This rendition was played at my son, Daniel’s, funeral. It’s as though it was written and performed for him. He was a magnificent musician. He died at age 24, and I, his mother am truly broken...I miss my Danny boy’s smile.
My grandma was a missionary in Scotland in the early 50's. She grew to love this song and often sang it to me. This morning she passed into the spirit world. Thank you Vocal Point for your beautiful rendition that I can use to remember her.
Hey Dallin. So cool of you to share the sweet sentiment you have with this song. We hope you and the family are doing well at this time. So humbling for us to hear that you have found some consolation in this song. 💙🤗
Busca. Cristo tal como el legado que te dejo tu abuela, y verás que Dios te mostrara la senda de la justicia. La verás a ella en el día de la resurrección con el favor de Dios
Ooh! This is so beautiful, I am crying. I had it sung at my father's graveside. They include the verse of song the verse that proves what I told people for years. This is not a romantic love song, but a father's song to his son going to war. My father suffered from his injuries in combat and as a Prisoner of the Gestapp and of the Wehrmacht. My stepfather was a POW, too. BYU's music is wonderful.
My mother says that when she was expecting my brother Daniel, every time she heard "Oh Danny Boy," he moved non stop. We lost our Dan yesterday and this rendition has us all profoundly overwhelmed.
Having sung this song with a choir in high school, I can attest it is hard not to cry even singing this wonderful piece. When you hear a choral song, the best seat in the house is not found in the audience. It is singing among and being surrounded by those singing it. You can feel the power of the song flowing through you from their sound vibrations. More powerful, emotional parts are louder, and you can feel it in your body better than any sound system in the world.
Well spoken!!!! I've never been to more than a few concerts where i simply watched: it's MUCH more wonderful to be a part of the music-MAKING, than to just be an observer. I've been in groups varying in size from 4 to hundreds (Brahms Requiem with gigantic choir and full orchestra - was a BLAST to be part of that!!!!), and can agree with your sentiment 100%.
“When all the valley’s hushed” background Vocals hush to pianissimo “And kneel and say an Ave there for me” background Vocals “Amen” “For you have not returned to smile again” background Vocals - “no, no, no, no” because he doesn’t want to believe it. This is the best arraigned piece I’ve heard in a very long time.
Ah jeez. I'd never heard that last verse before. I broke out crying listening to this because when my mom died last year her last wish was for me to get right with God so she could see me on the resurrection day. I miss you terribly mom. Beautiful version, guys. Thank you.
My Father died at the 10th December 2022....he was a scots man...his mother sang the Song to him when he was a little boy... Now weve heard the song at his funeral....great version!!!!
I've looked up so many versions of this song. From the 1950's, maybe earlier, all the way up to modern time. This is the ONLY version that truly got it right. That truly hit the note, not literally but figuratively. The purity and grace. The love, the power, the righteousness. The wholeness. No other even touches this. And it's BYU!!!! I'm beyond impressed. I'm thankful.
There was a gentleman in the late 50's or early 60's who would sing this song on Lawrence Welk Show. I can still hear his voice but I cannot remember his name.
Michael londra’s is my absolute favorite. Sorry but groups tend to focus on the ‘artistic’ style of the notes like these guys. Michael focused on tve emotions. But everyone is different
Byu are amazing .. anything byu OS so blessed .. I love everything byu stands for .. vocal point are just so talented too ... I live in England UK and wear my byu sport shirt with so much pride .. some ppl dont even know what it means .. so i tell them and then I also give them book of mormon too .
Oh man, I remember my dad singing this to me before going out to the Gulf again... I have never been so happy nor cried so much as when he came home safely.
My grandfather served in WWII and Vietnam and passed away due to natural causes in 2014. At our family reunion, all 7 of his children surprised him by singing this, his favorite song. He passed peacefully 4 days later. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. It has been five years and I still cannot listen to this song without crying.
Men like your grandfather did more for the rest of us than people would like to admit. My family came to America after WW1. My great grandfather a Russian born German with a Jewish wife. They saw the way things were turning and got out, but so many weren't so lucky and many others that didn't would have suffered if not for people like your grandfather. You are obviously proud of him and you have every right to be. Allow me to join you in that pride, may he rest in peace knowing he is appreciated.
