      @@DAMIENDMILLS It sounds stupid at first glance, but I can at least understand why a sailor wouldn't know how to swim. They're gonna be spending most of their time on the boat, and they'll probably die in open water anyway.

      They'd teach them floatation positions. It is true at this point the average sailor wouldn't know how to swim (unless you can swim at >20 knots it just means you're choosing which part of the ocean you die in), but that just means they wouldn't comment on that fact.

    It's actually a lot worse if you know the history: for example, Ben would have been court-martialled as a deserter when he returned since the Eagle Squadrons didn't exist until after the bombing (they'd have violated the US' on-paper neutrality in the war), or that Ben and Josh are actually copy-pasted over two real-life pilots with even more incredible stories, George S. Welch and Kenneth M. Taylor.
    And the sailors being unable to swim thing was in part true (unless you can swim faster than the ship you fell off it kind of doesn't matter), but they had floatation devices, they were taught flotation positions, and it was so common one sailor simply wouldn't say it to another like that. If nothing else because he'd know the answer would be "Well what do you want me to do about it?"

    I remember watching Pearl Harbor in my younger years and loving it. Now....not as much. Definitely a flawed film with some historical inaccuracies (and less than stellar dialogue), but I still find it an enjoyable movie. The critic losing his mind over the "I can't swim!" bit ended with egg on his face, as it turned out that swimming wasn't a requirement in the Navy until after WWII. That moment began my move away from watching his reviews.

    • @austenbeaver1010
      @austenbeaver1010 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      EquesTron Does that really make the entire rant invalid?

    • @EquesTron
      @EquesTron 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's not entirely invalid. Bay (and screenwriter Randal Wallace) played too loose with historical accuracy, and it hurt the biggest scene in the movie. While there are moments that are true, there's an equal amount of moments that aren't, like the Japanese firing on Hospitals, which is straight up fabricated to bring drama for the Nurse subplot. While I wouldn't go as far as calling Bay a "fucking dick," because let's be honest, who expected the guy who had oil drillers stop an asteroid to adhere to 100% accuracy, I would rightly criticize the decision to make things up for the sake of drama in a real event.
      I also understand where NC is coming from with his anger. His father served in the Navy, and hearing a Navy man screaming that he couldn't swim was seen as an insult.
      The problem I had was the trigger that caused him to go on his tirade about Bay's and Wallace's inaccuracy was something that wasn't actually inaccurate. That's what made me cringe the most about it. The first time I watched the review, when it got to that point, everything that came out his mouth was drowned out by my thought of "But that part was true."

    • @danielwilson8604
      @danielwilson8604 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Firing at a hospital is a war crime, and one considered especially heinous. Showing japan commiting such an act, when they've historically never done that, then following it up with a glory shot of an american flag is not even subtle historical demonisation.
      that said, i respect your point and ackowldege your problems for it. and thanks for taking the time to be fair about it.

    • @thebeavpercabethftw9604
      @thebeavpercabethftw9604 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To be fair EquesTron, he was probably going off of his father's requirements to get in the Navy and didn't think to check. Think about this for a second. If you had no idea about the requirements to get into the Navy back then and someone told you knowing how to swim was not one of them, would you think that makes sense? Why would you put people who can't swim in a branch of the military where you are required to be on ships for long periods of time? That's asinine.

    • @EquesTron
      @EquesTron 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is a fair point. That's why I understood where his anger and frustration was coming from. It was too crazy and stupid to be true, but in a very rare twist, it was.

    Nostalgia critic obviously knows nothing about how combat aircraft works 😂😂 clearly never worked on new or old aircraft in his life 😂 just a TH-camr who likes to think that he can point out all the inaccuracies from everything. Has he ever served a day in the airforce? Is he part of or ever been a part of an old aircraft restoration team? I think the answer there is obvious. He clearly knows nothing about combat aircraft at all, the only thing he has to go off is other movies he’s seen and like most you tubers probably got his info off of video games.... and we all know that games are ‘gospel’ to some people. In regards to the crop duster at the start of the movie, the ‘on/off ‘ switch is literally in the exact same place as shown in the movie. His reaction is based on his own feelings and where he’s right in some inaccuracies in the movie ( everybody knows that Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor wasn’t exactly accurate ) but there was a lot of things that actually did happen historically. For example Rafe and Danny in the movie during the Pearl Harbor attack did get 2 P40 fighter planes in the air. This was a direct tribute to the 2 army Air Force pilots who did manage to get 2 P40 fighters off the ground and actively engage the Japanese forces. Just one example of many! Nostalgia critic I believe needs to do some honest historical research and then come to his own conclusion on the events of Pearl Harbor, rather than what he’s done here and focus on the inaccuracies. I don’t understand why people cannot get they’re head around that Movies of course are dramatised which ‘justify’ certain inaccuracies with movies. Personally I think he’s just spent however long babbling about his personal feelings rather than focusing on what actually happened and explaining the inaccuracies in a serious manner. Regardless of said inaccuracies, this movie was made to honour the history and events that led to the attack of Pearl Harbor and its aftermath. Personally I find ( not yours) nostalgia critics response to the movie a bit disrespectful and sarcastic and in turn disrespectful and sarcastic to the people who were lost in that terrible attack. At the end of the day it’s storytelling. Who TF cares if there’s a few inaccuracies in a MOVIE!!
