  • democracynow.org - In a Labor Day special, we air an extended conversation with Boots Riley, writer and director of “Sorry to Bother You,” his new film about an evil telemarketing company, a corporation making millions off of slave labor, and one Oakland man at the center of it all who discovers a secret that threatens all of humankind. His dystopian social satire is being hailed as one of the best movies of the summer. Riley is a poet, rapper, songwriter, producer, screenwriter, humorist, political organizer, community activist, lecturer and public speaker-best known as the lead vocalist of The Coup and Street Sweeper Social Club.

    Boots is right; voting in progressives is not enough - organizing labor, engaging in massive civil disobedience, and coordinating direct action (strikes, boycotts, etc.) drive change.

    this video is more importantly about praxis than the movie itself.
    it's an okay movie with an incredibly funny, grotesque super bizarre plot twist (worth a watch for that alone). the discussion around the film is a million times more important.

What I am saying is: If a person is from a 'not so good area usually high unemployment area' that Person will have to use their 'White Voice too' and even sometimes use another address to get the job. That is regardless of skin colour. I am in fact agreeing with Riley. I like the guy too.

    Teachers who ignored the law and shut down schools, yet still fed children who rely on those meals showed the lessons of power in unity and courage to any group of oppressed seeking a voice for change. Americans had best heed that lesson and change the course of our nation and planet, or all these distractions and actions are moot. As an ice free arctic emerges this summer or spring 2019 the latency heat calcs used to fry all that ice will scorch the northern hemisphere in a blink driven even harder by albedo loss, methane/gases, urban heat loss, solar, volcanic/geo heat emissions and humanity will likely go extinct in a blink before or not long after 2020.

    most excellent interview. I really appreciated learning about workers asserting their rites yet it is the CONsumer that needs to stop purchasing in extravagance. usa has 5% of the worlds population and uses 80% of the resources with 99% of the purchases disposed of within 6 months.
    We were told to listen to the trumpet sound of revelation. Trump/Pence epitomizes the greed, pride, lust, envy, gluttony, anger and slow to change that divides humanity into those who embrace that and those who find it repugnant. It is our, each and every one of us responsibility to recognize that for every indulgence another is set back. Nestles and child slavery, dams for electricity stopping the arteries of nutrients and life to the sea destroying other creatures, as mentioned the Amazon worker wages, Uber is having issues paying a decent wage, school systems denied libraries and the kids having to wear prison orange as uniforms in high school while wealthy areas receive abundant entitlements, the diamond mine slavery, copper waste ponds in Montana as acidic as stomach acid, Ohio river has coal plants on average every 38 miles with the average discharge of 110• which will increase exponentially now that the ORSANCO overseeing committee dropped out of the game because Chinese manufacturers will be bringing in thousands of chemical induced jobs- employing people to poison the earth to perpetuate the need for more jobs....
    Will humanity ever get tired of being enslaved to the corruption or will their pharma-coma send them into more artificial environments, with fake foods, replacing their bodies with fake parts to keep the economy strong? Will we ever awaken to the alien ideals we are living in? False power of the dollar bill is a principle that too many bit into and are now getting bit back as the 1% tighten their grasp. If as a group we boycott cash the 1% would be the poorest of all because they ain't got no soul!

      FunkFight1 I read Brother Boots’ critique and didn’t think it was valid. Ergo, it comes across as jealousy.

    • @FunkFight1
      @FunkFight1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Which part wasn't valid? The part about the only thing that made the cop the hero were the totally fictional elements? The part about the supposed hero of the story actually infiltrating organizations that were fighting racism and fighting the klan for years and didn't actualy thwart the klan in real life but was made to look heroic in the movie? The part about the made up racist cop bust by the whole department which made it look like the whole department was interested in fighting racist cops? Those are inarguable facts. Spike's movie is pro-cop propaganda. Even John David Washington says so in his interviews. he says he wanted to do the film to show cops as the good guys. How would it not be a valid critique? Nothing about that sounds jealous. Sounds like the critique is a service to the rest of us.

People associate capitalism with big business, multinational corporations, international bankers, etc, those people are not capitalists, they are radical statists who want big government and ZERO free market competition.
