Great job. That joint coming apart is making me think about getting the tamiya florine coated cross joint as an upgrade and then having a bunch of spare cross joint and pins on hand. PN 42357
Well I’ve continued with the ones I have, it’s actually been back to the track now and probably put in another couple of hundred laps without any issues 😊😊😊
Would love to see you do a similar project with a more higher end Tamiya kit like a Top Force Evo. Would love to see a track performance comparison with the TT02B.

So true on the CV joints Glenn, I've had this happen before, now I am in the habit of disassembling any CV that comes assembled, cleaning with brake cleaner, reassemble with Loctite, cure 24hrs then re-lube and refit. They can do quite a lot of damage while they fall apart!
p.s. - those cheap alu CV shafts have done well so far! & that 10.5 should be PLENTY.

cogging with uncensored motors usually means over geared.

Thanks for including the info about the set screw coming loose on that rear universal shaft. I have a very similar tt02b with almost the same hop ups, and I have those exact same shafts. Now I know I need to take them out and put thread lock on the set screws. You probably saved me from that same thing happening to me. 👍

I put heat shrink over the barrel containing the pin to keep it in place. This works great for me. Hope it helps you.

@plops do it, finish the racing fighter! I love mine, it has all the nostalgia of a driving a classic 2wd tamiya like a fox, with none of the fear of breaking it! A brushless combo in it and it's great fun to drive. Even a 13.5t sensored motor on the standard Tamiya speed control is a nice upgrade in speed and battery life.

It goes well Glenn. That grub screw/pin coming lose is a fairly common cockup. I think it happened to me test driving a 2nd hand B4 that I’d picked up. It happens.

Tires and gears will do more for you running on that track than putting in a sensored brushless and ESC. A 22T spur would be right at the fringe of what you’d likely want on a TT-02B but is considered “too slow” for a standard TT-02. (Type S cars run 27T pinion and 68T spurs stock, in case you’re wondering.)
The 10.5 TBLM-02S can take a 64/22 gear combo (64 Spur/22 pinion) but don’t forget the fan unit or it’ll brown out. I use a 68T spur and a 27T pinion.
Also, use the Yeah Racing motor mount instead because you can get better gearing from 48P gears and even 64P gears (and because 06 Mod gears are hard to get).
As far as U-joint issues, I’ve had the same issue in my Yeah Racing RWD drift TT-02. The rear axles are adjustable and those 3x2mm grub screws like working themselves out even with thread lock. I use Loctite blue gel (Loctite 242, I think) because I don’t want to use red because red is like liquid weld and I still need to remove the screws. Perhaps it’s likely the threads are too short for the Loctite to do its job (as I’ve heard many have said over the years; “Loctite needs x amount of threads to work properly”) or maybe I’ve not applied it correctly or the gel is different than the liquid… I don’t know but so far I’ve run them for about an hour (on a 5000mah NiMH) and they haven’t decided to work loose yet. Best advice: check them after every run. If you go 10 laps at the track, check them when you come back into the pit.

Hey Glenn. Have been really enjoying this series because I've been working on a TT02b myself. I absolutely love this car because there's so many things that you can do with it. I appreciate you giving the heads up about the UJ's because I have thr exact same ones. Thanks to your video, the first thing I will be doing when I get home next week is pulling them and checking those grub screws. Like you, I never gave it a thought. Thank you for the info. Great video Glenn. Just goes to show you not to believe the stereotypical comments about the entry level Tamiyas. They are what you make of it. Can’t wait to see how the upgrades improve the car on the track. I bet they will be superb.

I really thing the gearing was the problem at the track Glenn. Yes the motor combo is cheap, i have several of them as well as other way more expensive ones. But if a relatively high KV sensorless motor is geared up to that point, it will always be slow taking off and it will be "cogging" as you hit the throttle and initial acceleration will be affected.
Put a smaller pinion on and it will boost off those jumps, you need to match the gearing to the track.
Also, get a program card for that combo, the default punch setting is often fairly low, which really limits acceleration from a low speed.
When it's turned right up, those motors can really fly, but they really need to operate in their efficient RPM range, and gearing it for 57kmh and driving at 15kmh isn't helping at all.
People love to bash on these cheap motors, but often lack the understanding as to why they are not getting the most out of their setup.

