      Thanks Deryk! Grab some old cars and give it a go! I'm finding doing the finer details with the powders a bit more tricky, but they look great and really finish the job.

    Thanks for posting, mate. For trucks, wheels, freight car bodies and locos to add rust I use REAL rust. I take a roll of fine steel wool and put it into a quart jar and fill it up with white vinegar and set it on a window sill so the sun can shine on it. After a month or two, I pour the liquid out into a stainless photo tray from my darkroom (10X14). After it is completely dry I use a single edged razor blade scraper and scrape the rust out of the tray. It usually comes out as a fine powder. I then store it in a snuff container. Depending on how long you leave the steel wool in the vinegar my batches come out with different colors of rust, i.e., some are orange and others are a deeper colored red. When I get ready to use it I put several scoops of my rust into a plastic communion cup (neat little cups for mixing paints) and add some alcohol, Elemer's white glue and a dab of water soluble glycerin. Then I just brush it on. If I want an area where the rust has eaten through the metal (plastic) I use my X-acto knife and make some gouges in the sides of a car and fill it up with my rust. To seal the rust I usually topcoat it with a flat acrylic clear coat. It looks very realistic 'cause it is REAL rust! Happy Railroading! :-)

    Hi Gregg! excellent tutorial. Like always you a bound with ideas and fun facts, you make it easy to watch. The seems on the side of the cars I tape them on both sides or use a sticky card cut in the middle and stick it on the side of the seems ( leave a hair thin opening) just enough for the seem to show through and apply powder on it. Is tricky because you can really see the effect until you pull the tape or sticky note off. I also agree with BArailsystem about masking or removing the weels when you paint the trucks. Anyway, great tutorial full of info. Thanks a lot Gregg. Cheers my friend. RT

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks RT' I'm glad you had a laugh and enjoyed it. I tried your idea with the Panel line paint, but it bled under the tape, so I'll try it with powders. I tried applying powders to the seams with a Micro brush and it worked ok,just need a bit of a clean up. As far as the wheels go , I didn't get much paint on them at all??, but I will clean them up before they run on the layout. Thanks for the tip and watching. Take care sir,
      Cheers Gregg

    Another top video Gregg! The shower scene was hilarious!! I've never cleaned rollingstock that way before. I wonder if my engines would like a tub that way!! LOL I know what you mean about fragile details. I made up the wire holders with some 16mm wood dowel with a stand to, well, stand them in...... four at a time! You can have one if you like! I'll show one in my next video, today with any luck!
    Talk to you soon mate!

    Very nicely weathered cars, Gregg! One thing I would suggest: before weathering the trucks (actually before weathering the car at all) remove those nice metal wheels and install some cheap plastic wheels from a train show or a modeling buddy. That will protect the pointed areas on the inside of the trucks and allow the trucks to get nicely painted, but it will protect the metal wheels form getting paint where paint shouldn't be. It can be rather troublesome getting dried paint off of the wheel treads. Don't ask how I know this.

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks FLyboy! I take the trucks off and leave the wheel sets in , as I use three different colours on them , first thing I do is use a paint pen with rusty rail colour and do the wheel faces, still in the truck. Then the truck gets 3 different colours with light coats in random spots and this covers some of the wheels and I don't get any paint into the bearing cone. Once the truck is done , the excess paint on the treads is easily removed with a cotton tip dipped in Isopropyl alcohol. The paint pen is great as it only puts the paint where you wan't it and is much tidier than a brush. Maybe I should do a video on the process?
      Cheers Gregg.

    Not bad Greg, just keep going, and you will notice the more you do it the better u get and the more u learn. The main thing with the airbrush, of course learning how to use it, is mixing the right colors to get the desired effects, also using powders and oil's will really make it stand out.

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much! I see an improvement in the cars I've done already, and as you say , the colours are very important to get right! These cars will get powders applied , and they do really make a difference! Thanks for the tips .

    Gregg, the only shower scene worse than yours was in "psycho", Lord Stan would probably say "there are some things you can't UN-see!! I admire your courage, weathering with acrylics is pretty unforgiving as you can't wash it off if you make a mistake, I speak from experience. But keep going! To make a cake you have to break a few eggs! Fortunately minor oopsies can be massaged with the chalks, or you can tell people "I meant to do that". Anyway practice, practice and more practice. I found a couple of sites, Weathering by Tom Mann and The Weathering Shop that have some good information. Just search for them. Model Railroad Hobbyist E-zine has had articles about weathering too.

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL...classic and accurate statement Toady! I like the acrylics and if Im quick, I can remove the paint with the thinner mix, but not for long!! The chalks certainly do cover up minor mistakes for sure. Thanks for those sites, I'll check them out!
      Cheers Gregg

    Gregg, top notch video old boy! Well done, and I like your emphasis on starting with older cars and "playing" until you get the effect(s) you want. However I am still trying to get that shower scene out of my memory :-) By the way, for washes, instead of enamels I have had very good results with diluted India Ink. Some people dilute w/ alcohol, but I use Testors' Model Master Acryl Thinner. It seems to flow nicely into crevasses and grills. Any excess can be cleaned off with alcohol (carefully! 91% isopropyl alcohol removes many model paints if you use too much). In the USA the Hobby Lobby chain has multiple colors for only a few US% per bottle and it has a long shelf life. I use black and dark brown for most of my projects. Thanks for sharing your experiences, keep up the good work!

