  • The .45 ACP is often considered to be the best of the common semi-automatic handgun calibers when it comes to stopping power. In this week's video, we look at how the .45 ACP cartridge came to be, look at a few firearms chambered in the cartridge to see how it has changed over the years, and consider its place among modern calibers. Watch this week's video to learn more about the history of the .45 ACP.
    Thanks for watching. New videos post every Thursday!

    I do like .45 acp, its slow and massive, like me. It's more expensive too. But in a race, I always root for the shorter, fatter guys.

    Years ago I was stationed at an army base and was going through a library of old Army manuals. They had a small manual on the .45 1911 and the writer stated that the .45 ACP had such power that if you were hit in the hand it would most likely throw you to the ground. That kind of BS about the .45 has infected both military and civilian personnel for many years. Thank you for this history and setting things straight.

      I too have heard similar tall tales that the .45 acp was the next thing to a freight train in stopping power and also agree that this exaggeration has been instrumental in the myth that it is a far superior round. It is an effective round for sure but shot placement is what will carry the day. Thanks for your comments and I hope you continue to support our channel.

    Good Video, - IMO .45 is one of the few calibers I personally feel comfortable carrying with hardball ammo, 230gr round ball has been a proven man stopper since the Military adopted it, it's also the most reliable for feeding, and tends not to over penetrate your target. As for others I'd say if yours feeds Hollow Points reliably, I'd use that for more effective results, of course I'm sure the 9mm crowd will chime in with the usual Modern 9mm is as good as 105mm howitzer BS. I don't know who said it, but I like the quote "even a near miss with a .45 leaves almost a half inch hole " - All that said, I usually prefer a .40 cal for CCW, kind of the best of both and proven in it's own right.

      Yeah I agree, no special ammo needed. Its not gonna go through 3 rooms and walls after hitting a target.

      I have always thought of the .45 ACP as a “pre-expanded 9mm.” While I like the cartridge the .40 is a better choice for CCW in my opinion.

      The 45auto FMJ does over penetrate. One time I tested my friend's Glock21 230 grain FMJ on a wild boar carcass & most of the bullets passed through my Glock22 40s&w 180 grain FMJ same results while my Glock19 with 115 grain FMJ deflected off bones more often.

      @@PerceptionVsReality333 YMMV - As the old saying goes, somewhere out there is a Vet that'll tell you the enemy soldier needed a second dose of .50 Cal to put him down.
      Yours is a sample of one, that's why my OP said 'Tends Not to' - ALL Bullets do crazy things when they hit targets, whether it be Human, Animal, Car Windshield, Brick Wall etc...Essentially, no 2 struck targets are exactly the same, I seem to remember reading of a guy shot 7 times in the head with a .45 and lived to tell about it, I think that story was in Guinness, so believe at your own risk, most often times it's considered to be a one shot stopper because most times, it is. But I'll still stick to my .40 - Bottom line is, Whether you carry a .22 short or 155 Howitzer, when trouble strikes, make sure you incapacitate your threat before calling it a day.

    The 45 auto might be slow, it might be big but it always gets the job done, and done well. Sure, there are better ballistics in newer cartridges and higher capacity in newer pistols, but the 45 auto is time tested in many military conflicts and two world wars. It has plenty of stopping power for anything walking upright. The 45 auto is easy to reload and the reloading components are easily found. I choose the 45 auto for home defense primarily. I like the 9mm parabellum, I like the.40 s&w and I will be getting a 10mm at some point. Thanks for sharing.

    Thank you for your videos...I really enjoy your demeanor and style...no super judgements just honest observations...please, continue the videos.
    Thank you for the honest analyses of the .45 ACP. AT THE TIME the bullet was invented, it was a superior cartridge, however, as you so well indicated, in modern time, that has changed. I do, however, carry the 45 ACP in a higher capacity handgun...it is a great close quarter fighting cartridge.
    I have watched your video on the 40 S&W cartridge and fully agreed with those assessments, as well. I like the 40 cartridge and carry those handguns fitted with the 40 quite often. I carried the 40 for half my career as an LEO and since retiring 13 years ago.

