    Protip: You might be able to shine a light on the monitor and see the outline of whatever it's supposed to display (works best with text) even if the backlight is broken. If _that_ shows weird shapes, it might not only be the backlight that's broken 😳

    • @acumenium8157
      @acumenium8157 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Neither part of this is a guarantee for all LCD screens. Sometimes a screen will refuse to display anything if the backlight doesn't work. The Nintendo Switch is like this. Sometimes the display itself breaking will interfere with the backlight---I believe this is also on the Switch, where if any part of the display stops working, the backlight does too.
      Some laptops will also be similar.
      You did give good advice, but LCDs are really annoying as there is absolutely no standard amongst them on how they work or how they fail.

      I mean, I "fixed" a Wii with a dead disk drive by just installing the Homebrew mod, so games can run from SD or USB drive.
      Depending on what you need to fix you might not even need a soldering iron.
      In the same way installing a SSD in an old laptop or desktop can give it a lot of new life, even moreso with a lightweight version of Linux installed instead of Windows, and Linux is quite easy to use in many ways now and will regularly run magnitudes faster than Windows on the same hardware.
      So yeah, start with "fixes" that you can understand and manage and scale up where you can!

    • @Tibyon
      @Tibyon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've "repaired" two monitors by replacing the power boards entirely. Usually they cost around 30 USD. It's more wasteful and not as cool, but I have two 1080p lcd monitors that cost me 60 dollars in total. I just don't have the soldering and diagnostics skills for a more advanced repair.

    3:40 - I had repaired an acer monitor one time and the board was clicked in the same way as this board. This actually is because this prevents the board from popping out of the metal case. At that time the power supply port was ditched in and the board got stuck because the tape on the metal case was not tight enough. After 2 hours I got it to work again!

    Electrolytic Capacitors have a Polarity the stripe side mostly with a dash - is negative also the side also with the shorter lead. The board usually has the polarity stenciled on the board. This one has a dash - negative. On higher voltage boards if you have the wrong polarity they will blow with a hiss and release a smelly smoke. Just to help out and it may have already been mentioned in the comments.

    Whilst capacitors in that era suffered badly, the light source of the time was often a cold cathode tube (It is in this monitor model), which would degrade over time. They have a small amount of mercury which is vapourised, and conducts electricty. After much use, some of the mercury binds to the glass and less is available to vapourise. This in turn pushes the power board harder, and puts it under more stress with also reduced light output. Eventually the power board will cut out, as the power required is undeliverable, or it would fail. Replacing the cold cathode tube(s) at the same time is also a good idea, which also increases brightness, plus the capacitors, whilst are better nowadays, are still under stress. I've done this before, however they do contain mercury, and are highly fragile. I've not done this for many years as modern screens are mercury free, but hope this explains what's going on too.

    Ah yes, I have the exact same monitor. My backlight died years ago as well and after replacing all caps, even the AC filter cap, it worked again. Mine didn’t look that worse as these, except for the AC cap that even leaked, but they were all bad. I used it from there on again until recently when I upgraded to bigger screens at last, using this one for my G3 PowerMac now.
    It’s funny seeing this exact model with a dead backlight in need of a cap replace. This is a good video, it should help a lot of people figuring out what’s going on. Good one!

    One of the first things I learned to fix during my apprenticeship to become a technician was this exact problem! We got a sh!tton of "dead" monitors that only needed a new capactitor or 5! They all worked just fine again within 15 - 20 minutes, tho we always had them running as temporary additional monitors for an hour or 2 to make sure there weren't any other wonky caps that would only fail after heating up and then work just fine again after letting them cool down a bit.
    OOOOH, and believe me when I say I fuckin' *_FEEL_* that pain of having to pry the damn things apart using a flat head screwdriver like I was doing it myself at this very moment!
    Oh yeah, and I also zapped myself multiple times on still charged 400 Volt caps over the years while lifting off the power box coz my patience had run out after prying the damn plastic case open and removing all the tape and wires.
    And one final tip from an experienced solderer: Use a de-soldering pump to remove most of the solder, it's usually enough to open up the holes and only needs to be emptied and cleaned once in a while. I only use de-soldering braid when I'm working on stuff where I can't use the pump properly or run the risk of damaging stuff with it.

    I fixed my free tv like this. It was p good as far as tvs went. Capacitor plague is common among the olevia 242 t11

    I had a monitor that worked, but it kept rebooting like it had been unplugged: initial logo screen and everything (not just standby). I threw it away, but now I’m thinking I might try a repair next time. :-) thanks for the encouragement!

    My sister has this exact monitor in her room. It's been serving us for about a decade, and it works well, even thought it had a lowish resolution of 1440x900.

    Hey MattKC! I absolutely love your videos, and I had just one question about them that I've been stuck on for a while now. What's the name of that song that you always use in the background?

    For all of you... just careful when servicing the psu board. These boards have bigger caps still holding charge and there is risk of shock. Avoid touching these bigger caps.
    Those marked 25v 16v 10v 6.3v are safe to handle. Either use the technique shown or use a proper tool to unsoldering.
    If there is a spot to install one more capacitor in parallel with the replaced cap, do it. The caps will work together to smooth the current and it will ensure the caps will last more years.
    Pay attention to polarity, voltage, capacity, temperature (use 105c instead of 85c), etc
    The caps life depends greatly of the inner and outer temperature. If the temperature inside of the device is great, the capacitor's temp will be high as well and will degrade life over time with spectacy around 2500 hours at 85c/105c inner. Reducing brightness or using the device where the air can more around the device will be ok.

      One additional tip: If the capacitors voltage is higher than the original, you're safe to use it in place. If it's lower, don't put it in.

      Yes. If there wasa 1000uf 16v, we can install a 1000uf 25v. I also like to put 1500uf and above.

    I have a similar problem with a tv that has it's screen turn on sometimes, sometimes not, will have to give the capacitors a check
