    This is a way better solution than using Sonos. And it doesn't even require that much more effort getting set up.
    Top three reasons for getting Chromecast over Sonos:
    1. OMG the price difference!
    2. Wider ecosystem of apps for streaming. Sonos only support its own app which integrates (sometimes badly) with other apps...
    3. Use the speaker hardware you already own.

    • @rabbidpotatoegaming4514
      @rabbidpotatoegaming4514 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But if someone has no speakers then I'm sure Sonos can be just as cheap for full house at just 150$ a speaker.

    • @TwoAPTMLMusicProductions
      @TwoAPTMLMusicProductions 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rabbidpotatoegaming4514 Yeah, $150 for their smallest speaker that is the size of my google home? Hell no. You can buy a great set of bookshelf speakers and a chromecast for that amount and would probably sound better. Will definitely be louder and have more bass.

      christian jensen Can't stream your own library with CC? It's quite easy to do with Plex. I'm sure there are other options, too. Plex works great for streaming your own library. I used it just the other day for that Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown album. Granted, I usually just use my Google Play Music subscription. Check out Plex, it's a wonderful program for organizing and playing all your media. It even has a Roku app.

    I was looking for a solution like this a few years ago but had the same experiences you mentioned. I ended up going with an FM transmitter module on my main audio source, which currently is Amazon Fire TV streaming Spotify and sometime Pandora. This worked well for my situation because I have a lot of tabletop radios throughout the rooms of my house and garage. Radios such as Tivoli and Bose. I even have one vintage Pioneer receiver in my office and bought a couple ebay cheapy vintage Sony tabletop radios for the backyard.
    The advantages of this system is that I have no syncing/paring to worry about - ever. No extra modules or wires to add to each receiver. And I can have unlimited number of receivers.

    I'm a foodie and a working musician; great sound quality is essential for me and I really like what you've started here. Thank you. Music in the kitchen is the biggest advantage for me when I'm in recreational music mode, and having streaming throughout the house during a dinner party is very effective. My guests always ask how I do it and now I can refer them to your solutions too. I'm using Airport Express units pretty much exactly like you're using the pucks and helping the whole thing along with Airfoil. I agree that Airfoil has synch issues but for me, those were only a problem when I tried to mix Apple gear with anything else like Android or bluetooth devices. Blame Apple I suppose but I like that you're offering a low-cost option for in-synch streaming. My two-cents worth is that Airport Express units can be found used/cheap and if utilised in a Mac-only environment can produce a completely satisfactory result. Thanks again.

    A few things. First, awesome house. Second, awesome theater room. I really love the mood lighting and how you even have the couch lit up. Third, don't forget the quality of the audio also depends on the quality of the audio hardware/speakers. I don't want people complaining their music sounds bad because they're playing it on $20 dollar speakers they got from a garage sale. (Those people do exist, lol). Lastly, I do hope you consider using video Chromecast devices in your setups. With them, you can hook them up to the audio receivers via HDMI add them into that Home group you're using in this video.

      thanks a lot mike, glad you were liking the digs. as far as video chromecasts, i might play around with one to see how they sync up, but i'm already more invested in the apple side of things for videos as i use apple tv's and me and my girl use iphones already

Because of the price of Sonos it has taken me years to get the 4 zones in my house - I could have done this solution, including the cost of powered speakers for less than the cost of a Sonos play5. My son kitted out our house with Chromecast Audio, with zones for kitchen, lounge, office, and outside ... and (as a bonus) our bedroom TV and his bedroom TV are also Chromecast compatible ... you can pass audio to them too. We had heaps of old Logitech 2:1 speaker sets, some old AV gear, which turned a handfull of hockey pucks into a clever system. Not perfect though ... sometimes there is a sync issue ... not very often. Great demo ... cheers and thanks! My $0.02

      excellent matthew, you got a good son! btw, in the settings in the google home app, you can adjust the sync timing for each cc audio if it gets off, i have this problem sometimes with the soundbar in my living room i think because it undergoes some DSP, but i moved the delay slider and it fixed it

      I use Audible on my Pixel phone, in the drop down for android there's a cast icon that will cast anything on the phone to chromecast displays or speakers. Vizio has displays and speaker systems with chromecast built in so that's how I do it. Maybe there's something similar available with IOS? I don't know anything about iphones.

      Apple is all about the future and moving on from the past. "Think Different" . The future is entirely wireless systems. It really is more convenient that way. You wouldn't catch apple making this kind of device. He would not need this set up if he had newer hi-fi wireless systems which currently cost $$$$ for a multi room set up. Google however, tends to jump on the opportunity to make a money on easy solutions. I think its crazy that a device like this has not been around for years. yeah you still gotta kind of do that for the most part. i actually keep all my speakers on (well at least in the garage and basement), but that will change in the future, since i only use my basement speakers for music at the moment. but yeah i mean in the end you will typically have to end up switching your speakers/audio components over to the chromecast unless you have dedicated speakers just always on and that input selected. i don't really know of any good way around this for any reasonable price ha

    Don't you think they could have built the audio into the regular chromecast devices, just include a stereo jack, then they wouldn't have to produce two devices. Both the Audiocast and the regular chromecast cost the same I think, it blows my mind they didn't just merge them. Also, have you tried out the speakers with built in chromecast? I just got the Vizio 360 crave and think it's pretty great, it's portable and sounds good.

