Even though you find it hard to imagine Hibs and Hearts combining, they used to do it. I recall attending the pre-season charity games in the 1950's, held alternately each year at each other's ground, with an "Edinburgh Select" team, made up from the two clubs. The visiting guest teams were from England's 1st Division (now the English Premier League). The grounds were packed and the fans from each club stood shoulder to shoulder in friendship with never a hint of animosity.

The rivalry wasn't so black and white back in those days. My Grandad was from Irish immigrant stock, but, supported Hearts. He would attend matches at Tynecastle and then at Easter Road the following saturday. Fortunately both my father and his father were Hibs supporters or I could have turned out a wrong'un!!

Superb video yet again Sam, i remember watching the Hibee's on TV in the 70's giving the likes of the mighty Leeds and Liverpool sides a real fright in European games, plus as a Jags fan i'm proud that Firhill was the first Glasgow ground to host a European game as Djurgardens home venue as bad weather in Sweden meant they couldn't play at home so they chose Firhill as their home park. Keep them coming.

Great Video! I use to live near the Hibs stadium and was able to see it from my bedroom window. Despite being a Hearts fan, I would enjoy seeing a sea of people in green going down Albion Road to the stadium. Being Canadian and growing up with Hockey fandoms, it was really nice experiencing sports fans getting into the spirit of their team in another country. One thing I would never do would wear anything red and or maroon when a game was on. Being a Montreal Canadian fan, Hib fans would mistaken the Habs' logo for the Hearts as my Dad discover when he would visit Scotland.

It's hard to say what a united Hibs/Hearts would've done. How many fans would they have had? I remember it well when the news broke that Wallace Mercer at Hearts had made the proposal, an already fierce rivalry intensified ten fold. I really don't think many fans would've supported a united team.
Hearts and Hibs try to emulate the Old Firm rivalry, the 'Proddies' and the 'Tims'. Hearts have a real anti catholic element to their fan base and to many are seen as the 'Mini Huns' , Hibs, obviously with their roots and tradition are seen as the Irish catholics ( even though they don't actually associate with the nationalism or religion associated with Celtic), so it's my belief the venture, had it actually gone ahead would've been doomed to failure. I don't believe they'd have had a fan base to work with, so the death of two clubs with history and tradition would've been for nothing.

Hibernian originally only signed Catholics unlike Celtic. Also I think some Hibernian fans do still associate themselves with Irish nationalism just maybe not the religious element of it. Outside of Scotland Irish nationalism and Home Rule is not something that's frowned upon.

At the time the country of Ireland was in a bad state the slums would have been an upgrade. Could have easily been avoided but we wouldn’t have got Celtic and Hibernian if Ireland didn’t have the famine

Unfortunately for many in Scotland Irish immigration has left a legacy of bigotry and sectarianism which is present in the communities of Irish descendants and Scottish Protestants. The violence, hatred and shame both sides inflict on Scotland makes me wish the famine didn’t happen, despite giving Scotland some of its best football teams.

Or Dundee United as they started out from Dundee Hibernian how in turn started out from the rements of Dundee Harp.
People all over Scotland shou be proud of there family heritage no matter what that heritage myb it's about showing respect for people as individuals in my view.

@@dr224444 as an Irish person I understand why the Irish may be sectarian towards the British and the crown. Famine easily could have been stopped as there was no shortage of food. Just the British took all the food away for very little. The Irish feel betrayed and the original Irish emigrants would have felt very hurt by the loss of family and not being able to live at home with their family.

@@cormac3542 I understand why there would be ill feeling towards the British crown/government at the time. The actions of the British were reprehensible in Ireland and further afield.
On the other hand the native Scots saw an increase in crime and disorder with the arrival of Irish immigrants and perceived it as a threat. Today, loyalists in Scotland still view them as a threat - which isn’t right.
I just don’t understand why both groups can’t leave it in the past and move on as Scottish people. We now have a large portion of the country who, despite being 4th or 5th generation Scottish, still claim to be Irish. We also have a large portion of people who identify with Britain more than they do Scotland and, for everyone else in Scotland, it’s quite frustrating.

....So to bring the Scots and Irish together they created a club with Irish name, Irish Logo and Irish motto saying: Ireland forever.....and placed it in Scotland....I can't see why the scots wouldn't love that....

They were the first club to have an only sectarian policy. Didn't have a non Catholic manager for decades. Celtic were formed to help the poor in that part of Glasgow while hibs were formed only to help Irish Catholics. I'm not either side, just pointing out their history. I'm a Hearts fan and can't be bothered with any sectarianism.

@yehudimcewan5167 it was catholics only at the start, that's correct. It's not right however that they only helped catholics. In the early years Hibs played many benefit matches to support all sorts of causes and charities, regardless of religion, including even striking workers.
Thankfully sectarianism (generally) plays little part in Edinburgh today.

First BRITISH team in Europe, first in UK to have flood lights, first to have shirt sponsor, first to have under soil heating, first to have share issue, first to wear green hoops. Every top team in Europe and England have come here and bean beaten except the dirty Leeds United team champions of England, we played them off the park at Elland road (0-0) and return leg was a shitty scrappy cheating 1-0 here, have a guess who scored, answers on a postcard etc

Leeds scraped a 1-0 win at Elland road before Jack Charlton scored an equaliser late on after a ridiculous 4 step rule free kick late on for a1-1 draw. 2-1 on aggregate. Second time were two 0-0 draws before Leeds won on penalties. One year Liverpool won the InterCities Fairs /EUFA cup the only game they lost in the competition was at Easter Road 1-0 before they edged through 3-2 on aggregate. I saw both matches live and it was really tight.
