Brutal, but kind. Don't know how you do it, but your customers seem to love it. Keep teachin' em what they need to know. Not too many of the old schoolers left.
I just built a 69 XLCH hard tail Ironhead Bobber. I've never been a Sportster fan but I definitely have been enjoying building this one. Still has a magneto and I just went through the engine and transmission. The solid roller lifters sure make for a bunch of top end noise.
Just completed watching all 200 video's for the '61 Ironhead...thanks for taking the time to post these, very informative, actually get to watch mistakes being made, and corrected.
Might want to add a caption or description like "learn to kick start" or "ride an Ironhead" or something, i watch some of your engine rebuild vids, they're great, and i know this kid is one of your apprentice, in those engine builds. I do like the way you show them how and why, to troubleshoot problems and things. Salute, its rare to find such people like you in my place, most would just keep it to themselves, not into share anything, i learn a lot from your vids to try on my shovelhead! you should to make an online lessons in understanding harley engines! Thanks Keenan!
sounds like you are volunteering to be the video editor. i just happen to have that position open. wherres to the fun in making it easy. you only learn if you work for it and live it. tatro
+Tatro Machine haha that really gets me. Should i send out my application and resume too? Dope. Hope i could visit your workshop one day, Tatro. And looking forward for more of your awesome videos. You really should make a full rebuild and maintenance video, and sell it, i'd love to absorb and learn that knowledge of yours. Cheers. Truly. Faridz
Greetings Tatro, you sound just like my late brother James. He loved to break my balls when I would visit him in Florida and He would have me start his "51" Panhead, I weigh a buck fifty and it was a lot of fun to get it going in a few kicks like a boss. It is my experience that all Harley Davidson ,(kick start) have to be massaged a little different. Just another reason to love them.
Never could start mine standing next to it like that. I always had to get on and straddle it, for a better kick. Some had a grip for the spark advance, but mine didn't. I had to either set my mag for easy start , but less power, or for the most power, spark was advanced , but hard to start. These guys made me want to jump into the video and start the thing for them. lol
now how would he learn then? all true on the mag, that is why I use a distributor with electronic ignition. it starts easy and makes lots of power. tatro
I had a '65 Sporty back in the day. I never retarded the magneto to start. It was hard to start at times. It was the same deal with my brother's '66 sporty. From what we remember , the magnetos were bolted solid. Were we doing something wrong? Great vid, thanks.
Cool videos you blokes do,been watching a few you have done, learnt some good stuff, you sound like Billy Bob Thornton too by the way, from Sydney Australia
This is why a nice tall sissy bar is nice, so you can hold the bike and kick while standing upright. I love my 900, shes a one kicker now that it's dialed in and Ive got the sequence down.
I had one of these old XLCH's try to break my leg one day.............The following Monday it went into the shop for a rebuild of the electric starter system........!!!
hi, i was not looking for a job. just stating there was another way of fixing the problem with the kicker. i show how to do the job in more then one video playlist. tatro
Tatro Machine Thank You Sir, I don't doubt your expertise but I prefer to use the electric systems now days. You know that right leg still bothers me even now decades later......
Hey Tatro? I was watching video #144 , you were working on a 72 sportster refilling the primary oil and you put a hair over 1qt. In the primary, this confuses me cuz I read my service manual and it recommends 1.5 pints, so I guess my question is this...in your experience is it better too slightly over fill the primary?? Or should one just stick too what the factory manual says. 1.5 pints?
4 speed xl's have level plugs that give you the correct amount of oil and they hold more then 1-1/2 pints of oil. they hold just under a quart. a few extra oz's of oil just helps keep the gears lubed better. at high rpm's like I run in my race bikes you need all the lube you can get because the mainshaft gears can run dry and burn up. evo's have basically the same design so same goes for them. on 5sp bikes I fill them until the oil gets to the bottom of the clutch plates. tatro
I know this is an older vid but come on guys I know none of you just popped out of your momma and was an instant biker why is he a poser he is a young man just learning the tricks heck not all of us got to grow up around bikes my parents hated bikes wouldn't let me have any type of bike mini or 3wheeler or nothing had hot rods but no bikes got out on my own brother in law gave me a ride on his bike and that was it got rid of my 69 Camaro and bought a 77 ironhead rode it for a month then traded for a 84 fxr that was 30 years ago now when I am able to ride which aint a lot thanks to a doc that said it was a new miracle back surgery I ride a 99 wide glide that I have worked on for last 6 years wish I could ride a rigid but they would have to help me off it after just a few miles so give this young man a break every body has to learn and I think its an awesome scoot also thank you from my family for serving for all of you who serve this great nation so GOD bless and keep her in the wind
+GunNut BikeNut its called tough love. beat it into his head because being nice was not working. overall he was a big improvement from were he started. at least in the video the bike was starting some of the time. after the rebuild it was alot harder to kick did it was all worn out but he was kicking it better. it takes time to learn but he was starting getting it. after building the bike here in the shop he decided to go to mmi Harley school. after taking some of classes he said he was getting a better idea of what i was doing here at the shop. it kinda was all starting to come together in his head. should be getting out soon. by the way, rigid frame Harley's are very nice riding when you keep the stock seat post and seat when adjusted correctly. its when you take it off and put on custom seats that they really get hard on your back. sounds like have had fun over the years on your bikes and that is what it is all about. tatro
glad to see him getting into it you have a very awesome shop its cool to see you help these guys learn how to work on their own stuff somthin you don't see anymore take care be safe out there
Ian Gunning you can build an old bike from scratch or buy a new bike, they cost about the same.I can't think of any reason to buy a new bike. all my bikes are built to do what I want and no one else has one like it.tatro
Lots of hate on this vid. christ, the guys learning... wish I had someone to teach me, I'm cursed with learning through fucking shit up the first time around.
