  • The Seiko Arnie SNJ025 is one of my favourite watches in the collection! A true Homage of a Seiko Icon! Arnold Schwarzeneggar Immortalised this watch in a couple of my favourite 80's action movies and to own an SNJ025 feels like I'm wearing a film star on the wrist!
The 40th Anniversary Arnies are not to my liking and now is the chance for me to explain why!

I think the size is a pretty big reason why it makes it awesome. It's a statement piece, and it does the job for sure. (I don't even think it looks big either.) One reason I really like it is because of the size. It's legible and just straight bada$$
      Do you still own it?

I bought this model for the look, and I do dive. Very happy with this updated design and don't forget it is a 40th anniversary to commemorate the original, doesn't have to be the same as the original Arnie that I have. Happy to have both and the Black version looks awesome and badass outside :)

All they had to do was make my version fully stainless steel and it would’ve smashed the sales! Don’t call it an ARNIE and just have it as a seperate Prospex diver . That minute hand over the screen is a very lazy move! Something they made sure wouldn’t happen in 82!!!!!

Honestly, just get a Citizen Aqualand. Love my JP2007-17W. I am one of those divers that would get this watch for the diving add-ons. But it seems Citizen has been doing this interpretation of a dive watch better since 1985. Love Seiko, but not the new “Arnie”.

Cracking review, great work. One factor you may have overlooked however is the potential use of the new 'dive log' function to tell you how deep your washing up bowl is as well as the temperature of your washing up water. I gather Arnie was an absolute stickler for optimal water depth and temperature settings in all of his big movies ... though the scenes in question were sadly cut. 🤷‍♂

Totally agree with everything you’ve said the face looks reminiscent of a Chronosport UDT, I’ve a classic Arnie and was contemplating this but honestly the design never really grew on me. The original Arnie is a true icon and classic and should not be messed with, the only thing I would do is make it higher end from Japan as the build quality could be improved.

First of all, I enjoy your style and enthusiasm in your reviews.
I was fortunate to be old enough to have had the original Arnie before Commando came out. I've had several Seiko's that after I let them go became very valuable. My first Seiko I had when I was 11 was what is known as the Pogue NASA watch. I went through the Casio phase for a bit after that and ended up with my original Arnie. I had the Gigario side operated chronograph (not knowing it was Gigario)
For me, the tuna series are the best looking watches in the world. I bought the re-issued Arnie but sold it on as all the bright chrome on it was bothering me.
If Seiko issued a SNJ025 in all black, I'd snap their hands off.
One last point to make. is, I'm really disappointed that unless you go really top end with Seiko, you're not going to get a made in Japan watch.

I love your videos When I was a teenager and saw Arnie's Commando and Predator I fell in love with his watch. Unfortunately, I was not able to buy this watch at the time. A few years ago I fulfilled my childhood dream and bought the SNJ025. But since the watch had too many chrome elements for me, I sold it again. I like tactical equipment and it definitely shouldn't be shiny.
So I wrote a letter to Seiko and asked if they could make the Seiko Arnie in a "black series". A lady replied and said my suggestion would be forwarded...
When this black version - the SNJ037 - was released, I was thrilled. The perfect watch I've been waiting for for 40 years is finally here!
I understand that you no longer see this watch as an "Arnie" watch because the digital display has been moved down, but to be honest I'm actually very happy about it. Because the readability has increased significantly and the whole watch looks much more harmonious.

Case in point the Willard. I am about to release a video on a restoration of one from 1974 all original and one owner who used it what it was designed for , actually got a great story to tell in this video. Seiko have re released this model time and time again. Weird how they wont release a new "Pogue" or anything with a gold dial and pepsi bezel...

