A very enjoyable live Brahms 1 performance. This composition remains a highlight of the orchestral canon because it is one of the greatest symphonies ever written. Thanks for sharing.
And thank you Lee for sharing your thoughts with us!
Our pleasure, as always! It sure is one of our all time favourites!
Einfach wunderbar!
Danke sehr!
Great editing and camera work. Wonderful playing and conducting.
Thank you - much appreciated!
The timpanist deserves a standing ovation!
So true!! May we introduce you to our wonderful and one and only Stephan Cürlis!
One reason I like this symphony is that the different themes are so nicely fitted to each other that the whole seems like a complete unit. At the same time each theme is wonderful in its own way. Thank you Alan Gilbert and NDR Elbphilharmonie for exellent playing!
The theme starting at 32:36 is really something...
You are very welcome! Thank you for listening!
Brahms I love you ❤
Me too
This is one of my favorite pieces of music for all time. One can always find something to quibble about, in my case the lack of the repeat in the first set, but otherwise this performance stacks up quite well with many others I've heard here on this medium and on records, including partly even Sir Roger Norrington. Another subject: another listener commented here about the relatively casual dress of the director. I beg to differ. In fact, I'd welcome a loosening up of the "dress code" for the entire orchestra! One tires of seeing tuxedos everywhere onstage. Not necessarily informal, but normal suits for the men would do fine; the women are freer in their choices of styles, why not everybody? In a word: again a pleasure! JAT
The pleasure is ours, thank you so much! Much appreciated.
I agree about the dresses, women are free to dress as they want, men are locked up in their tuxedos! There we have a subject for manly emancipation!
Thanks for a stylish performance from a grateful Torontonian
Our pleasure! Greetings to Toronto!!
For me the measure of a good orchestral performance is a rich and warm string tone, and one that does not overwhelm the woodwinds. All those boxes are checked here.
Happy to hear that!
I think it is the best interpretation of this first symphony by Brahms from all the posts on TH-cam with the most famous philharmonics in the world. Congratulations NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester minus min 12'10'' sec Timpani(measure-454,a little rushed or hurried the last two eighths) .
Thank you very much, what a compliment! 🤩🤩🤩
Thanks for your opinion. For me, this concert didn't move me at all, as if played just very academically. Admittedly, formally everything seems fine (tempi, phrasing, no mannerisms, etc). So I assume it depends on the listener's mood of the day? 🤔 Your comment makes me plan to re-listen and re-assess at a later date 🙂
A wonderful interpretation of this masterpiece!
Thank you so much!!
And that is your opinion.
Quite a modest size orchestra for Brahms's most epic symphony. But nice performance all the same..
Though sometimes played by larger ensembles, the instrumentation in this performance is correct as scored by Brahms for this composition. Two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani and strings.
"Quite a modest size orchestra" Do you have an eyesight problem? 16 1st violins, 14 2nd violins, 10 violas, 10 cellos and 8 double basses. What 'modest' size are you talking about?
There are far too many women in this orchestra
💯❤
