Project Tamiya TT02B Rebuild - How To Make an Old RC Like New On a Budget + Tips!

  • This week I have mostly been rebuilding my awesome Tamiya TT-02B Neo Scorcher. It's about 6 or 7 years old and has been severely used and abused over the years. In this video I show you what wears out on the TT02B and how to repair or replace it on a budget.
    All the parts were refurbished where possible or replaced by spares from my parts bin.
    The body was beyond recovery so I replaced it with a cheap replica body set from Kamtek, see what you think of the quality for half the price of the Tamiya set.
    I also try to add a few hints and tips along the way.
    I was really hoping that this project wasn't going to turn into a "Trigger's Broom" like Mikael's recent DF02 refurb ‪@NordicRC‬ !!! :D
    Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the refurb!

    Nice work, Mark! And good job filming and explaining. Looks fantastic. As good as new or even better. Ha ha, yeah, not quite yet a Triggers Broom 😅 But maybe some day. Great idea shining the buggy that was with you on the RC Hobby Mark II beginning. Don’t Alf got one too from back then? Or maybe that was a Viper. Anyways. I enjoyed watching the project! Best to you my friend.

      Hi mate! 👋 Thanks so much for your kind comments 😊 But yes I got so much pride and pleasure from doing this rebuild, it feels good to make something right again! Hehe, yeah Pete was telling me about sharing the Triggers Broom story with you. 😀👍I don't think this buggy qualifies yet! Yes, Alf has a Neo Scorcher, too, we got them together ❤ So I will refurbish his too, soon. Glad you enjoyed it my good friend, best wishes to you too. 😎🙌👍

    Hi Mark, it's really surprising how many issues an RC can get after several years of heavy use, but I think you must have covered everything with all these upgrades. I must say the Kamtec shell is excellent and who would know the difference ? What a strange quirk with the blue paint. I totally love the end product shell, that is really cool especially those GoPro stickers. They really do make the buggy look unique and extra special. A brilliant touch. Never throw anything out. Nice one mate, this process must have been really satisfying. I bet it feels like you have a brand new car. Here's to the first run 2.0...😀👋😀👋. Have a great weekend.......if you can avoid melting alive...🤯.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hiya mate! Hope you ain't melting, too - TBH it's not too bad in my front room, it's the nights I find most uncomfortable.
      Yeah, I think I checked everything, as you know, this buggy has had severe use over the years and I was amazed how good most of the components were - the corrosion on those pins is my fault for running in salt water. Yeah, the metallic blue was worrying me at first, other colours of this brand have been fine. Glad you approve of the livery, just spare bits and bobs I've collected over the years. I think we are both hoarders! Yes, it was a pleasure to see this car back to it's former glory, can't wait to run it. Oh yes, it shall be recorded! A super weekend to you too, dude! :))

    watching this while building a new TT02BR, the last time I drove an RC car was 30 years ago, a two wheel drive tamiya buggy with IC engine! can't wait to see what this little thing can do, I'm impressed with the components and think it will be a lovely little flyer.

    Ouyeah, that's great! Now I feel like going working on my TT-02B also, ha ha! Lots of repairs in there, I'm sure it must be handling really nicely after everything can move freely again.
    I had the exact same issue with a similar blue paint I'm using also, just like you I thought I had bought metallic paint. What I found is that paint become two really different colours, depending if you back it with white or black. It definitely pops on yours!
    So I take it we see a nice fresh running video sometime soon?
    Nice Saturday morning entertainment, this, have a great weekend there, mate!

    • @MarkBryanRC

      Hi Mads. Oh yes it was a great feeling to bring this neglected buggy back to life, I hadn't realised just how bad it was. It just shows how important it is to perform regular checks and maintenance. But with so many RC cars I find it difficult to get the time to do as much as I should. Just got Alf's Neo to do at some point as well.
      Yeah, the paint annoyed me because there is no indication on the tin that it needs to be backed, I thought it was going to be similar to Tamiya PS-16!!!!
      Definitely will do a first run MkII with this beauty! Looking forward to trying it out.
      Hope your weekend was good, now go and have a great week ahead, mate! :O)

    Hi there my good friend Mark, and there is a lesson to all of us. How to make a really decent TT-02B better and looking like new again, using the minimum of £’s and being very thrifty. The Absima metallic blue looks terrific too. I’ve used the Absima grey on my latest build project and the paint is very good. That buggy really looks amazing and you’ve performed a miraculous transformation. Great work my friend, really enjoyed and learnt a couple of things too. Take care and best wishes to you and the family 😁😉😊

