The combo of the "swing the bat" scene and this song is possibly the greatest animated sequence that has ever been made across anything. That was the exact moment in FLCL where I realized I was watching something legendary.
It is incredible that they could make such an epic scene with almost no character backstories, no transformations, no revenge or no anger; but you really felt it when Naota swang the bat.
Ah, yes. The scene where the theme of FLCL came into full view: people using romance as a means to an end. Despite being so different, Mamimi and Haruko were very similar; narrative parallels, in some sense. They both wanted Naota, but they didn't _want_ Naota. They wanted something associated with him. In Mamimi's case, he reminded her of Naota's older brother, and in Haruko's, he had a space pirate bird inside him. A tale about how true love is about loving someone for who _they_ are, demonstrated by showing both regular and the logical extreme of cases where that _doesn't_ happen.
Well, that could be one of the themes. I took it as the literal disintegration of inhibition, regardless of societal, moral, religious bounds that so sturdily leash a child. A farewell before they are cast into pubescent chaos, then monotonous adulthood.
Sometimes you just gotta swing the bat. If you don't even try, you'll never know if you even had a chance of doing something amazing. So what if you strike out? You had the balls to swing. Sometimes that's just enough. But those times... When you finally hit that world shattering home run, you'll be happy you swung in the first place.
I know what Haruko is saying but how does she know all of this if she's an alien herself? Aliens aren't the same as humans. We even don't know if aliens make mistakes at all let alone even exist.
Ok but can we talk about how good this song is, like instrumentally and sonically? The warm, slight clipping in the production, the amazing sounding vintage-style drums mixed in with the guitars, plus the wonderful melody and guitar solo? this is a masterfully crafted rock song by itself and the mixing and mastering sound so alive!

After not seeing or hearing about flcl it came up one day in a youtube recommendation. After listening to the songs again, i realized my wife is mamimi and my personality became haruko. Im to excited and energetic and a dumb/smart a** lol. This song just reminds me of, being on open water in a small boat on a clear Summer morning. As you breathe the lake's crisp air while watching the rising sun's warm reflection off the fluxuating waters, you see small groups of seagulls squawking at each other as they fly by. It's a cozy paradise. So much simpler than the struggles of modern living. At that moment, you notice off in the distance a bridge closing the gap of the lake between one side of the town, to the other as people are driving by on their morning commutes. You sigh in dissapointment as you realize this moment won't last forever. You will have to return to that lifestyle soon. I introduced my Ex-Boyfriend to this song and he loved it so much, we'd listen to it in his car when we drove wherever and we'd try to sing along as best we could. I introduced my Ex-Boyfriend to this song and he loved it so much, we'd listen to it in his car when we drove wherever and we'd try to sing along as best we could. When he broke up with me (via text no less) I was so hurt that I couldn't stand to see or hear anything we used to enjoy together.