I seriously cannot get over the 3rd verse. It's so moving. It matches the tone of the original poem so well, whilst still being hauntingly beautiful. Amazing addition to an already iconic song. Well done, Keith Evans.
A famous poem, and deservedly so. And this rendition of this piece is the best I have ever heard. Period. The lead singer believes what he sings, and couples that with a deep musicality. Thank you for this performance. There are three or four videos on TH-cam that I come back to over and over -- and this is one of them.
I have been very depressed lately and I turned on this song and just remembered who I still have to live for. I didn't know what else to do with life and I was about to just give up, but this song just comes to mind and I sing along with it and I just break down and relax. You guys are amazing singers and are very inspirational. I am thinking about joining choir again because of you guys. Love what you guys sound like together. Thanks for years of inspiration and great music.🙂
This version of Danny Boy has now spoiled me for all other versions I know. Other covers, arrangements done by any choir I've been in...every time I sing/listen to them now I'm like, "Eh, lacks a certain power, emotion..." just because this version is SO DAMN GOOD.
I want this played at my funeral Here's another (Apocryphal) third verse "But if I live, and should you die for Ireland, Let not your dying thoughts be just of me. But say a prayer to God for our dearest Ireland. I know he'll hear and help to set her free. And I will take your pike and place my dearest, And strike a blow, though weak the blow may be. T'will help the cause to which your heart was nearest Oh Danny Boy, Oh, Danny boy I love you so.
We had a son that we lost at age 17 named Danny. When I am a sad mom and missing him I listen to all of your beautiful voices and I feel better and I feel the comfort and calming of the spirit.
Certainly the most powerful and beautiful version of this song I have ever heard! Moving is not a word nearly forceful enough to describe the performance. I am 71 years old and couldn't hold back.
I'd only ever heard two verses. Imagine my surprise to hear a third that had me weeping. Even more impressive given that it was written by one of these fine fellows.
That was an incredible and haunting version of one of the most famous songs in history. Having lived in Ireland, the scenery in Utah looks like Hades in comparison. It made the voices even more heavenly in contrast.
This song reminds me of my mom. She passed away in 2012, but some of my earliest memories as a kid was her singing this song to me. This will forever be my all time favorite song because of her. I miss you so much momma bear.
I m an Irish descendant; this song runs deep in our culture. My father’s best friend was a fine Irish tenor, and this tune often graced the air around him. It was a jewel in his vast repertoire. There were never finer friends nor better mortals to walk the earth than that lovely family. Cancer tore him from us when he was far too young. I can seldom listen to this song without years of gratitude for his wonderful memory, and thought as I listened to the first verse, that I had finally found one that I could get through. But then you brought in the second verse. So still no version of this song I can listen to without getting all emotional, But I’m glad I heard it. That second verse, is worthy even of the original rendition. It’s not every day that somebody finds a way to truly make this song more than it was. Thank you.
My mother-in-law was first generation Irish born in this country and hearing this always makes me think of her. This is by far a version that she would have loved. Amazing!!
This is the only rendition of Danny Boy I've ever enjoyed. All the others just seem to be so slow and dragging, and have the feel that they've sung it so many times that the song has lost its meaning. This doesn't have those qualities. It's absolutely amazing.
I'am Danny Boy in short Dani.First time I heard this song last April 6,2016 afternoon. When my wifi cut off, unfinished to heard. But its too enough for me to cry, very beautiful and meaningful song.I truly cried.
I just can't say how beautiful this song is... I've loved this song for a very long time, and this is the most beautiful rendition I've heard!! Thank you Vocal Point for your uplifting music! And Keith for one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard...
I've been asked to give a tribute at my cousin's funeral. And, I plan to sing this song coz I don't have any words. Just 21 and already gone just listening to different renditions has me in tears.
This is so beautiful! For someone who has 9 1/2 years of choral experience, I've actually never heard this song until now and I wouldn't have even known that the third verse wasn't part of the traditional piece. This was so well-done. Have it on repeat.
This group is AMAZING!!!!! I have goose bumps all over my body. Thank you thank you for lifting my spirit. My aunt just passed and is helping me feel at peace.