I remember I used to get the cylinder soaking wet like pre-prime it with the kill switch on and once I got everything soaking wet with gas then I take it off and I feel for the where the where the kick was and then f****** go for it but always left foot
This video just confirms why I would never own a kick start iron head ever. This bike would make sure you are always late to the party. Kick start bikes from the 30s start easier than this. The bike is beautiful though, and the series of videos are super informative. Thanks for posting.
There seems to be a mystification of iron heads and their difficulty to kick start. There are also youtubers (and some old school bikers I know personally) who smugly shake their head at people who can't kick start an older harley. I have yet to see anyone actually reveal the 'secret knowledge' of how to easily accomplish the feat. I can sort of get an idea from your coaching in the video.
I have a great Harley mechanic (Tod) in T and R Motorcycles Lowestoft England who can fit one on my model if I want, but he does have a biig smile on his face every time I mention it, ill see what he says about your comment and how he plans to do it, thanx for the info, Peace
that is why you buy different years bikes instead just because if was cheap. you have to know your parts supply when it comes time to buy or make what you want. tatro
Kickstarting sometimes takes a real touch. My first bike wan't a Harley but it was kickstart only. There was definitely a right way and a wrong way to do it. This one might be a little harder because the kicker is a rookie and the carb/iggy aren't adjusted really sharp. And finding neutral? That can be hard when it doesn't want to go into neutral.
I watched it ALL. I started watching all the videos on the sportster 1961 model at 2am and its now 1105am. Plus yesterday and the day before I watched al the videos on the 88CI evo rebuild and then the 2014 CVO. I am a professional mechanic and engineer and do not work on anything as far as a trade, but am my own enthusiast and do all my own work on cars and trucks I own and three Harleys..77 sportster 100...80 superglide 1200 shovel and my latest since last june a 2002 softail 88CI. That latest softail is one heavy motorcycle. Here is a belief I have on the cvo chains and tensioners on the cams...Why cant a cam chain be used that is simply the right measured size? No tensioner should be necessary if the chain is measured the correct length. This is easy for me to know because I am an engineer. I'm surprises SS hasn't taken care of this as a modification.. I am retired and age 60 and this is how I had time to watch all these hours of videos. One thing I do know is this. That 61 sportster engine will last at least 50k miles if that guy takes care of it with proper oil and this is a great compliment to you based on my belief those only lasted maybe 30k from the factory at HD
you must be retired and very bored. i watch then too, i think they are funny. must be something wrong with me. harley can't make a tensioner, how are they going to make a chain that doesn't wear out in 20k miles. don't forget about the floppy crank. you need to find the race bike motor videos. tatro
I still like watching these last couple of vids for entertainment. Has this bike ever come back to the shop for service etc.? I'm sure this young whipper snapper knows how to kick his bike to life now?
I used to hate to shift to being on the right in the break on the left the f****** threw me way off never really got over it it was f****** weird grew up on dirt bikes with the opposite break on the right
I had a 68 with a tillerson carburetor I had to put a paper clip on the bottom it was one little hole to make it get gas when I started it I f****** broke the kickstarter trying to start that b**** but once it ran it was pissa
This Bike starts pretty easily as He is only kicking it 1/2 Speed.Could You show us what You did to the to the Starter Clutch Gear teeth? In Depth. You showed the teeth but not exactly how You cut them down.
ckelley63 some people know what they want and don't mind working for it. if you want a computer wrapped in plastic then that is good for you. if someone else wants real metal and to be one with his bike and not a computer then so be it. its not your call it is his. everyone needs to learn how to make and old bike or car work and he is learning what it wants and how to deal with it. by the way, when the big bomb goes off and fries all what the modern world has to offer, this bike will still be running with that crappy old mag. tatro
+Tatro Machine it think he just means because this guy had no clue how to start it and you had to walk him through it I guarantee if you tried to start it this would have taken max five kicks
That was just a little sarcasim Tatro point well taken though I to had to learn when I bought my 73 XLCH about 21 years ago still have it to this day. Great vid I just wished you lived in my neck of the woods, really hard trying to find someone who knows what the hell their doing when it comes to an Ironhead motor bike sounds great!
Someone please demonstrate to this dude how to kick a bike over. He looks like he's doing some kind of River Dance move . It's hilarious yet a bit frustrating to watch
Jeeeeee-sus! I'll keep my two-stroke Kawi triple. Cold start is two kicks. When it's hot I can start it with my hand. This Hog has personality though. It's like a killer whale; it's really cool but I wouldn't want to own one.
Kick starting an ironhead stroker??? Same routine... Flood it... Kick it.....choke it.... break you leg....scream at it... then walk away and say f_ _ k it!!!! Lol
@@TatroMachine Yeh....exactly!!! What's up Tatro....its Johnny up here in Woodstock NY......the Sub Artic!!!! Kickstarting this Stroker sucks...but hey, it will be a lesson in patience and strength....if I don't end up in the hospital with my leg in two!!!!!
that would be a big time wrong. kicking with a bent knee is how you get the levage and power saftly that you need to kick the motor over when you don't weigh 200# plus. kicking with a straight knee is a sure way to hyper extend your knee or get tossed over the handlebars. tatro
You are not supposed to move that mag by hand it has twist grip advance on left handlebar grip from factory these bozos must have disconnected it?it is a spark advance magneto these hand jobbers don't know what they are doing and coach is grabbing at straws with his directions cause the bike is not in tune!
you sound like a real expert. get down here and show us how to do it. did you notice that it starts ok when i do the kicking and he is lost most of the time. the best thing you can do with a mag is toss it and put a good battery ignition on it. i proved that many years ago on my race bikes. they both started right up most of the time and went 5mph faster. mags are for show, not go. tatro
Brutal, but kind. Don't know how you do it, but your customers seem to love it. Keep teachin' em what they need to know. Not too many of the old schoolers left.
bike riders are not pussys and don't like being treated like one.

