. That will not make it so dark on hair ?
You’re welcome, thanks for watching.
Yes, that will “spread out” the tone, so the result will appear lighter than just 6N.
No tax on tips. LOL I've been retired for 9 years. I'm an artis and although I do have a license...i remember the first time I painted someone's hair. I didn't know it was a thing. What is it Bolyage? lol...went a whole career can't spell it! It just made sense to me, and I used cotton to separate the strands! hahahaha. The suff we did back in the day. I like your attitude about, "You can't have it both ways..." I always fell into the trap of being a pleaser at the expense of losing money. But after a while I be like, decide...Love your channel. I'm "brushing up" on the current trends in products...I also really loved cutting and knew that someday someone would reinvent the mullet! I see many boys looking like Patrick Swayze with a Perm. Ya, let's do that "lazy" perm....I think I'm excited about the possibility of standing behind a chair again. thank YOU!
I’m so glad I can help you be excited about hair. Thanks for watching and sharing your hair history.
What dies the "background" tone mean in redken color shades
I do have Shades EQ Gloss specific videos in the playlist (it’s simply called Shades EQ Gloss) that go over it - the background is what’s “behind” the tones.
For example - the NB’s have a brown to tan background….the V’s have no background, they are pure violet, that’s what makes them so good at seeing off yellow…the P’s have a grey background, which is why they can overpower a very light canvas.
Thanks for watching.
Ok i got hair level 5 with orande undertones.Which toner for warmer colours and which toner for colder.Still confused 😬
That’s a BIG question and I can’t give out specific, individual formulas without knowing more/seeing your hair, there’s so much to it.
There are many other toning videos here on my channel - a couple deal with orange warmth…and there are a few with warm formulas in too.
Would you recommend the same thing for natural blondes (level 8-9 with a bit of 7 mixed in) who want to go platinum blonde?
Thanks for watching. I’m not entirely sure I understand the question…?
Consider a High lift neutral color, which will lift you the rest of the way to platinum and deposit some pigment to tone the blonde.
Hi Craig if I want to start practicing on swatches where can I buy them from? X
Hi Michelle, think I forgot to link them in the description but they are from Pivot Point…linked all over the place on here. I always buy white ones.
Ok, I thought that may be the case. Being naturally so dark is so limiting.
Thank you for help x
Love this video!!! 💝
I’m growing out my salt and pepper (level 4 cool)But for years have coloured it level 5 brown.
It’s now faded to a brassy 5 (previously highlighted)
Going to neutralise only the brassy bits 🙏🏽
Using a level 5 (n/b)
Awww, that’s great, so glad it helped. Thanks for watching and please let me know how you get on. 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
Thank you! ❤
You’re most welcome, thanks for watching! 👨🏻🙏🏻✨
@@ericasantiesteban2204I’m afraid I can’t give out specific, individual formula suggestions remotely, there’s just too much to it - my toning videos have all the info.
(1) part 8N + (2) 8VB + (3) processing solution? is that correct?
I’d have to watch the video back to check (I make a lot of content!) and it’s bedtime. I would suggest a 1:1 mix of the 2 shades first, the VB’s are very pigmented. Whatever your mix with SEQG it’s always 1:1 with Processing Solution.
