The relationship (if you can call it that, which I believe you can) between Fran and Maxwell's first wife is so sweet. She loves those kids like her own, but is never so jealous as to want them to forget their mother who passed. Maxwell will ALWAYS love her, and he loves Fran too. She gives the two her blessing from the afterlife because Fran is a great person who will make her family happy.

Maxes first wife, Sarah. Absolutely demo started HER sense of humor in selecting FRAN, of ALL the world, to bring Joy to her children and her childhood love. 🎉🎉🎉I like to think Sarah had a delicious sense of the absurd, constantly ROARING with laughter as she watched her selection of The Nanny become her children's beloved guidebooks and comforter. What greater gift could a mother provide under the circumstances?❤❤❤🎉

In Germany "The Nanny" is FAR more popular than "Seinfeld" or "Fresh Prince of Bel Air". Many Germans don't even know "Seinfeld" but we all know and love "The Nanny".

I always found Seinfeld average at best. With maybe 3 minutes or so of absolute rofl moments per episode.
Friends has aged worse than ANY sitcom in history. It's borderline unwatchable these days.
Fresh Prince was of it's time. That's totally unwatchable these days.
The Nanny is just chock full of likeable characters. Which is in my opinion what keeps it fresh.

I always thought Niles and CC actually did make sense to me romantically because most of the time, it felt like the remarks and jokes was friendly most of the time, i mean, they both had moments where it stepped over the line, and with the wealth and class differences, i see how it would have been downplayed into insulting, but i don’t know, i always thought it worked better than most.

This is one of few sitcoms where I feel that every single element worked. The cast were all spotless, the writing was excellent, the humor and acting of such humor was top-notch. Plus it's one of few shows that got the will-they-won't-they trope right, because both relationships had an actual payoff. The supporting cast were all great too, especially Sylvia and Yetta. I'm Russian, so I had My Wonderful Nanny (Моя прекрасная няня) when I was very little, and I remember loving it so much, I still remember every word of the opening theme (which was also animated like the original), I remember the wedding episode very vividly and how happy I was.
Russian nanny Vika was actually made to be Ukrainian, from Mariupol, and she moved to Moscow at 15. It makes my heart break how much everything has changed since 2004 when the 1st season came out.
To keep the butler's British sense of humor the writers made it so our Niles, named Konstantin, used to work in the British Embassy.
We had many celebrity cameos as well, even our own 7th season with original scripts. They even showed Vika's father in the flesh.
I've been waiting for so long for you to do this retrospective, thank you so much Jose! I'm always amazed at how much of the original script the writers try to save in the adapted version. For example, I was on the floor when I realized that Russian 'Married with Children' adaptation kept the episode about Al's trans friend almost fully intact, with little to no changes!

I’m glad José decided to review Sony-owned sitcoms. They own a huge library of sitcoms ranging from 1950’s classics like Father Knows Best all the way until the just recently ended The Goldbergs. I especially hope he can review Norman Lear’s catalog!

Know what is a very underrated sitcom? The 80s reboot of leave it to beaver (still the beaver 🦫 and new leave it to beaver); it’s on TH-cam I recently found it (I was born in the late 80s so I was too little to have remembered it) but I recommend it. Wally and the beaver as well as Eddie and Lumpy have their own children. The Haskell sons are played by Ken Osmonds real life sons and their family is so funny and interesting.

Oh dear, these modern views of how jokes are ‚hurting‘ some people. I, as a fat person, love the character of Sylvia, and the jokes are so funny and on point. As a disabled comedian once said on stage : ‚we have the same rights like you and as such, we have the right to be made fun of.‘ When we are no longer made fun of, we take ourselves too serious. Look at the uncomfortably marginalized and dutiful allying young people, they need to be humbled and ridiculed again, because they have been risen to be unbearable.

    • @shadenox8164
      @shadenox8164 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Sounds like another comedian whining about not wanting to write different material to appeal to modern audiences based on that remark about young people.
I want to know when did it become the audience's job to find anything a comedian says funny and not the comedians job to improve their material when it falls flat? It seems like any time a comedian has their material criticised these days they complain about it instead of adapting. You can't just keep using the same formula forever and not expect it to get stale. Millennials overall don't respond to the boomer humor of "I hate my wife" for example.
The funniest thing those types ever say is suggesting young people these days have no sense of humor because all the groups they accuse of it are constantly joking about their own experiences and the state of the world. Hell jokes that would probably offend some of the older generations who are whining because their jokes aren't landing with newer generations. People want a better written joke than "haha fat." these days regardless of whether they think its offensive or not.

@@shadenox8164 first, my fault, I missed out on marking the quote properly. But otherwise no, we all need our snowflake opinions to be challenged. Comedians must not appease us, they must challenge us from all sides, like court jesters had to speak facts to their masters.

Honestly, If I had known myself more when I was watching The Nanny as a kid, I would probably have payed a bit more attention to the message (via Sylvia's weight jokes) that you can love food, and have it also be appreciation for actual good food, and learn moderation so it isn't unhealthy to love food. Something I did not actually pick up on until I was about 30 or so and watching re-runs.

I can't believe you didn't talk more about the Russian version, as it plays into your talk about "How long can you do the will they/won't they".
For those that don't know the Russian version of The Nanny was SO beloved that their Sixth Season opens... to reveal Season 5 was a dream. The Maxwell character never proposed and they did all new original scripts, many of which were actually rejected scripts from The Nanny. Eventually the show DID end like the American on... only for it to get a 7th season that dealt with the death of the Sylvia character (her actress died in real life) and the Fran character's father moving in with the family.
While I've never seen it such a thing is an interesting "What If?" for The Nanny

In the Italian edition they always found a way to justify with the dialogues all the Jewish references. Francesca (that's how she's called in Italian) had Jewish relatives (that's how they explained the Jewish wedding), tried Jewish experiences in her life for fun, but still was italian. In the Kibbutz episode she says that she escaped there with her jewish boyfriend. All the Jewish references in the dialogues were changed with references to italian culture (she is from Frosinone in our version). Also in the italian dub Sylvia (called Assunta in italian) and Yetta are both her aunts, it's implied that her mother is still in Italy. It's weird, but if you ask an Italian is very weird to discover that she is NOT italian in the original version.
"La tata" was very loved in Italy and still is part of our pop culture.

I grew up with The Nanny and I’ve always loved it. Looking back at it now, I think it was this show that made Judaism and Jewish culture feel like just another part of American life. It was normalized. I grew up in a very Christian area so I wasn’t exposed to this in my real life. I hope Fran Drescher knows what a positive impact she’s had on American culture.

I love The Nanny, I've seen it a million times. I highly recommend Hot in Cleveland if you like The Nanny. It does a lot of similar things like being aware its a show and deconstructing sitcom tropes in a fun way. Plus it stars former sitcom actors and they all start out as common sitcom female tropes. There are also a lot of guest stars from other sitcoms. Plus Betty White is apart of the main cast, if that doesnt convince you idk what would.

Truth be told that us probably the way to get a long running show - be a show that can be watched here and there. But I have to say - I have always adored Fran Drescher. She's always nice to see onscreen because she us always the best thing there...
