That’s really strange! With the video function on the iPhone, you can apparently “photograph” the moon better than with the photo function on the iPhone 16 Pro. It seems that the video mode handles light and details better, probably because multiple frames are combined and optimized during filming. Meanwhile, the HDR processing in the photo mode seems to struggle more with extreme contrasts, such as the moon against a dark sky. Maybe this will be improved with a software update, but it’s interesting to discover that the video mode actually has an advantage here.
I wonder if it would have turned out if you hit the photo capture button while taking the video. Me thinks it would capture a higher resolution image than the screen capture.
Ridiculous. Simply shoot in RAW (you clearly have it disabled), lower ISO to 100, then lower the exposure by raising your shutter speed until you can see all the detail on the surface of the moon. And while you are doing all that, manually focus on the moon (although autofocus will be good enough, but only after you manually lower the exposure. This is very basic photography and these instructions apply to ANY camera. It's not rocket science. Nothing in this video is good advice; in fact, the whole thing is completely ridiculous, as are all the comments from Apple people. The only reason this video "trick" works is because taking videos automatically raises your shutter speed. You can simply raise the shutter speed of your "stills" camera (i.e., "photo mode," not "video mode"), which is the only way for any camera to be able to properly photograph the moon. (Most cameras can also allow you to close, or stop-down, your aperture, but Apple products are fixed-aperture.)

🤦 You simply set your ISO to 100 and your shutter speed to around 1/2000 and the moon will be perfectly exposed. Taking a screenshot of a video is this guy's best method?!? That's insane! All you basically have to do is raise your shutter speed. It is literally that simple. JFC. And yes, he should be shooting in RAW, which you can clearly see on his screen that he disabled RAW recording. That just further demonstrates that he is not someone who has any clue about photography. But he's out here making videos to teach ignorance. Instead of simply raising the shutter speed, he takes a video of the moon so he can take a screenshot. 🤣
As always, Shayne, great advice. It's surprising that people think the Moon requires a nighttime exposure, when in reality, it is a full-Sun, daylight object. :-Don
You mentioned the Neewer 7x lens but I haven’t seen a review of it, yet. Would you suggest buying it and will there be a review at any time? Thank you ❤
You can do just the same taking a photo. Just have to play with the locking autofocus (yes, you have to -2.0 the exposition and then do just the same with the sliding down, once you Lock the focus). I did some pretty good pics with an iPhone 15 pro max that, modified just a little with Lightroom or Photo, became very very good to be a phone shoot.
Not brilliant. Completely dumb. Taking a video only works somewhat because videos are taken with a higher shutter speed automatically. Literally all you have to do is manually set your ISO to 100, then raise your shutter speed until you can see all the detail on the moon the same as you can with your eyes. You should also use manual focus, and it may be difficult to focus whether manual or automatic until you first lower the exposure by raising the shutter speed, and again you must keep your eyes open at 100. It is extremely simple, this ridiculous "screenshot a video" method is just ludacris.
You should also shoot in raw, unlike the guy in the video who clearly has a slash mark through his RAW icon on his phone screen. Your life would be far easier and make much more sense if you stopped using Apple products. Apple products make people dumb. When people use Apple products I rightfully assume they don't understand anything at all about technology. This video is proof of this. Completely ridiculous, but it does epitomize Apple people.
This reply shows you dont use an iphone. I guess youre only here to troll iPhone users. Thanks for triggering the algorithm. Even better that you commented twice. I appreciate it.
Legend! Thank you!! I recently noticed that in dark ligjting, the iphone sometimes refuses to switch to the telephoto lens, with apparently no way to force it to do so. Have you heard of this & do you know any tips or tricks? Happy new year!! 🎉
@ yes, sometimes I’ve taken 4 or 5 pictures of the night sky with my iPhone, including the Andromeda Galaxy, and I’ve wondered how it would look if I could stack them together. If you know of any free software that can help, that would be great. Thanks!
I have an iPhone 16 Pro Max and when I switch to video, I cannot access my exposure control or the drop down panel at all. The only thing at the top of the screen is the flash button, an action button, a 5G button, and the elapsed timer but no exposure control. Any ideas?
How does this work then? I mean, the optics are optics. As someone else has said, in theory snapping in ProRAW should achieve the exact same resolution and outcome? What am I missing?
Your S23U takes photos of the moon with AI details that are not there. But thanks for coming to comment on a video that was clearly for an iPhone user.
Ich würde das Iphon weglegen und mit nem Samsung ab S22 - S24 den Mond fotografieren. Trust me Bro. Selbst das Huawei P30 pro macht besser Bilder vom Mond.
Every time I film a video specifically a "How to" video for an iPhone, I know there will be people here telling me the Samsungs do it better. Im not sure why you would tell me that. Its a how to video. No a this is better than that type of video. You literally came here to troll iPhone users and tell them to use the phones that add fake detail to the moon. Nice, and thanks for helping the algorithm get this in front of more people.
That's because when you take a photo with the S24 I'll try accusing all the AI and software tricks to zoom and add detail that's actually not even there it's fake it's a fake photo yes you can do it but it's still a fake photo it's all AI and software and adding details that aren't actually on the moon the moon photos on Samsung phones are fake because it's all AI and software it's not real that's why there's details where there's no details on the moon I've been able to take a better photo of the moon of what it actually looks like on my iPhone 14 pro max and all you have to do is the same thing you had to do with the iPhone 4S before the ultra phones were released by Samsung is just tap the focus bring the exposure all the way down from that square from tapping to focus and then taking the exposure all the way down from the little icon on Bottom of where the camera icon is to take the photo it's just above that and you tap that little eye icon and then take this photo all the way down to 0 and bam easy a good picture of the moon it's funny because even an iPhone 4 ask it take a better picture of the moon than a Galaxy S8Even zoom in all the way in without using any of the pro Mode bullshit modes
I also have the s24 ultra. (It's an amazing phone), if you use Expert RAW, you can take really detailed photos of the moon without the AI enhancing the image.
@@ShayneMostyn "fake moon"? You clearly have no idea what you are talking about, or that you can turn off the camera support to get REAL photos, which I do ;) but what can you know if you live in "apple bubble", get out of it and try some fresh air :)
That's a neat trick i never thought of, to lower the exposure then zoom in. Thank you!!
You are very welcome!
It's easier to take a picture of the moon when it's not so dark outside. I took a decent picture this morning without a tripod.
100% but its not always dark...
Brilliant!! You can also capture images while shooting a video, pressing the white button on the right of the record button.
Yes! I will be giving that a go too. Finally a reason for that feature!

Did the iOS 18.2 update work for fixing night mode for taking astrophotography? Or do you still have the blue lines in the pictures ?
Its not 100% but now manageable in the edit.
It still turns black sky to blue
Have you tried shooting raw and then decreasing the highlights?
Yes, I have done video with that before. I think this is the better way these days.

Woohoo 🙌 thx u foot a nice pic of the moon finally!
Definitely looking forward to trying this. Thanks!

What are you using for a MagSafe connection for the iPhone?
Its a Ulanzi one. Seems they dont make them anymore.
absolutely brilliant, no pun intended
I miss Huawei, it used to focus and enhanced it for the user automatically.
The old Huawei used to turn ping pong balls into the moon too.
This is so cool!!

You can always take a shot while recording. ;)
Great video - made me wonder: Could this be how the Samsung Galaxy S series takes such good moon photos? It's AI does all these steps automatically?
