so many of you have asked recently whether I would recommend toning with a permanent hair color...?
A lot of think the toner will last longer or that you'll get a better result than using a demi permanent product.
In the 37 years I've been a hair stylist and done hair colour, I've never used permanent color to tone.
There are a few reasons, find them ALL in the video.
Along with some hair science and of course, my recommendations to get you the best results, whether you colour your own hair at home or you see clients.
From ME to YOU, for FREE...so that EVERYONE can have the BEST hair!

Hi all, thanks for watching! What’s your BIGGEST take away from this week’s video…? It would be great to have your thoughts, thank you. 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
Loved the analogies used as from a regular Jane I do not come from a hair professional background. Very easily understood and the differences of the types of colour dyes available and how they are deposited in the hair shaft
@@samcooper6115I’m so glad it was all understandable, I plan it out so that everyone can take something from it.
Thanks again Sam 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
OMG! I’ve been searching answers for this exact question and this is the clearest explanation I’ve ever heard! Thank you! I’m now one of your followers.❤
Thank you, that’s made my day, I’m so chuffed it was helpful. Thanks for watching 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
So simple and straightforward, love your videos, i llearn so much!
Thank you so much, that’s made my day! Really appreciate your support. 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
Craig, you’re hilarious!! LOL I love your intro!
Thank you…some time it takes a few goes, ha.
I bleach to a level 10 and I tone by using a 20 volume with a dash of permanent hair die black level 1. I leave it on for 2-5 minutes and the result is snow white platinum. Seriously.
We used to call that a black “drop” (although we did it with demi) and yes it can create great results but it wouldn’t be something I’d educate on, there’s way too much room for interpretation. Thanks for watching and sharing.
Wów Craig, this information is gold! Very well and clearly explained, so thank you so much for that x
Om my goodness, so happy the video was helpful, thanks for watching and taking the time to be kind. 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
Thanks so much!
Thank you for watching! 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
You mind reader! My job for tonight was to research toners so was going to go through your playlist, but you’ve made the exact video I needed! ❤ I was about to buy some more Schwartzkopf Igora Silverwhites in grey lilac as that’s what I always used the last time I had blonde bits and adored the colour (with 20vol, no less). But since learning so much about colour lately (largely thanks to you), I looked at an old tube I had and saw that it was a permanent colour. I just thought toner was toner! I didn’t realise it was so complex, silly me! So now I have to find a demi perm colour that looks the same. I did recently panic-buy the Bleach London Lavender Grey toner, but looking at the box, it says it’s a semi-permanent colour… but it has developer with it (no idea what vol) 🤔 The more I research, the more questions I end up with! 😂
Thanks for predicting that I needed this exact kind of help! 😁
There is nothing silly about you! Thank you so much for your kind words and all your support, really thrilled the video was helpful.
The Bleach London colour you have is a Demi, I’ve used a few of them and they are great, if quite pigmented…they call them “semi” but they are slightly oxidative.
👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
Great explanation! I loved the tinted moisturiser analogy 💖
Thank you! So glad it was helpful, thanks for watching. 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
Hi from Destin Florida. I love your videos. I get so much great information from you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge😊

Ohh love your vids again and again I have changed to shadezQ from old school hairdressing bleach then add toner with 10vol or 1.5 totally understand what your saying it’s just building confidence with shadzQ ohh so much learning still at near 55 but I love Hair ! And love your channel Thankyou Craig love your brightnesss and your shirt x ❤
That’s great, so glad they help and thanks for watching.
Confidence through knowledge sure is a powerful thing! 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
There was definitely a lot learned in this video about toners!! When i get down to when i can purchase my bleach, I'll brush up on this again fs!!! I'm still going to look though your Playlist and see if there are some that are more specific to what i want to do. Love your videos bc it feels like a one on one consultation where you are so lighthearted but still professional. Thank you for being here and keeping it real but fun❤❤❤❤🎉🎉!
I’m so glad it was helpful, thanks for watching.
