    Like to see this with a dog that's actually a puller. This pup is ALREADY incredibly focused on his human trainer - lots of training already done here.

      Better is you use a dog that pulls like mad and see how that's done. This dog is pretty well trained already.

    This worked perfectly! We did it first inside with no distractions, second moved to outside with little distractions and then moved into an area with a little more distraction. After building the foundation moved to giving 'treats' every other time, then moved to every third time until we didn't need treats every time. It also worked great to do it during meal times so they had to work for their breakfast & dinner. Thank you!

    Thank you SO MUCH for these tips, Instructor Steve! I have been training my five-month-old Goldendoodle using many of the training videos given for free (Thank you!) by McCann dogs. My puppy had been developing a real pulling issue, but this morning on our walk she did much better after I implemented one of the things you suggested. Instead of saying, "no pull!" when the leash tightened, I simply used the "quick few tugs" method you suggested. It worked! Thanks very much for sharing the wisdom you have gained through training your own dogs.

    I enjoy Steve’s approach. My question is: What do I do about walking my puppy while he’s still learning to walk on a loose leash? Our 30 minute morning walk could take awhile if I address all instances of pulling. I can’t avoid exercising my dog until she’s learned not to pull.

      You can use different equipment or make use of the harness that have a clip at the front. Loose lead walking clip at the front, and the one on the back if you need to get somewhere quicker. Driving to the park if you own a car and letting your dog off or using a long line so they have no chance to pull x

      I like to get at the top of the stairs. Throw a kibble to the bottom. Pup goes down to get it and then I drop one at the top and pup runs back up. Up and down, up and down. Or do some fetch with a ball. Anything that gets them more active. Walking is great but doesn’t spend that extra energy some dogs have.

      I found it is the same with my GSD/malinois mix. Essentially, she just plainly hate walking. Absolutely everything else in the world is more interesting than just walking on a leash, no matter what treats I am rewarding her with for not pulling. I am able to walk an entire block without her pulling at all if we are playing tug at the same time which is obviously not annoying at all.

    I love this channel. I just got a 1 year old 30lb hound mix, she's shy & nervous but so sweet once she warms up to you. Currently in the first phase of house training. She tends to pull on the leash a bit, the collar and harness I have for her are a bit too big so I need to get smaller ones, and she isn't liking any treats we give her. milkbone biscuits(got the variety flavor) she doesn't like, and for training we have peanut butter biscuits and chewy chicken bites and she doesn't like either. what she does like is her pig ears and rawhide. so I can't really train her if she won't eat the training treats haha! but this is so helpful, I'm going to be here nearly everyday!

    The 3 D's:
    Distance
    Distraction
    Duration
    When any one of them goes up the other two must go down.
    Example: Stay command for a minute (long Duration), requires a short distance (for correction if the dog attempts to get up early), and little distraction (so the dog can focus on the command).

      A tip to not have the dog be so hard to work without treats is to avoid picking up treats before desired behavior, most dogs will connect the dots and understand that tricks are only worth doing if the treat is already out.
      Instead, with a bit of practice and large pockets/a large pouch - you can time your treats as well by simply being quick to pull it out and give it to the dog ^^

    My dogs all learned the meaning of Come, Sit, Down, Heel and Stay.
    There are a couple of thing that really really bother me with how you train dogs.
    1. You use food as a constant reward. The dog is focused on your hand and pocket where the food is. They aren't looking at your face, they hardly hear your voice.
    2. The dog needs to remain sitting, until YOU say "Down". Not when they feel like not sitting anymore.
    3. The model of training I was taught when getting a dog to "Stay with me" or "Heel" - not pull on the lead - was to: a) simply turn 180 degrees and tell them to "Stay with me"; or or "Heel" or, b) give a very firm jerk on the collar (NOT a stupid harness like you see too many people using) saying a very firm "No jerking - stay with me" or "No - Heel"!
    Simple commands given consistency backed up with huge praise - NEVER EVER "treats" or food - resulted in dogs that adored me and knew their place in the world.
    Military and police K-9 dogs are NOT trained with food. Those who train seeing-eye dogs NEVER EVER use treats or food either.
    All domesticated animals need a purpose and a place in the hierarchy.
    Sure, your method "works", but I know from experience that dogs truly integrate their training when given praise and accountability.

