if you have an old laptop that you will not use anymore you can take out the screen, use the code written on it's back to find the controller board and build a stand for it
I once had a Viewsonic monitor where the backlight would flicker and randomly turn off. That turned out to be faulty capacitors in the integrated power supply, which luckily is a lot easier to fix than the other parts of a monitor, because you generally don't have surface components in the high voltage parts - you just have to be careful to not short anything in that section. But with the actual panels, as long as you can get a replacement, you just have to be careful to swap it without bending it, cracking the edges of the glass, or damaging the tiny connectors
In my experience, the most common part to fail on a monitor is the power supply. That has proven to be significantly harder to repair/replace than a panel. I'd be very interested to see LTT give it a shot so I can learn. I'm about half way through replacing one of the field effect transistors on the monitor PSU, and my fingers are crossed...
why monitor monitors motherboards covers have to be from aluminium, to be so heavy, i dont understand, ther isnt any good spec light portable high build quality monitor... nly cheaps are light with bad specs
While panel replacement is always worth looking into, it's a good idea to be cautious about picking a panel. You run the risk of having a worse backlight (in the case of panels with integrated backlights), noticeable amounts of dead pixels, worse contrast, and all sorts of other things that the original screen went through a QA process over. When you go to the bottom of the barrel, it's always a toss-up. You might get lucky and get the exact same experience, you might have a mediocre monitor at the end of it that just works, and you might wind up with another dead screen. Could've been surplus output from the same factory, could've been a clone from another factory, or it could be a genuine part that didn't pass QA. To be clear, I always at least try, but there've been cases where I had to go through two or three screens before a laptop finally looked happy again.
After they had the monitor put together and they set it where they did on the table, I spent the rest of the video waiting for one of them to knock it off. Good start to another monitor repair video.
I got this monitor for $300 on eBay without too much trouble and it is fully functional with no dead pixels so maybe in some cases look for deals on eBay before doing something like this
I wouldn't go out of my way to check for dead pixels on a monitor that I couldn't warranty return. Just enjoy your blissful ignorance for as long as you can.
Linus and team please make side note about what parts you wouldn't want damaged. Like the boards in the back. Looking to upgrade my monitor and thought I could give this a shot to save some cash.
You guys should do a DIY monitor, find some cheap no-name driver board that can connect to a panel, get a power supply, then make a housing and stand in that new shop, or 3D print a case or something

Okay, thanks to Linus and His team. I have now found myself a way to find myself a high end monitor. Which I have no need for at this time. But, hey that's what projects are for. (:

@@OKANGUVEN99 monitors are NOT hard to break. You can accidentally move it the wrong way and it will break. Dont get me wrong, I'm all for buying used, but do NOT suggest it as a sure-fire way of getting something that works, because it may very well not.

@@digitalk68 well him saying either 100% or 0% is absolutely disingenuous, because that's not true with possibility vs probability either, now is it? FPC cables are standard parts, if you mess it up you count the pins, look whether it's same-side or inverted, measure pitch and look up available lengths. It's likely enough that you may end up with a longer one if you have to order it new and but it's no problem. What is that it takes time, because nobody local stocks them ever, you have to order them from a specialist supplier.
I love the dynamic sometimes.. Linus is literally like the dad of LTT. Always making I paid for it jokes and generally handling people like they are kids xD it's great
Fried the power supply on a monitor once. Praying the panel was still good, I bought one with a broken panel on ebay, put the 2 together and was good to go for only $25. Yay!
the problem is usually the panel cost almost as close as a new monitor. Once I attempted to fix a broken monitor that costed $270 on Amazon, when I checked for the panel price, it was close to $210. We could argue that the $60 difference make it worth the effort, but personally, i'm not ready to waste my money with a chance to screw up and lose another $210 in the process.
@@vanlao6367 the bigger problem is how unreliable this can be too, here they get a fairly solid panel... but you are never too sure about what you will get by purchasing something like this on backchannels from chinese factories leftovers... Overall that's a lot of money, time and efforts for something that may or may not work. Really it's basically gambling.
@@vanlao6367 If your monitor 'only' costs 200-300 bucks then yeah, it might not be worth it. But if you can get a 600-800 dollar monitor for half the price or less then that might be a different deal. There's of course still a chance that you might get a dud but at that price point it might look more attractive to take the risk at least once. Honestly though i doubt this is gonna become a thing unless forced through legislation or something. If companies like Acer or Asus start noticing that customers are buying backchannel spare parts from China to fix their products then they're probably gonna start trying to clamp down on it real quick. Apple's already trying it's best to limit people's abillity for self-repair or 3rd-party repair by shutting down parts suppliers or siezing parts in customs.
It's not a Linus Tech Tips video until Linus breaks his toys... Wait? He bought it broken? Deliberately shelled out cash for a broken monitor? Well, okay then.
Yeah, how about no. I'd rather stay safe and buy brand new or get a deal on ebay at an auction. I don't really feel like it's worth saving 100USD on a display and risk a lot of stuff.
well it can be more, if all goes right it can be 300+USD but i can see where you are coming from, i'll probably get my first good monitor as a new one too, but i like tinkering and will probably look into this after that
I mean you can buy a good condition used Aorus monitor on Amazon for around $480 after taxes (USD), so their costs here of ~$420 is not worth it at all imo. If I could save like $150-200 off that used price then I'd be pretty interested, though...might still look into it more. I like tinkering, but I very strongly don't want to deal with the possibility of having wasted money on a broken monitor that can't be fixed with a simple panel swap.
$180 saved compared to buying a brand new for $600, that's not unheard of to find a brand new monitor that's 30% off, no gambling involved, no breaking a monitor apart and reassemble it again yourself, and you still have the warranty. Like the last monitor I purchased was a $400 1440p 144hz and was on sale for 26% cheaper.

