See this is the kind of thing I wished more trainers would do ... show the ACTUAL process in its reality. The repetitions ... the patience required ... the commitment. I think "we" (the people watching and trying to learn) get the false impression sometimes when we watch these professionals who either use already trained dogs to demonstrate a process or leave out the actual "work" that it takes to get the dog "trained". I understand it's "boring TV" but the boring TV is more likely to set people up for success by setting realistic expectations. (ie this doesn't happen overnight and takes a LOT of hard work). Kudos to you Tom ... SUBSCRIBED!
Agreed, so many training videos are shown and the dog is obviously so well trained and used to the exercise it doesn't teach us anything, it's much better seeing this kind of thing then you know what to do to correct any mistakes on the dogs part and probably more in my case the handlers part. 😂🐺 regards Joanne
thank YOU! for showing all this! I'm definitely going to work on the "finish. command w/ my dog & then incorporate it w/ the recall! This helps! Glad you're showing everyone! 😊
thankyou! exactly the command i was looking for - you would be surprised there is not much out there on youtube etc on how to teach this specific command, so thanks a million :)
Tom, please come to Central FL. I've had great ability/luck training dogs until now! I have a 12 wk BGSD who has NO drive, food, verbal, treats, ball, rope, nothing! Once a day, I can get her with a flirt pole but gets lost quickly. Her food was working, now she'll just lay down. Yes, she's been checked by a vet twice. I know puppies aren't your favorite but she was a prospect for my service dog and now..... any advise would be appreciated. As always, love your videos, thank you for sharing.
How is this different from calling the dog with come then telling it to heel vs come then finish??? Genually curious if there is a purpose for having 2 different commands for the dog ending up by your left side
Really helpful with training if you are new to it. The confidence you have with training comes from the experience. I do so much better with my dogs now then when I first started. Thank you for wonderful teaching videos. Been training for forty years.
Great video as usual. Nice to see a new discipline right off the bat with a dog that’s never done it before. Is it possible to use a clicker and a verbal marker together so you can use one or the other in the future?
Hi Tom, I just got an english bulldog puppy and was wondering if you had any videos where you are working with bulldogs. They seem to be a bit more stubborn than my other dogs and wasn't sure if its just the breed like everyone keeps saying or if its me.
Question, I’ve heard you say a couple times to not startt a puppy with treat training right off the bat, if it’s a 8 week old puppy to 3 months, how would you teach them then? If its without a treat to lure them. What would your way of luring specifically a puppy be? Cause an older dog, you’d back them up with the leash a little and naturally their bum goes down. I was thinking of starting to do it with his own food and then some of it he eats in the cage to help him associate the cage to being a comfortable place to eat/ sleep but once he’s able to learn the sit or whatever command, I won’t be using his food just praise/ toys
This is great, thanks so much for posting! Using the wall to start will be such a huge help. Any tips on how to adjust this training for a small dog? Our JRT is 12lbs and super low to the ground.
Do you have any advice for a dog that is not used to being around people?I have a husky/great pyronease that is a very friendly dog but will bark or growl at strangers. When he was very young, he was a bit like that as well, so I tried to avoid him being around people which is my fault😢 I want to know I can get him a dog sitter from time to time if needed & it would be fine. When he used to the person, no problem but he basically doesnt trust other people
Thanks Tom, I have learned so much from you! Can you tell us which brand of 4 ft. leather leash you prefer to use with the Herm Sprenger prong collar? And thanks again for sharing your skills with us!
Awesome video! Just started working on it with my border collie/Aussie cross. She picked it up quite quick! Wondering about an additional video about recall under distractions, for example when other dogs are around and playing at the park. Thanks!!
I notice you are using a food lure. When do you eliminate it? One of your previous videos cautioned against reliance on treats because a dog may not know the underlying command which is the goal without the food reward. Confusing
Hey Janice, I can answer this for you in case you haven't received an answer. I would start some training as soon as you get your puppy/dog (after they have had a day or two to settle in that is). However, if the dog is young, like 8 weeks old, keep the training sessions short and sweet with lots of positive praise when they do it right. I would do maybe a 5 minute session a few times a day if you can. Best time for a puppy to learn is after they have released some energy. So like after a structured walk, maybe do a 5 min training session. With young dogs (actually, all dogs) the best thing you can do is be consistent and patient. I hope that helps you! Good luck & have fun!
What do you do with a dog that gets board easily but you have to do repetition in order to teach them and don't have time to work them several times a day and he also has a strong prey drive. He will work for me but isn't interested after a while. In addition he is sound sensitive. Gun shot, fireworks, thunder and even flashes of lightening will set him off. I lose him completely as he attempts to escape and run to get away from it all. Thanks for all your hard work.
1st time I have added a comment. I think what you do on your niche is soooooo way ahead of anything else I have seen. Just brilliant for pet owners with sometimes very major problems. You are truly a magician. Sorry, but what you have shown is not what I would expect of any form of competitive obedience training. Even by your own standards way too long training sessions where dog is not engaged at the level needed for obedience competition. The emotional responses to behaviours I would want are very different.mWay too many repetitions. Maybe leave that niche to your other trainers that are skilled With competitive obedience. That area is a specialty like your niche is a specialty. But maybe I got it all wrong just because it is not to my standards expected of a high level competitor. Or just you didn’t have enough time to show (or I didn’t see) the progressions you teach toward trialling excellence.
I brought my dog out into the park to train it to come to me when I call its name. Found out three days later it only responds to the sound of my wife divorcing me. I lost it. Then when it came back I lost my wife

This is how I do my videos No editing ,so mistakes are shown and how to work through them. Great video. Thanks Tom : )

Teaching heel made such a big difference in my dog training
I love the concept of using a wall to force a tight heel position. Awesome! Well done, Rookie.
Patience Level: God Mode
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
Exactly!!!
Not sure why I had a hard time following this, but again, this is exactly what I was looking for. I might have to watch again.
Thank you Tom for your fantastic videos ❤❤
Watching you work with the dogs is so beautiful! Thank you for teaching us to be better for our dogs.
thank YOU! for showing all this! I'm definitely going to work on the "finish. command w/ my dog & then incorporate it w/ the recall! This helps! Glad you're showing everyone! 😊
Brianna Casey thanks for watching!

I love the way you use psychology when training dogs!
thankyou! exactly the command i was looking for - you would be surprised there is not much out there on youtube etc on how to teach this specific command, so thanks a million :)

My black GSD is not food motivated, do you have tips for dogs like her?
Dee Dee Armstrong verbal reward!
@@tomdavisofficial Thank you.
Do u work puppies like this
I notice you are using a food lure. When do you eliminate it? One of your previous videos cautioned against reliance on treats because a dog may not know the underlying command which is the goal without the food reward. Confusing
I have a 6 year old German shepherd. He obviously knows all the main commands. Is e too old to learn this recall, heal position?
Successive approximation 🤘
Thanks Dan!
Can I come work for you I’d love to help and learn lots from you
how young can you start with this training?

Carlos Cameselle that’s the end product!

What are some of the best commands to teach together?
Why do you say finish and not heel?
They are two different things.
