How to Replace Spark Plugs - 2006-2010 Kia/Hyundai 3.3L and 3.8L V6 (Sedona)

  • This was done on a Sedona (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010), but this applies to the Sorento, Amanti, Santa Fe, Sonata, Entourage, etc with the 3.3 or 3.8. How to remove upper intake manifold/plenum to access rear spark plugs.
    Note: I also replaced the throttle body gasket, I just forgot to mention it in the video. Another thing, I did not torque the bolts with my impact tools. I just ran them down and tighten them the rest of the way with my ratchet.
    Also, when installing your spark plugs, be careful not to drop them down into the holes. Guide them with your finger so it doesn't bend the electrode.

    I like the way you just get it done. Sometimes you don't want to tackle a job because you want to know exactly where each bolt needs to goes. What you have to remember is you will figure it out eventually. We are human and that is what we do. Figure stuff out. This is a perfect example on how a confident brain works . This is how people should approach a job like this. Confidently. Goes a long way.

    I was looking to change the plugs on my 2006 KIA Sedona.
    I don't have the 4hrs and patience for the manifold work to do it myself. Will let my auto shop handle it
    Glad to see a good overview of what I would have had to do.

    Thumbs up!!! 2009 kia borrego similar but close enough this is great help. Thought I'd let you know Something I dealt with on mine was the Box stores said to keep The same gap as the plug was pre gapped .036 but I talk to NGK on the phone and they said to adjust .044 but be sure you only adjust the grounding electrode and don't damage the fine wire. Also he said due to the special coating on their plugs not to use anti-seize. When I come at might be helpful to Someone so you don't get poor fuel efficiency or fouling by just sticking with the pre gap

    Hyundai engineers should hang their heads in shame based on this design. What a huge waste of time this creates. What should be a Simple 30 min job takes a few hours for the diy’r. Maybe that’s intentional....
    I do appreciate your video, tho. I ended up doing this all twice in an afternoon...first time took about 2 hours, wasn’t running right (wouldn’t idle in gear, stalled several times on initial test drive). So I started over and rechecked the plugs and coils. Second time took about 30 minutes, and it appears it behooves you to spend a little extra time and make sure the coils are fully seated on the plugs. I’m pretty sure that was my problem as it is working perfect now. Thanks again for the video...cost me some time but no doubt it saved me a big chunk of $ compared to a garage.

    I saw in Russia ( some years ago !)a spark plug socket with magnetic wall. So You will not need to use another tool for grabbing the spark plug. I think in USA should be already available in the Auto Parts Store already...

    Thanks for the video. Similar (but not exactly the same) PITA procedure for the '06 Azera Lambda 3.8L v6.
    Btw... that's NOT the intake manifold on top of the engine. Hyundai calls it the "surge tank"--the intake manifold is beneath the surge tank. Stupid Hyundai. Everyone calls these parts the "upper" and "lower" intake manifolds; Hyundai should just refer to them the same way.

      Coils RARELY go bad. Coils generally are NOT replaced as part of routine maintenance (per Hyundai Service Manual).
      However, if you get a "random misfire" DTC (along w/a cylinder-specific code), ONE POSSIBLE SOURCE for that code is one or more faulty coil(s). A technician can pretty quickly identify a wonky coil with a scope. The shade-tree mechanic can guesstimate a problematic coil a coil-swap procedure. There are plenty of good videos on TH-cam that detail this procedure.

    • @MrBryant240sx
      @MrBryant240sx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the amount of work needed to remove the intake, I would replace the coils and plugs. If your someone like me who plans to drive the car until the end a bad coil is certainly one of the things that will stop you.

    What did you use to grab the tips of the spark plugs to pull them out, after loosening the plugs??

    • @MightyMechanic
      @MightyMechanic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a grabber type tool that goes down and grabs it but you could use a magnet as well. They also make a special socket that grips it when taking it out.

    • @CBTalon97
      @CBTalon97 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got a few sockets with rubber spark plug retention rings inside them in a large socket set years back that stops you from having to try and fish them out. It also makes the job or re-installing your plugs a little quicker and easier.

  • @pauldennison2543

    Video was informative but you kept referring to the coils as Coil packs, a coil pack serves multiple cylinders via spark plug wires. Coils, like these are individual & run each plug separately.