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All important points to think about, Peter! All of these methods are working toward a scenario where you don’t need to use food at all, because the history of reward is so high. Here’s a video for you to check out that talks specifically about how your good timing can help you to reduce the use of food in training: Here's How To Train With Treats So You Don't Need Them Forever th-cam.com/video/qLutjke0y9U/w-d-xo.html

    I have 4 dogs. Three are quite good on a leash. The fourth pulls with all her might and screeches at the top of her lungs when she sees another dog or sometimes even a person in the distance. She is hyper alert and always looking for something or someone. I’ve spent lots of $$ with trainers and even they have given up. So now I’ve given up. I only walk her when I’m in a frame of mind to deal with her behavior or when I know fewer people are out, like in bad weather.

Every time I gave in to her, we had to start all over again.

    This is good and correct use of positive reinforcement, which is how dogs should be trained. So, Kudos for that. However, dogs are curious by nature, and when I take my dog for a walk, it is HIS walk, so I do allow him a certain freedom to explore and smell the scents around him (could be other dogs, squirrels, cats, that have been in that area). Exploring around is a natural part of a dog's behavior IMO, so I do allow my dog to explore. I use treats as positive reinforcement when my dog sees another dog across the street and keeps walking. If I run into my neighbors when my dog is with me, I make it quick and let them know that the dog needs his walk.

    • @devlynjane790
      @devlynjane790 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @MrMarvJones
      @MrMarvJones 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since training a dog to pull on the leash can be dangerous if in a public place where they could get into harm, a lot of people will switch to a harness if they want to let their pet explore. A harness will feel different and encourage the dog to pull different directions to explore, while the leash pressure has a different feel that is a bit more strict. Just an idea!

    As a first time owner I did a lot wrong. I was very inconsistent with leash training and had to try out a lot. We ended with the tree method which was perfect. Before we did it with clicker which worked out too but then I lost the clicker. I'm so excited for my next puppy and how I will train leash manners. I thought about using the clicker, directly using collar for nice walking and harness for pulling plus training to respond to leash pressure. My girl was a lab bomb wanting to go anywhere Im really excited for my next dog.

      I have a 5 month old female and she's BIG for a girl and stronger than any of my last 3 dobes male or female (she's already 60lbs). She pulls so much though lately on leash I'm starting to consider getting my skateboard out and just having her pull me along LOL Its absurd how stubborn she is though but give her a bit of a break considering she's still a pup. She has improved on the leash greatly since the beginning but still not where I want her, I LOATH dogs pulling on the leash excessively where the walk becomes more of a personal workout than leisure. Last 3 dobes all walked like champs but she's taking a while.

    Love this technique for the most part. I would love to see using something other than the bumping of the leash. I think some people would progress that to actual hard leash pops. I love seeing the different ways to teach something so difficult. Thank you!

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, Kim! To be fair to the dog the rate at which you’re popping on the leash may need to be faster. If a harder pop is required then you may be waiting too long before adding the leash correction. What’s really important in an exercise like this is using just enough “bump” or “pop” to effect change. Then pour on the praise when your dog is back with you. The moment your leash has tension you need to start using those bumps! This is how the dogs begin to understand that the “cue” is leash tension and they’ll begin to fix themselves before it gets any tighter! Thanks for watching! ~Ken

      McCann Dog Training Hi! I don’t use leash corrections in training. Which is why I was thinking that this technique could be modified a bit for me and while If I did use corrections like this I would use it early so it would be mild, I know with the normal pet owner, things could escalate easily and quickly. I would rather that not happen. You all work on attention skill a lot in your videos, so as just a question, why not come up with an interrupter word that is also highly reinforced to get attention? Just thinking out loud. Like I said, I like 99% of this technique you have shown and it would be easily taught in a group setting. And I am sending the puppy potty training videos to my in-laws for their puppy. They are having issues and are not close to me so I can help.

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are certainly thinking the righty way, Kim! The earlier, the better and you’ll be able to reinforce the great behavior without having to redirect! The challenge most people have is that their environment overwhelms their dog (and them in some cases). If you are able to interrupt your dog from leaving by using your voice and they are still on a loose leash, then that is ideal! It’s such a nice way to reinforce the choice of staying with you! When dog owners start to increase the challenge for their dogs, they need to have great timing with their voice, and what will often happen is that they are constantly talking to their dog to maintain that attention (which is a double edged sword unfortunately). If the only way to maintain attention is to be speaking constantly, the value of voice begins to diminish. And at some point while increasing the challenge, the dog will inevitably make a mistake. This is actually a good time for the dog to learn “what isn’t allowed”. By using the leash to redirect your dog back then praising when they return to you, it begins to put a little onus on your dog to work a little harder. By starting to discriminate between the “good responses” with praise, and the “GREAT” responses with a high value reward, your dog starts to choose you because you are valuable. Because dogs will do what’s rewarding, you’ll start to see your dog looking to you more often and offering you that attention because you’ve established a history of reward for doing so. I really love answering questions like this, as we often get to show this to our in-class students but it’s much more difficult to show the behavior change over time on TH-cam. I think there’s another video that you’ll find helpful on our channel that talks about some simple ways to be more “magnetic” with your dog. Here’s a link: th-cam.com/video/wogAFUwmeSw/w-d-xo.html