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much Gary! Don't worry if you forget the shower scene,it's always her for you ...LOL I've heard of the ink before,the Panel line is good for small internal lines, grills etc, but raised seams are a bit difficult. I'm trying powders on these and I'm getting better results and will show them when I get some good examples!
      Thanks for watching and the tips!
      Cheers Gregg

    Good job Gregg!! 👍👍
    Weathering scares too many people! I haven't seen (yet), your newer work... but nice start. I see you've referenced some great modelers of weathered equipment. If you ever need it, I can finally offer YOU some advice, if you still need some!! I've been weathering since 1986, using nearly every medium, except Pan Pastels. Can't afford it, but really want to work with it.
    Some people here have offered bits of advice - most even good!! 😜 You already have the best reference you can get. You work close to these all day long!! If you can, whip out the cell phone and snap some pics. Get under care, around the brake gear, between the wheels, and on bottom drop cars, around the chutes....
    Also, on roofwalks (probably only on Hoppers in your era), carefully sand the tops of the walkways, as they are worn by worker's boots. Most of the time the fill caps will be the cleanest, especially in food grade Hoppers. Sometimes, one or two fill caps will be new replacements, and shiny new. Many individual fill caps will have slightly different shades of color.
    If you model mostly the Western US, your "fade wash" should be closer to white, bone, or a very light being.
    As far as the streaking, brush streaks(especially rust), is much better done, using artist's oil paints, dotted, then streaked downward with a brush, dipped in pure Turpentine. To this day, still the best method. Have patience though, it can take up to 3-4 days to dry enough to work on the model further!
    Also, it's just not easy. Took me over a year to get really satisfactory results.
    BTW, *brilliant idea* rubbing a napkin on a freight car truck! I've actually not heard of that one, but will be trying it.
    I hope you've taken what I wrote as nothing but constructive!!

      Thanks Carmine,
      I always appreciate advice , so very welcome! I am always looking at videos that show the tops of cars and locos but unfortunately, we don't have the variety of cars down here and I don't work around much freight at all :-(.. I do a black wash now and then spray a very light bone to fade and then apply dirt and rust with the airbrush and powders.
      Hope ther young lady is ok....should put a viewer rating on this one..LOL
      Cheers Gregg

    Great start to a video..... Great video, never worry about doing to much, just makes it look a little older. The book you mention Done in a Day is a great book on weathering. I use a single action air brush and pastels, depending on how weathered want car to look. Also do my painting outside with mother nature, great natural light. Look forward to next video.

    Fantastic video Gregg. Thanks for sharing your findings with us. Have you ran the cars you weathered on your layout yet? I had an issue with the paint coming off the wheels onto the top of my rails and then transferring to locomotives and other cars, it was a mess and took me a while to clean it up. I bought a wheel mask after that to mask the wheels while I am painting to prevent paint from getting on the conductive parts.

      BArailsystem That was a clever piece of kit but reamember that you can drill a hole in some sort of plate and hold the Wheels by hand on the left as you hold the airbrush in Your right hand. A bit more work but cheaper With same result.

    Gregg, you mentioned about a book you had years ago called "Track Planning for Realistic Operations". I've had that for years and if its the one I'm thinking of its by a gent by the name of John Armstrong. I had ASSumed it was long out of print but I see you can still buy it (3rd Ed.) on Amazon. He also wrote a book called "The Railroad - What It, What It Does", another excellent resource on the prototype. There is also a fairly recent book on layout operations by Tony Koester (2nd Ed.) which you can get from Kalmbach's site and probably Amazon, too. Cheers - Paul

    I don't think you'er considering what types of materials those hoppers are hollowing. That would have some bearing on
    how it looks on the top and sides. And yes I do thank some weathering powders would help.

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hoppers haul a wide variety of materials, so a number of "spills" could occur on any car. All these cars will be getting further weathering with powders.

    You're trying techniques and IMHO that is what makes the hobby (any hobby for that matter) fun, exciting, learning experience. Following what happens in the 1:1 is always (again IMHO) a very good thing, but 'deviating' from the 'norm' is sometimes a humbling experience; sometimes what appears to be a mistake is actually one of those "aha moments." Mother Nature is not consistent.

      Very true Colin! Just comparing the first and last car I've done is a big difference and I think I prefer the "less" weathered look for most of my cars. I have to get better as I've run out of old Athearn hoppers...LOL
      Thanks for watching.

    Great video and a Nice result. I think Your old hopper looks great to:) If you`re worried about only 18% Girls watching Your vids, I think you did a great effort in getting more Girls to watch Your channel. I only have a small tip and that is in weathering one can get away With most looks because some New hoppers might be more dirty than other similar New hoppers. This because some may be used near wery dirty industry and some will not. So there is your get out of jail freecard if you weather one hopper to Heavy at some point:) I started With an airbrush With the same basic design as Yours and it was not any good so I would appreciate if you can share With us what brand and model you use in Your Next video, since Yours is working, hint hint:) Thanks for a great demonstration and for sharing:)
    Regards
    JC

      Thanks very much JC !. As you see by my latest weathering effort, I found a wash that works. I prefer cleaner cars and as you say they are all different but most of mine will be on the cleaner side.I also think the new cars are better due to their better paint jobs. My Air brush is a Pasche VL dual action, not too bad and always use a paint extender (a few drops of glycerine in your thinner mixture) to stop the paint drying on the tip. Glad you liked the clip!