      Absolutely, mate, I'm happy with the Kamtec bodies and have a few of them, the Escort Cosworth Turbo body set is my favourite. TBH this refurb took a lot longer than building a new kit! Well worth the effort, though! Many thanks for popping over, all the best from Mark... :O)

  • @sullybiker6520
    @sullybiker6520 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That looks absolutely fantastic. I don't own any 'new' Tamiya cars apart from the re-releases, but I remain impressed with the advances in design. The tub is great, and the enclosed battery (something I dearly wish the older cars had; I've damaged a few terminal wires while bashing) plus relatively simple transmission...it's all very impressive. The paint job looks amazing and I'm glad you got the paint result you wanted. Also those yellow wheels look 😍😍
    The salt is something I always wonder about on the beach runs (I'm 400 miles from a beach...) and I'm very familiar with the corrosion on my motorbike from the road salt here. When it's mixed with meltwater it gets into everything and the top few mm of fasteners usually look like they've been at the bottom of the Atlantic! This winter I want to bash the hotshot about in the snow and will probably give it a good spray of ACF-50, a non-conductive fluid which is great for protecting exposed metal parts.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there and thanks for the great comment 👍 😀 Yeah the TT02 is a great chassis and it's well thought out. I was pleased with the paint 🎨 results in the end! It's not too bad running on the beach as long as you can give it a good wash afterwards, but I must gave missed a few places!!! I used to ride a motorbike in the winter, I know what you mean about the plated metal parts corroding. I used a similar spray product too! Cheers 🍻 👊👍

    Hey Mark, I like this rebuild my friend. It was such a well used RC with great history (got you back into the hobby!) The mix between, used, broken, corroded and like new was surprising during the break down. As I watched I thought- USE SILVER to back up that beautiful blue, but I have to say the white paint was the best choice. On film the first coats looked good. The body turned out bright and lively. Always enjoy your vids. Cool that you can reach into parts boxes that are years old and find most of what you need. Take care👍🏾

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul! Yes, this buggy has been thrashed to within an inch of it's life! So there were some newer hop-ups on there and some of the original beat-up parts, too. I really should have checked those screw-pins before, but never expected them to corrode like that.
      I think silver would have worked just as well on the blue paint. If I'd known the blue was translucent, I'd have sprayed less coats and it would have been even brighter with the white backing. Glad you approve of the final effect. Oh man, I have so many boxes of spare, left-over parts from the 30ish kits I've built - never throw anything away! Take care too my friend, I hope your family are well! :O)

    Recently got a TT02 type S (well, two - one for me and one for my son). I'm the type that would strip the car after every race weekend and after only 3 tear downs I noticed 2 screw threads had given up. There's some advise out there on using shavings of plastic heated up, glue, locktite etc but I swapped out the screws for hex head machine threaded ones and this improved things. I sure wish I heard of your tip on back turning until the click however, as I also own a Tamiya F201 which has quite a few threads gone in the same manner.
    I always used to run Team Associated cars - having threads go was never an issue on their models (aside from the lower suspension screw on the B4). I guess the Tamiya plastic or threads of their screws isn't as forgiving.
    Anyway, great video Mark as always. I tend to have your vids playing as background noise when I work as it satisfies the RC itch until I can break off and tinker with my own cars.
    For anyone considering it, the TT02 is a fantastic car by the way. I built mine and my sons type-S and ran them at our local track on the stock silver can with a ton of 13.5t brushless cars. I wouldn't say the TT02 slaughtered them, but it held its own against cars with much greater power and racing pedigree (got 3rd in the A-final!!). I do have a 13.5t brushless to go in, but the satisfaction of beating a Schumacher or X-Ray with a bog standard Tamiya is too good :)

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, Mike and thanks for the very interesting comment. Oh yes, I have learned the hard way about back-threading screws, many a hole has been ruined in the past. But turning back until the click, you should be able to re-use the holes many times with no issues.
      Great to hear you play my vids as background noise, keep it going, it all help my little channel!!!
      I totally age about the TT02, I also have the Type-S and live it to bits! Cool to hear how well you have done on the track with them - well done on the 3rd place! Happy RCing, all the best my friend! :)