Yeah I’ll have to politely disagree with you my friend, I’ve now run this car at the track again with the Tamiya brushless combo and the correct tyres, I didn’t change anything else and the car was off the chart. By the end of the day I was putting in lap times that would put me in the C final. And there was still a ton of improvement to be made to my driving lol 😂
But with all that said, yes maybe if I go back again I could definitely play with the gearing and maybe squeeze some more lap times 😇😇😇
@@TAMIYALegends no worries Glenn, thanks for the reply. But i think in a way you have proven my point. The lower KV rating of the Tamiya combo you were talking of, 10.5t wasn't it? Would be much better suited to that gearing you had on the car at the time.
What is the top speed of that car now with the Tamiya brushless? I'm guessing 35 to 40kmh?
You are using this range of speed at the track and the motor is in its efficient speed/rpm range.
Cheap brushless motors don't like being overgeared and then driving slowly.

Awesome video here again Glenn love the speed runs, and wow its getting on at 70+kmh, and i too have had issues with CV Uni's coming loose and also some i have bought on ebay where bad from the get go as couldn't tighten up the grub screw to stop the pin from falling out and trying to undo it only stripped the grub out so i wont be buying cheap ebay knock offs again ill stil to the ones with the wire wrap around and lock tight the grub with the smallest amount in case they come loose again , i found its when you get up and past 60 KMH this started to happen to me and this was only with a HSP Modified to the hilt on 3S too , Thanks again for another great video budd. :-)

Excellent series of videos, I've loved the Project Performance vids mate👍 Where I race locally, one guy has managed to fit 64DP gears to his TT02, and the damn thing is ballistic. It's on-road, indoors on carpet, but it might be worth looking into that option. I know he had to mod the chassis slightly for the 64DP gears, but don't count it out!! Can't wait to see the follow-up video!!
It's not a big problem to use 64dp in the TT-02. You have to change the motor mount for an after market stepless adjustable one, e.g. the Yeah Racing one. The High Speed Gear Set accepts 64dp spur gears from various brands without modification. And then you are good to go. With the stock gear cover and above mods you are able to gear down to approx. 4.2:1 or something about that. This ist half the ratio Glenn is using in his Car!

Absolutely, these after market motor mounts are one of the most useful upgrades for the TT-02 Cars. You can use whatever pinion/ Spur Gear combo you want to, of course as long as it fits mechanically.

I have not had the chance to mount a GPS to mine, but I am running my TT-02B with a 3000KV HW combo on 3S, with a 68T spur and 29T pinion...I hopefully can get a GPS on to it shortly!

The universal should sit inside a bearing where the pin is slotted it. You don't even need a grub screw with this design.
As for sensor and sensorless, it really shouldn't be enough to entirely impact whether you make or jump or not. It will make low throttle input smooth and more precise, but for the few milliseconds of the motor obtaining less accurate control, it shouldn't do a lot. I'm not saying it won't help, but it shouldn't, if the new motor and esc were identical other than sensored, make a night and day difference.
The main issue is traction and/or change in acceleration. If traction is poor, you'll be slowing down a lot for a turn, bleeding speed (and perhaps getting to an rpm that is closer to cogging for sensorless) and needing more acceleration to make up for it. The poor traction will also hurt acceleration once around the turn.
You could also look into suspension and diff changes to allow for better off throttle cornering, and on throttle straight line traction. Perhaps thinner front diff fluid and thicker rear shock fluid. The thicker rear shock fluid will alter the impulse of the shock, allowing force to increase traction to the rear, rather than causing compression of the spring. Thinner front diff fluid will allow the front to have easier differential action, especially when braking and off throttle, and this will induce more oversteer. It could cause the vehicle to spin out more, especially when adding throttle when still in the turn, but it will bite more off throttle on a corner, allowing higher speed without the front sliding and pushing the car to the outside of a turn

If you haven't already, switch the diffs before going to the track. Do it so that your front diff is open and your rear is the one that ls limited.
A 10.5 will be nore than enough for that small track. Tires are the only thing to touch the surface. So if the tires are not right nothing else will be either.

can the tt02b be converted back into a drift, rally or touring car instead of buying 4 different cars i just want one that i can use on different platforms i don't mind buying all the different parts to do the conversions i have a tt01-e chassis but parts are starting to become rare for that chassis and i think the tt02 is just a bit longer

Just one remark from my side. The wheel hubs of the onroad TT-02 do not fit the TT-02 B. They are completely different.

I dont think you need a censored motor, I have many cheap motor/esc combos and all of them will jump off the line like no tomorrow. Its all in the gearing and on that carpet track you dont need top end speed bit low end punch. Put a smaller pinion on it and you will be good to go traction willing.