I come back and watch this from time to time. That's a sweet looking bike.
Old bikes you gotta think like the bike,
New bikes you just ride.
That’s why old Harleys are so cool!!!
Great video

"Ok now start it again!!!" Your a legend Tatro 😎
Glad to see the younger generation willing to learn the kick.
jimmykimmi01 he had no choice, it is a real Harley.besides, the bike has no electric starter or a hill near by.tatro
hahaha kick or walk.....
Great stuff, watch all your vids. I had a '71 XLCH with a tillotson carb. Sweet ride. Keep on keepin' on, thanks.
very nice complete series on rebuilding this motor...
That front wheel is nice...nice bike. Mr Tatro is a patient guy for sure.
awesome vid, awesome bike! my first was a 68XLCH, my knee still hurts from 2.05 mins in.
Tony Cobuccio he will learn, now he knows what sportster knee kinda feels like.tatro

Haha, kicking an ironhead is an art. Each bike is different, all in the timing and carb. So fun to see someone else learning.
Sweet ol ironhead!...great bike ✌
Great video, beautiful lowrider.
Greetings Tatro, you sound just like my late brother James. I had 2, 72 Sportys, and a 73....I had to learn this stuff myself....starting AND wrenching...had them all down to bare cases....
What is the name of the exhaust pipes? These look real slick on the bike.

It’s good you’re teaching these young guys who know absolutely nothing about bikes.
Never could start mine standing next to it like that. I always had to get on and straddle it, for a better kick. Some had a grip for the spark advance, but mine didn't. thanks man for the advice I'm sure I'll be asking some more questions in the futire
It's his first bike n nervous. All good he'll get there. I have a 61' flathead kicks temperamental. Like a baby imprinted on me!
I had a '65 Sporty back in the day. I never retarded the magneto to start. It was hard to start at times. It was the same deal with my brother's '66 sporty. From what we remember , the magnetos were bolted solid. Were we doing something wrong? Great vid, thanks.
only about 10% of bikes like to be started with fixed timing. all the others like to retarded some. it vares by motor and temp.

doesn't matter if you do it correctly.

