  • In this game from 1995, Bruce Smith gets a wicked jump and destroys Boomer Esiason with a devastating (though unintentional) helmet-to-helmet hit. Esiason later said after this hit, he was one of the first players to go through a concussion protocol. He talks about this in this interview:

    Smith was ruled offsides, so the sack did not go down.

Bruce's head never stops or jolts upon contact which means his helmet was up over Boomers shoulder pad while Bruce's shoulder hits Boomer in the upper chest/shoulder. You can see this by Boomers head going downward as opposed to up or straight back if he was hit in the helmet. Now, saying that, I don't think you said Bruce did that, but it kind of comes across that way.

    i didnt see it happen. from what i saw the refs realised that if they called offsides on bruce that they were on the hook for boomer being hurt, so they called a false start to cover their ass.

      1:59 Number 67 slightly rocks back and Bruce shoots out of his stance.

      Play should've been blown dead whether it was a false start (automatic) or offsides on Smith (unabated to the QB). They just blew it!

    • @cgarnet01
      @cgarnet01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't get it. A false start has to be blown dead 100% of the time. An offside, not so. So, as I see it, a false start makes them look even worse.

    Chris is annoying in the Commentary and that type of Mentality chipped away slowly but Deliberately and led to what you have in 2021 where the Defensive Line has to count to 5 and complete a intricate series of Dance moves before making any sudden movements in the Direction of the Quarterback , and also the Dance moves have to be judged and can incur Penalties when ever they feel like throwing a Flag for whatever reason

  • @lrodnyc9047

    Boomer gets roasted about this on a monthly basis here in NYC on his talk radio morning show "Boomer & Gio"...they play the audio and the guys joke and laugh about it...he's a good sport about it. The Leonard Marshall blindside hit on Joe Montana in the 1990 NFC Title game is just as brutal. Montana looks like he saw a ghost or woke up from a year long coma when he finally walks off the field. Football back in the day was no joke. QB's & Receivers are protected now and rightfully so.

    • @bigdrew565
      @bigdrew565 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll always say that Jim Burt was as responsible for what happened to Montana as anyone else. After the hit on Hostetler, the bear was poked.

      Watch is frame by frame, .it's a lot closer to being onsides than you think... in fact, I think Bruce was onsides. He comes out of his stance before the ball was snapped, the ball is snapped by the time Smith crosses the LOS, but I think he is reacting to the LT slightly leaning back.
