  • The VML method - treating Apraxia/dyspraxia of speech in a unique innovative way of therapy. The VML was developed in Israel during the last 16 years. The VML method is based on manual techniques and motor learning principles organized together to a structered method. More details can be found in www.yaelcenter.com

    Thanks for the comment. The use of oral motor treatment is indeed controversial in the literature. There is no evidence supporting the use of Oral motor tech' but the research is poor and has many methodological flaws. We found in a wide retrospective study of 256 cases good correlations between speech and oral tasks. In addition, Oral motor treatment is just a small part of the VML method.

    My daughter who is now 10 was taught these techniques here in Las Vegas, NV back in 2007-2008. They helped her tremendously and therapy was quick with results! My son is 6 and has been in therapy for THREE years will hardly any accomplishment. I wish I could find the therapist that helped my daughter so she could help my son too!
    What one of the other comments was referring to was not that the equipment is used to touch the child on their face, her concern was that it wasn't sanitary to have the child use the whistle after the instructor used it in his mouth. I agree the child should have a sanitary whistle. Any objects used in the mouth should be sanitized between use of other students or student and teacher. Otherwise, regardless of publications issued, I can vouch this method is most effective and if literature suggests otherwise, it's because there's more money to be made with therapy that isn't as effective and takes much longer to get results.
    My daughter got control of her speech with this method within a year. My son is being helped verbal with a few visual cues and has gotten nowhere in three years of therapy. A hands-on approach with objects being used to help them feel the correct place within the mouth is the way it works. I totally back this up. My daughter will too!

    I strongly believe my daughter needs this type of therapy for her apraxia of speech. She has a lot of sensory issues and I really wish we could have this type of therapy. Are therapists trained like this in the States? We are in the Raleigh, NC, area and would LOVE to get a therapist with this VML method training. Or, are there training sessions on this method available in the States? Thank you for any help!

      Hi, there are no therapists in the states yet. I was working with few families in the states on an individual basis.
      It is possible to have a few days of specific training and therapy. Please contact through Yaelcenter website or directly at center@yaelcenter.com

    Do you have a list of training videos for parents? My 5 yr old daughter does not have this diagnosis, but has some of these same symptoms. She has q22, just had a soft cleft palate repair and now they want to do a pflap, but we have not made a final decision.They say her severity is neurological. I wonder if unique intervention and intentional neurological stimulation, if there might be a better option for my daughter.

    • @0023ev
      @0023ev  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, where are you from? We don't have training videos because we found it ineffective.
      I think you first sort the physiological aspects of the palate and then we can look into the motor learning of speech.

    • @susanregan9070
      @susanregan9070 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We are in Arizona, in the US. I am not aware of any other palate issues other than the repair of her soft cleft palate. Her phyrngeal muscle does not respond, so they want to do a pflap. She also has large tonsils. At birth, 5 wks early due to complications, she was aspirating severely and had severe reflux. They said her issues were neurological. She was put on a gtube for the first yr and a fundoplication, which she still has. Her speech impairment is severe and currently receives 3 hrs of speech therapy a week. I am interested in your method and would like to implement it with my daughter, as well as other oral motor exercises.

    The biggest problem with my daughter is that beside CAS she is diagnosed with Autism as well, and not paying attention a lot and she is sensitive with touch. she doesn't let me touch her cheeks or squeeze them or any part of her face. what are the techniques for the CAS + ASD kids?

      Hi, you can take the online evaluation at evaluate.yaelcenter.com and the online training at train.yaelcenter.com we will come soon with a new online platform. VML mostly work with ASD children who have CAS. This the main population. You need to learn the whole method, it is not a specific tip.

    well ok,i know oral and speech motor tasks can correlate if there is comorbidity,and the rest of the method seems MCL, problem in croatia is that no one does any therapy for CAS except oral motor th,the other problem is that parents often(if not 99%cases) refuse to give SLT permission to touch their child even with latex gloves when there is written statement..how did you solve that?what is ur opinion of Talk Tools use, they represent it as opposite of Beckman tools,but,they r just the same

      Sharene Lewis Hi, the techniques are similar in a way to prompt but more then in prompt. However they are not the main thing about VML but the analysis procedure and the use of motor learning principles which in extensive (22 principles at least). The instrument mouthing was a mistake in the film - when you film for few hour to get 5 minutes that what might happen,,,,:)

    • @0023ev
      @0023ev  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sharene Lewis Thanks for that. The questionnaire you can access through the link. The form is attached in a pdf format. I will consider revising the description of the vml

    Great integration of sensory/Kaufman/talk tools, Marshala, and Beckman techniques, but I’d use gloves and not share patient saliva on horns/whistles. Seeing that made me cringe. Definitely not a practice norm in US to do this without proper protection.

    • @0023ev
      @0023ev  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for that. You are right about that. This is not how it is practiced. We keep high hygiene. We don't use gloves since it doesn't allow good interaction with most of the children using techniques.
      I can assure you that we have very low rate of called off sessions due to illnesses both therapist or children. We have around 95% occurrence of sessions. I respect your advice.
      People may think that the techniques are the main strategy of the VML method but it is wrong. The main thing is the analysis process and the use of motor learning principles in the evaluation and treatment. The manual techniques are small part of the system. You can have great session with no touching at all, though in some cases it is crucial.

  • @0023ev
    @0023ev  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    VML is not just touching techniques, the opposite is true. The analysis, intensity, choosing the right subjects, amount of practice and structuring the intervention are in the basis of the method and sometimes contribute more then the techniques.
    It is the parents right not to allow touching technique but I found it absurd, wouldn't a parent allow physical intervention in pt treatment?
    Talk tools can help as any other tool, it depends on the goals of the program.

    • @0023ev
      @0023ev  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there, allow me to disagree on that. The statistics of illness among the children treated with the method in the clinic doesn't exceed the average, nor parents reporting health issues, nor any other indication for virus transmission. If you data regarding that, if you have checked it empirically, please come forward with the data. Please don't talk about a method or a technique you are not familiar with.

      @@0023ev You gotta be kidding me about using the same flute and whistle as the child. At least use individual items for you and the children. That is not hygienic! Especially not in a pandemic!

      Sorry you feel bad about it. First of all, this video took place 6 years before the pandemic, second, we use separate blowing tools in therapy and keep high standards though not hysterical, third, this is my daughter in the video, chill, all good. If you are intimidated by the low standards of the method, don't use it.