Yo, def make a vid on the making your own monitor. Will watch 100%.
It's super easy. But panel, buy PCB connect together. Done.
if you have an old laptop that you will not use anymore you can take out the screen, use the code written on it's back to find the controller board and build a stand for it
@@michelterres Ye, you can also make diy transparent screen using one
they have
That was almost English.
These guys using an iron would be terrifying...
why monitor monitors motherboards covers have to be from aluminium, to be so heavy, i dont understand, ther isnt any good spec light portable high build quality monitor... nly cheaps are light with bad specs
Good start to another monitor repair video.

someone sold a broken monitor for 100 dollars and even more crazy, you bought it ?
I have made a pretty good living off buying broken stuff, fixing it and reselling it. @@digitalk68 well him saying either 100% or 0% is absolutely disingenuous, because that's not true with possibility vs probability either, now is it? You'd have to know the percentage of panels that are just bad from factory, and that would be your percentage for success, say 1/50 panels are automatically bad, that means you'd have a success rate of 98% which is not 100% nor 0%. Repairs the expensive monitor, puts it literally on the edge of the desk in a way it could fall with the slightest tap... I'm getting déjà vu
You can even build a full function monitor on taobao( aliexpress)
You just need one drive board and a good panel and a case (
I love the dynamic sometimes.. Linus is literally like the dad of LTT. Always making I paid for it jokes and generally handling people like they are kids xD it's great
Fried the power supply on a monitor once. Praying the panel was still good, I bought one with a broken panel on ebay, put the 2 together and was good to go for only $25. Yay!
This has the potential to prevent a lot of e-waste. I hope Free Geek sees this.
the problem is usually the panel cost almost as close as a new monitor.
@@Fraggr92 Now to be fair, Apple has been cockbags ever since Jobs returned, its nothing new.
It's not a Linus Tech Tips video until Linus breaks his toys... Wait? He bought it broken? Deliberately shelled out cash for a broken monitor? Well, okay then.
Lets talk about that monitor!
ITS SOOO CLEAN 😍😍
Yeah, how about no. I'd rather stay safe and buy brand new or get a deal on ebay at an auction. I don't really feel like it's worth saving 100USD on a display and risk a lot of stuff.
Yep quite agree but on the other hand if you have a faulty quality monitor it might be worth the risk of fixing it rather than making land fill.
well it can be more, if all goes right it can be 300+USD but i can see where you are coming from, i'll probably get my first good monitor as a new one too, but i like tinkering and will probably look into this after that
I mean you can buy a good condition used Aorus monitor on Amazon for around $480 after taxes (USD), so their costs here of ~$420 is not worth it at all imo. If I could save like $150-200 off that used price then I'd be pretty interested, though...might still look into it more. I like tinkering, but I very strongly don't want to deal with the possibility of having wasted money on a broken monitor that can't be fixed with a simple panel swap.
I got the the same Monitor, and in Canada it actually costs $799 new
@dan me I know that... I'm simply stating that it costs $799 cad dollars, while in the video they are referring to the usd price of $599
You can buy LCD panel driver boards on eBay for fairly cheap. It takes 12 volts in and HDMI and has flex cable outputs for different displays.
