I read in an interview that Temple grandin hasn't used the hug machine in years and she's finally perfectly fine with hugging people the same as everyone else does. She's a fascinating person

I am a single mom and it's hard raising kids, especially alone. So many times they get mad or upset when you make them do things they don't want to do or don't understand why they're having to do it. It's a very hard job. Throughout the movie you see her mom struggling to make her do things despite the struggles she faced being autistic. That shot of the look on her mom's face - to me was her mother's confirmation that all the hard things she forced her to do were finally being paid off - job well done mom!! Every parents dream!!

I'm a 20 year old adult, and I was diagnosed with Aspergers today, all my life I did not know I had Aspergers, but I knew I was different. And I could relate so much to Temple Grandin. I already have my associate's degree. I was taught manners and was raised in a strict household and that helped me to be a functional adult with a good work ethic...athough I don't have good social skills... manners and social graces work for me.

I cried and cried when I watched this movie. My son was autistic (yes past tense). I was moved by the movie and it made me feel better about my son's condition. Pass forward 4 years later, I got diagnosed. That door in the end is very real for me right now. I lost my son in 2018 and I'm still grieving. My mom tried her best but she neglected me when I got to be an adult so I don't get to be hugged. My confidence is shattered. He died March of 2018 and I changed my career as medical assistant because I wasn't able to save him. I stumbled upon being a substitute teacher at his old school. Coincidentally, the job posting was posted on his birthday. I took it as sign and went for the job. Been at that job going on almost 4 years now. I'm now a junior in college pursuing a major in special education teaching. That door is real for most of us autistic people.
Thanks for the upload. I needed to see this today.

I met Temple at this age. She had put together a cattle handling facility. We were interested in her ideas. We knew she was different and she told us she was; most realized she was gifted to understanding things we could not see, like the way shadows made cattle stop, or how well they moved in a circle. We noticed, but never put it all together; she did. Although I met & spoke with her a dozen times spending hours with us, last yr she could not recall meeting me. Needed a visual cue.

I haven't seen the film yet, but I'm a bit thrown off by the way the actress chose to speak. I read Temple's book 'the autistic brain' and I listened to several of her speeches and she definitely doesn't talk like this. Yes, she had difficulty learning how to speak as a child, but in her speeches she sounds just fine. I think this is a bit overacting - wanting to seem obviously disabled. But the problem is: autistic people very often don't seem disabled at all. This feels like a very neurotypical approach to autism to me (I'm autistic myself and am working on my phd as well and no one would know I'm autistic, other than the people who saw me as a child).

    • @SHEvans
      @SHEvans ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@valhalla1240 Temple herself said Claire Danes "she became me". We have to remember this is not Temple Grandin now, its Temple Grandin back in the 1960's through 1981 in the movie.
If it was not authentic, we all know Temple would have said so (those of us who have heard her speak and read her books).

Claire Danes did what Dustin Hoffman did for Rainman ~ one terrific job on being autistic in different levels. There are 1,019 genetic markers for autism and like Temple said in her books and lectures, different therapy programs and support animals do not work for all people with autism. I gotta love when she said "If there was a cure for autism, I would not want it because I might lose my brilliant brain. God love you Temple. We learnt so much from you and our boys are doing great. :~)

I don't like being touched, but I love to be squeezed by things. I bought myself a weighted blanket, and it can calm me down in seconds. Complete meltdown can be stopped just like that. As a single father to a 12-year-old who is born with autism, I’ve learned this things throughout the years I’ve learned communication I wasn’t brought up and that type of atmosphere as a child. I was brought up for Toughlove so being a father alert to change all that and show love and always embrace a hug. Every day is very important. Schedules are very important as well to make sure we each tell each other we love each other before bedtime. Everything Hass to be on a schedule with autistic children because if they don’t have a schedule, it’s just chaotic so I live to schedule my phone rings at different times for everything that’s how I live my life for my son communication never talk above them go to their level squat to their height, it’s more compatible. That way love is a very incredible key. Most of us grew up probably not knowing that hug means 1 million things we do that every night. I love you and give a hug before bed even without dog we do a group hug it’s part of our way of scoping and it’s worked.
I can never truly wrap my head around how genius my son is I was like how is he passing the spelling test every week how he passes his difficult math test which in my days were different than they do it today and he passes with 100 and I realize after watching this movie numerous times I realize now today which was yesterday May 31, 2023 that he visualize is everything in his head and that’s how he’s able to conquer. He wants to become a police officer and he’s determined And he’s doing well. He just got his 4th honor roll, and four trophies for a high achievements in science, social studies and language arts. My son didn’t speak as a child he has speech he had occupational therapy I had counseling, but eventually he didn’t wanna go to counseling he got tired of talking about the same thing which I understand truthfully but you have to have patience and love.

I first saw this when I was nine years old, I’d been told by my mom and my third grade teacher that I might be autistic (but I wasn’t diagnosed until I was twelve) and I was asked to watch this movie, it had just recently released and was very popular back then. This was the first time I’d really heard of autism or Temple Grandin. I usually never get emotional at movies even now but I was crying at this scene and my mom was shocked and asked me why and I said it was good to see someone who thinks the same way I do. I had literally never even thought there could be anyone who had the same way of thinking or doing or feeling things as me and it was a big shock that I wasn’t the only one.

She was her mother. Temple summorized what her mother had done for her from her childhood on in a minute. So remembering all sufferings in a minute made her cry. Another reason she was proud of her.

I can sort of understand what she means about the rocking and other self-stimulation habits of autistic people. I'm not autistic but I do have some degree of ADHD, even more so when I was a kid. In my free time sometimes I would spin around or walk around with my head back facing the sky because it felt comforting in a way and helped me focus my nervous energy. Adults and other kids thought I was a weirdo but it helped me to calm down when I felt like an energy bomb with nowhere to explode.

I'm the same way! I have Inattentive ADHD (ADD, basically), and whenever I sit or stand, I rock in my chair. I'm okay with hugging, but that's mostly because I'm short enough to hear the persons' heartbeat. I also have oversensitive ears, and can't handle blue and red flashing lights. I have custom made musical earplugs so that terrible sounds are quiet enough to ignore, so I can hear people around me and so that I can handle loud restaurants and the school hallways. I also find music calms me in a way I can't even describe. But, horseback riding gives me the same effect. I remember the first time I left my first horseback riding lesson, I felt so calm! I've never felt anything like it!

You know, I think that we exclude people because of what they are not who they are. We have to learn to treat everybody the same in this world, and it will be much better.

The notion that difficulties seen by Autistics are 'no different' to NT (non autistics) is complete crap. I have Aspergers which is a mild form of Autism, but I still recognise a lot of behaviours in Temples film. I dont like being hugged by anyone I dont fully trust, if Im in meltdown I wont be touched at all. Something like too many people in town can send me over the edge. Ill cry, scream, throw things and bang my head. I dont like to go out socially, its exhausting and participation becomes actually painful. Im massively sensitive to smells and noise, Ive run out of work in a panic before now and screamed the place down more than once. Im hard to figure out, I cant always talk (I mean I am selectively mute), I cant bear my hair being brushed, labels, the dentist, and ill go off on one if my foods mixed. This is NOTHING like a non autistic life. Temple gives a wonderful insight into that.

Hey dont feel down. Bullies are dumb. All they do is attract attention. Make you feel like a loser. And try to be the greatest than everyone else. Just try to ignore them. You dont deserve to be treated with disrespect. I was teased in 3 grade because of the color of my skin. I learned to laugh along then. Now I regret it as i feel useless. But i changed dramatically. God bless you.
