  • The Butterfly Effect 2004 Movie Review
    The Butterfly Effect is a 2004 American science fiction thriller film written and directed by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber. It stars Ashton Kutcher, Amy Smart, Eric Stoltz, William Lee Scott, Elden Henson, Logan Lerman, Ethan Suplee, and Melora Walters. The title refers to the butterfly effect.
    Kutcher plays 20-year-old college student Evan Treborn,[3] who experiences blackouts and memory loss throughout his childhood. Later, in his 20s, Evan finds he can travel back in time to inhabit his former self during those periods of blackout, with his adult mind inhabiting his younger body. He attempts to change the present by changing his past behaviors and set things right for himself and his friends, but there are unintended consequences for all. The film draws heavily on flashbacks of the characters' lives at ages 7 and 13 and presents several alternative present-day outcomes as Evan attempts to change the past, before settling on a final outcome.

    Interesting review, I haven’t seen this movie but it sounds interesting. The way you described it reminds me of Donnie Darko. I would highly recommend Donnie Darko if you haven’t seen it, it’s a great movie! The Director’s Cut is especially really good!
    Also, I like the new lighting setup!

    Excellent review Brandon, thank you.
    I love how you picked up on the way that some scenes were off and not “earned”. I’d never really thought about that before but you’re absolutely right.

      You're welcome! And thank you for the kind words. Yeah, just how suddenly awful some of the kids acted felt like the filmmakers were just trying to be edgy

    Totally agree with most this. But i do remember in the early 2000s we did have really edgy kids. Myabe it was the crowd i was associated with strictly. And of course I didn't ever see any animals get harmed but there just was weird things. We had kids taking Slim Shady and ICP lyrics very seriously at the time. Things from self harm to getting in trouble with the law, kids and teens were eating that stuff up thinking lyrics were very literal. Had kids running away and other getting into gangs. I even remember other people my age telling me to avoid certain people because they did weird thing like harm small animals and stuff. So again Im thankful for not seeing a lot of the stuff that was going around my town. But I know it was there, thats why i always felt super weird and disturbed by the edginess of this movie, some characters were spot on to the people around me city .

    I like this movie a lot but I also can understand why many people wouldn't. It's a time travel story revolving around the question of what if you could go back and change things. But, for whatever reason, they decided to center the story on abuse of children. That kind of content will overpower the time travel aspects and put people off.

    • @BrandoCritic
      @BrandoCritic  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sure... they definitely go for a grim tone

    • @DanielRichards644
      @DanielRichards644 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      if you didn't have a tragedy to avoid what would be gained from the time travel, trying to make your life even better then it was because you're a selfish fuck? I highly suggest the Directors Cut, it's the far superior movie and didn't take much to be altered, just a few scenes and a radical change to the ending.

    • @flibber123
      @flibber123 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DanielRichards644 The problem is not that it was a tragic past. The problem, insofar as not being audience friendly, is the nature of the tragedy. The 'ick' factor is high in this movie.

    2:35 _"I will admit my film lover's side of my brain liked this movie more than my film school side."_
    Yea, that would explain the inverse reception between the critics and the audience for this movie. 34% critics score with an average rating of 4.8/10 on Rotten Tomatoes, audience score is 81% (7.8/10). On Metacritic, 30/100 from critics, 8.5/10 (universal acclaim) from audience ratings-- like what the heck on that one. And B+ on CinemaScore and 7.6/10 on IMDb, which is virtually all audience ratings. That's what has kept me from watching this movie, cuz I tend to agree with the critics at least 97% of the time-- cuz my film school brain dominates my film lovers side of my brain.
    But you always see the _"When deciding whether or not I should see a particular movie, I always go with the audience score, never the critics score"_ comments on film articles and those comments always get a ton of upvotes. Especially when it's concerning a film that's critically liked but is divided amongst the general audience. It reminds me of that Mr. Plinkett quote at the end of his _Titanic_ reaction: _"Most people are dumb and don't like to be challenged intellectually or emotionally. They like the familiar and gravitate towards things that feel safe and nonconfrontational."_ Truest statement ever said about humanity.🤣

    • @BrandoCritic
      @BrandoCritic  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep! Absolutely! I generally go with the critics score when it comes to looking for movies to watch. Like you said, ANYONE can vote on the audience score and most people don't like anything too challenging. However, sometimes with enough recommendations, I can give a movie with a low critic score a chance

    • @rustincohle2135
      @rustincohle2135 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BrandoCritic Yea, I do watch movies with low critics scores too, just not often. And also, the other comment I see more often is _"Actually, I always look at the critics score on a movie. Cuz if the critics hate it, then I know I'll LOVE it."_ Seeing that comment always makes me cringe so hard.😄

      The film school side of one's brain doesn't necessarily mean you attended film school, but that you know more about film than the average moviegoer (shot composition, lighting, camera angles, film & TV tropes, editing techniques, ADR, acting choices, subtext, themes, symbolism etc.)-- you can learn all that stuff independently like I did. And yea, the more movies you watch the more predictable they become. You especially learn more about filmmaking from watching bad movies than good ones. Cuz when a movie works, it can be hard to articulate why it's good. Whereas if you've seen enough good movies, then it's easy to pick apart why a bad one doesn't work, like messy plot structure, very on-the-nose dialogue with no subtext etc. When you have a good understanding about film, you notice that most movies are total 💩.