    Part of the comparison comes from military experience and the restrictions our troops face in ammunition options. As we are restricted to ball ammo, 45 ball tends to make a bigger hole than 9mm ball, therefore a more rapid drop in blood pressure and quicker death. A 9mm hollow point can certainly outperform a 45 ball or maybe a 45 hollow point, depending on bullet design and velocity. Speed is required for expansion. So for me, in ball ammo only, 7 + 1 in 45 = 8 kills. 17 + 1 in 9mm = 6 kills based on the 2 to the chest 1 to the head doctrine. Even just 1 to the chest and 1 to the head will be 9 kills. so not much difference there. i think i would prefer to shoot only 8 times.

    I agree with much of what you said, particularly the historical information. However I think you are forgetting one very important point. Confidence. It may be subjective, but I have confidence in this cartridge and pistol combination that I never developed in so many others I tried over the years.

  • @ParkerUAS
    @ParkerUAS ปีที่แล้ว

    Since I bought my first gun twenty years ago the . 45 ACP has been my preferred EDC. I just find it the one that is the most comfortable and the one I shoot the best. I have had XD's and various 1911's and love the round. All of the other rounds I have tried in semi auto (save one) have been perfectly fine, just not my personal favorite. I wouldn't want to be shot by any of them.
    Oh, the one round that might convert me? The 10mm. The XDM Elite 10mm that a buddy let me shoot at the range proved to be a tack driver and if ammo prices weren't what they are and I wasn't already a few thousand rounds deep in . 45, I'd probably switch my EDC. For now, I'll whittle down the . 45 stock a bit and when it gets time to bulk up some more on ammo, I'll take a look at the prices.

    @OldManMontgomery ปีที่แล้ว

    Around the seven minute mark, the narrator says the 'limited' (eight rounds is limited?) ammunition capacity is a limitation of the Government Model. Yes, it is a limiting factor under three conditions.
    One: Competing in current handgun games requiring thirty round bursts.
    Two: Single handedly engaging a platoon (or larger) sized belligerent force. Hell's Angels would count in a chapter size group.
    Three: Missing a lot.
    Power.
    Kinetic energy, much in the advertising of current ammunition companies and therefore very important to modern thinkers, is dependent on speed. Momentum, ignored by advertisers and therefore largely ignored by many modern gun writers and such, is dependent on mass.
    Oddly enough, high velocity arms typically get high velocity by shooting lighter bullets (projectiles). However, lighter bullets have less mass, and therefore loose velocity quicker than heavier bullets. So light bullet cartridges loose kinetic energy quicker than heavier bullets by the square of of the velocity. The heavier bullets retain momentum better, being calculated proportionally to the actual velocity.
    Then comes the rather flimsy argument the .45 ACP is out powered by the 10mm and .40 S&W cartridges. It is if one is overly impressed by kinetic energy and rather serious recoil.
    The 10mm cartridge is rather overpowered for serious self defense work in two ways. It fires a projectile very likely to penetrate most common objects in a city. Especially villainous attackers. So the shooter is liable for more criminal negligence penalties and negligent injury lawsuits. Not to mention wrongful death law suits. Secondly, in most any carry type weapon, the recoil is rather offensive.
    The .40 S&W is essentially a 10mm with the case shortened and the power seriously reduced. It is, in my not quite humble opinion seeing how I carried one for several years as a federal lawman, quite useful for self defense. However, the recoil is snappier than the Government Model or the Commander (lightweight) I currently carry and the stopping power is not that much greater. And the recoil is 'snappier' (it happens quicker) and more difficult to control than a light Commander as well.
    One notes as well the Heckler and Koch USP and USP(c) are the only two pistols that are of the same user friendly nature as the Government Model configuration.
    I already have a pistol that does the job of self defense. (By the way, one does not fight either wars or battles with a handgun. One uses a rifle as a combatant. Maybe a cannon.) Why buy another arm that needs learning and ammunition?