So if you dive in you’re at max 3m but the pressure on the watch would be a lot greater. So 80m on a dive computer is different to 200m WR. Great review as usual. I don’t have either the 025 or the 037 but to me, despite your strong argument against, I much prefer the over all look and function of the SNJ037! Don’t tell Arnold and to quote him, “You a very funny man, I kill you last!…….I lied!” I don’t like the silver colored pushers on the 025, the black ones on the new version with the blue and red rings are killer, not to mention the red second hand to match. I like that the side of the bezel is all black color and not the contrasting silver color of your favorite. The con points on the 037 are overwhelmingly outweighed by the pro points I’ve mentioned. It’s not an Arnie and not one I’d want. As a diver the info you get (depth and temperature) is just pointless. When I started diving in the late 1990s Citizen used to make the Aqualand and that would record, Max Depth, Bottom Time (no giggling at the back please) Time In, Time Out and Temperature and this is all good information for your logbook. Now though, most (if not all) divers use a computer and that records all sorts of useful info’. I’m also not sure why it would stop at 80m, even PADI now do a Trimix 90m (my cert’ level) and a 100m CCR cert’, so even the PADI special edition is pointless. I’m sure people will buy it but not the pure enthusiasts. Great review though and as always, a joy to watch.

Ya not great moving the digital screen to the bottom. What ends up happening as a result is that the Bezel casts a slight shadow onto the digital surface making it harder to read whereas when it was on the top it didn’t do that because of the angle of viewing on wrist. Hi likewise don’t think they need to make the digital screen bigger. The trade off was cutting the hour markers which I’m not a huge fan of. I do love the colours and the pops of red and blue, I don’t really care about the additional rivets but there is one too many stoppers on there. Overall that might appeal to some people but not me

I personally think the digi looks better at the bottom and makes more sense when reading the analogue. More of a cohesive look I reckon. I get that it's not the same as the original and perhaps should have given it a different name. I bought the silver one and call it the Terminator and love it.

A commercial diver here... the amount of people who are going below 80m is very few across the world & requires using specialized gas mixtures cause the nitrogen in air causes you to get extremely high. It also for very short dive lengths requires 3 hours in the water doing decompression to be able to survive & then +4 hours doing more decompression in a hyperbaric chamber on the boat. Working at 240' of depth is very costly paying divers, time consuming to accomplish the job in short bursts of activity, & requires tens of millions worth of equipment to accomplish. NO ONE is diving that depth "for fun"

@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR in dive school one of the lessons is being put down at various depth in a hyperbaric chamber. The last one is a little over 60m (190') for the explicit purpose of giving the student Nitrogen Narcosis so that we have practical experience with feeling it. Anything below 60m (180') requires HeliOx for air, the Nitrogen is replaced with Helium to prevent Nitrogen Narcosis (Helium doesn't get you high but it does take much longer to get out & makes decompression that much longer.) They also showed a video of a diver in Poland that got narc'd a little less than 60m according to his dive computer... he got confused and kept going deeper along the lake bottom, he was below 110m when he finally dropped his equipment & took his mouthpiece out (horrifying thing to watch a man giggling before he drowned.)

@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR The close up shot of his countdown timer watch in Commando is why I bought a vintage 1986 H601-5480 because I always marveled at that watch my whole life. It's a no-name modded Seiko and the H601 is the closest to the watch in that close up shot. If not for my 1986m I'm not interested in the watch at all, since the SNJ is too _tachymetre_ with the overly large crowns in every direction which makes it appear to be way bigger than the once-stealth H558 and H601 between 82-86. Since it's basically a stealth watch it comes across a bit smaller than an all-stainless of the same dimensions. I'm lucky to like and have what I have.
All reiterations of the Arnie get a no from me. My next diver's is a Steeldive Willard with black resin.

Same-Same, but Different: I dunno, Russ…so long as the OG "Arnie" stays in production, I wouldn't get in much of a huff about the new one; the only thing I feel Seiko screwed the pooch on with the new version is the backlighting on the LCD, which - at least judging from your video here - seriously bites. Other than that, I actually prefer the overall look of the 037. 'Course, since my taste has drifting toward smaller watches over the last few years, I doubt any of the above will end up on my wrist.

The last one I had was a Casio from way back in the 90s, which I resurrected a few years back and gave to a nephew of mine (who seemed to dig it a lot, thankfully). In fact, I haven't owned anything digital until about a year ago, when I impulse-purchased a Casio ProTrek 330, which I've come to like a lot. All-Digital and Tough Solar, of course.

Great reviewThank you! I think all this is made by Seiko on purpose. The display, the buttons... it is all upside down. Even the model number of the module is reversed - H855 (the original is 558). It is an anniversary watch and it should be different. The next model will be just like the previous. I'm sure.