    Hiya matey. Hey that was really interesting. These types of project are very satisfying especially when you can use a load of bits you had already. I'm always amazed at the spares I've accumulated. With the paint I think that the Tamiya metallic colours always need a backing too but that one was especially see through. Body looks great with those GoPro stickers on. You never know they might send you a free camera for all the advertising 😁 Haha it's funny that Mikael has remembered me telling him about Trigger's broom. I don't think that this project qualifies as there is still plenty of the original car there. I'm sure that it runs as well as it looks. I'd be interested to know how well the paint sticks to the body as I find it flakes off the Kamtec ones a bit easier. Hope you are ok in all this crazy heat. Hey did you see anything of the commonwealth games? That was just up the road wasn't it? Anyway take it easy my friend 😁

      Hi Pete! Good to know I'm not the only one with so many spare bits and bobs, I think some folk thought I'd actually bought all this stuff for the project! I never throw anything away! I should have shown that blue up against the light, after half a 150ml can it was still almost transparent!
      Haha, GoPro sending something for free would be cool! Not in a million years though, mate.
      Yeah, I also had a chat with Mikael about Trigger's Broom. It's the kind of story that sticks in your head, I think. But definitely this buggy has has less than the equivalent of 7 handles and 14 heads!!! =D
      Hope the paint don't flake, TBH my blitzer Kamtec shell has been fine.
      Didn't see any of the Games live but saw it on TV. Up to £100 a ticket for some events - I'd rather buy another Tamiya for that money!!! The closing ceremony was awesome, it's on iPlayer if you missed it.
      Anyway, thanks for always leaving a thoughtful comment, always a pleasure, mate - have a great week - cheers! :O)

    6:50 Had exactly the same experience with that Absima paint. I went and got black and white cans just cause you need it so often and I was hoping I could use them for more than one body unlike with the PS paints. Seems they don't cover well and for some reason the paint is very rough, so velcro doesn't stick properly if you wanted to secure the body that way. Will stick to tamiya paint I suppose. Your body ended up looking great though anyway.
    Cheers, Robert

      Hi Robert! Yeah, seems we are not alone with our experience of Absima paint. I also always keep a spare tin of silver, white and black for backing other paint with. I agree that this stuff doesn't cover as well as Tamiya PS paint. Mine doesn't seem to be rough, though. Glad you liked the way the buggy turned out. All the best, Robert.

    Hi mark we did speak some time back over this car. I want to buy a neo scorcher for speed running but I don’t want to over do it.
    What would be a good brushless motor? Would a 4000kv be ok I want to fit the hardened chassis and as many metal parts to ensure the power doesn’t effect the car what parts would you suggest? Can you buy metal diffs for this model and I’d so what’s the part number? What parts would you recommend? I did a while back spend a lot on a carbon chassis for it but I’m not sure it’s worth using.
    Also what wheel and tyres would be good for high power and what size would be needed I want the buggy to last as long as possible and it’s my first self build kit so I’d need tools that are appropriate for the build.
    Any help would be great.
    I’m doing this because I’m fed up of trying to get parts and they are hard to find.
    Also do you know a painter? If I had the money I’d buy the BR version but that seems so expensive £200 is my limit for the kit tbh the br is like £350 without a shell

      Hi again! Well, I don't think you need to spend much money on a TT02 for speed running. I just did the @poorboysrc TT02 speed challenge with a pretty stock car, see here:
      th-cam.com/video/bNUHgLcF4-E/w-d-xo.html
      My car had a 10 turn brushed motor and a cheap Tamiya Hobbywing ESC. Stock diffs and plastic driveshafts, just a bigger pinion and it hit well over 40mph with the Tamiya rally block tyres that came with the TT02. Some guys in the brushless class got over 100mph with stock diffs, chassis and driveshafts!
      I paint all my cars myself, it's pretty east to be fair.
      It really depends on how fast you want to go? A 4000kv brushless should get you well over 40mph with the right pinion and a standard TT02! 😎👍

      I just installed some ball bearings. The previous owner must have been a total idiot: no grease what so ever. Not on the gears and not inside the diffs. The O-rings on drive trains were missing and on the back axle the inner set of bearings at the wheel were missing. All still in the box though. The 17-T pinion was installed in the 16T position. Luckily easy to fix and nearly no wear on the gears, only a little on the back axle….

    I bought a new tamiya shell for a conversion I’ve done on a road car version ,they don’t come with masks and the spoiler is as thin as the kamtec one. so the kamtec shell is better value for money, cheaper and with the masks.that paint is the same as the core Rc paint I used the metallic purple ,it’s taken a full tin to cover the shell and wing, well sort of covered it, then when I put the white backing on after about three hours ,it soaked through the purple on one side so it’s a sort of purple white colour .seems some of these cheaper paints don’t play well with each other even though they’re the same make ……anyway that looks a fop job fella ❤❤❤❤