I need to know where those pipes came from. They are awesome... Please tell me.
KING LEE paugcho upswept.tatro
Where did you buy the exhaust pipes? And what is the style name of them. Thank you

poor guy, kicks like a girl
thank you best comment of the day
he was kicking harder with his left foot than his right. haha
I laughed when you said is the oil tank warming up, he feels the gas tank.
This is why a nice tall sissy bar is nice, so you can hold the bike and kick while standing upright. I love my 900, shes a one kicker now that it's dialed in and Ive got the sequence down.
damn starts up nice when you get it
hell i've been on evo sportster with electric start that didn't idle as well
I had one of these old XLCH's try to break my leg one day.............The following Monday it went into the shop for a rebuild of the electric starter system........!!!
or, you could just have fixed the kick starter like i do.

i folded my leg twice... still say electric start are for pussies... unless you have to shit then its a toss up
is that little radiator a oil cooler?
+Mike Toro
yes it is an oil cooler. ironheads need all the cooling they can get.

Hey Tatro? I was watching video #144 , you were working on a 72 sportster refilling the primary oil and you put a hair over 1qt. I remember kickstarting my first bike... It only took me three kicks haha
***** yea, but you can only count to three.tatro
The grips look like they came off of a Norton. Did they?
luv harley n had one ironhead 77 xlh
My '99 XL1200S would never find neutral without playing with it for awhile. But, it was a brute.
How much did this whole job cost?
Ian Gunning you can build an old bike from scratch or buy a new bike, they cost about the same.I can't think of any reason to buy a new bike. all my bikes are built to do what I want and no one else has one like it.tatro
Cool bike !
so I should install one on my bike I got a 77 ironhead head xlh and it don't have one

if you care about your oil pressure you need a light so that you know you have some. if not, you don't heed one.

all it takes is practice with some guidance. until you do it you don't know what it takes.

by the way, when the big bomb goes off and fries all what the modern world has to offer, this bike will still be running with that crappy old mag.

Kick school, like Karate Kid ;)
Jeeeeee-sus! I'll keep my two-stroke Kawi triple. Cold start is two kicks. When it's hot I can start it with my hand. This Hog has personality though. It's like a killer whale; it's really cool but I wouldn't want to own one.
Has the oil warmed up?...
That's the gas tank.
Oh.
... the engine, not the exhaust pipe
Uh,
xl c h stands for charlie horse
you better put an electric stsrter in it
kick it!!!!
i would have two words for the guy behind the camera......second word "off"
Kick starting an ironhead stroker??? Same routine...
Flood it... Kick it.....choke it....
break you leg....scream at it...
then walk away and say f_ _ k it!!!! Lol
and than it starts on the first kick when you come back.
tatro
@@TatroMachine Yeh....exactly!!! What's up Tatro....its Johnny up here in Woodstock NY......the Sub Artic!!!! Kickstarting this Stroker sucks...but hey, it will be a lesson in patience and strength....if I don't end up in the hospital with my leg in two!!!!!
mine did fuck my knee, slipped of the quadrant, reliable od fucker though, i had no trouble finding nuetral, cheers
that is why i grind the kicker gears the way i do. my knees hurt too.
tatro
If I kick like him in my bike my father will kill me 🤣🤣
That kid's gonna get tired of that XLCH. When it won't start with his buddies around, he's gonna get p*ssed.
This looks like fun. Not as fun as actually riding a decent motorcycle, but still fun.....I guess.
Powder puff
Save your embarrassment, and buy an engine with an electric start.
real harleys don't have buttons, only pedals.
tatro
@@TatroMachine I don't know where you get that idea from!
A Harley is a HARLEY.
same place you did. out of my ass.
tatro
Kicking with a bent knee, he’s going to need some physical therapy or a new knee someday.
that would be a big time wrong. kicking with a bent knee is how you get the levage and power saftly that you need to kick the motor over when you don't weigh 200# plus. kicking with a straight knee is a sure way to hyper extend your knee or get tossed over the handlebars.
tatro
That was painful to watch.
Way too much kicking on a bike don't think I would like it it's my opinion
That guy! has no,business,having a bike.sorry!!
You are not supposed to move that mag by hand it has twist grip advance on left handlebar grip from factory these bozos must have disconnected it?it is a spark advance magneto these hand jobbers don't know what they are doing and coach is grabbing at straws with his directions cause the bike is not in tune!
you sound like a real expert. get down here and show us how to do it. did you notice that it starts ok when i do the kicking and he is lost most of the time. the best thing you can do with a mag is toss it and put a good battery ignition on it. i proved that many years ago on my race bikes. they both started right up most of the time and went 5mph faster. mags are for show, not go.
tatro
This guy is embarrassing. I seen girls kick harder