After all the times I've listened to this arrangement, I just now read the story -- and the additional lyrics!!! WOW!!! I've sung this song at funerals and it is always powerful, but if I ever have the opportunity again, it will not be without the new and meaningful verse added here!!! Can't believe I didn't pay attention before now. This is so incredibly moving! Fantastic job all of you (years ago), but especially McKay and Keith! Your souls and inspiration are shining through!!
this song is incredible! I have listened to it many times over, and never with dry eyes. The leading vocalist has such emotion in his voice- just amazing!
This is a stunning version of this song. I found out years ago that an elderly gentleman I greatly admired had this song as his favorite. Best composition of it I have ever heard. And I heard in person an irish chamber choir sing Danny Boy. This tops them all.
OMG when a wonderful song with such talent is mixed.....tears flow easily and I am not ashamed of that. Great rendition I have heard and saved and listen to over and over again.
"In sunshine or in shadows" ... what this song means and represents in my life is significant but to hear our friends' son singing it, I am tearfully so touched, words couldn't possibly express. Such a talent you all have; indeed a gift from on high. Love this and will keep it close always!
Keith Evans might be one of the greatest vocalists of all time! His perfromance on this song is phenomenal. One of the greatest sound my ear has ever heard.
@@SarafinaSummersYeah! I had the privilege to meet him cause he's the current Choir teacher at West Jordan high School in Utah. He's an incredibly kind man and is still amazingly talented to this day.
Thinking of the Mother's in CT who sent their children off to school yesterday, I found catharsis in the words. "So if you've died and crossed the stream before us, we pray that angels met you on the shore, and you'll look down and gently you'll implore us, to live so that we may see your smiling face once more." Thanks Vocal Point for such a moving performance!
Love this arrangement and the added verse does credit to the song and completes it beautifully as an interpretation of father's love for his son. Wonderful.
The angelic voices of a talented choir are something one shouldn't sneeze at. I'm so happy to have found this version. It's absolutely gorgeous! Thank you!
Being of Irish heritage this song always hits a very tender spot in my heart (given that it's never played during good times) but it's a connection I still get to keep with my loved ones who've passed on. It's just a shame I can't make it more than seconds before breaking down like a child.
In general, I try to avoid listening to this song, due to the fact that it has been sung in some very sad situations, but your version has definitely changed my attitude about it! It was beautiful, and although it gave me goosebumps, I had a happy feeling while listening to it, as opposed to sad feelings. It made my day! Thank you for sharing this!!!!! :)
so inspirational... this song is so comforting. my ancestors are from Ireland... this song takes me back to a simple time ... the pipes will call me one day and I will leave my "Danny Boy"... thanks
This rendition was played at my son, Daniel’s, funeral. It’s as though it was written and performed for him. He was a magnificent musician. He died at age 24, and I, his mother am truly broken...I miss my Danny boy’s smile.
So very sorry for your hurt Marilee, and the profound and heartbreaking loss of your son.
Oh, Marilee, I'm so sorry for your loss. No mother should have to bury a child. :-(
So sorry to hear your sad story..
My deepest condolences for your loss.
I'm so sorry for your pain. May God keep you wrapped in his warm embrace.

Okay one more comment... since I can't seem to stop listening to this. It's just heavenly. It even lulled my son to sleep last night. Just angelic.
Never once had Danny boy not brought me to tears...whoever may sing it...but apart from the Celtic Women, this is one of the best I've heard.

one of the best "Danny-Boy" acapella piece I ever heard. Spectaculare Boy-Group!
Keith Evans is very close to the perspective of the song. It is a song sung by a grandfather to his grandson. It is the purest form of brotherly love.

It was beautiful, and although it gave me goosebumps, I had a happy feeling while listening to it, as opposed to sad feelings. It made my day! Thank you for sharing this!!!!! :)
Its BYU they have a gift of doing that lol i agree
My mom used to sing this to me all the time! I love this song and have loved it for a while ever since I was younger
Absolutely Perfect! Y'all are amazing! Keep singing for God!
This is so beautiful and calming! The solo guy has an amazing and beautiful voice. I wish he would sing to me every night.

One more in their collection of impeccable performances. I have only once heard his great work done better. Thank You and God Bless you , one and all.
This is, hands down, THE best rendering of “Danny Boy” I have ever heard; so much feeling and emotion from the lead’s phrasing- no instruments needed!