    Many things to consider about the .45acp that made it stand the test of time. Over penetration for a ccw can be very bad and that makes the .357 mag the worst choice for a possible through target down range through a wall or 2 and refrigerator fatality. Though the .500S&W mag does more cavity damage the .44 and .357 both out penetrate it. Now from the one extreme to the other. A .25 or .32 are probably a bit under powered in several ways. (For the record 1 well placed shot with a good distance and good back stop ends the fray cleanly with any caliber.) Also hollow points from the more common ccw can clog and not expand from coats or belts. Because of all the things listed and other variables the 10mm will give more cavity damage than the .45, and the .45 more that the .40 and so on. That is where the "fat and slow" seems to fit in. It hits like a truck without going through a truck to hit someone else. The final things are that there are 100s of videos of multiple police mag dumping 9mm into suspects that are high or deranged and they are still able to inflict damage. There are not very many of those types of videos or accounts of officers or ccw individuals out of the other 3 rounds. 40 S&W, .45acp or 10mm. The most important thing of anything is never to be in a position to have to draw a weapon and use it. The second is. What fits your surroundings and what are you most comfortable with?

I shoot Magtech 250 grain lead flat nose bullets with an advertised velocity of 761 fps (although that was out of a 4” test barrel and my gun is a full length rifle). So how do you think .45 colt (specifically cowboy action loads) measure up to a 45 acp especially in home defense scenarios?

    I'm a new subscriber that's watched a few of your caliber videos, 9mm, 357 sig, 357 mag, 380acp and now 45acp. I think you're doing a great job trying to be as accurate as possible, but it's very annoying to hear you constantly refer to ammunition or a round of ammo as a "bullet" If you really want to be as accurate as possible you probably should stop doing that. Ammo contains 4 different components. The bullet is only one of them. Yes, the bullet is at the front similar to a car having a bumper up front, but you certainly don't refer to your car as a bumper anymore than you should refer to ammo as a bullet because your car contains more components than just the bumper. I blame Hollywood movies for creating this problem. When some actor runs out of ammo in a movie they'll say, "I need more bullets!"

    The .45 is much more shootable than the .40 - and certainly more shootable than the 10mm. It is, for me, the sweet spot between power and control. And the modern fascination with capacity is lost on me. I EDC an Ed Brown Kobra Carry .45 with Federal 230gr HSTs. And i feel supremely confident in my choice.

    That all makes really good sense in the context provided. However, bullet technology also cannot be ignored. A round of Federal HST expands to close to an inch in diameter, reliably. In self defense ranges that is a lot of damage, right now. Also, A lot of people are incredibly accurate with a 1911. The first time I ever even TOUCHED one, I was able to put 7 out of 8 rounds on 6 inch steel targets at 25 yards. The gun made me look real good.

    Guess you never read the Thompson LaGuard study. The bodies never moved when shot. A 9mm got the only one shot kill on a beef. JMB first 45acp firearms was a 1909 then came the 1910 then the 1911. The original load JMB developed used a 200grain bullet a little over 900fps. The Thompson study recommended a firearm with a 3 inch bore not a 45. The Colt 45 revolvers issued the give more power than the 38 colts did not stop the Philippine trib members any better. The powers that be picked the 45. They were the calvary officers that started using SAA revolvers. The army revolver load was the 45S&W. A 230 grain bullet a little over 800fps. Just what the selected 45 Acp load is. Try again for a better video.

  • @argonzeit
    @argonzeit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that one of the biggest reasons the 45 ACP is still around is because it's a big heavy slow bullet. It makes it nearly perfect as a suppressor host.
    There are manufacturers out there that do make an 'updated' round. There's 45 super, though you might have to modify your gun. Then there's 450 SMC, which uses a stronger case so all you need is a +p rated gun. The 450 SMC brings those big heavy bullets up to 10mm speeds, they even have those that are slinging those 185 grain bullet at around 900ft pounds or so of force.
    I will say, 45 shoots real smooth for me out of my P320. The only time I feel like I don't like it is when I go to buy more ammo.