They’ll be several on my channel I’m sure, I often feel that I’m constantly telling folks about videos and where they are as there’s so much on here now.
Thanks for the kind words…that’s exactly how I want folks to feel when watching…as that’s exactly how I am! 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
A+ explanation Craig! Also I forgot to add in my previous comments I do a Redken ABC treatment to lower the ph back down after using the alkaline toner.
Thank you! That’s a great line, the Citric Acid does a great job…you’ll enjoy next week’s video, that’s all I’ll say for now, ha. Thanks for watching 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
Love our Craig 007❤ from your Brummie Fan.
Yes really well explained hun
Thanks Sam…and thanks for watching 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
Very informative and helpful video. I definitely agree with you Wella Illumina is a great and beautiful product. 🥰😍
Thank you and thanks for watching. It is a great formula. 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
Your channel is a breath of fresh air! Do you have a salon in London? I've just been to a local salon and asked for a specific hair colour and was told it would never work on my hair but wasn't given any reason. I'm not convinced and would love a second opinion
Thank you, so glad you’re enjoying it! I see clients from a salon I “rent a chair” in, in W1. You can DM me over on Instagram - craigsworldofhair - for more details.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you, I will 😊
Hello! I’m coming to the UK soon and was wondering if you’re accepting new clients. Would love to get my hair coloured by you as the roots were accidentally dyed darker :)
Hiya! Cool, you can DM on Instagram for details. It’s linked in every description on here.
Hi thanks for a great video. I use colour touch for toning mostly. But get stuck on the numbering system, for example if hair is bleached and its uneven some bits yellow (banana colour) and some darker yellow (slight orange) how do I get it even with a toner? And if Im using 9/86 for example, what ratio of tone is 8 or 6? Is it an equal 1/3rd? Get so mixed up on the tones of colours.
Also have you done any videos on how to get rid of banding on full head colours dark and light haired, I always seem to get this when people go in the sun etc.
Bit of a long comment but thanks for these videos, very helpfull.
Im a mobile hairdresser also so struggle with being cost effective. As most videos always mix 2 or 3 colours together and its just to costly for me.
Hi there, thank you, glad you found it helpful.
So I wouldn’t overthink the tonal percentage - just remember that the first number (after the /) is the primary tone, the next secondary.
You always need to formulate in the deepest part of lift to “cancel” out the tone effectively.
There is an entire playlist of toning videos here on my channel and also one titled “hair colour theory”, that might be helpful.
I feel toning highlights with shades EQ, also, even tho slight, alters my base/natural pieces. Do you agree Craig? I’m a level 7 dirty blonde always struggling with orangey tones. I feel like if I just want a few highlights, I should try a Hi-Lift. (To avoid putting toner all over.).
No, it really doesn’t shift a base, as long as you’re using Processing Solution and developing at room temp..?
I never use high-lift, it just doesn’t do it for me…and if you’re used to the translucency of bleach, neither will you be.
How about toning with a direct dye…?
Please, make a video toning with Wella Illumina 🙏
Thanks for watching - there is already one here on my channel, from a way back, a bleach out with a violet face frame.
Being upfront and honest, I doubt I’ll make any more with Illumina, it’s a lovely product but there are things I prefer.
Hi thank u for the video. Should I just use Demi permanent color in the level I want my color to be. My hair is at level 7/8 but just bleached so should I use 7/8 color?
Hi there, you’re most welcome, thanks for watching.
I do have an entire playlist on toning here on my channel - there are many factors that go into choosing a formula level, so it’s hard for me to help specifically remotely.
What would you do if you have grey hair , white after lifting but not clearly blonde , and you want to do a shadow root level 8? ❤
There are quite a few shadow rooting tutorials here on my channel - check out the “tutorial” playlist. Thanks for watching. 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
Hi craig,,,i loved ur demonstration… what if here in my country we have no demi’s or semi permanent dyes,,and am left with only permanent hair dye option to tone my hair,,,which is pretty much of orangy yellow roots,,,what can i do..also i feel that my hair alkaline has changed by aging and it never reaches level 9.5 or 10..can u help me out please 🙏
Hi Sam, thank you, so glad you enjoyed it.
