Yes there are arid areas like that in Spain that could pass for desert. Regions of Southern European countries like Spain, Portugal and Italy were often used in the past to double as desert areas of USA in western Movies which is why they get the name 'spaghetti western' (although I guess spaghetti pertains Italy specifically.) I guess it worked out cheaper to film in those areas. A lot of the extras playing Mexicans in those films are actually locals!
