    That bike was my nemesis. I raced a 79 then 80 kx 80 and that Damn CR was hard to get by.

    I had that bike as a kid, as many have stated, it's a 1980-not 81.. That bike is SCARY fast when you really open her up!! I never told my mom, but I had an accident while practicing wheelies on it and it got away from me. Stupid me, I tried to put my feet down thinking I could run with it as it got out from under me, totally NOT taking into effect I was in 4th gear so yeah.. I was haulin just a LITTLE bit of ass that day!! 🤣🤣 The short of it is my feet IMMEDIATELY got thrown out from underneath me as I was being dragged due to my hand cranking back on the throttle (the bike was straight up in a wheelie with the gas tank in my face). We all know what happened from there..lol I FINALLY let the damn thing go and as I'm falling centepede style to the ground I'm watching my bike continue a BEAUTIFUL wheelie without me on it, my legs get thrown in front of my face like a scorpion-my helmet wasn't strapped so it went flyin.. I'm LITERALLY sliding on my throat, scared THE SHIT out of me!! Felt ALL of my upper & lower vertebrae crack and I thought that's it, I'm paralyzed-couldnt move my legs for a while. I proved my mom right (who hates bikes by the way). Mainly cause my brother fucked up his leg on his 79 YZ80 while racing my cousin on his 79 KX80. Ahhh, the GOOD old days!! I've had an 86 KX250 and a handful of crotch rockets since.. Share your war stories guys!! 😎

    My Lord, they've beefed up the travel in the suspension on the MX 80's in the last 40 years. Look at that short little thing!

    Easiest way to tell (aside from the seat graphics) is the swingarm. The 1980 had a tubular one (which should be Tahitian Red) , the 1981 had a steel rectangular one. The shocks on that stock are possibly the worst ever, but she is FAST

    My friend had an '85 CR80R back in the day. Boy, they sure came along way between '81 and '85, not that this bike should be underestimated.

    I'm pretty sure that's a 1980 not a 81 however could be at 81 being that you guys painted the tank and the original 81 had a white decal on it. I know that 1980 and 81 mate 18 horsepower which absolutely ribs for its time are you going today!

    • @rockypupoxo
      @rockypupoxo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 81 had a thicker aluminium swinging arm and different seat decal , i know, i owned one back in 81 lol

    • @glenpiro313
      @glenpiro313 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @rockypup, that swinger was steel on the 81, but painted to look aluminum, but looked and worked much better than the tubular. The shocks didnt hydraulic lock like the 1980 bikes did either. Great eye tho!

    • @rockypupoxo
      @rockypupoxo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@glenpiro313 yes you're right Glen , i thought it was chrome alloy , it looked a lot better than the tubular one , i loved my 81 CR 80 it was well quick , use to beat my mates RM80 on a straight , even give my mates yz100 a run for its money lol

    • @glenpiro313
      @glenpiro313 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @rockypup, yup Im thinking you and I are same age (1968) ish, so this bike brings back incredible memories! I still take mine out every now and again just to get that feeling I had as a kid (sheer terror) when the rpms get high enough. 18 hp sounds about right, I remember giving the RM100s and a few 125s a run for their money on mine!

      @rockypupoxo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@glenpiro313 yep im 68 to my friend ! I wish i still had mine, you're very lucky to still have yours , mine was stolen , i was only 13 when it happened i was gutted when it happened , loved that little red rocket !

      @ Mike Fernandez, my height and weight? Well Mike, Im 50 years old, around 5’6” on a good day, and 206 pounds. Fire hydrant esque.

    • @glenpiro313
      @glenpiro313 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mike Fernandez, depends on what you mean by “ride”. Occasionally I take it or my 1981 Yamaha YZ80H out of their cocoons, fire them up, and rip up and down my street on them, then I put them away. Its excellent stress relief, my neighbors are reminded that Im a jerk and ride loud things, and my bikes get some exercise. Mostly tho, its for me they make me feel better.

    • @glenpiro313
      @glenpiro313 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mike Fernandez, I like the CR80R mill the best, hands down; but as far as the total package the 1981 YZ80H is a no brainer.The suspension is good enough right now for a 170 pound adult to ride in the woods in my opinion. The motor is plenty fast too. Yamaha used to do their IROC thing back then with these bikes, I remember Eric Kehoe was the big winner back then.

    I had a 1982 model which was the first year for rear mono shock suspension and the last year for the air cooled engine. I raced other bikes in that class and did very well. However I remember being disappointed by Dirt Bike magazine for rating her top end performance more suited for novices and not as fast as the other bikes.