Hmmm, perhaps online…? I’d be flabbergasted if there were no demi’s at all, most brands have at least one.
You could mix a permanent with 5volume but I wouldn’t advise it if you have any natural at all - it might lift it slightly.
There’s an entire playlist on how to pick a formula here on my channel. Thanks for watching 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
I would like to know more about wella illumina and also p.H...so demanding, aren't I?
That’s great, always good to have ideas on what folks want to see. I could do a video on pH for sure….I’ve featured Illumina on my channel previously but probably won’t again, I use other products I prefer.
Hi Craig. I’ve always been a fan of shades eq but recently I don’t know if the formula has changed but shades isn’t shading 😂. It’s washing out very very quickly. I’ve seen other saying this also. I wondered if you had noticed this?
Hi Lizzy, thanks for watching. I’ve not noticed any difference…but then I am a dry hair/20 minute process human.
I have been searching for days about covering gray hair witv demi permanent. A lot of hair dressers talking about the cons on social media yet my hair dresser is still on another planet 🙃 . So I decided to do it my self. Can you recommend a formula for hair level 6 (ashy) .. i have highlighted ends and I will not touch them.
The problem is with brands as well... i have seen a ton of reviews but can't decide which brand. I'm torn btween the ion shine ( 14$c) and the new loreal dia (15$ in canada).
Please help me😢
Of course i know that i need a lower volume as well (possibly 10)
I was thinking using 7nwith some less amount of 7.1 or 8.1 ( I'm 60% gray in some areas and way less in the back)
Most reviews says that color is darker in reality than advertised
I use mainly demi permanent on grey hair, it gives such a great result, without having to use so much “energy” to do it.
I’m afraid I can’t give out specific formulas remotely - it’s impossible without seeing someone in person and what you call “ashy” isn’t what I think is ashy…there’s just way to much to it.
I use Color Touch when I’m working on grey hair.
@@theworldofcraig I can understand. Anyways I wish you make a video about that, more info wouldn't hurt lol. How much gray coverage you get from color touch?
There are already many videos that mention using demi permanent to blend/cover grey here on my channel.
Color Touch has 2 developers, the intense one pretty much covers all grey….I’m generalising but it’s great.
What I take from this is that the transformation that needs to happen to the hair happens in the lifting process..at least partially...and so you don't need to do it even more so with permanent color...is that right? I think we don't need to lift the cuticle even more because that's going to do more damage. But we can just deposit some color because it's already been lifted because of the lifting process. Yes, Sir Craig?
That’s right, you’ve got it! Thanks for watching. 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
Hi Craig, what do you think about using permanent colour to make highlights instead? 😊
Hi Federica, thanks for watching. Of course…but I don’t use high lift tint, I’m a bleach human for blondes. 👨🏼🙏🏻✨
@@theworldofcraig Ok, thank you for your reply😊 so what would you suggest to get a level 9 highlights? I am a level 7 dark blonde with some level 8 highlights. Thank youu!
No problem. Well, that would be down to the hair pro doing them…but I would always use bleach.
And what is the difference between High lift and permanent colour? Ot would be great if you could explain it in a video 😍😍
@federicab6260 It’s in a few different videos…in some of the the “hair colour fact” ones I think..? They are in a playlist.
What if your not lifting your just coloring to blond with gray roots
If you’re covering grey that’s a different process.
🍻
Thanks for watching 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
2 alkaline chemical processes back to back sounds like a recipe for burns and damaged cuticle layers. I get why it's done since permanent color can help give more lift and or deposit more pigment, but yikes. Makes me think of all the videos of people using t18 right after multiple bleachings. Ouch.
I’m with you on that one, having watched a few humans using t18 after those 2 rounds…ouch! Thanks for watching. 👨🏼🙏🏻🩵
Thanks for helping me ungreen myself and for reading my mind 😁🫶
Oh my goodness, that’s so thoughtful and kind, thank you 👨🏼🩵✨