    • @fabulousfabrications1985
      @fabulousfabrications1985 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Len Harms they do not cost the same the audio one is like 30-35$
      The video one is like 45 - 50
      If they made it do both it would cost like 60-70 $???

    • @LenHarms
      @LenHarms 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're both $35, on sale right now for $25. The Chromecast Ultra which runs 4k video is $69. The regular chromecast has an HDMI output, they could simply add a 3.5mm port to it or just make a low cost HDMI -> 3.5mm adapter. Making one device would cost less in manufacturing than making two devices and so the price could probably remain relatively the same. This is U.S. prices, I don't know where you're getting your prices from. www.store.google.com

    Nice video. I happened to just get a chromecast audio myself since it was free when you purchase it with a Google Home. I wanted to replace the Echo and Echo Dot (they are so bad. It can rarely answer questions correctly, thinks commands are questions, may or may not do the commands it supports, and triggers on words and even sounds that are not even remotely similar to the trigger words - which then causes it to listen to what is being said and then doesn't know how to answer the "question".) since I wanted to be able to play audio from any of my devices to the speaker system in the living room. I noticed it had whole home support and knew that would be awesome once I have a bigger place and have multiple sound systems.
    Btw, I don't know if anyone else noticed that you had ElectricSheep rocking as your screensaver. I LOVE it so much, especially as something to look at while listening to music (even though it isn't a visualizer it usually works surprisingly well).

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh man free chromecast with the home thats a great deal. interesting the issues you were having with the echos, i actually prefer mine over the home, although the home is awesome for queing up music verbally to all the chromecasts. maybe i like the echo just because i had it first, but for the most part i don't find that it answers many more questions vs the echo, especially search queries that i thought it would be more useful for (since generally i need to see search results to be useful).....great call on the electric sheep btw, great app!

    • @mjcusack
      @mjcusack 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that was the biggest frustration with the Echoes, but the biggest deal breaker was the difference of GHome understanding natural language and, more importantly, context. Alexa just uses static commands that it looks up in a database so if you don't say it in a specific, formal manner then it doesn't understand what you meant. GHome understands that not everyone is going to say the same thing in the same way and even the same person will have variances in the same query. Regarding context you tend to want to ask follow-up questions if you are giving it a fact-based question. Say you want to find a sushi place near you. You can ask both where the closest one is, but then if you ask it questions about a particular result GHome will understand what you mean where Alexa will say it doesn't know the answer to the question. Regarding what you said about needing to see search results to be useful, that is dependent on the type of search you are doing and in that case neither will be helpful.

  • @smokeduv
    @smokeduv 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    You CAN use various Apple TVs in the same wireless network, but you need a Mac (iTunes lets you use multiple audio sources if they allow Airplay). Using an Apple TV to use it with a Windows PC is not ideal, in the same way as using Chromecast with a Mac as you may lose many features. The major drawbacks of this are that they are not so cheap, they are bigger than the chromecast audio and you can't broadcast to multiple devices with an iphone or the TV interface, as far as I know, but I'll look if there's some option in it, which I doubt.

    • @smokeduv
      @smokeduv 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have checked it already and you can stream music to all AirPlay devices without the Mac and using the Apple TV interface, so you can also control it from the iPhone if you use the Remote app or just sending the music to the Apple TV

  • @timojissink4715
    @timojissink4715 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This works better than sonos, we have a sonos system in our home but first of all you'll have to make use of the streaming abilities that sonos provides. Secondly when you unplug one of your speakers you might find that the music stops playing 'cause all of a sudden he cant find one of them. and lastly making the connection with your home network is quite a hazel and it doesn't work automatically.

      I've tried them and they're pretty crap. Very cheap - true, but the range is very low and you get noticeable noise with distance. It's bearable when running in a mono setup, but in stereo there's just too much noise. Plus its illegal in some countries. ;) This looks like a much better solution.

    the 3.5 mm on your party speaker is completely tense, if this was my setup i'd attach it with velcro to the speaker so the cable isn't potentially damaging the chrome cast, and it looks pretty precarious, and things will probably get knocked over at parties

    Thank you for the review. I had actually considered a similar setup a while back where I was planning on placing Vanatoo's around the house but as I was having to buy all new speakers anyway, I actually took the Sonos route especially as I managed to get a hefty discount. For my media room upstairs I will use the Chromecast Audio with an optical cable if I want to just sit and listen to really detailed music as that is a full surround setup with Energy RC70's for the front with a Rythmik F12SE for the sub. I really had no need to integrate the two floors. Downstairs if a Playbar, PlaySub, Play5, and a Play1. I wouldn't mind a couple additional speakers here or there but I just didn't have anything sitting around that I could easily place and not have a wife aggro factor. If I had extra speakers handing around the Chromecast Audio really is a no brainer. I use Google Play Music so not too concerned about having the highest FLAC level available at this point in time, but that may change.

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      nice setup man. yeah if i was starting from scratch, no speakers, i'd probably go sonos route as well. you got a great surround setup sounds like, those tower speakers are nice, i'm hoping to go with tower speakers as well in my media room. thansk for the comment!

    the "echo" is actually physics happening. sound travels at 340m/s so it takes a little while for the sound to come from the basement to your room.