    Seeing people talk about how certain distractions are too much for their dogs. All my dogs have had TONS of drive, especially prey drive, as well as interest for other dogs (play drive setting in). These have been their absolute biggest distractions. For the current dog it's still something I'm working on. Anyway, it's really important to scale up the distractions slowly. Work with longer distances and smaller distractions first and slowly work your way up. Don't be afraid to take a step back if you need to. Now you can't control the environment in real life and that's okay, you can however control what you choose to do in the situation. If a situation is way too much for the dog I just try to get out of it, it won't make a good training session anyway. Another thing that's important is the PERSON. You have to stay perfectly calm and confident yourself. Do you get nervous when seeing a cat or another dog? Then that will contribute a lot to what the dog will feel.
    (Also for the folks saying their dog don't like treats, not all dogs do. You'll have to find another motivator good enough to work for.)

      Hey Peter! That’s precisely why we find an area with very few distractions. Maybe it’s a room in your home. Or a quiet area in a park nearby. Your back yard, or in a garage... you get the idea. But you need to find somewhere with few distractions to help your dog to be successful. Happy Training! ~Ken

      Also try keeping him getting used to getting praises instead of just treats. I convinced my dog that regular dog food is also a treat for him. He loves it. The best thing I can recommend is to start doing praise with regular treats and slowly start giving him smaller portions to eventually convincing him the food is treats then just regular praise. Don't let your dog free feed as well. You want to make him want the food not because he is starving but because he will recognize any food is a reward too. I recommend Kong toys for help with this instead of regular bowl feeding.

    Loved this video. My 5 month old Mini Schnauzer did great with this training. We started in the house, then the backyard. We did 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times a day. It took about 4 days and she was perfect. Time to go to the next level, we started in the driveway, then the sidewalk to the corner. She loose-leash walks perfectly UNTIL I give her a treat. As soon as I give her the treat, she looks forward and just keeps on walking. I stop, wait for her to come to my side, give the "walk" command and she pays attention, until I give a treat. I know I have to treat to train, but what am I doing wrong?

    This is very helpful. Thanks. One perhaps strange question: when I'm walking my dog, should I always expect the "with me" position? I live in the city, and have a (rescue) dog who attacks other dogs, so we have to keep her on the leash when taking her out to pee and poo. How can I communicate the difference between needing to heel, and walking politely but being free to sniff and pee, etc.?

    • @IHBBabe
      @IHBBabe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Teach a break/free dog command. When you give that command, they're free to be a dog, then you call them back to heel/be with you. That way they're clear when they're 'working' and when they're not.

      Jamaal Gill take him on a walk and the second he pulls on the lead stop the walk completely, no attention no progress until the pulling stops, then as soon as he stops continue as normal, repeat this until he understands pulling the lead stops the walk, this can be applied to anything you want a dog to do like jumping, if they jump no attention once they stop lots of attention

      Practice more in lower distraction areas until you've built more of a reinforcement history. Put distractions out (paper plate with low value food on it for example) and then correct him if he gets distracted by it. By doing this, you're teaching the concept at an easier level before hitting the streets with all the BIG distractions around. Small steps that the dog can be successful at.

    • @areyouavinalaff
      @areyouavinalaff 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      if the dog is already used to you saying "leave it" then don't change what you say, for the benefit of the dog's understanding.... stay consistent... the fewer syllables used the better. one word is more than enough for any situation.

    Interesting the techniques. I am getting there with my rescue who has had no leash training at all. Prefer your method to one I saw on another American channel - actually it seems much quicker - you simply use a prong collar, and yank the dog everytime it pulls and ignore its yelp. Yep that was a "qualified trainer". Impressed everyone with his paperwork, where you analyse why the dog is pulling and reactive (simple without the paperwork, the handler has got things wrong and needs some guidance!!!
    Anyway after all the paperwork, it was really simple - no commands or communication other than a yank on the prong collar..................
    Think I will continue with the kinder way you suggest!

I'm treating them with healthy foods. I also love tiny pieces apples, tiny pieces of old bread, crackers, chicken, that main thing is that they are very tiny.
